I've always rated Jimmy McGovern's stuff. No idea when I'll have time to watch though with all the tennis now and over the coming weeks!

Watched first episode on Catch-Up, now hooked. Agree, gritty and draining. Such sad people living difficult lives facing so many heartbreaking problems. The First Communion scenes reminded me of my childhood. Today it is rather like a competition with the girl's dresses and some of them look like brides. Love JMc dramas.

Yeah I always hate the Christmas wait! Yes I am always annoyed when the Doctor doesn't save someone and I don't like how they keep doing this! Did it ever happen in the olden days?! The first one I think it happened with was David Tennant and Madame Pompadour? It's just not right.......

Chris my first doctor (9th) and I don't think too many die and my favourite David Tennant (10th) probably same. Matt Smith (11th) most kids friendly doctor who so far and most people are fine.

This doctor different. Not sure how but he not like other 3 with saving people thing.

I'be been really enjoying the Handmaid's Tale, the lead actress (Elizabeth Moss) is magnificent. If you've read the book, there are some differences but it's very well done. It's hard to say it's enjoyable because it is such a bleak story and lots of very difficult to watch scenes, but definitely worth it.

Westworld will be returning for a second season, the filming will begin in October. Series two will be 10 episodes. There isn't any word yet on any casting changes but they are exepecting to wrap in April and get it on to our screens in 2018. My guess would be for the autumn schedule.

If you like Elizabeth Moss then the second series of Top Of The Lake starts soon on the BBC (first series was brilliant).

Game of Thrones first episode ruined for me by that Sheeran scene, what was that all about? Cheesy cameos is not what G of T is about.

I finished The Loch but it turned into a complete joke of a series - typical ITV Drama really. It was hard to take anything seriously by the end, you could drive a bus through half the gaping plot holes.

Well when I watch All 4 or ITV hub they definitely have adverts. I used to download to sky box and you're right there were no adverts but I don't have sky any more .... will probably join again at some point. They keep offering me to come back for half price for a year but won't include a skyQ box which previous offers for new customers have included. I'm holding out ....

It's been confirmed that there will be two more series of Line of Duty :yahoo:

Ep. 2 of Top of the Lake: China Girl is on tonight. The Times gave the first episode 5 stars. I was quite surprised because it's very rare for TT to give anything 5 stars, and I wasn't blown away - to be honest think I preferred the preceding programme, '10 Puppies and Us' (although wanted to throttle Lola's daffy owner).

Haha! Great minds think alike. Steve and I said exactly the same about Lola's owner. Loved the programme though. The couple with the rescue dog were great. Really made me laugh when he was trying to secure the garden .... been there, done that! Also when they moved the crate into the bedroom at night .... been there too. That dog will never sleep anywhere else now! Ours upgraded to our bed once the crate went, and that is where they have stayed!

Love Montalbano and as we went last year to SW Sicily where it is filmed, this episode we kept saying - that's Punta Secca, Modica, Ragusa, Scicli - we recognised a lot, particularly where he keeps driving (the wrong way!) up a one way street and jumps out and up the steps into the 'Polizia' (really the town hall or something at Scicli). I love it too Jerry .... Steve and I are obsessed with property programmes, especially building ones. We said the same thing about the utilities and the steepness of the site. It's a lovely area and not too far from us really.

On another note, my humax box is jam packed with things to watch. Have recorded the 2 dramas by the Missing writers and have started watching series 2 of Doctor Foster .... does anyone else feel like telling her she needs to get a blinking grip?!:laugh: I'm not sure I can maintain the sympathy I had for her in the first series ...

Oh totally agree about Dr Foster - want to shake her, being outwitted at every turn and playing into his evil hands! Only sticking with it because the wedding ring scene at the end of episode 1 suggests she'll come good in the end. Testing my patience in the meantime, though as my mum said when I moaned about it to her, it wouldn't be much of a drama if Dr F calmly took the moral high ground :big grin:

Yeah, that's the theory all over social media, but hope it doesn't go that way - would be such a cop out. The 'he said, she said' is a fundamental and onerous crux of so many real life cases that police, juries etc have to tackle. I'd expect more from the Williams brothers than to sidestep it with a convenient 3rd party involvement.

So jealous! It's a plan of ours too. Although an eventual one, still probably 20 years away. Mainly because our chosen location doesn't have the same level of employment opportunities. Maybe with travel, we will get there anyway, eventually. If Scotland will have us :)

Oh it's far from definite Jerry, it's just a dream and will likely never happen! If you do it in 20 years you'll be about the age we are now so that would be good going .... we will be retired if it ever happens but on the upside, we would have more time to devote to it. When we had our current house extended and completely renovated everyone was saying "oh what a nightmare" etc. It was hard at times but we learnt loads and would 100% do it again in a heartbeat. people think we're nuts ... maybe just a little :laugh:

I'm so sad I meant jealous that you went to the show :) finally saw last nights grand designs. What a incredible build on such a budget. The prevut frames certainly make it more affordable although Kev says it's like an IKEA built house. I often see in grand designs people cancelling decorates etc to save money, but I think we'd actually want to do those things ourselves. Put our own stamp on. Maybe not spend months painting wooden tiles though, don't think I could have that level of patience!

Did Dr F ever have the plot? All through the first series her supposed best friend kept on going behind her back. Within 20 mins of the first episode here she's done it again, yet she continues to be best friends??? I haven't watched second episode yet, I'd rather not watch anymore, dreadful stuff.

I watched a show yesterday about a child who killed his mother. And I am still annoyed by it. It certainly felt as if they were blaming the mother. Maybe she could have done more or seen the 'warning signs' It made out as if there was something more they could have done, as if they were to blame. Firstly seeing the warning signs and telling people doesn't mean anything, no help is given, just a pat on the head and an on your way. They could have told camhs, social workers, teachers the GP, it doesn't change a thing, nog in my experience. Secondly there is no proof they did anything but love that child. And the woman has lost her life. The presenter really annoyed me in her treatment of the step father. Suggesting that maybe they shouldn't have allowed the child to isolate himself. But what were they meant to do, be violently attacked to try and force the child to eat at the table? When a kid 14 and acting in that way how can you stop it? How can you force it to join in with you if it doesn't want to?

The mother was brutally killed in a premedated murder by her son. He waited for her partner to be away. Why because she was the adult do they look to blame her? It made me so mad I couldn't watch it to the end. And even now, the next day something reminded me of it and I'm still angry. The mother was told the child didn't have any mental health problems. It's society that let that mother down, all the agencies that were meant to help her. To suggest after her death that she "missed the boy's cries for help" is shocking, disgusting and unacceptable. To suggest that she'd still be alive if she hadn't missed them. It defies belief. I won't be watching anything presented by that woman again. Jo frost! Just awful.

Think he lost his way after the death of his partner and the loss of the court case, and his music fell out of favour. Having recently seen a GM tribute show ('Fastlove' recommend anyone to go as it features his Wham days and solo music in equal measure, plus the singer isn't trying to impersonate George, plus all the music is live as 'George' has a full backing band, PLUS my niece is one of the backing dancers !), I found I appreciated the music even more.

I could never understand why they left us hanging in mid air, making us wait for the rest of it and consequently losing its impact! The reason O'Sullivan will never win SPOTY, apart from the fact he's a ****.

Translation- I would love to be nominated, and would love to win.

No this is Ronnie, the exact translation is what he says. If he wanted to go he'd have been asking the BBC by now what he's got to do to be nominated.......which is a fair question given how his predecessors have all been nominated. Having a father in jail for murder may not help. But then again, at least his sport is not tainted by drug use unlike two of the top 3 contenders (and Froome maybe lucky to survive till the vote).

Great final & delighted that Joe Mcfadden won.
His dances were inventive & his partner was excellent choreographer:jitterbug:

After Strictly, I watched Feud: Bette and Joan. Very good acting from Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford, Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and Alfred Molina as Robert Aldrich. I hardly recognised Catherine Zeta Jones as Olivia de Havilland.

Debbie was a lovely dancer, but was a ballerina-went to the Royal ballet school at 16
was a ballet dancer & had a ballet school, so had an unfair advantage. I don't think ex professionals should be contestants

Doing ballet so many years ago doesn't mean she can do ballroom and latin. I thought she was great, though I think it was a mistake to do ballet in the showdance as obviously that could be seen as an advantage.

But I rather like the fact that she and Giovanni did what they wanted to express their relationship rather than an obvious crowd pleaser such as No Business like Show business - or fancy costume tricks like Joe and Katya. Did like Joe too, though guess what, he has done a small bit of dancing before in musicals.

I thought Gemma was the only one of the finalists who genuinely had no previous dance training or experience and she did amazingly well but had little chance of winning against more experienced performers.

18-12-2017, 13:25
Unlike previous years I genuinely had no idea who would win. With hindsight, both Alexandra & Debbie have had their detractors, whereas Joe didn't give people any reason not to like him. I agree that Gemma made the most progress, but I think her dancing skills are limited compared to the other three so that's why she didn't win.
I was surprised that Craig seemed in 'happy' mood and even dusted off his '10' paddle on a couple of occasions.

Am watching second series of The Crown on Netflix. I have signed for the month for free and last year had a voucher for a free month. I'm not sure how many free months I'm going to be able to get but so far so good. I absolutely love The Crown and would thoroughly recommend the Netflix freebie.

I've just binge-watched both series of The Crown on Netflix. Absolutely love it! I broadly knew about key moments of the Queen's reign, but it has been fascinating to learn about the intricacies of the the post-war Churchill ego, Suez Crisis, the GC Peter Townsend matter, minimising Soviet influence in the Commonwealth, Profumo etc. So much wisdom and composure in impossible situations, and from such a young age. I've always been broadly in favour of the Queen, but watching this series has brought home to me just how lucky we are to have her.

We kept missing peaky blinders, but after Kev got a fire7 for crimbo we downloaded the first season, to watch on our New Years holiday - camping in the snow in the Cairngorms. We watched a few episodes while away and more when we got home. Somehow we've ended up into season four now. There are parts that are frustrating beyond belief but I am enjoying it.

Just watched the part one and two of the new season of silent witness. We enjoyed it :) looking forward to next week's episodes. It's on Monday and Tuesday but I had to wait for KevD to be home. On the bright side it meant we got to watch part 1 and 2 back to back

Just got into Peaky Blinders really and now watched all 4 series on Iplayer-impressed-it is quite violent mind you. Previously was going to watch 4th series but better seeing from start-don't think it'll be on Iplayer much longer but may be available from other sources. Seems 5th series is the last but will be aired 2019 (real gang had different timeline-activities were over by 1910) I've also been intrigued by Silent Witness throughout the years (even if at times can be a bit far fetched) Did watch Kiri though realised I'd recorded the SD instead of HD channel so downloaded from on Demand. Like a lot of stuff Sarah Lancashire in,whilst sad plot thought not as bleak as might've been portrayed. Seen some criticisms but won't detail here in case some interested mot viewed. I recently got a UHD set (though one of the cheaper options) even if only certain shows in that format(mostly downloads from Sky and streaming from other services) but other material is upscaled. Some of the things I've enjoyed via Sky lately have been The Tunnel ,Riveria and Sick Note and The Blacklist. I'm enjoying McMafia starring James Norton on BBC1. Blue Planet II was available in UHD HLG (type of HDR) after series ended .

Just catching up with Spanish drama I Know Who You Are. Riveting.
James.....Spiral is brilliant but there are 5 previous series and it helps to understand the characters if you've watched them before the current series.
There's another Swedish thriller starting on Tuesday on Channel 4.......Before We Die. Will give it a go. Scandi dramas tend to be very well done.

I watched Miriam's Big American Adventure, last night. I found all the episodes to be very interesting. But, didn't agree with the man that got interviewed while Miriam had to sit in her car because he'd got a hatred of Jewish women. My great-great grandfather was Jewish. He, his siblings and parents came to this country around about the beginning of World War One from what we now know to be Austria. As I'm a descendant, would he dislike me?

:barmy: I watched Pointless this evening. A question was : name a GB gold medal winner from Rio 2016. One man couldn't think of anyone but guessed at Andy Murray. He did ok as only 21 / 100 of the sample had named Andy. Another quizzer answered Mo Mowlam. No joke. I think I inhabit another universe.

We could have a whole separate thread for idiotic replies in quizzes! I recall a contestant once saying that East Anglia was in Holland . . . I don't know whether the contestants are deliberately chosen as people likely to make silly mistakes, or whether it's just brain freeze due to nerves.

I wonder in both instances too. There was once a quiz when contestants had heart rate monitored and it had to be brought down to a certain level or something of that sort. Their heart rates were indeed racing.

Oh yeah, I remember that. It was called The Chair. Contestants were given 'heartstopper' moments, chances to stabilize then they had to watch their heart rate on a screen and it had to be under a certain level when the gong went. I used to quite enjoy it but it can't have been too popular as it didn't air for long.

We are really enjoying McMafia, a couple of episodes behind. I am especially enjoying James Norton

Next of Kin is really good as well. I haven't watched any of the Scandi dramas or anything with subtitles ... I can't abide subtitles. I can never read then quickly enough as the print is often too small and I end up either missing half of it or concentrating too much on the subtitles and not enough on the pictures! Just not for me.
