Did you see the banner the other night and I quote: IF TENNIS IS A RELIGION THEN FEDERER IS IT'S GOD. Would that they had checked correct use of apostrophes before displaying it large world-wide!!:big grin::dunce::dunce:

Love it SG - shows just how literate Fed fans are!

That doesn't tell you if 1st place in Group A play against 2nd place in Group B, etc. That used be there but it not. So I am not sure. Best leave FTM threads until tomorrow when I am 100% sure.

Yes, it does, unless I am misunderstanding your post. The very first paragraph, second sentence: "In the semi-finals the winner of Group A plays the runner-up of Group B and the winner of Group B plays the runner-up of Group A."

Most likely Ferrer vs Tsonga , Federer vs Berdych/Djokovic. The only way Ferrer doesn't win the group , it is if Tipsaveric and Berdych win today. In that case Berdych vs Tsonga , Federer vs Ferrer

Think Tsonga only one who can stop Fed now, though don't really expect it to happen. Don't think Ferrer will have gained much confidence from the 3rd with Berdy-really did become a bit of an anti climax though of course the Czech had some fanatical supporters! Pity none of the top 3 made the knock out stages. Of course it's so sad for Andy buy he'll be looking to the future and Nole was certainly jaded and Rafa not at his best. The WTF two weeks earlier next year and hopefully this will make a difference to some of the performances.

I thought it was Daveed playing Fed first today - have I got that wrong? Whichever way it is, the cards have always been stacked in Fed's favour - a day off before the semis and an afternoon match so that he has time to recover before the final. Should we be surprised? It was ever thus - whatever tournament it is (think about the USOpen) - the schedule always seems to benefit the 'grand old man'!

I can't help but feel that this weekend is a bit of an anti-climax without 3 of the top 4 players. It just emphasises that there must be something far wrong with the ATP schedule if the top players have nothing left for such a prestigious event at the end of the season.

Daveed and Jo for the final!!! :cheer::cheer::cheer:

Madeline
26-11-2011, 11:01
Yes, it's Ferrer v Fed. And Ferrer will have had no rest, playing until about 10.30 last night, whereas Fed's last match was Thursday afternoon - he sure seems to get all the luck. With the H2H standing at Fed 11 Ferru 0, I'm afraid Andy's #3 is out of the window. Never mind, Andy, you'll get it back next year!

You said it! This year's WTF greatly affected by the scheduling and even more so when you consider Federer got the exemption to miss Shanghai due to length on tour.
Looking at Ferrer last night and thinking of his SF today I was reminded of Andy's SF after beating Roger in the 3 RR and his telling his team he had nothing left in the tank during the SF a couple of years go. I doubt even Daveed will have much left today.

Let's not get too negative, though. If Andy has to go back to number 4, so be it. It does not make any difference to the AO draw. It will be due to a minor (hopefully) injury and the last part of the season augurs well for the next. Nole may have a biggr job recovering from this season than even he realises, Rafa is in serious need of some confidence and may be at a key turning point in his career, and Roger does not have the serial consistency of old, and a fit raring-to-go-in-2012 Andy should give us all grounds for confidence!

The schedule has already been changed for next year. It will be 2 weeks shorter, which will certainly help. The YEM takes place on about 6 November next year.

Having said that, the schedule might not necessarily have been wrong on it's own. It has simply had to adjust to the fact that tennis matches are much more physical than they were even just 15 years ago. Rallies are more strenuous, and often longer. Check old videos of tennis matches and players were never towelling themselves down throughout the match.

I have every sympathy for the top 4 players. By being so bloomin' good (!) - and this is the first year that all of the Masters 1000 shields were won by the top 4 alone - they are the ones that play by far the most. They have to be the most careful about overexerting themselves. And everyone wants them to play in their tournaments - they are the marquee names.

Probably whistling in the wind, but could we PLEASE have a Federer free day tomorrow? Unless of course he loses!

The schedule might finish earlier next year, but it's just been crammed into a shorter time. They have to play just as many tournaments - plus the Olympics as well!

Alis
26-11-2011, 16:15
Although the commentators have been eulogising about Ferderer's resurgence, if you analyse his matches he hasn't actually played that well. He only narrowly beat Tsonga and that was really because Jo let him off the hook. Nadal is a totally lacking energy, confidence and motivation at the moment so made His Majesty look better than he actually is and Fish took a set off him. Today Ferrer just had nothing left in the tank after last night's match. Last year Fed won Basel and the WTF and all the pundits were saying he would win another major in 2011 - he didn't. Once the other top players have had time to recover we will be better placed to decide whether or not His Highness is truly having a renaissance - I, for one, think and hope he is not!

Well, the players negotiated this change - with the clear advantage of more rest time in the close season - as well as them not having to be on tour duty for so long in the year. All but the top 8-10 will be finished in October now.

The rest is now up to the players and their teams to schedule carefully - especially with the Olympics happening, as you mentioned.

I wonder if, perchance, the 'luck' by which old Rog has maintained such good health is in any way related to the 'luck' of receiving tournament timetables which somehow always seem to allow reasonable rest and recuperation between rounds? Or maybe I'm just being churlish...

Good to see Tsonga come through in straights and some fab points and while another three setter would have been entertaining, he really needed to win as efficiently as possible to havew a shot against Fed. The first semi went much as I expected and given the record Ferrer was likely to struggle having finished late last night, however he did at least put up a decent show in the first. Pity both the Bryans and the Indian Express were derailed in the semis but a great contest with Frystenberg/Matkowski though unfortnately likely to be their last chance. I would like to see Danny and Max take it now.

You know one of the many reasons I am so looking forward to Andy winning his first GS is that at a stroke (or two :) ) I am convinced the number of anti-Fed comments will disappear as we will simply see him in "his" light and Andy finally as a GS champion in his own right. It is all about Andy and when he wins one of these things, Fed's comments and our comments on Fed will take on such lesser importance!

I think some respect needs to be shown to Daniel Nestor. He has won this trophy four times with three partners now: 2007 with Mark Knowles, 2008 and 2010 with Nenad Zim. and now with Max Mirnyi. Max won it win 2006 with Jonas Bjorkman as well. And he's won all the Masters and all the Grand Slams plus the Olympic Gold medal. The only think missing from his CV is the Davis Cup.

To give credit where it's due Fed was the best player this week but disappointed Tsonga just couldn't quite keep the pressure on in the crunch moments, thougfh Roger did step it up. of course some of the snide remarks Fed makes don't make some of us warm towards him, even though I liked him in the early days. Still think Federer was beatable today, though of course Andy never had a chance to take him on. OTT discussion in my view in studio about whether RF can get back to no1 . Murray not even mentioned today, but sure he'll gert people talking about him again!

The last player over 30 to finish the season in the top 5 was Agassi in 2003 (ranked 3, aged 33) - I think..!

IIRC Agassi dragged himself back up the rankings having dropped out of the top 100.
He resorted to playing in Challengers to pick up points and get his game, and love of it, back on track and justly earned his place back at the top thereby proving it your career isn't over when the pundits say it is.

Yeah I remember that then he went on main tour and reach final of US Open and Roger beat him there. He was on painkillers at time.

yes that's right, it was a great effort though Agassi's career could be a bit of a rollercoaster. Of course many had written Sampras off before he won the Us Open in 2002, though it turned out to be the last time he played on the main tour so I still wouldn't underestimate Fed though you can't read too much into the WTF either.
