View Full Version : Davis Cup 2017 - GB def Canada 3-2, into the Quarter-Final
Obviously would've better match up with Andy and Milos there had they been fit/energised, however don't think it was the best time of the year for that. However the Davis Cup schedules are always challenging, see that Djokovic is the only one of the top 14 playing this weekend.
Probably only because he exited AO early!
Probably only because he exited AO early!
I think he would have played anyway unless injured. He talked about looking for inspiration and joy and he's always attributed a lot of his success in 2011 to the Davis cup win in 2010. He is often visiting Serbia this time of year from all the snowy pics he puts up. It's not fat to travel from Monaco either. I'm hoping they win :) IF we win the rounds before it could increase the chance of a home tie. I do think though that this is the lowest participation by people in the top 15 in a long time. So close to the AO isn't as good as the March 1st round

Bit surprised Shapopalov opens up ahead of Polansky, a bit risky from Canada as it is a debut for Denis methinks but it could aid Dan ;)? If, as we expect, Dan wins then pressure is off Kyle and would be on Vasek who I believe is outside top100 so he must be on a bad run of form.
We were talking about this yesterday, Roy thought they have picked a leftie to play Dan as they think he has a weakness there.

No I didn't think Dan had a weakness, just thought it was an option they had to try something different against him. It also means Pospisal plays Kyle which I think they believe is their best chance of a singles victory, which if they win one opening singles and the doubles could apply pressure on the last day with a 2-1 lead.....but that's a big IF to me

can't argue with this. The event does get devalued when the stars don't play, especially when they are fit. But you can fully understand it. A change of continent/surface/ doesn't necessarily fit in with a players' schedule. But I can't see how it will be resolved, unless it goes bi-annual, like The Ryder Cup.
All the best team GB! :GBflag: I will be watching Dan's match on BBC2 at 2000hrs :)

It will have highs and lows like everything with some of the top players unable to/choosing not to play sometimes
will open the doors for lesser teams/players to advance. Although the timing could'ave been better for this one, and others.
This one has to be the worst for sometime as only nole is playing out of the top players.
Maybe that will wake them up? Not holding my breath though.
I might be tonight when Dan and Kedders are playing. I wonder if Andy has lent them all his horse?

I noticed that too. It was a great tie ... they have all been great ties. Even the ones we have lost, I have always had a blast. In my early DC years, nearly every tie I went to we lost! Has been much better the last few years of course but really the most fun has been since I joined AMFF.
Apparently the court in Ottawa is super slick to suit Pospisil's game and not Kyle's.

This is certainly not easy, those serves are vicious on this super fast court
I don't agree with much John Lloyd says but I think his idea of playing Davis Cup every two years - like the Ryder Cup - is a good idea.
Some big serves from the young Canadian - and only 17. Think what he'll be like with more muscle! Definitely a name for the future.
Lloydy and his theories about the DC format and lack of top players. It could be argued that this tie will be more competitive without Andy playing.

Of course, that's true, but I do think that the whole thing is devalued if the top players don't take part. Playing it every two years might just ease the pressure and they also must surely look at the timing of the ties.
This rather 'scrappy' hitting style of young Denis must be difficult for Dan to read. There's very little rhythm. Strange to watch.

Obviously a problem with the timing of ties (particularly in early Feb) and need to attract more top players, however whilst not idea if matches were reduced to best of 3 should at least partly solve that issue. I for one would be disappointed if it was biannual, would give fans less chance to cheer their favourites.
Anyway after facing bit of pressure Dan has stepped up and would seem firmly in ascendancy, 5-2!
I think Dan is getting the measure of this match now. Some great accurate shots from our No 1!

He's playing a player who is ranked nearly 100 points lower than he is, who's also carrying an injury - he's expected to win and feeling the pressure. Added to that, his mentor - Andy - isn't there to give him moral support. If he can manage to steal this set it could be a whole different story.

Only 7 winners from Pospisil, shows how little he had to do other than serve big and keep the ball in court. No doubt Kyle lost the plot after losing the first set.

agree totally, Kyle had opportunities in the first set on second serves but made crucial errors and then played an awful service game to loose the first set. Then it all went downhill and his play was similar to a couple of awful performances in Sydney to a qualifier ranked about 150 and his pitiful performance losing to careno busta in Melbourne. Had hoped a bit of tlc from Leon would help bit it didn't today, nor the tremendous support he receivedright up to the finish

We have been chatting what we think of our chances now. Myself I thought this was Canada's best chance to win a singles with Kyle not as good as Dan on a fast hardcourt but I felt their best chance of a rubber win was the doubles. I certainly expect Dan to do better against popsicle and rate our chances of 50/50 if we loose the doubles or 90/10 if we win them. Others feel we really need to win the doubles because the singles could well finish all square again on sunday and so they make Canada favourites if they win the doubles. A few more drinks and we might become more confident but this match is really in the balance.
Not impressed with Kyle at all I am afraid. The telling thing is, not that I expected better, but that he ran completely true to form in that performance. . I don't think he will go much further up the rankings. Or am I being harsh?

Not a great performance by Kyle but on the bright side live play is guaranteed for Sunday which is good for the British fans who have had a long journey, and the beauty of the format allows Kyle to get a good talking to from Leon and then redeem himself. The vast majority of players have their ups and downs - no doubt Evo is playing brilliantly at the moment, but Kyle was stunning in Belgrade - to be all over Dan and overly critical of Kyle would just be fickle imo - I prefer to be supportive of all players at all times. Go Team GB - win it in 5!! :GBflag::GBflag:
It's not about being over critical of Kyle, everyone has dire matches including Sir M, but Kyle doesn't seem to be making any progress at the moment. Dan has ambled along, doing his own thing (and all power to him), but he seems to have grown up recently. He seems to like where he is at, at the moment and wants to stay around. Looking at them both it was like the man v the boy. I appreciate Dan is 4 years older. Kyle has a great deal of talent, but hasn't quite worked out what he wants to do with it.
Well that was fun!!! The British supporters were AMAZING!!! So impressed. The am forum peeps have so much stamina esp considering there must be a little jet lag.
I bumped into Linda on Parliament Hill this morning. She was with another British supporter she'd met at her hotel, called Helen. Anyway we all went out for lunch then walked down to the venue. We had such a great chat about tennis.
Thought Dan was incredible. Kyle seemed a bit flat. Denis was nervous. Vashy was such a pro and I hope his maturity rubs off on Denis.
Looking forward to the dubs. Got to see the teams close up as they walked in. Jamie looked awesome! I had my Team Murray shirt on coz it's the only British shirt I have.
Well done for wearing your Team Murray shirt! I'm so glad they are still being useful. I'm so happy that you have all met up and are having such a great time enjoying the tennis. It will be a battle today for sure
Go team GB :GBflag:

I wouldn't have thought Canada would risk Shapovalov on Sunday to play the deciding singles (if required). Although seeing how Kyle played would give them confidence, I'd have thought Polansky would be a safer bet.

Kyle was very poor but has he played well recently? He certainly won't have the confidence Dan has at present. I would say it is 50/50 at best Defo need to win the dubs, as we can probably only bank on one singles tomorrow.
I agree that we have to win the doubles and even then there's no guarantee. Pospisil will be super confident after his win yesterday. Of course, Dan is super confident too but I still don't think it's a banker. We need Kyle to find his game.

Reflecting on yesterday's performance, what worried me about Kyle was that he had no plan B and didn't change anything up when he got behind. I know the court speed wasn't really suited to him but still if things aren't working, you've got to try something different. We need a win today really, otherwise it's pretty dicey I tnink
Haven't had a chance to read through the comments and was far too tired to come on here after Kyle's match.
I thought Kyle was flat from the start. He seemed to be holding his back a lot at the start of the match (or maybe this was my imagination). Maybe just very tense. Court speed was dire for him. He over-hit so many shots and his serve went awol for a long stretch. Only a few glimpses of good shots we know he's capable of. Hope he can bounce back for Sunday.
Tie very much in the balance now.

Disappointing from Kyle he's had a tough start to the year. We need to win the dubs tomorrow and then at the moment I'm not sure if I'd back Kyle to beat shapolov and on this court dan could find it hard v pops so it's touch and go. But then Kyle has the experience and I doubt shap has played many 5 set matches so you have to give him the edge if it goes to a 5th rubber
I think the first set changed it all as Kyle had all the chances then pops stole it. After that one way in the second and too late to come back after that

100% agree. I once heard soderling (ancient I know, describe a really bad performance as "just a really bad day at the office today. It happens" with a shrug as if he didn't really understand it himself. All the players will have wins and loses it's more apparent when it follows a great performance from a team mate. Kyle was great in Serbia and will be great again, hopefully on Sunday. I hope he can come out with more belief, he seemed deflated from the start, perhaps still down from his last match of the AO. We can still win :) and it will be against France after their win in Japan
and what was Leon doing? did he have a plan B to help Kyle with? Jamie Baker, commentating said Kyle should make Pospisil play backhand, his weaker shot whereas he could get winners all day long on his forehand.
kyle never seemed to get the length right, so many shots went long, he wanted to make every shot into a winner rather than get into a rally and manouvre himself into a position to score a winner. just too young and not tactically savvy yet.

Leon can only do & say so much!!! Kyles the 1out there hitting the shots. And i dont buy the "too young" theory! Hes got PLENTY of experience now.

I was very dissapointed with the way Kyle played, I feel if he is chosen to play for his country then he should have found his A game, very lack lustre performance and there shouldn't be any excuses, not that he made any to be fair,

Kyle seems to have lost all his confidence. He went out at the first round in Sydney (I was choked as I thought we would see him) the first round at the AO. In fact not sure when he last won a key match.
Pity Andy isn't there to talk to him although I am sure he is in touch with them all.
Just hope that Leon can do a good job.....hate the idea of them losing because Andy will feel pretty bad. Having said that, two players in the top 50 should provide good reserves.
Lets hope Jamie recovers his fiery play this afternoon
Interesting commentary from Jamie Baker who has virtually suggested Kyle lacks bottle when it gets tough and also lacks tactical nous.
Does anyone think Jamie is right? I would possibly go along with lacking tactical nous, but lacking bottle? Not sure on that one.

You could see from the way Kyle mishit a lot of shots that he was struggling with the pace of the court. BUT he was still trying to hit with heavy topspin grip he uses. Whereas Dan flattened out his forehand except for when he had the time and space to use it.

I do think it's lack of tactical nous rather than bottle. Kyle had the guts to go out and play against Goffin in Ghent and was fab in Serbia, so not lacking in bottle there. He has had a lacklustre start to the year so I wonder if he's hit that hump that young players sometimes hit once they've made an initial run to the Top 50. The pressure of expectations on him, rather than having nothing to lose. It could be just a blip but he looks lacking in confidence to me at the moment

I think some of the comments about Kyle are a bit harsh. If Kyle was of the view that his game plan was fine but he just needed to execute it better then I feel that is a valid viewpoint given his number of UE. What's more it's much easier to determine from the sidelines what may or may not be working than when in the heat of a match.
All the players have had their highs and lows - thankfully Leon has got more sense than to put the boot in after a low : "The most important thing is to dust it off but focus now on the next matches. There's a lot of tennis to be played". Well said Leon. Jamie and Dom have had horrible DC matches, but with Leon's support come through stronger as I'm sure Kyle will.
And the claim that players should find their A game when playing for their country is completely unrealistic - if players could simply flick a switch and play their best at will Andy would never lose a match in his career because his best is unbeatable. I'm sure Kyle was trying his best, which is all anyone can ask for, and he will be feeling more disappointed than anyone about yesterday : 'It was just not good enough, pretty dismal from my standards. Everyone can accept winning and losing but it needs to be a lot better at this level. I'm just very disappointed for myself, for the team. It's annoying when you have support like that and fans come out and spend money and travel and to put on a performance like that. You just really want to do well."
The lad deserves a break imo, good luck for your next match Kyle :cheer:

Kyle can flick the switch too as he did in Serbia but yesterday for some reason he couldn't do it. Who knows why? He probably doesn't know himself and the court certainly did him no favours. It's good that he was disappointed in his performance, that's all part of the maturing process of a player, learning to use that disappointment in a positive way to improve. Leon will be good at encouraging that mindset and helping Kyle to bounce back.
Jamie has been watching the rugby! Hope the win by Scotland this afternoon inspires him later today!
Good luck Jamie and Dom!

Nearly time! Can't wait - if I had to choose, then dubs is my favourite day - so pivotal and exciting, great for dubs to have its moment in the sun. Go on Jamie and Dom! Can't wait to see Dom the Bomb's big serves on that fast as lightening court teamed with Jamie's sweet volleys. You can do it guys. Behind you all the way. Let's go GB, let's GO! :GBflag::GBflag::GBflag::GBflag::GBflag:

He delivered on wet clay with one of the oppo needing windscreen wipers! Sorry but I'm not a Kyle fan and got very annoyed when Dan was overlooked in his favour. He didn't do the business in Ghent either. I feel he has a fairly one dimensional power game. But I'm sure he was doing his best.

And Vasek has more experience in terms of pressure matches , hes been on the pro tour longer & is a grand slam champ in doubles
