Andy could have served safely and achieved a higher percentage in, but he was really going for it, and got all those aces when he needed them - and the number of BPs has a lot to do with how his opponent was playing!

Think it was more due to making more unforced errors than delpo and conceding so many second serves which offset a lot of the benefit of those aces

A lot of gaps appearing in crowd now, hospitality left ages ago, Kyle back from toilet break

I'm going to say it because hindsight is wonderful ;) but I would have picked Evo over Kyle. His previous experience would have been invaluable in such a match. Leon perhaps banking too much on Andy beating Del Potro.

Leon picked the wrong second player and now its going to backfire with Andy unlikely to play tomorrow so, rightly, last year Mr Smith got praised but this time, again rightly so, he will get criticised.

Can see this being another 4-1 loss to Argentina.

I called it France's year for trophy this year and I stick by that.

Easy to say it was the wrong choice, but would Dan have done so much better? Sadly we have relied on Andy but Delpo was just too good today.
We had the strongest team for a long time, but just not strong enough consistently yet.
Wonder who will play tomorrow

Just sitting down to relax and recuperate after today's efforts. Firstly despite the loss Andy's effort today was beyond words, knowing his grandad's funeral was going on while he was playing. I can't even think how that must have felt. I was lucky enough to be on the front row and to see Delpo and Andy playing that match at such close quarters was an amazing experience. One moment will live with me forever, when Andy broke back to make it 5-5 in the 3rd set, he prowled along the sideline by the AMFF seats, looking at us all going completely crazy. It was like he was drawing the strength from us, whilst also wanting us to know he appreciated the massive support. Frankly it gave me goosebumps and I'll never forget it.

Had to leave in the 2nd set of Kyle's match but followed online. Who knows if Leon made the wrong choice? It's only wrong when it doesn't go the way we want. Won't be surprised if Dan replaces Andy tomorrow

Also would just like to say that AMFF were amazing today. If there was an Oscar for fan group support, we would have won it. Also think SG's flag gave us a real presence, and it was our way that Andy turned to for that moment when he connected with the crowd. Let's throw everything at it tomorrow and see what happens :GBflag::GBflag::GBflag::GBflag::GBflag:

I believe that we can win! Realistically a tough ask (but of course possible) and even if the matches went against us seen some fantastic tennis and still a great day! Maybe Kyle a bit disappointing,Andy pretty much gave it his all but just didn't quite have enough against an inspired Delpotro and obviously a challenging day.

I suspect that Leon picked the way he did because he thought the best chance against Delpo on Sunday would be with a fresh player, hoping to take advantage with of any tiredness. Someone who can grind him down over 5 sets, or who at leat has a chance of doing so. Dan has a better chance at this than Kyle. The. Only way to keep him fresh was not to play him today. I don't know. But it makes sense to me. Andy absolutely gave everything he had. There is sadness here because we wanted the win but NO disappointment in Andy. Just pride that he played the way he did and gave his all on a really tough day. As for Kyle, he just didn't have it today. It was horrible to see how sad he was, but he lifted when we cheered him off regardless.

As for the forum. A fantastic show of support again. I was up and down and screamed my lungs out, and I'm looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow. I BELIEVE...

What was going on in the crowd to upset Andy?

roytennisfan
17-09-2016, 08:50
Well on reflection what a wonderfully exciting day of tennis yesterday with a tremendous atmosphere, having ties at the Emirates never dissapoints. It was a pleasure to be there with the forum members. Whilst the results went against us, I must admit it was still very enjoyable, Andy fought and gave his all but it was not to be, Kyle couldn't repeat his heroics in Belgrade and left the arena distraught, I really felt for him as he left the arena, such a low after having such a high in Belgrade. Unlike Birmingham the forum members were rightfully down the front and had great seats with bats just behind us. I know Andy must have been tired after his longest ever tie and I was absolutely shattered, much more tiring watching matches like that than playing tennis! Before the start i felt it would have been much better if Kyle had been on first having the crowd more behind him and without the pressure he faced after Andy's loss. Anyway two more days, let's win the next two rubbers and take it to the decider. Let's celebrate the tremendous achievement of six consecutive davis cup wins and it is great to hae been a part of all of them. Win or lose the lads should hold their heads high for the tremendous tennis we have had the privilege to watch during the past two years.

Well done to all of you who were there and cheering so madly. I would never have the stamina for that.

You have the fun of the experience and the camaraderie. So helps to bear the losses.

I think Leon's calculations were based on winning 3 -0 , or 3 -1. He surely did not think GB would be 2-0 down after first day.

17-09-2016, 09:04
What was going on in the crowd to upset Andy?

The Argies kept saying sush between his first and second serve, so Andy told them (very politely I thought) to shut up. Overall though I thought the Argie fans were very good and respectful, which hasn't always been their reputation.

Josephine
17-09-2016, 09:17
Coming round more to the idea of 3 sets in Davis Cup singles. can still have 5 in doubles to make Saturday worthwhile. Not just because Andy would have won, but because that match has now severally handicapped him for the rest of the tie. I was so against that journalist on twitter wanting to have all matches 3 sets, but a little bit of me is wondering whether amazing fitness should be the criteria for winning a tennis match (and being able to play the next one). Shouldn't it be the tennis?

Just that some athletes have a lot of endurance. And having a TUE for example could affect that.

Just throwing it out there.

The decision to play Del Potro could back fire for Argentina but, I suppose, any on from Mayer/Delbonis can be a good sub.

According to Sue, its likely that Dan will be choice for that match, a bit harsh on Kyle but the correct one due to Dan been fresh and raring to go.

I cant see Del Potro getting nod so imho, it'll be Delbonis.

Don't believe it IMHO it will be Dan v DelPo

You could be right.....on the other hand you could be judging him against an Andy Murray who would play that match if he had to walk on court on crutches. Maybe Delpo has other successes on his mind ?

What would you rather take on Dan?
I still believe it's down to us.
We need to get in their heads,(argentina) and support our lads.
There's sod all between us, and if genuine support makes no difference,
then what the hell we doing here?
Let's make this the biggest come back in Davis Cup history.
They maybe ahead in the battle but we're gonna win the WAR.
And if you don't believe that, well.

And if you need proof/inspiration just check out BBC catch up,
Saturday's doubles 1 all in sets 4 all in the 3rd set that's the D's B's right there.
Psychologically we can turn this on it's head, the pressure is on them.
I'm sorry but we all saw even Delpo start to loose it on several occasions.
I'm sure I don't have to get specific to make my point.
I've never condoned dirty tactics but Argentina's supporters behaviour
between Andy's 1st and 2nd serves was abysmal (both matches)
I'm not saying we should do the same, heaven forbid.:halo:
No we can do better than that, we always have so far even in the final
when there was some very dubious whistling and hooter blowing on
Andy's more important serves in Belgium.
WILL is a massive thing and by the will of the masses tomorrow,
WE WILL WIN.

Mayer deserved to win that match - from the second set on he played brilliantly. It may be sacrilege to say it but I'm actually not devastated by this loss. They made it to the semis - made a good stab at defending their title and gave us all huge entertainment. What's more, they are still in the World Group. I think in an Olympic year it was just too much to expect Andy to carry the Davis Cup too. At least now he can recover and concentrate on his own career for the rest of the season.
