I hope Andy gets to the final, again, but it would depend on the draw. The only guarantee is the BBC will only be showing their five minute highlights again, it felt like it was only five minutes though it was about one and a half hours.

I wonder if this is how it's going to be with Delpo....plays brilliantly and has some fantastic successes, but his body can't sustain the day-in-day-out slog of the tour. Such a shame, hope he's back soon

Delpo out of the Oz Open - believes his is 'not fit enough'.

Bad news, the good news though is he will be replaced by Aljaz, who suffered in 2016 not just the DC decision but also dropping to #101

Is or isn't Del Potro out of the Australian Open? The tournament director of Auckland the week before says he's not heard anything "Budge said there was nothing to worry about in terms of del Potro's participation in the event as far as he was concerned" (http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/sport/tennis/87889769/-).

It's official, the most dangerous first round floater in a slam draw ever is not happening.

Djoko can get back to No 1 if he wins in Oz and Andy goes out before semis, not impossible with Fed and Rafa lurking in the draw. That is much closer than I realised.

Know Djoko still has a lot of points to defend but he has won many tournies in a row before.

Such a shame Verdasco cracked up on all those match points as that would have meant a bigger points difference and Djoko's confidence still shaky instead of sky high again.

Looking like Roger will be #17, Andy or Djok could get him in round3 and Rafa (or Dmitrov) in the last 16, then Nishikori in the QF so you are right about the tough options, hopefully not to Andy, seeding tomorrow and the draw is on Friday

Could somebody confirm the ranges please ... in grand slams, last 32 no. 1 (and no. 2) seed plays... 29 to 32? last 16 13 to 16? last 8 5 to 8?

What I will already say is that given how close they both are, if they were both to get to the final, the wear and tear getting there could have a big impact on the result. Yes, the WTF final was amazing by Andy, but Nole was not in the mental space to run Andy around the court and if you come into a final after two 5 set 4-5 hour tough matches, it will take its toll!

You are nearly correct, David. I think 1-8 play 25-32 in round 3. In last 16 1-4 play 13-16 and 5-8 play 9-12. If I am right then neither Andy nor Novak can meet Rafa or Roger in round 3 or 4.
Hope I haven't got this wrong :shamed:

Andy could be drawn to play Federer in the 4th round as Federer could play (and beat) one of seeds 13-16 in the 3rd round. If Fed is drawn against one of seeds 9-12 (like Nadal) in the 3rd round then the earliest Andy could play Federer (or Nadal) is the quarter-final. As it stands, Steve Johnson will be the highest ranked unseeded player (remember Rio). This Australian Open is speculation draw heaven. ;)

Injury watch which would have an impact on the seedings. Although Kyrgios played the Fast4 event yesterday (and comfortably beat Nadal) he's withdrawn from the exhibition event in Adelaide this week and is undergoing "Iontophoresis" treatment on his knee along with cortisone injections to be fit for the Australian Open.

Djoko not with the hardest draw. Nando has no hope psychologically.

Completely disagree. Nando won't go in with that kind of negative attitude - he will draw confidence from how close he was and bring a determination to go one better. Not saying he *will* do it, just that Nando won't be so weak as to have no hope. Quite a nasty opener for Nole, and would certainly be considered tough if was Andy who had drawn Nando in R1 (esp if Nando had 5mps Andy a week ago there'd be no talk the Spaniard being a push over devoid of psychological hope ;)).

Josephine
13-01-2017, 01:25
Well, we'll see. ;)

I'm sure Verdasco will believe he can win but in any crunch moment, he may doubt himself.

I think Djokovic gained a lot of confidence in Doha.

I think the only tough draw Andy got was the qf, Thiem would have made it a great draw. I certainly expect Andy to be in his sixth final and to have every chance of winning it

I wouldn't swap Andy's first 4 rounds for anyone else, as good as you could get really and I like the fact that he'll face one of Berdych/Nishikori/Federer in the QF who will have beaten each other up to get there. If Stan makes the semi he's a threat, big if mind.

Novak has Nando and an in form Dimitrov to deal with early on when he's shown he's more susceptible.

I believe it's only Wimbledon which has that tradition. It's been announced that Andy's half of the draw will play on Monday.

I wonder if the presence of Federer in that half influenced that????

Will Federer be afforded the scheduling appropriate for a 17th seed? :p ;)

Certainly happy enough with Andy's draw and should be fine if Federer reaches the quarter (by no means guaranteed), Stan seems the biggest threat in his half if he progresses. Can't see too many hurdles for Djokovic and imagine he won't give Verdasco too many chances, though hope Dimitrov can challenge him. Seem reasonable first rounds for Dan,Kyle and Aljaz!

I don't mind Andy's draw. I've decided not to get stressed by the Slam draws this year. Inevitably it won't work out with the predicted opponents - except maybe the final (but Djoker is going to find it tricky I think in the first round if Nando can push him to 5....), so let the dice roll as they will. I feel confident Andy will be there on the 29th with a lovely big shiny trophy to give to Sophia for her 1st birthday :)

As for Fed, it will be a new experience for him ......

jagmad
13-01-2017, 14:02
I wouldn't swap Andy's first 4 rounds for anyone else, as good as you could get really and I like the fact that he'll face one of Berdych/Nishikori/Federer in the QF who will have beaten each other up to get there. If Stan makes the semi he's a threat, big if mind.

Novak has Nando and an in form Dimitrov to deal with early on when he's shown he's more susceptible.

I like this draw.

we have the makings of a good forfeit challenge ;)

How does multi quote work?

What is the challenge though? Very weighted to Novak winning.

My suggestion - if Verdasco wins 2 sets or more, Rosiebear wins. If not I win.

Forfeit:

If Rosie wins, I have to be an incurable optimist (particularly re Andy) for one day of active posting on the forum (that's all I can manage;) ).

If I win, Rosie has to be a total pessimist about Andy's chances and the threats he faces for one day of active forum posting.

:welcome: to the forum Kemperton1981. Please feel free to introduce yourself on here - http://event.ausopen.com/schedules/tournament-schedule/

At the Oz Open they would normally have the men's semis on different days, so if Andy plays on the first Monday and reaches the semis he will be playing the first semi on a Thursday. I guess they would only change it if they get behind with the schedule due to weather etc. Provisional schedule here - http://event.ausopen.com/schedules/tournament-schedule/

I'm pleased that Andy is playing on Monday. i'm not sure if he requests it but he always seems to be at the coo's tail when the schedules come out. This way if the weather plays up he has an easier job to catch up. Interestingly, Tuesday's forecast is for 35 degrees as opposed to a balmy 31 for Monday. Your welcome Djoko!

I won't be staying up during the night, I haven't even made a full week back to work yet. Will have to be content with recording and hiding from the scores until midday. (except on Mondays + Tuesdays when I'm still on phasing back!)

always think its an advantage playing on the first day, means if you get to the final you get 14 days to play 7 matches as opposed to 13 or even 12 at the French, might not seem much difference but such are the margins between these guys smallest little factors can make a massive difference

Pouille pulled out of his previous tournament with an injury, so maybe no surprise there. Nishikori is another carrying an injury and Fuller said he'd be surprised if he made it through the first week (this maybe the odd thing that Fuller gets right). Janowicz is of course a flashy player so Cilic probably rode the storm and then outclassed him.

My money would be on Berdych being Andy's QF opponent.

For anyone interested in seeing a miss-match, well in height at least, there is a clash on 2nd on Court2 tomorrow about 1.30-2am, our "friend" Goff (who is under 6') will be looking up at 6'11" american Reilly Opelka who is still only 19. I'm cheering for the little guy!

Edit:BTW Goff in 2 inches taller than Dan

I was hoping for a re-match of Dan v. Janowicz 1213 (from Davis Cup Liverpool 2009!)

Well we just learned we have two weeks to prep for a council inspection- 3 days of a team of 8 watching us teach, inspecting pupil work, paperwork, talking to pupils etc. So I fear this slam may now be about to pass me by in a blur of lesson planning and resource creation. Here's to happy distractions!

Surprising how many of the top players dropped sets on the first day. It made Andy's 3 straight sets look better than it felt watching it. Perhaps the conditions were not as expected ? Or just the short break took a while to get over ?
But it made Dans result look brilliant

It is now! Sorry RB! But I thought if Nando can't take match point in a 3 setter when Djoko is still on way back, he is never going to do it in a 5 setter once Djoko has come back from that and then beaten Andy.

Like I said Djoko got a lot of confidence from Doha. I never quite bought the whole 'fallen out of love with tennis' thing. He had just achieved everything and had some issues. But now having lost the number 1 ranking, he has something to aim for again- to get that ranking back. He can't be underestimated at Oz open.

Certainly hope Andy can get more aggressive again and get to final and beat Djoko.

Wasn't exactly the best challenge from Nando (even if chances in 2nd) and in the end fairly routine for Djokovic. However had feeling it would be different match this time and Verdasco wouldn't get real chance.

Evo broke the record but only just as the previous longest was 21-19 in the final set. That was between Roddik and El Aynoui and I remember seeing that one.

At 22-20, it was the longest fifth set in the history of the Australian Open, and was the longest match in terms of games since the tiebreak was introduced at the tournament.

The Karlovic-Zeballos match lasted 84 games breaking the Australian Open (http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/tournaments/australian-open/580/overview) record since the introduction of the tie-break in 1972, surpassing Andy Roddick (http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/andy-roddick/r485/overview) and Younes El Aynaoui (http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/younes-el-aynaoui/e121/overview)'s 2003 classic of 83 games – including a 21-19 fifth set.

Great mornings tennis! Dr Ivo plays Andrew Whittington next. Don't know if that will be good or bad for him. Gilles Muller beat Fritz, Fognini got the better of Deliciano and of course great result for our Kyle. Watched a bit of that one and Kyle looked comfortable. (though he did seem to get a bash in the eye which might have hurt a wee bit at the time.).

Verdasco fuming in press conference and is blaming the court on RLA for all those FH shanks. He says it plays like an indoor carpet of the 80s which is perfect for Djokovic and Murray. He said the balls bounced fast and low and weren't true. He also blamed the quality of the balls which felt dead. What's Spanish for sour grapes? ;)

Andy could be on earlier as Muguruza might not make it to the end of her match given she was struggling with a thigh injury in the first round and was barely moving in the second set and but for a huge choke from Erakovic at 4-1 would probably have lost or retired in the third set.

Tremendous win for Mischa Zverev coming back from two sets down to beat Isner 6-7(4) 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(7) 9-7 in 4:10 especially after this (https://twitter.com/doublefault28/status/821613905978032128) happened on his first MP.
