Missed the second set - at least Laura looks to have made more of a match of it.
Hope she can get her wrist properly better.

Helen40

I didn't get any real sense of how much the wrist was a factor, can any shed any light on it?

I didn't get any real sense of how much the wrist was a factor, can any shed any light on it?

Hard to tell and I doubt she will enlighten us in the presser. I think Li Na was more prepared this time and Laura had much more to lose than a year ago which possibly made her more nervous?

david1610
30-08-2013, 17:08
Oh well, not to be today though all these matches build up experience I suppose ...

Jan
30-08-2013, 17:10
I did see some of the match, and Laura appeared to make quite a lot of BH errors - possibly down to the wrist??

JAMES4578
30-08-2013, 18:12
Thought it would be tough ask with the preparation and pity Laura started slowly and couldn't quite capitalise on her lead early in the 2nd. However, credit for for the fightback and in the circumstances Laura can take the positives from the week and build on it. Just hope the wrist will be ok in due course.

30-08-2013, 19:46
Sad for Laura but she didn't seem to have much energy in this. Li Na did play well and was obviously pleased that she had managed to avenge last years defeat.

david1610
30-08-2013, 23:43
It is a sign of how far Laura has already come that she makes a third round, justifying her seeding, and it already seems almost routine.
Not quite enough in the tank to beat one of the world's best players today. But there will be other days!

patmoren
31-08-2013, 07:43
Laura was making more forehand errors than backhand, sending lots of them long so probably more of a tension thing than injury.

Think the wind was a factor too.

david1610
31-08-2013, 22:20
Saw Laura's BBC interview and interesting that she was not happy with her performance and basically does not want to be as "lowly" ranked as 30 for much longer and that she also said how many things there are she can improve upon. Positive reaction all round in terms of moving forward.

david1610
17-09-2013, 16:13
Life moves on ... Laura playing in Guangzhou and seeded 3 where she won her first round against Jaksic a qualifier, Plays S. Zheng next, a WC, match after 6:00 p.m. local time (Joahanna Konta's match). Seven hours ahead. So 6:00 p.m. is presumably 11:00 a.m. so Laura on about 13:00 tomorrow.

PS This is the tournament where Laura was beaten in the final last year 6-4 in the third, so defending 200 points..

david1610
18-09-2013, 17:30
Laura won 6-3 7-6 into QF as is, for the first time Johanna Konta!

Helen40
18-09-2013, 22:54
Not the greatest finish for Laura today, but got the W which I guess is what counts. It's so nice to see we have two Brits in the QF, both with potentially winable matches. Good luck both!

She only seems to do well in the GS's, when another Brit is doing well or when she's just lost/gotten another coach. I'm hoping that now the other teenagers (worldwide) are passing her, it'll help her mentally.

Mmm... I will still give her until next year before starting to judge her more critically. Still think she is putting the extra bits of her game together (second serve solidity, movement, choice of stroke in terms of attach v. defence.
I also would like more consistency but there does seem to be a lot more inconsistency on the WTA than the ATP and I would rather she was good in the Slams than the other way round. It certainly helps the rankings and I am STILL glad she is not ranked as high as, say, Sloane Stephens - it would be too much too soon.

david1610

Laura won her first round match in the China Open 7-6 4-6 6-1 in two hours and 11 minutes. The stats suggest a tough first set (she saved four break points).
Only three doubles the whole match and two in the first. Seems like she broke her down in the end.
Beat Klara Zakopalova, ranked 33 who was ranked 20 in April. Seems to be a very good result for Laura.
Players a top ten player, Kerber, next.

JAMES4578
29-09-2013, 13:03
A tough one but Laura was decisive in the decider against a quality oppponent, well done! Kerber definitely a step up and she reached the Tokyo final but hopefully if Laura in top form she can at least test her.

I would have called it an observation rather than a criticism.

I'm a great supporter of hers and have been following her avidly since she won Junior Wimby. In the last year or so, that does seem to have been her pattern, and I believe alot of it is now between the ears - although, I do think concentrating training on movement so she can get in a good position to strike the ball well would help.

Laura lost to Kerber 1-6 2-6. She only held serve once out of 8 attempts :(

Alis
01-10-2013, 21:52
The score line makes the match look much more one-sided than it actually was. Laura played very well in parts and broke Kerber's serve on at least two occasions. Unfortunately, she just couldn't sustain it. She really didn't look well, was coughing and spluttering all the way through and, seemingly, is suffering from bronchitis.

Te he, I just asked that on another board. I just hope she's not just broken it.

On the bright side, she's just won in 3hr 13mins against an UNR WC. On this form I don't give her much chance in FRQ where she plays someone with a ranking!

Tough but Laura through in the end, well done. Certainly needs to step up though! However she did take Tara Moore 6-4 in the 3rd last week.

She did, and then Tara got bopped 1 and 2 I think by some lowly player in the next round - so more an indication of Tara not getting on well with hard court than Laura doing well unfortunately.

You said previously you have always been a big supporter of hers.

I'm still a big supporter of hers. Possibly why I get so disappointed/down on her when she doesn't live up to her potential.

I have no clue. She's tried the higher ranked comps and the low this year, and her game is the same ie UEs/DFs. I don't know whether it's just match practice (the level of opponent seems to make little difference to the stats)?
What I do remember from her first career is that when I had just about given up on her (not supporting her, but that she might actually achieve her potential). That she had her great run at the USO. So hopefully the same will happen again. I hope so.

david1610
26-07-2016, 13:41
I am not sure if she might need a sports psychologist or motivator or whatever. Perhaps the physiological problems have taken away so much natural fearlessness. I simply do not know. But it would be nice if she could find some kind of a "rock".

Helen40
26-07-2016, 14:20
I have certainly thought that it would do Laura the world of good to work with someone like the guy who's helped Jo move on leaps and bounds. However, Laura must have thought of that, so again it leaves me clueless. :-(

She is still only 22 isn't she? She can perhaps afford a bit more time, then if things still don't start going in the right direction, surely coaching will be the way forward for her?

Well I had given up on her, and now she's won three matches back to back this week in a 25k (admittedly only 'winning' yesterday because Tara retired due to heat exhaustion.)
Only two DFs in the whole match today, and playing much better. Go Laura!

That seems a much more confident performance, well done Laura! From scoreline seemed Laura was a least competitive with Tara Moore, though depends when the heat started to affect her-Tara was taken to hospital but hopefully ok.

Helen40
12-08-2016, 21:01
Apparently they both started really badly in the first set, then both started to play really well before Tara keeled over and was taken off on a guerney and they suspended play for everyone due to the heat.

Helen40

Really pleased to hear this. Is this the maximum number of games she has won on the trot since getting injured?

I think that it is. Add to that she's in the dubs final with Freya too, so a confidence boosting week all in all.

She's already up from 283 to 261 in LR this week, a win today would mean 247-248.

The only down side is that there are no more tournaments at that level Stateside so she's going to lose that new found momentum. Somehow I can't see her getting a QWC into
Cincy.

I'm sad the match ended in the way it did ie with UEs and nerves deciding it instead of winners - on both sides, but more on Laura's. I was really hoping Laura was on an amazing comeback, but I'll just have to take a good one for now.

I'm happy we've got another Brit though though. I'd love to know why there was so much tension between them.

Hard to know what the future is for her now. Very sad for someone with so much shot making ability. The wrist injury has obviously been a major problem, but I feel she has never resolved other key issues. - her serve and her mobility. I wonder if she is nearing retirement.

JAMES4578
12-01-2017, 10:39
Shame for Laura, disappointing if she was in poor form. Mobility obviously an issue and serve can be more a liability these days, however think confidence also a factor. Feel she really needs to make progress this season or it will be frustrating and difficult for her. Pity didn't work out for Tara either.

Today she plays Sadikovic (Ranking 188) who knocked out the number 1 seed (ranking 106) at about 2pm.

I can't help thinking this is what she should've been doing 6 months ago, start low, get her confidence back and move through the rankings. Her natural talent would be enough to beat most players at this level and it would help build fitness in the process.
