View Full Version : AMFF gathering - September 23rd - Newcastle on Tyne
When Saturday's match nailed our coffin, some of us in Rouen enjoying the group meal that evening, realised that no more DC this year meant us forum folk wouldn't be getting together again this year either :crying::crying:
We didn't like that idea at all so a few of us hatched a proposal (originally suggested by angiebabez so thanks Ange!) for a forum meet up perhaps the weekend of the DC semi in September as a lot of us have kept that weekend free. We did think of Liverpool. However, I have looked at hotels and it seems very expensive that weekend (yes, even the Premier Inn!)
So .... any suggestions welcome and it would be great to know who might be interested. We thought just Saturday night so it's just the weekend and no extra time off work needed, but of course people can stay longer if they wish.
It is a great idea and I know we are free and would go anywhere that's good for everyone else.
I guess it is football season. Leeds would be good for those headed down from Scotland and up from the south. They have had a lot of development in the past 10 years. If we were looking further south maybe oxford?
Kev suggested Blackpool because he is a big kid lol or Newcastle because he's never been there.
Nothing to do with the Blackpool lights, then JerryD?
Great idea, I'm up for that.
North is probably better for all the Scottish contingent. Blackpool might be fun or Leeds I've never been to. Really strange how expensive Liverpool is! It wasn't when we went for DC before.
Kev knows more about Blackpool than me, I've only been twice and I thought switch on was end of September. The lights actullay go on early September though so would be ok then :) both times I went it was in the summer and to the pleasure beach, I do love the rides :) I've never seen the lights. Even though I've lived in Liverpool for 11 years this may.
Been to Leeds and number of times and went again in December to see placebo. It was lovely though very cold lol.

I would prefer a meetup with some tennis, only tournament in September nearby is Metz, the week following DC. Obviously more expensive to go abroad though and I guess not so much support for it.

The whole idea of it is to make it accessible for most of us which metz isnt lol. Personally i wouldnt be interested in going to one that doesnt have Andy or Team GB in it but thats just me. I quite like the idea of having a meet up with no tennis for a change, most of the time in the arenas you havent got the chance to mingle & get to know folks properly.
I would def be interested. Obv the further North, the easier it would be for me. Newcastle would be good -or Durham - or York (Eastcoast trainline!!)
Would very much depend on where for me.

London would be great but I am sure that isn't a runner
All sounds good and most venues accessible easily from where we are in the Midlands. Happy to fit in with the consensus. Blackpool would be lovely but the illuminations start from 1st Sept I think so that might be premium time to go there on a Saturday night ??? York always fab (we could have posh afternoon tea at Bettys Tea Room lol !) and sounds like mainline trains pass through there from Scotland ??? Would Newcastle put off our friends from the south ??? Will do some research on prices of Prem Inns !!!!
The lights are switched on in the first so it's 2 weeks later, initial buzz will die down. Prices don't seem bad so maybe most go for the switch on. I did look at York but it was very pricey. I didn't check out premier inn prices though as we usually stay in other hotels
I never stay in any Premier Inn.
I remember seeing the Blackpool lights years ago, as I had to stay there whilst on my way to Glasgow for a DC tie. I think they were doing a Doctor Who special.

Would be interested if travel easy enough for me (Liverpool would have been ideal - not sure why hotel prices so high that weekend, can't see any major events on in the city). Newcastle no good for me - too difficult by train
Blackpool is do-able - Saturday night is hen-party night so it gets a bit ...ahem, lively, just so you know
Leeds would be ideal for me - mum lives there ;)
However, I can't get the Friday off work some swine already has it, so anything for me would be one of my mad dash weekends!

York would be a good place for all to get to ... on the East Coast mainline for those in Scotland and not difficult by train from the West side (direct trains from Liverpool via Manchester, 1 change for those around St Helens, easy via Bristol for those coming up from the south-west, and on the mainline from London north to Scotland. It's got plenty of interest (and Betty's) and folks wanting to make more of a night of it could get across to Harrogate or Leeds for a few hours if they wanted to.
Leeds is probably more lively in terms of nightlife but that could make it more difficult to fix somewhere for a 'group' nosh. It's on most routes from the West to York anyway so most of the above paragraph would apply in terms of trains. Probably more designer shops than York ... so nothing to fit me!!!
;)

York is such a lovely place. It gets my vote. Lets face it....it doesnt need to be TOO lively, except for a few none of us are young guns out looking for the best nightclubs anymore

I stayed in 1 a few years back with gordon. It is very central if my memory serves me right.
Which is that, or on which site. It comes up as £170 for one night for me which it too pricey for a night.
I have made a FLEXIBLE booking -incase there is a change of plans - at the Premer Inn North in Blossom St. VERY handy for the station.

No worries at all. As long as we can help each other & hopefully manage to meet up.xx
So, we now know we're meeting up in York but I will probably be staying at a different hotel (of which, it should be free for me). We now just have to agree whereabouts in York and what time.

It's the weekend before I go away for 11 days. Don't think my partner would be pleased if I came for a jolly. He would just have to accepted it had we still been in DC!!
I know that date was because we all already had it free, hoping for a semi. I don't mean to complicate things but if the weekend before or after is better for others then we are fine with that. We will just follow the crowd lol
I have been looking at restaurants in York for an evening meal but we would need numbers for a better idea of where to book. The thread hasn't been live for long, thank you caro for doing it, so maybe in a day or two we will have more members wanting to come :)

Edinburgh was a lot cheaper that weekend-1 night 114 or 115 for several city centre travelodges!!!
Liverpool was cheaper than that too that's why I'm wondering if I'm missing a bargain site or hotel deals elsewhere as I thought the reason to look elsewhere was Liverpool being expensive. I think we will stay outside and walk in or drive in and not drink. If anyone finds a hotel for less than £150 post it here lol. I've never been to York before so am looking forward to it but also looking for cheaper than £150 for a night lol
We are away in Morocco for 2 weeks in September which is over that weekend so sadly we won't be able to come. I had panicked a bit when I realised that the semis would have been then! Hope you all get something organised.
You're right Jerry, we were initially thinking Liverpool but was coming up very expensive. Gill had found a travelodge in York for £61 a night but when I tried it was coming up at £199! Waaayyy too expensive! I'll have another look later. I don't mind where we go as long as it's not too much money and preferably accessible by train.
I can do the weekend after if that suits more people but not the weekend before
I thought you must have found a cheaper one somewhere but just couldn't find it myself lol though o only tried booking.com and hotels.com and the pi and travellodge websites before I had to get back to it :) I have found a pi 30 mins walk outside the city for £100 a night which is more affordable :)

York has a good park+ ride system. Been a few years since I used it but once stayed in a PI by a park + ride just outside York. Sorry can't remember its name tjough

Yes sounds like the same one. The roads around there aren't too pedestrian friendly, it's on a kind of ring-road from what I remember. Might be worth Google Streetviewing it. Mind you it's about 5 years since I went so my memory is a bit hazy

Tend to agree with you Angie.
Any more than £50 for a hotel room and I'm out too!
Everyone checking the prices must have pushed the price up. The Travelodge is now more than three times the price it was this morning. I would have booked it then, but there were suggestions that the meetup might be changed to a different weekend or different city.
At the minute it's not looking too practical for me both in terms of time and expense. Home to airport = 2 hours, airport to airport another 2 hours (minimum), transfer from Leeds/Br to York another 2 hours, so I would have to travel on the Friday, meaning 2 nights in a hotel. It's all mounting up! Would be disappointed if it doesn't happen for me, but we'll see. Not given up yet!

When the DC was on we paid 70 a night for our PI don't forgot that recent political changes have upped the cost off everything including hotels. I was looking at our usual Cairngorms haunt for kev's birthday and it has gone up 25% !!
The north York PI is a 30 minute walk and reviews feature many who have done it. Though from how booked up York is it seems that it's an expensive weekend to go there. The next weekend isn't any cheaper. Liverpool is a fortune too, sadly I don't have a enough room to squeeze you all in lol. Harrogate is cheaper and near York but I think most people were happy with York.

What is it with Sept hotel rooms?
- the children are back at school so those who don't have them take hols in September
- it's usually very good weather the first 2/3 weeks of September so it's prime wedding time
- because 'working' life has begun again there's likely to be more conferences/events happening.
- York isn't a seasonal destination, so busy most of the year
Perhaps we need to take over a Youth Hostel for the weekend?

Or change the month?...maybe early october be better
:big grin:
Or a cheaper destination all round like Newcastle or Durham. I don't think you will find york much cheaper in October. We (to avoid children and celebrate kev's birthday) tend to go away end September/ early October, after the second week in October those with children start taking early holidays to avoid the half term price hike.
With prices so high, many of us wouldn't be able to stretch to that. This was meant to be a cheap and cheerful meet up. If moving the weekend forward is acceptable we could try that but it doesn't look like it's any cheaper does it? Are there any other cities we could try? What about Sheffield or Chester? Both nice places but again I don't know about cost.
If we can't find somewhere around the £60 per room mark, it looks like it's going to be a non starter .... That would be a real shame ...

The prices do seem high. A youth hostel out of season sounds good. One of the smaller hostels might be fun. Do you want me to investigate for after October half term?

It's my dad's 70th this summer- actually on day of Wimbledon final so if Andy would leave like to give him a special gift we'd be much obliged! Anyway, current family talk is that we're giving him a trip to Ireland- but t the whole family may go. If so it's going to be in September to tie in with when we can all make itSo I need to see how this pans out date and cost wise before committing to anything else in September . So don't feel I should be commenting on where the catch up should be given I may not make it. But I'm paying close attention and will see if I can get it all to work out.

Yeah, I know it's not "destination city" but most of the year it'd be quite affordable!
And I'm guessing what we really want is chance to chinwag for a few hours over several glasses of wine so the peripherals, whilst nice, are not in theory key to the success of the amffering. That is a new word for the OED.

I keep going back to the rail map to check out cities/towns that are ACCESSIBLE.
Darlington is coming up with a few places at £50/£60 per night. Newcastle - not bad price wise and the City Centre is BUZZVILLE!!! Jesmond is great for a spot of style ... and designer shopping.
Wakefield? There's a fantastic Sculpture Park to visit just outside the town.
And shoppers could easily zip to Leeds ...

Liverpool Travel Lodges coming up between £45 and £60 for 16th Sept. when I looked just now!
I expect that is in Norris green. It's north of the city (not really walkable) put more particularly in a rough area. Or over on the Wirral. The ones in town are still over £120

At least 3.5 miles from town (Wallasey) and also Norris Green and the Wirral, even includes Warrington! Flexible rates/wifi actually £62-£93.
Have been following along with this from the other side of the pond.
Has anyone thought of getting a large property that might accommodate you all. One of the problems I saw with a few that I had a quick look at is that although some are close to large cities they are not in the cities. Anyway, here's the link, just in case. This is for England but you can search for Scotland, Wales and Ireland as well.
The talk of prices has really interested me as we hope to come to UK at the end of September/October and stay until the New Year. Looking at the prices you have all been seeing for hotels may have to rethink the length of stay.
https://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/europe/england?sleeps=20-plus
Perhaps an idea might be for people to express a provisional interest and give an idea of their preferred price range.
A passing thought was are their any Challenger Tournaments or even Futures knocking about at that time that might give a tennis focus for one day. It might be quite fun to turn up en mass with flags and T Shirts...............

Sheffield a bit far for me for 1 night. Sorry to be a pain. If the majority wants it though i dont mind dropping out. Its gonna be so difficult getting somewhere that suits all. Newcastle ok x
If the mods could open a sticky for people who are interested, and where they are located. I could plot it on a map. To get some idea of the most central point. I could just about manage that one pawed.
Are we looking at just one night, and is the date firmed up?

Its up to folks themselves how long they want to stay...some may want to make a weekend out of it. Personally im just looking at 1 night to keep costs down. And no i dont think the date is firmed up.
I will check costs for Newcastle angie
Looks like A decent place in Newcastle will be around £71 for a night. If this is too much then is Darlington ok? As Sally suggested. It is two stops from Newcastle in the train :)

Had another look at Newcastle and is more do-able than I thought by train (as is Durham). Accommodation would need to be reasonable as the train fare is coming out at £88 at the moment but might go down when advance fares are released 12 weeks before. Never been to Newcastle but heard great things about it so happy to go there if the price is right

Anyone over 60 needs to use £15 Tesco Clubcard vouchers to buy for "free" a £30 Senior Railcard.
Then you get 1/3rd off most Rail journeys in the UK ... it's easy to get and well worth it.
The card has to be carried with you when you travel but I've never been asked for other ID ...
Some folks think you have to be over 65 to get one but their T&Cs are quite clear!
You're eligible for a Senior Railcard if you are 60 years old or over. You can buy one up to two weeks before your 60th birthday if you buy online, but it’ll only be valid from your birthday onwards. If you buy from a station, you’ll have to be 60 or over on the day you do it.
http://www.senior-railcard.co.uk/using-your-railcard/the-benefits/
Your Railcard doesn’t just save you money on travel. It saves you money with our partners too – on days out, museums, hotels and more. Visit our Offers and Rewards (http://www.senior-railcard.co.uk/offers-and-rewards/offers/)area regularly to keep up to date on the great deals available.
Not that I'm suggesting any of you are THAT old ...

Fab Pat. Same here, snapped it up as easy to cancel if date or venue changes, or a better hotel deal comes along. I will be able to just stay the Saturday night. Will keep looking for other hotels in case there's a better deal. Caledonian looks to be a little outside of the city centre but Metro stop nearby

Some decent prices on the hotels on own website eg. £54 for single room, can cancel upto 24 hours before but downside is you have to pay on booking. What's very bizarre is they want £170.50 for B+B. Must be one heck of a breakfast at over £100 :faint:
Having a early nose at restaurants...can't confirm until we know numbers but it never hurts to be prepared.
The initial idea was for a meet in Liverpool before pricing made it impossible, I would have been happy to sort a restaurant then, so I don't mind doing it for Newcastle instead :)
Unless anyone else has any particular knowledge or would like to.
Is Newcastle on the 23rd Sept a done deal then? Would like to buy my plane ticket but holding back until 100% sure! :boogie:

Quite often after we have a group meal, I feel as if I would like to have had the chance to chat to more people but it is difficult to get to speak to everybody as we are at separate tables, so it would be nice if we could meet up somewhere prior to a meal and have enough time to chat and mingle freely and enjoy an aperitivo! If folks want to STAY near to one another, to make meeting up easier/share taxis etc, the best thing to do is go to somewhere like booking.com, click on the Caledonian and then 'view on map'. It brings up all the other hotels in the area and some are in the same price range as the Caledonian. e.g. Carlton, Cairn, Whites (all on Osborne Rd), Jesmond Park, Dene, Adelphi, New Northumbria.
Jesmond is a smart suburb of Newcastle so it's not at the heart of the City but that has advantages.
This is from a tourism site ...
http://www.newcastlegateshead.com/plan-your-visit/about-the-area/jesmond
Just north of Newcastle City Centre, Jesmond is a fashionable, leafy suburb inhabited increasingly by students and young professionals. It's beautiful rows of terraced houses are interrupted by a wide variety of eclectic boutiques, cafes and restaurants, and Jesmond Dene, an area of outstanding natural beauty, is just on the doorstep.
Jesmond's two Metro stations provide convenient access to newcastle City Centre, which can also be easily accessed on foot, making it a great place to visit for a day, while it's wide selection of hotels and acommodation make it one of the best places to stay outside of the city centre. Why not try the newly refurbished Holiday Inn Newcastle Jesmond for a contemporary room in a great location.
Make sure to visit Osborne Road for a great night out at its many bars and restaurants, or make yourself at home at one of its many hotels. The Caledonian Hotel is situated at the heart of this bustling strip and, combining Georgian architecture with a contemprary edge, also houses the Billabong Bar, with excellent gastro pub style menu, or Billabong Bistro, for delicious Asian-fusion cuisine. Alternatively, spend an evening in As You Like It, a sprawling venue over three floors which includes four stunning bars, an elegant garden terrace and a restaurant serving locally sourced, home-style cooking at its very best, as well as playing host to a wide variety of regular and special events.
For a really luxurious stay check into the beautiful, boutique hotel Jesmond Dene House, or enjoy Modern British cuisine served with style and elegance in their three AA rosette restaurant. Situated in the heart of Jesmond Dene, the beautiful Georgain building is bathed in the peace and tranquility of this wooded valley criss-crossed with paths and dotted with waterfalls and rustic bridges. Look out for kingfishers and red squirrels.
Visit Acorn Road to find a selection of unique boutques to browse alongside cafes in which to while away the afternoons as you watch the world go by, or visit Brentwood Avenue for a similar cafe-culture, boutique-rich experience.
Sounds like a good choice. Glad you have all managed to sort something out. Wish I knew if I would be in UK by then but can't say for definite.
Know you will all have fun. :)

The thread still hasn't been live that long so there may be more to join. If I've left you off or not added your +1 or you decide not to go just post on here and I'll change the list. If I have added you in error, just let me know.

Have e-mailed The Caledonian asking if they have a function room available for Saturday afternoon/early evening. Cardboard Andy and flag could make an appearance there. Will let you know when I hear from them and will you let me know if you think it's a good idea.
angie ... just thinking about it if you did want to bring Andy to the meal we could always ask the restaurant if they could babysit until the next day. I've done it with birthday cake before now as I didn't fancy taking it dancing lol.
Sigh...... I'll be in Portugal AGAIN. I'm originally a Geordie so missing out on a chance to visit "home" :grrr:

Think I'll be in Ireland! We can have extra drinks to toast everyone! Or .... be there via Skype!
I hope I've been counted in, even though I'll be staying at another hotel.
Yep stell you are on the list :) I'm looking in the centre so everyone is covered no matter where they stay x
Booked my flights! Arriving Friday night (22nd) and leaving Sunday afternoon (24th)! :boogie:

That's good - can't book the train until 3 months before when the cheap tickets come on sale. I like to get in, so I can get first class. Hoping a friend will come up with me to visit her Grandson. May stay Sat as well - haven't decided yet.
Yeah I think a few people got quite a shock when they saw the train prices but they will go down :)

I'm going to set off Saturday morning, to get there early afternoon
I've really no option but to travel on Friday. I could have got a flight on Sat morning, but at very silly o'clock! Would have had to get up at 3.30am and if I did that, I doubt if I could survive the Saturday evening!

Sounds like a plan. Thank you for your email by the way, I just hadn't had a chance to reply, for some reason it's stopped working on my phone. Keeps saying there is a problem with the password! What time is your flight back ok Sunday?

Flight on Sunday is 15.50. No need to reply to email! Glad you got it ok! x
Getting very addled witted. I am booked in for Sat night, but might decide to come Friday. Depends on dog care. Can get from home to Newcastle by about 14:00.
