My mother swears by gargling with salt .... not something I'd like doing ... never done it lol!

You might be better to be checked - could be tonsillitis?

Gargling with salt...remember that and I have done it though it's not pleasant. Hope everyone feels better soon.:grouphug::grouphug: My elbow/arm is completely recovered. Don't understand it at all as yesterday it was much better and by the time we went to the Silver Wedding party at 7.30 completely gone. Back to normal! Weird.:surprised:

Have u ever done a sinus cleanse ? with a netty pot ?

VamosVixs

A netty pot? What on earth is that?

hfwardhouse
15-10-2012, 13:59
I suspect ljs is suggesting you inhale hot water - maybe with some menthol or something in it - that might help? I could, of course, be completely misinterpreting her suggestion!

ljs

here Vixs watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e22Ta7iRgks&feature=related

I had 2 sinus infections & 2 bad headcolds in a row last year , so my doctor suggested I try this . I wasnt keen at first , but it really works.

You dont need to go out and buy a specific pot either , I just used a little teapot , or a little creamer jug would work too .

Just google neti pot and you'll see lots of info on it , might be worth a try . It will really clear out your sinuses .

VamosVixs

I'm not keen on trying that. Does it hurt?

ljs
15-10-2012, 16:23
no it doesnt hurt at all !!

It really clears out your sinuses , and your throat and all that is connected so it helps there too .

I wasnt keen on trying it either Vixs , but I do it once a week now and I havent had a cold since I started it .

:grouphug: Vixs. There are also other devices you can use, rater than a netti pot.

Also, have you tried a simple saltwater spray to spray in your nose that you can buy - a bit less messy than water?

Crumbs - don't fancy the look of the netti pot.

My Dad used to sit, with a towel over his head, over a basin of boiling water. I think he used to put something menthol like in the water but I'm not sure what it was. Anyway the steam used to clear his sinuses a treat.

Very slowly coming out of a long bout of anxiety/depression. Spent weeks in bed and lost a stone. Had a really bad attack and was taken to casualty as they thought it was my heart. Spent a week in hospital having every test imaginable and after following dear Andy for 7 years missed the last week of the US Open and because I was so low I am sure I didnt feel the joy I should have done. Have watched it on dvd since and it has been the only thing for weeks where I could actually cry. Havent even wanted to write poems, a blessing some of you might thinK!! but maybe I will feel like it soon. Have missed this site, not turning on my computer for weeks. Hope everyone on this thread will feel better soon xx

Antibiotics can take a few days to kick in; everyone responds to them differently.
Our resident pharmacist is doing some real work tonight but I'm sure she'll be able to give a more scientific answer when she logs in later!!!

Hope you feel better soon - there's some horrible bugs/infections going around at the moment.

That's reassuring. Hopefully I will notice a difference over the next few days. The anti-biotic I am taking is called Clarithromycin. Just in case anyone knows if that's any good or not, or would suggest another?

But if the flu set off an ear and throat infection then antibiotics would be prescribed to deal with that.

Yep that's what seemed to have occurred. Had the flu initially then the infections subsequently.

Ears are still all clogged up, it's terribly frustrating as I can't hear things probably. Saw on the internet that if you put some hot pepper sauce up your nose and inhale it right up your nose then that will unblock your ears. So I did that and I started sweating like crazy, it felt as if I was going to die :rolling: clogged up ears is that infuriating though that I'll try anything!

Hopefully the anti-biotics kick in soon.

I dunno about that. When my kids got ear infections and throat infections the doc would always say antibiotics won't work coz it's a virus. If it's a bacterial infection like strep throat then yes to a-biotics.

Yes, that's what I meant but perhaps didn't make the distinction enough. I've been to the doctor before now feeling awful and got nothing prescribed because it was viral. The virus that started on 2nd Jan led to pleurisy (lung inflammation after a heavy cold/cough) so when I went to my GP 8 days later she prescribed antibiotics to combat it. I've also had 'secondary' infected catarrh that reinfected my throat and had antibiotics 'cos it was then bacterial rather than viral.

I missed this page earlier! This is exactly how I took pleurisy, chest infection which wasn't caught quickly enough! It was a really bad year, my Dad had died, mum a year earlier and had been off work because then my brother moved in with us and had to get a new day centre. Everything was upside down and the doc said I was run down. I am normally really healthy but since then every time I get cold I can feel it in the same place. Pleurisy is down inside the lungs though so would it respond to the far infrared in the same way an inflamed back from muscle stress would? Sad to say it seems that once you've had it you're likely to feel it again whenever you get a infection on your chest.

I've a sneaky feeling this conversation belongs on the ailments thread .........

Yup, the heat from FIR can penetrate a few inches, so it could get deeper than muscles. You can put the heat onto accupuncture points too, eg. the accupuncture points for the lungs on the back. Lamps which are at a certain range between mid and far infrared are more penetrating.

I know of some people who have bought the infrared light bulbs that are used for lambing and they hang them up and lie underneath them- a cheap alternative. But all of these different lights have slightly different ranges and certain ranges are better for some things than others. I believe some people use the cheap infrared bulbs for infections.

Can I just say that I suffer terribly from the same, but its particularly bad at this time of year - living in these northern reaches we hardly get any daylight in winter, and that makes it worse. However, I am a big convert to the wonders of Vitamin D. this is the 2nd year I've been taking it, and I have coped a lot better. Could just be the placebo effect of course, but even if it is I think its still worth it. And I don't seem to get the same number of colds/viruses either - when I stopped taking it in June (thinking, oh good - summer - don't need artificial Vit D), I had the most horrendous virus for weeks on end that developed into an ear and chest infection needing antibiotics. So just saying, if you don't take Vit D it might be worth trying.

I am suffering with my back. I can only describe it as like toothache in one particular area on my left side. It's been going on for days. Had a respite from Monday until last night. And today it is really getting on my nerves. It's not preventing me from doing anything but it stabs at me. Have taken pain killers and SGramps has sprayed it. Just hope it goes for Saturday when son and daughter-in-law are coming for overnight stay.

I can't even guess what is is as it stabs at me and when supergramps massages my back can't always pinpoint the exact spot. I had mild acne since I was 20 , and anti-biotics always cleared it up. However the acne always returned. 3 months ago it returned and it was the worst I'd ever experienced before. I have not opted to continue with anti-biotics, and going down a natural route. Using manuka honey, aloe vera and improving my diet. Noticed improvement all ready. Disappointing spent vast amount on dermatologists, and anti-biotics. They never warn you off the dangers of such medication Don't tell you for example that anti-biotics remove all the good bacteria in your body as well the bad. Leaving behind candia dead fungus in the process.

Oh well grateful for this experience as now I'm more aware about what's good for my body. Just wish I'd never taken anti-biotics in the first place, but I wasn't to know.

How frustrating Dave. Mr P had similar problems with eczema. The med profession couldn't do anything and actually said he was allergic to so many things it wasn't worth trying to find the culprit. He was on steroid cream for years - nasty stuff. Then we did our own investigation and found he was allergic to yeast. You wouldn't believe how many things have yeast in them. He then eradicated yeast from his diet and also, on recommendation from his nephew, started taking evening primrose capsules in vast quantity - 12 a day and the improvement was incredible. What's more it became available on prescription. A few years later and we decided to see if he could tolerate low levels of yeast. He could and now eats/drinks things containing yeast in sensible quantities and he's fine.

Yup, long term antibiotics do affect the gut. It might not just be yeasts though, as one can have different bacterial inbalances in the gut too. It might be worth taking probiotics. In fact even better it might also be worth eating some fermented foods such as kefir, saurkraut etc as these are meant to be better at repopulating the gut than yoghurt and probiotics. I've just started trying to make my own kefir.

What foods contain yeast in them?

There are yeasts in lots of stuff (e.g. fruit, beer, wine, bread, stock cubes), but you only need to avoid yeast if you are actually allergic to yeasts. If you are fermenting yeasts in your gut, its the yeast in your gut you want to get rid of - and their favourite food is sugar, so sugar is the best food to avoid so you don't feed the yeast.

I used to be a bad yeast fermenter - I was 1/4 the legal limit for drink driving after a sugar load!!!!! But I got them under control eventually.

Lots and probably ones you wouldn't realise. So anthing that ferments - cheese, yogurt and anything with vinegar in it e.g. some baked beans (you need to read tins/packets), ketchup etc etc as well as the ones mentioned above.

Don't put the dentist off!!! Every 6 months. I know it's not the best seat in the house, but it is well worth it.

I visit mine regularly, and in the past year, my dentist found I had a cyst in my jaw. I had to have 2 teeth out, which I was dreading, but can highly recommend sedation. The wound then had to be packed and repacked for about 6 weeks. Finally I had a gum shield fitted which I have had to wear for the past 3 months. At my visit to the dental hospital last week, I was finally told I didn't need to wear that anymore and the bone has finally started regrowing in my jaw.

Luxury is eating a soft nectarine/peach without it exploding juice everywhere because your lower teeth are covered by a blunting gum shield. So, I don't eat like I have no table manners anymore, lol.

I have to add, that I hate going to the dentist, but if the cyst hadn't been found, goodness only knows how big it would have grown and what other damage, other than 2 teeth going, it may have done.

Only gripe is I didn't get the teeth back so the 'tooth fairy' didn't visit!:big grin:

Once a year is enough for me thanks!
Its the injection I have issues with as hate needles the actual treatment once numbed up is ok. So being sedated wouldnt be any better as needle for that is far worse. My dentist is pretty good and understands my phobia so prenumbs my gum with a cream first then I dont feel a thing!

I think the problem with physios is that they are usually the healthy sporty type. They have little understanding of just how difficult disability can be. I once got soundly told off by a physio for using the wrong movements to get myself out of the bath. It was only with the greatest of restraint that I didn't ask her how the xxxx she expected me to do it, given half my joints didn't work properly.

Keep strong.

No, but I haven't fallen over so I don't suppose anything is broken. It has improved quite a bit today, I expect in a week or so I'll be fine - until the next time.

An X-ray isn't just to determine whether or not you've broken something. It can show a problem with a joint e.g. misalignment. My chiropractor thought I had a hip joint problem with my first hip after a couple of treatments and insisted I go to my GP for an X-ray before doing anything else. I did but of course GP's don't look at X-rays any more, they just read the radiographer's report. Mine said "degeneration of lower back, hip normal" so I spent a year being told I didn't really want an op on my back. Then the pain became so bad that I referred myself to a back specialist who, having examinded me, then pulled up the X-ray pictures from 10 months before, looked at them and said "it's not your back, it's your hip"!!!

Pain can also be referred - I had a lot of pain in my knee when my hip was bad until finally it DID settle in the hip joint itself. Only an MRI scan will show if you have arthritis or inflammation though.

Talking of arthritis and back pain. I started having pins and needles in both hands in June, already having had arthritis for many years waited a couple of weeks to see if it would settle down, didn't so saw my GP. I had blood tests, Xray etc., inconclusive so referred to Physio. She did a really thorough check and was convinced it was compression in the spine and ordered a MRI which was done 4 days before Christmas on a Sunday!! Monday evening the physio telephoned me to say there was definitely problems in my cervical vertebrae and one disc has collapsed. The nerves are also being compressed ergo, pins and needles in my hands which has now progressed to stiffness and lack of sensitivity. She is referring me to an Orthopaedic surgeon who may or may not do a decompression, the risks are very high of doing more damage. I am now awaiting the apt but am continuing with swimming and playing tennis. Might as well go down fighting!!

Hi all, just a wee quick post, we've had a crazy month or so. Hubby's dad took ill in March, a massive stroke early one morning. My mum in law fractured a bone in the base of her spine getting him back into bed while waiting for my hubby to go along and for the ambulance to arrive. He was then taken in to hospital where he responded by opening his eyes a few days later, actually within hours of the deadline to turn off machines. Sadly he passed away at the beginning of April. During the time he was in hospital Derek, my hubby, wakened me to say he thought he was showing signs of a heart attack and turned out he was right. Test showed he had had it that morning, must admit we actually laughed when the test came back, 142 instead of around 14. We just laughed at the ridiculous timing and how crazy things were. As most of you know we are carers for my brother who has Downs Syndrome and we had had a few hours respite for him, which turned into 2 weeks! Anyway all settling down now. we were supposed to be in Italy over easter which means Philip (my brother) is on hols in respite so we are off to stay at the Culloden hotel which we got for booking our daughter's wedding there last September. (just priced it and some eejits pay £820 for what we've got) :) Anyway I thought you would like a wee update, I am still following the tennis and hoping Andy really is healed properly and ready for the red stuff! Will be in touch :) thanks for being our sounding board :grouphug:

Yes, making good progress thanks. It still doesn't like having pressure put through it, but I think the nerve damage is improving. Strangely enough it has never been that painful - probably because the cuts were deep enough not to have many sensory nerve endings.

Cleaning a glass jar. It shattered, cutting a tendon and nicking a nerve in my dominant hand. Two days before DC. So I couldn't go. Had to have an op. A complete pain. :-)

Hmmmm had my first ever experience, in the nearly 30 years we've lived here, this morning of not being able to get a doctor's appointment for today......earliest is Friday. No wonder people end up at A&E. I did something as I moved a few days ago and it felt for all the world as though I pinched something between the bottom of my ribs and ????? on the right side. It was painful for a day when I breathed/coughed but that has gone. However, to the touch it's extremely tender below my ribs. Clearly I'm not dying so don't need A&E but I would like some reassurance that I haven't damaged anything important. Sigh.

Hi Stell, I am very sorry to hear your news because I went through this last year. I can only tell you to be strong in the next few months. PM me if you ever want to talk. In the meantime I would advise you to be as proactive as possible, talk to people who've been through it and read survivors' blogs - that all helped me immensely.

Many thanks for your kind words. If I hadn't gone for the mammogram on the 12th March, I would never have known. As it's in my left breast and there is no lump. The woman, who did the mammogram, told me that it didn't look right and I had to inform my doctor immediately. On Tuesday, the consultant thought the cancer had spread to my lungs but couldn't give a diagnosis as to what is there. It couldn't have been very serious as, if anything had shown up on the CT scan, someone would have phoned me.

When I last saw the consultant, she gave me three options and believed the oncologist would go for the first one, which would be tablets with the occasional blood test. But, it would depend on what the CT scan showed, as she told me that they were already looking at it when I last saw her.

I wasn't allowed to go to the hospital, instead the doctor phoned me. He confirmed what the consultant had told me and then told me that the CT scan had showed my lung has got a bit of cancer and one or two bones have it as well. He wants to see me next Thursday. He believes the treatment will be tablets with the occasional blood test, but he wants the periods to stop before the treatment begins. So, I'll be put onto something else beforehand.

I had to have a blood test, after seeing the doctor, yesterday afternoon. I then had to pick up my tablets, which I've now started taking. The doctor told me to take them once a day for three weeks and then stop for one week. I was also given an appointment for the 4th of next month to have my first injection. This will stop the periods, as the doctor told me, the oestrogen and the hormones in my body are helping the cancer and it needs to be stopped.

Good luck! This is very different from my cancer treatment. But mine was estrogen-fuelled too (I think around 70% of breast cancer is caused by estrogen). Now I have to take Tamoxifen for five years (estrogen blocker). So these tablets you are taking, are they chemo tablets?

Stell
23-05-2020, 12:14
My tablets are also Tamoxifen. I have to take them for three weeks and then stop them for a week. The doctor offered me two treatments, both of which were tablets with the injections. Tamoxifen are supposed to be the mild version.
