Saw on Facebook that Evans is hitting with Andy, Dom and Liam. Liam is along for the ride and no doubt Jamie is recovering after his win is the USO but I wonder where Kyle was? Perhaps Leon had made his choice. It's a job I wouldn't want and he's got us this far so his choice will be the right one.

An Argentinian journalist speculating on twitter that their captain might pick Leonardo Mayer for the singles thus making Delpo the #1 and so avoiding Andy on Friday but he also says the preferred doubles pairing is Del Potro and Mayer. And we thought Leon had a selection quandary. ;)

suttontennis
13-09-2016, 07:18
I guess the ideal scenario for the Argentine side is splitting the singles on Friday without DelPotro playing, he will play the doubles on Saturday, and then if required he can step in on Sunday to play the fourth singles v Murray.

I suspect suttontennis was referring to the 4th rubber ....

you suspect correctly. The 4th rubber. the 3rd singles. Sunday's first match.
Going into the 4th rubber Argentine would aim to have won at least one of the singles without Del Potro, and the doubles with Del Potro. If they are ahead 2-1 then I would save JM for the 5th singles if required. If they are behind 2-1 then play JM against Andy.

I know, it's absolutely stunningly brilliant. Is it not?
We have such a lot to thank the Murray's for. I know it's down to the individual, but.
Without them and Davis cup I doubt Dan would have ever got his act together,
The match I enjoyed watching most in the US open was Stan V Dan.(great job Dan)
And Kyle came of age in Serbia. The boost that has given his confidence is massive. imho.

Hey you never know if like Matts says we could stop Leon telling Andy what to do maybe we
could win this Davis Cup thingy.

Dan V Pella Hd 2 Hd
2-0 to Dan inc Challengers

Kyle V Pella Hd 2 Hd 0-1

Neither have ever played Delbonis or Mayer

Andy lost to Delbonis this year at I W (their only meeting)
So he'll have his notes.
Andy don't seem like I W much, he lost to Delpo there too.
Andy and Pella have never met. Don't see that being much of a worry though.

I think/hope it's gonna be a cracker.
Although last years doubles against the Aussies will take some beating.

Geek corner. ;) According to the Argentinian captain the court surface is fast and apparently this is the reason.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CsRQ4W8WIAEyx14.jpg

It's comprised of two layers of chipboard. When Argentina played the semi-final in Belgium last year there was only one layer which apparently makes the surface softer and hence slower.

Ooooh it's nearly time...Kyle or Dan, Dan or Kyle...both in great form, both shown they can deliver under pressure in a DC cauldron...who will it be?? I like and admire both equally, but think I am going to say Evo. There is nothing else to separate them, so has to come down to style match ups, and I just feel that Evo could, with his more varied and unconventional game, weave a little magic and unsettle the clay specialist Argies. But of course whoever Captain Fantastic selects is the right choice - great that it's such a tough one to make.:GBflag::GBflag::GBflag:.....jeez, shouldn't be on here, haven't even started packing yet :-/

Personally I'd probably go with Kyle, because of his achievements in Serbia. It's not a rational choice though which is why it's good that I don't make the decision lol. Leon is right in that there will be no hard feelings whoever isn't picked. The guys all know the deal, who is picked is a reflection on who Leon thinks has the best chance of winning, not on how much they deserve it or who he likes more. He has never led us wrong before, so in Leon we trust. I suspect it will be Dan he picks as I think at the moment he has an edge on Kyle in confidence. But it is really hard because there isn't much between them. As many have said and as Leon says, it's a good position to be in. I'm sure whatever decisions come tomorrow all of the matches will be great and we will win lol

It's a great position to be in be a very difficult selection to reduce the five to four, especially with Kyle and Dom both winning crucial points in Serbia. I think Dom will be the unlucky one, assuming Andy is fully fit, he will want to play all three, as usual, it also means Leon can select both Kyle and Dan, possibly splitting a rubber each

is there a picture I can put up of some-one rapidly unpacking sunscreen and shorts, and replacing with umbrella and hot water bottle ? Pleased for Kyle but feeling really sorry for Dan, expected him to be chosen considering how well he has been playing recently I'm gutted for Evo! He was definitely my pick but not just because I'm biased .... also because it's a fast court and he's better on fast surfaces. Oh well ... in Leon we trust. He has got it bang on so far in previous ties.

EDIT to say I also feel sad for those not able to come Friday who will now miss Andy v DelPo. I was really hoping they would pick Mayer so that Andy v DelPo would be Sunday .... but I guess they will both be fresh on Friday which is better for them.

I'm gutted for Evo!

I am really sad about that too Caro, but that's the way it is. Still going to be fun Saturday and Sunday. Good point about them being fresher on Friday. Looking forward to meeting up. :GBflag:

So sorry to hear about Mr Murray senior. Fortunately he lived to see his grandson win a double Olympic medal and a double wimbledont title as well as the usopen. Also, of course Jamie winning his men's doubles title at Australia.
I wonder if Andy knew of his deterioration when he lost last Wednesday.
83 is a good innings but it's never easy to lose someone special

I wondered that too. I also wondered why the family couldn't have postponed the funeral until next week but, of course, there may be all sorts of reasons and it's really none of our business anyway.

HUGE respect to Andy for this - to miss his own grandfather's funeral so as to not let his Davis Cup teammates down, that truly is dedication. I agree that it's what his grandfather would have wanted but nevertheless, I truly have to take my hat off to him. :)

I must admit, I never thought I'd say this, but if Andy had chosen to miss the opening day to attend the funeral (and I don't think anyone could have blamed him), I still think we would have been in with a legitimate shot at 1-1 by the end of the day, with the added silver lining of Andy being fresh for the doubles. If I'm honest I don't think Kyle would have beaten Delpo, but I think Dan is capable of it because of the strength of his defence, and I think either of them could beat Pella over 5 sets. It's quite an exciting prospect! :)

Really looking forward to this tie! :GBflag:

Take care... :)

Some quotes from Andy's press conference.

“It was very fine margins… could have gone either way.” [They were, indeed, separated by three points in the 343 played.]

Would he manage to recover for doubles tomorrow?

“Don’t know, never played a match that long. So have to see how I feel when I wake up tomorrow, and then probably make a decision then. Never played a match that long.”

“I did great today, very proud of how I fought. I did fantastic. I fought for every points, did as best as I could. That’s all you can do. I did great today.”

Del Po's serve is so annoying. Any time Andy has a sniff he hits a massive one. Andy has served amazingly maybe the best I've ever seen and still losing
I so agree, an impressive serve and oddly enough it doesn't irritate me as Raonic's does!

There's your break. ;)

I hope the LTA have got a money back guarantee on a fast court surface, it's like a sponge.

Kyle playing nothing like in Serbia, miss-timing and not hitting as fast winners like there, court doesn't give him enough time to get in position.

I don't agree, Andy was patchy serving 52%, conceeded 20bp and one game he was broken didn't get a first serve in

So many of Andy's 35 aces were on crucial points, the 52% figure is misleading.
