Love Sherlock. Love BC - and the dude who plays Watson. Never heard of Scandal so will look out for that.
Always had a soft spot for David Tennant. Not really a Dr Who fan tbh. Stopped watching when the aforementioned DT left.
Never watched Sherlock but they were filming it outside work again this week - Dominic Cummerbatch (or whatever his name is) alert!!!
Work  ;)
I shall be watching the live announcement on Sunday of the new Doctor, never fully got into Matt Smith so I shall be interested in what way they go with this one, im betting on an older actor in their 40s.
There is a lot of speculation for who will be the new Dr Who

I am 99% certain it wont be any of the names mentioned haha
Also watching Scandal on More4 on Thursdays. Very intriguing, US political type drama - sort of West Wing meets Homeland. I missed the first season, but its been easy enough to pick up. Still trying to work out who the good guys are, but its good because just as you think you've worked out who is playing who, there's another twist. I must try to find the first season on dvd, or see if its still available on the C4 website.
I tried to track down the first series but wasn't successful on catch up of any sort or on demand, so haven't bothered with series 2 but thought it looked good.
Work  ;)
I don't like the look of the new Dr Who (although I've never seen him in anything else) - it was supposed to be the case that each incarnation should be younger than the last, but this one is as old as the original one! (And nobody else will be as good in the part as Peter Davison was.)

I love Peter Capaldi - and he's Scottish! My fave Dr is Tom Baker.

I think Sylvester McCoy was almost certainly older than Peter Davison or Colin Baker.........and he came after them.
The pic of Peter doesn't really look like him with the beard and greying hair. He's been in loads of things including comedy - most recently the Thick of It. Interesting and very different choice I'd say.

If each incarnation got younger they would be ridiculously young soon! They dont stick to the rules in the programme if they did the next doctor would be the last as he can only apparently regenerate twelve times, something im sure they will get round.
Although I thought the revealing of the new Doc was a bit naff (stars in your eyes anyone?!) I am very excited about the choice he is a fantastic actor of stage and screen and I am glad he is older then there wont be any romance nonsense that keeps creeping in. I just pray that Moffet ups his writing on this series as the last couple were poor. Maybe time to get some new writers in I reckon.
I am looking forward to seeing what he does with it and whether he will stay Scottish I hope so!
The BBC have so little to talk up nowadays that they always go completely over the score when they do finally have something.

I really like Peter Capaldi and my favourites were John Pertwee and Tom Baker who actually visited a book store in St.Helens many years ago to sign copies of a Dr Who book. I took my children and he was really lovely with them. I am watching the Third Test from Old Trafford today...Rain stopped play.
Must confess the writing since Russell T Davies left Dr Who has left me and Mr P cold - too complex and fanciful. Just give us some good old scary monsters and an understandable plot.

I've always been a big Dr Who fan and whilst the modern version is obviously a bit different still think the show has still kept true to itself. Mind in the "old days" there were 26 episodes per series but it was a 25 minute show and each story had several parts with a cliffhanger in between. Anyway on to the present and I enjoy the current set up but as always some shows stand out more than others. I think every Dr has made their mark even if some have been more successful than others and whilst I think Matt Smith was great in the role along with David Tennant we needed a bit of a contrast this time and I think Peter Cappaldi being a fine actor and avid fan will do well in the role. My favourite from the 70's/80's was always Tom Baker closely followed by John Pertwee and Peter Davidson.Christopher Eccleston was obviously instrumental in relaunching the show and certainly made an impact but unfortunately didn't stay long enough to be right up there.

I liked John Pertwee too. I found Dr Who very scary when he was the doctor altho' perhaps that was coz I was very wee then. The Daleks scared the you-know-what out of me.

Just finished Top of the Lake. Glad to see the good triumphed over evil in the end. Altho' I'm a bit incredulous at the 12-yr-old girl giving birth all by herself and she and the baby were both unscathed. Am now halfway through Broadchurch, which I'm enjoying a lot.
Yesterday I saw that a potentially good programme had started on Monday - Under The Dome. So I watched it on the Channel 5 catchup and it seemed quite interesting. I will have to watch tomorrow's next weekend as I shall be away.

Same here. I hope the two detectives stay the same. It'll be interesting to see how Ellie copes with her life and work now that her hubby is in prison. And with Top of the Lake, I guessed it was the cop coz he seemed to nice to be true.
I certainly didn't guess the culprit in Broadchurch. But the cop in Top of the Lake....nice???.........he was horrid all the way through. A complete misogynist and male chauvinist pig IMHO. Came as no surprise to me.

He tried very hard not to come across as chauvinist and the misogynist otherwise there's no way she'd have even gotten a look in on the case. I thought the writer was quite clever with his character actually. We all found him off kilter and smarmy but he wasn't as transparently horrible like most of the other men portrayed.
I had the impression she was there under sufferance and he had no choice but maybe I got the wrong end of the stick.
Have found Under the Dome. Looks good but annoyingly Demand 5 only goes back 7 days. Fortunately there's USA 5 (or some such) where the first episode is yet to air - next Tuesday. So I've downloaded the second episode which was on on Monday and set the series to record after that.

I'm afraid I iron everything except towels and socks. I used to hate it when I was working and had a family to look after because it was so time consuming - now I'm retired I quite enjoy it. I just don't know how some of you get away with not ironing at all!

I can't understand why anyone would want to spend time ironing when there are so many other things to do that are either more important or more enjoyable!
Well that is of course a personal view. I'm sure we all have varying thoughts on what is/isn't important or enjoyable. I get a certain satisfaction from ironing - I like to see crisp smooth shirts and would be mortified to see Mr P go out in a crumpled one. On the other hand he blissfully opens the bonnet on the car and I am immediately overcome by the need to doze off!

I like ironing once I get started. Husbands shirts look much better as does bedding. I iron most things and do not consider it a waste of time as I think it's important.
This thread about ironing has had me laughing. I am of the "don't iron unless absolutely essential" brigade. I iron occasionally - cotton shirts, pillowcases(not duvet covers or sheets though), the odd top or pair of trouser. One of my sisters on the other hand, irons everything in sight - clothes, underwear, bedding, towels and even socks. I don't get it. She finds it astonishing that I am so slovenly "that's not how mum taught us" (she's right, our mum was another of life's ironers). I find its the thought of it that I don't like - once the ironing board is up, I do get a sort of pleasure watching crumpled things become lovely and smooth. And I like the smell of something that's just been ironed. However, its not a daily nor even weekly occurrence! Big sis has ironing day on a Friday. Each to their own.......
My mum also ironed everything and even ironed for other people - she really enjoyed it. I certainly don't iron everything but modern fabrics are much more forgiving. Luckily hubby and I both wear a uniform for work neither of which need ironing. I do have several items of linen clothing though which of course have to be ironed. I usually put it off until it builds up to a massive pile which takes me ages but I do actually enjoy it once I get going. I ironed through the whole of the royal wedding a couple of years back!
Err - how did the TV thread turn into an ironing thread??

Probably because watching something on TV helps when ironing. Yesterday afternoon while SG was having a nap and son and daughter-in-law relaxing in the lounge I ironed for nearly two hours watching "That's My Boy". Adam Sandler film. Quite outrageous, but kept me amused as I ploughed through shirts, tops and tablecloths.:big grin:

So glad grand designs is back! Got to watch it tonight while KevD is away. I'd live in a tree house like that any day :)
Strictly's back and I enjoyed watching it yesterday and Friday, especially Judge Rinder's dancing.
It seems like a good line-up on Strictly this season - there seem to be a few celebs with real potential. I didn't much like Judge Rinder or his partner though - they put together a good routine but I thought they were both horribly pompous. We have been watching containment. It's one we can agree on unlike the last ship on sky which KevD loves and I did enjoy at first for this series but then it began to annoy me again. Really didn't think it was going to go the way it did in the latest episode though :( between the strain, the walking dead and containment my Tv seems to be full of death and disease at the moment. That's why I look forward to grand designs to lighten things up.

I didn't know this. The focus on the romantic relationship bugged me a little, I could see why it was there but would prefer more explanation on what was going on than a love story. I wish I would have known it wasn't renewed, I hate starting something that goes nowhere. Though after my experience with lost I'm not big a fan of something that goes on forever either. National Treasure ? For me. watching any continuing drama, no matter how many episodes, I have to engage, sympathise, or relate to a character. Some-one on who's side I can be on. When I eventually sit down at 9 pm have been watching National Treasure, Paranoid, DCI Banks, Cold Feet, Victoria and Poldark. Interruptions do mean I have to pause and/or record which is not ideal.. Where there's a clash just record one which can mean a late night.
The Fall. He's gorgeous, he's creepy, he's gorgeous, he's creepy...so conflicted
Aren't we all lol. Haven't seen the new episode yet though, recording clashed with some rubbish Kev d was recording hahah. Have to get it off the player, but already looking forward to watching it later.

Cant believe anyone still watches that garbage
About the only thing family will still watch all together or I might agree with you
I watched Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, on Pointless, try to name a British singles player who played at last year's Wimbledon. I got one of the Pointless answers, which was Kyle Edmund. They couldn't get Jo Konta until Richard Osman asked them to name one.

Ooh I had forgotten about that. Something to watch while KevD is away. Has anyone seen westworld? Only 2 episodes in but I'm hooked. Hopkins is fantastic as ever :)
Gave up part way through the first episode of Westworld. Didn't live up to its hype for us.
Enjoying Paranoid and The Level.
I've been watching The Victorian Slum. Monday's episode was poignant for me, as Michael Mosley talked about the workhouse. I know some of my relatives went into the workhouse during the Victorian times.
There has been a lot of good TV lately .... my planner is filling up at the rate of knots!
Did anyone watch 'National Treasure' with Robbie Coltrane. I thought that was really good. I still have 'One of Us' to watch plus 'The Missing', 'Poldark' and 'The Fall' - haven't started any of them! Sings that I really don't have time for all this TV I guess .... and then there's tennis!
"Humans" is back this Sunday. Excellent, the first series was 4's most watched drama for 20 years.

You do really.
I have been catching up with recordings on my Sky box and am currently enjoying Angelby, the Swedish series on ITV Encore on Wednesday nights. It is great that other channels besides BBC4 are showing foriegn programs.
I've be watching Containment , but it has failed to grip me, will probably see the season out but it's no surprise that it wasn't renewed for a second season.
It started to annoy me by the end tbh so I'm not bothered that there's no 2nd series.
National Treasure ? For me. watching any continuing drama, no matter how many episodes, I have to engage, sympathise, or relate to a character. Some-one on who's side I can be on. The acting's excellent, the filming certainly sets the scene, but it's rather s l o w. I'm not exactly enjoying it, even though it's very worth watching. If that makes sense.
I thought it was really good, clever TV - how he convinced the jury and the TV audience that he was innocent.
Has anyone been watching 'Westworld'? Other half has downloaded the first few episodes and we watched the first one last night. Looks like it might be ok. Hubby says it was a TV series years and years ago but I don't remember it .... I'm clearly too young ;)
I don't remember a TV series, but I certainly remember the movie with Yul Brynner.

I'm also "enjoying" The Missing, but it's not getting any clearer! The ending to this week's episode - oh my goodness. I hope its not going to have a disappointing ending like the first series. Hate it when I invest many hours in a drama that grips me only to be let down by the way they end it.
Really enjoyed Ed Balls doing his Gangnam Style salsa on last weekend's Strictly.

Yep, the ending of the first series was disappointing and to be honest, the whole of it was less than memorable. But the second series was a work of art and justified the license fee alone. And they nailed the ending too. A remarkable piece of television, brilliantly acted by all and has created quite a cult hero in Julien Baptiste.
Definitely didn’t disappoint. Writers were on BBC Breakfast this morning and said they'd taken on board viewers' comments about the end of the last series.

Well, for me last night's episode didn't disappoint, but the real shock factor of the second series came a couple of weeks ago when the perpetrator, and the extent of his psychopathy, was revealed. After that it was about bringing the strands together, which was done well over the last couple of weeks, and the sadness (rather than shock) of the final episode was predictable - it was inevitable that 'woodland' scenario was never going to end well.
If anything though, in terms of a grand finale, the first series was better insofar as the true shocks coupled to the father's complete disintegration occurred climatically right at the end. Honestly don't know where folks are coming from who say the first ending was weak. It wasn't neat, which is different, but it was strong imo.
Incredible series and can't wait for its return.

Josephine
01-12-2016, 16:11
Yes was a good series and finale, though rather a horrible subject.
I agree the ending of the last season wasn't weak. Just people didn't seem to understand it and thought the little boy was maybe still alive when he clearly wasn't. It was just the father had been driven mad by his obsessive quest to try to find his son.

Certainly found "The Missing" to be a gripping and didn't disappoint as events unfolded. Tbh dramas do need to cover difficult subject matters though there are different ways of tackling them. I didn't see any of the first series though.
