GB have to win the tie v Israel (score not important) to advance
Are you sure? Thought it was posted earlier that Peer had lost and then Portugal won the doubles so .....

Please correct me if wrong. Then GB could go through even if they lost, or would it be head-to-head result first, in which case I see what you mean. But if Portugal beat the Netherlands and 3 countries tied, wouldn't it come down to matches and then sets....
Israel beat the Netherlands 2-1 GB beat Portugal 3-0
GB beat the Netherlands 2-1 Portugal beat Israel 2-1 (need that confirming not sure as I was out)

That would make GB 2 Israel 1 Portugal 1 The Netherlands 0
So scenarios for tomorrow could be GB 3 no problem or GB 2 Israel 2 then if PT 1 and the Neth 1 do Israel go through head to head
or what about GB 2 Israel 2 and the Neth 0 Presumably then it would be match score which at the moment is
GB 5/6 Israel 3/6 Portugal 2/6 the Netherlands 2/6
Then GB would need to win one match tomorrow if there was a threeway tie for first place....

Shouldn't be speculating as I do not know the rules!

-J-
02-02-2012, 21:01
Are you sure? Thought it was posted earlier that Peer had lost and then Portugal won the doubles so isn't the score so far GB 2 W The Netherlands 0 Israel 1 and Portugal 1

#FedCup (https://twitter.com/#%21/search?q=%23FedCup) Pool C: If I've got t/b rules right, winner of GB v ISR advances unless POR beat NED, then GB winning 1 rubber tomorrow prob enough

david1610
02-02-2012, 21:16
Ok... must be head to head then but..... POR could do us a big favour as I would have thought Israel, with Peer, would have been a much tougher ask, and they have done that. They also still have a chance and the Netherlands do not, so you never know!

In case anyone is wondering (as some were on BT), the article on the Fed Cup website at http://www.fedcup.com/en/news/articles/europeafrica-zone-group-i-day-2.aspx is correct in what it says about qualification from Pool C but it misses out lots of the possible outcomes. I stand by what I said yesterday (the tweets J re-posted in here) but if things get close later on, it might help to see the possibilities set out one by one instead of just taking my word for it, so here goes!

GBR win -> GBR the only team with 3 tie wins -> GBR go through whatever happens in NED v POR

ISR win & NED win -> GBR & ISR both with 2 tie wins, NED & POR 1 -> 2-way tie -> ISR go through on H2H v GBR

ISR win & POR win -> GBR, ISR & POR all with 2 tie wins, NED 0 -> 3-way tie -> decided on matches won as follows:

ISR 3-0 & POR 3-0 -> GBR 5, ISR 6, POR 5 -> ISR go through
ISR 3-0 & POR 2-1 -> GBR 5, ISR 6, POR 4 -> ISR go through

ISR 2-1 & POR 3-0 -> GBR 6, ISR 5, POR 5 -> GBR go through
ISR 2-1 & POR 2-1 -> GBR 6, ISR 5, POR 4 -> GBR go through

So, as mentioned above, this reduces to GB needing to beat ISR, but a 1-2 loss to Israel would be enough if POR to beat NED as well.

Reference: Fed Cup 2012 rulebook http://bit.ly/wSL8zS Appendix A part 11

Only GBR or ISR can win Pool C now but the NED v POR match is not a 'dead' match for those two teams because the outcome will affect which team ends up in a relegation playoff - with their two tie wins, GBR have already avoided that possibility for sure.

The winner of Pool C will play the winner of Pool A in Saturday's playoffs, which will in turn decide who gets into a World Group II playoff in April. (there are only 3 Fed Cup weekends in the calendar c.f. 4 for DC, so the Fed Cup World Group has two divisions of 8 teams each and winning the World Group II playoff tie gets you into the 2nd division of the World Group for the following year) Whoever wins the deciding doubles rubber in the AUT v BUL tie will win Pool A and Austria currently lead that rubber 6-1 5-2*.

Finally, NED have a Fed Cup ranking of 23, which makes yesterday's win GB's biggest Fed Cup rankings scalp for 6 years, since they beat Bulgaria (then ranked 19) 2-1 in Plovdiv in 2006. :)

Also, by beating Krajicek yesterday, Bally became only the 5th Brit ever to win 30 or more Fed Cup rubbers (singles and doubles combined)after Virginia Wade 66, Jo Durie 34, Clare Wood 34 and Sue Barker 31. :)

david1610
03-02-2012, 13:56
Portugal and the Netherlands have already started and Anne K's match just appeared on http://matchscorer.com/Live/fedcup.htm

Anne K. is playing Glushko. Quite a responsibility as this presumably means Bally gets the high ranked Peer, who may be out to prove something after being beaten yesterday.

I still would like a Portugal victory, just to ease fears! Mind you Anne K and Bally winning and then the girls rounding it off would be even better!
C'mon GB!

Oscar
03-02-2012, 14:11
Thanks Steven. I think that's clearer but I had to read it several times to work it out! Basically a win in all 3 ties would be the easy option, then at least we get a chance at promotion tomorrow and Sunday

Getting ahead of myself here - go GB!

Another break at 4-1. If Anne K. could keep her early momentum throughout most of her WTA matches, her ranking would really rise!

Now a question of keeping focus and keeping it going. Whisper away Judy!
C'mon GB!

PS Ned get break in second set to go 3-2 up, one set down in first match against POR

C'mon GB!!

Portugal 5-2 up in third set.

Must admit the chemistry looks so right compared to what I saw in Estoril two years ago, where nobody dared to say boo to a goose, Nigel Sears hovered over the girls reminiscent of the Israeli male coach just then. Much better body language to have a female coach companion sat alongside, having a quiet word where necessary.

Just pushing this back up to refer to...

if bally wins, do they still play dubs
And if Portugal win, for that matter.
BTW if screecher Brito wins her match (3-0 at the moment) maybe we should give her a bit more slack e.g. at Wimbledon next year, because if she wins, GB go through!
Bally holds 2-2. Tricky tricky but when she gets the first serve in, it certainly helps.
C'mon GB!

1-1 to be fair.
I think Anne's opponent was too error-strewn to be too much of a risk, and was very rattled on court, but Judy did her bit to keep Anne calm. I think there is a stronger argument for the first day. Even though the opponents were lower ranked, they were dangerous players as the last two days have shown!

3-3
Has Peer given up? Judy asking for clarification.
