Harrison was far better than I thought, you just didn't know what he was going to hit. Andy did well there though, deserves a lot of credit to win it in just 4, volleys awesome, everything else needs a bit of tinkering.

Nice words (as always) from Andy about Harrison.

david1610
17-01-2012, 06:48
Well with more conditioning to last another hour at least in those conditions, and top, top coaching, Harrison is definitely a top twenty player at the least!
Not Malisse in the next round, which might be a blessing. Ideally Andy needs a more comfortable second round to restore any energy lost today.
But, overall, well done for negotiating the first tricky opponent Andy!

Andy did well there though, deserves a lot of credit to win it in just 4, volleys awesome, everything else needs a bit of tinkering. the one thing i thaught he had missing was a tennis brain a young andy Murray thought his way round games Harrison just seemed to rely on the fact he has good weapons

Mmm... bit of a high risk strategy agreeing with Colin and Ross to keep him on court for as long as possible, but there you go....

Hello, everyone! Saw Andy win on telly, but unfortunately it's all about the Aussie players at the moment. Didn't even get to see the interview before they switched to an Aussie's match. Ah, well, hope to see much more of him... especially in the final!

Safely over the first hurdle with a win, Harrison a very talented player so I'm sure we will be seeing more of him in the future.

5live reckon Andy has bad sunburn on his neck so hopefully that will heal up as well as his other niggles (he seemed to have felt all his extremities during the match, according to the beeb!)

1 down, 6 to go!

Well done Andy for the win.  But he'll have to play an awful lot better to get through to the final.

But he's certainly working on keeping control of his frustrations on court - Well done, Andy!
Maybe when this is second nature, he'll turn his mind to controlling the body-part distractions!

lankster2003
17-01-2012, 07:49
In my opinion, only his volleys were on a par today but a win's a win so we move on to R2.

Luckily I slept in a little so only watched from 5-2 in the first set.

RFS

Got in to work and by the time I'd done the ritual logging in - I saw Supergran's post on FB about the win.

From what little I saw from around 5:30 to leaving at 6:20 with a shower in between - Andy looked maybe a little calmer on court although I did see a post just as I was getting ready to leave about naughty-word-ness... but hopefully he's channelling that tendency to dwell on bad points and maybe limiting it to just a little outburst here and there. Baby steps!

I spotted a tweet from Neil Harman as well about the clutching of body bits so agree that this is the next "tick" to knock off!!!

Glad he's won and will no doubt pick up on Twitter what went wrong for him in the first set (or was it that Ryan was just playing out of his skin?)

Meanwhile - back to the real world...

Alis

Harrison was playing well in the first set RFS but Andy wasn't - he dropped a service game on two double faults and an open court miss - handing the momentum to Harrison. He said in his on court interview that he was a little nervous at the beginning and it showed. Thankfully, he did get better as the match went on. Some of the commies have criticised Andy in the past for playing too well at the beginning of a GS and running out of steam by the semis - maybe he's doing it the other way round this time!

well done Andy - a tricky opener.
BBC report this morning said he was moving very gingerly - hope there's nothing too much to worry about. Haven't had time to read through the whole thread (read Sally's summary - great idea :thanks:)

Well done Andy! :yahoo: I woke up just as he'd lost the first set, quite glad I missed that set really! Really good match though, tough for a first round. Harrison played well, I think along with Tomic he's going to be a name to look out for over the next few years.

I really liked Andy's volleying today - he's so good at it and hope he'll bring this into his game more in the future.

Just read through the entire thread and then saw, near the end, that Sally had done a summary to save having to do that! Ah well, never mind, I enjoyed the reading. I'll watch the match later today on Eurosport Player - maybe I'd better leave it until after my appointment to have my blood pressure checked. . .

A few post match tweets

darren_cahill Darren Cahill

Good test for Murray as Ryan played a fine match. Muzza finished strongly & kept things together after the 1st set. Entertaining match.

stu_fraser Stuart Fraser

Job done in tough conditions. Good effort by Harrison but great response from Murray after losing 1st set as you would expect.

alex_willis Alexandra Willis

There we have it. A win for Andy Murray 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 over Ryan Harrison, who played a belter. Fab match. Edouard Roger-Vasselin next

NeilHarmanTimes Neil Harman

GSM Murray 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. An early kick in the pants, a few expletives, the odd grab at various parts of anatomy, saw it through. QED

There is a good article about the match on the ATP site:
http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2012-01-17/201201171326786565046.html
I chuckled at this:
"As a player, Lendl was not one for histrionics or emotion to the point that a raised eyebrow constituted a wild outpouring of the inner man."
Edit - sorry, just found this has been posted on the internet thread

I totally fell asleep during Andy's match. :shamed: Crawled to bed around 2 a.m. Hubby watched match with me and told me I missed some great points. He also commented that he hoped Lendl wouldn't suck the creativity out of Andy.

Got up to hear on the radio - 'what a disappointing start for Murray' I nearly collapsed until I realised he had only lost the first set !
So what's new - he often starts slow. Onwards and Upwards...he'll be fine :cheer:

A classic Murray match
Young gun thinks he will take Murray on and win and comes out all guns blazing
Murray's serve goes to pot
Murray doesnt play very well at first but waits for the storm to blow out
Murray starts to improve as young gun begins to fade
Murray wears young gun down
Murray wins

Bit worried in first set but at start of the second all that disappeared and I knew it was just a matter of time before Andy won.

Wish he would not swear and that he would get his hair cut as it makes him look less wild but otherwise it was an OK start. The day when Muzza wins his first match in a slam in 3 easy sets may be when we need to worry!
Definitely a match worth getting up at 3.30 for and good to see Harrison tested though he is def. a star of the future

harriet
17-01-2012, 17:22
enjoyable game, but i thought andy was often too passive, even aimless in his play. ryan played to win but andy , by contrast, played so that ryan would lose the point.

Alis
17-01-2012, 17:52
Andy has always said that you have to play different opponents in different ways - with some you have to be aggressive with others defensive - I'm sure Andy is better at assessing how to get the win than we are. It may not have been pretty but the win was what was important.

I have now managed to watch all the match - in several sessions, throughout the day! I have to say, the A-N-D-Y boys were great. :flowers: At times they got as much applause as the players :)

I got up at quarter to 4 and was worried by what I was seeing! Gradually relaxed as I realised Andy was getting it together. Left for work at 7 and have done a 10 hour day!! Last day tomorrow then I have some time off so will be able to go back to bed after the next match if it's another day match (ie our night). Well worth the slightly jet lagged feeling I have now, just to see our boy win his first match

Actually if the night matches are rationed, at the risk of tempting fate and one match at a time, I would forego it next time and, if Andy gets through, ask for one round 3. The second round match should, touch wood, be much easier than the first round - Roger-Vasselin is definitely a challengers circuit player who plays the large draw ATP events or sometimes qualifies for them. His lifetime (7 years?) ATP matches are not equivalent to a typical Andy year (and certainly not the results - his best victory last year - without going back and looking - was against an opponent ranked 48, and the second had a ranking of about 64).
