A lot of discussion about delpos wildcard. Admittedly I am a Delpo fan. But even if I wasn't I would have to side with Andy and Raffa on this one. Raffa pointed out that Delpo was a form us open champion (therefore deserve it) and Murray said that his low ranking was injury related (which it is) and without injuries he would be seeded. It is for those who deserve it and he does. As for Johnson saying that it could take opportunity from an American, whilst this is true, he could take one from anyone. It's not the USTA'splace to create a draw to protect their players. If you get him and he beats you then you weren't good enough. I'm sure djoko wasn't happy getting him in the first round. But that is no reason to not reward a deserving player. Nor is it reason enough to deprive fans of what could be great matches. A bit of a strange comment from Steve. But well done to the USTA

Found this on Eurosport - http://www.eurosport.co.uk/tennis/us-open/2016/eurosport-to-serve-up-best-ever-coverage-of-us-open-live-and-exclusively_sto5723812/story.shtml

Eurosport, the UK’s home of Grand Slam tennis, is to bring tennis fans the best ever coverage of the US Open with more than 200 hours exclusively live as history maker Andy Murray, the first tennis player to win two Olympic singles titles, targets back-to-back Grand Slams.

All the action from 29 August to 11 September will be shown live and exclusively on Eurosport 1, Eurosport 2 and the Eurosport Player which, for the first time in the UK, will show live action from 12 match courts so tennis fans can enjoy unparalleled coverage on multiple devices, when and where they want.

A stellar presenter line-up has been secured for the US Open with Rob Curling at the helm alongside former British No. 1 players Greg Rusedski and Annabel Croft. Grand Slam champions Pat Cash, Mats Wilander and Mary Pierce will be joined in Flushing Meadows by Andrew Castle, Mark Petchey, Jo Durie and Catherine Whitaker with Simon Reed, Frew McMillan and Chris Bradnam on commentary duties.

If one subscribes to Eurosport for a month then one will get 12 courts which is more than Sky covered on the red button. And they have got Mark Petchey.

Totally agree JerryD.
Somebody call the wambulance for Steve Johnson. What a whinger. Didn't know much about him til a week ago - but he had a major hissy fit against Andy in Rio over a line call that wasn't even bad, and then said DelPo shouldn't get a wild card.:grrr: Not overly impressed. Of course it's only right DelPo got a WC as a former champ and overcoming so much adversity. Shame on Steve Johnson for running scared like a little chicken, and well done Andy and Rafa for supporting DelPo

It's just disrespectful, to q guy who has earned respect coming back the way he has time and time again. Other players have said they don't know if they would have been able to. I was pleased with Andy and raffa's responses. No word word from djoko because he's not in cinci but I imagine he would agree with them

I used to really like berdych. The. One year at the world tour finals he was continually moaning about one thing and then another in a match with Andy. Ended up insisting on one of the balls being removed from the game saying it was soft. Something Murray didn't agree with. Then last year when he was trying to practice at the world tour finals, there was a malfunction with the speakers that meant interviews with people in the Barclays fan lounge was being broadcast into the practice court, and insanely loud. Rather than pulling the diva I expected, he just got on with it, after a while when it kept distracting him he laughed it off. Then still put in time with the fans. Then this year at Wimbledon he came down through the queue meeting fans. My option of him has improved. So I have to say I'm sorry for him that he can't compete in the last major of the year or have a good session with his new coach. It may also reduce his chances of making the finals.

When I had mine out I didn't have keyhole - it depended on which day of the week I had appendicitis - some surgeons did it and others did not.

Cilic's win in Cincinnati means he's up to seventh seed and could be drawn to meet Andy in the quarter-final.

Top 8 seeds.
1. Djokovic
2. Murray
3. Wawrinka
4. Nadal
5. Raonic
6. Nishikori
7. Cilic
8. Thiem

Teresa

Mr M has won Queen's for the 5th time, Wimbledon for the 2nd time, The Olympic Singles Gold Medal for the 2nd time. Cilic was playing a Murray with a completely empty tank. The only person who should be seriously worried about last nights result is Raonic. He didn't even manage to take even a set off a completely knackered Murray. I am not worried about Murray meeting Cilic in the US Open one whit (or no more so than usual). For anyone other than Djokovic to beat Murray, Murray has to be sick or exhausted.

Pure speculation but is Harman's earlier tweet a hint that Becker has been bunted by Novak? Yesterday Becker tweeted "Everything happens for a reason ...#word" and today Harman (for some reason) retweeted a tweet of Boris's this morning of him standing in front of a Frankfurt hotel. Becker has since tweeted "#NYC here we come ..." but he probably had already bought the tickets so might as well use them. :p ;)

That's where my thoughts were heading too. Something about the way he was tweeting on Cincinatti felt a bit odd for another players coach.( Though Boris is odd Imo) and that tweet about everything for a reason really jumped out at me. Andy's prospective route:

QF: Nishikori
SF: Wawrinka
F: Djokovic

Wawrinka arguably with the toughest draw:

R1: Verdasco
R2: Kudla/Qualifier
R3: Zverev
R4: Kyrgios
QF: Del Potro/Thiem
SF: Murray
F: Djokovic

Nadal to the QF on the other hand:

R1: Istomin

R3: Pouille
R4: Bautista Agut
QF: Raonic
SF: Djokovic
F: Murray

Hmm - not easy for any of them. I believe if Andy makes the final, he will be only the fourth player in history to have reached all four Major finals in a calendar year - the others being Laver, Federer and Djokovic - elite company indeed! Go Andy!!

For me, the only concern in the first 4 rounds is Dimitrov who always gives Andy a tough match even when he's not playing well (Miami this year) and now that he's recovered some form I expect him to make round 4.

Might be a good time for Kyle to play Gasquet who looked to be struggling when he lost in straight sets to John Millman yesterday in Winston-Salem and Evo pushed him close on Monday.

Think Dimitrov quite likely to come through in that quarter too. And he has Dani as coach now so that could be a testing one, if it happens.

Rafa has a pretty straightforward draw up to QF and would expect him to beat Raonic based on R's performance in Cinci anyway.

What seemed odd is that Djokovic now seems to have a problem with his right wrist. His serving speeds were way down on normal but he came through ok in the end. He's most certainly not 100% at the moment, whether he will be in 2 weeks remains to be seen.

Well you say fine.........but Janowicz has barely played for 6 months. He's played 2 challengers in the last month, losing in the first round of the first before making the QF of the second. This is a player who is not match fit, but he still nicked a set from the Number 1. He might find Vesely and Youhzny offering significantly more opposition in the next couple of rounds.

JAMES4578
30-08-2016, 09:23
Had it been near the Janowicz of old certainly would've been a lot tougher but he has struggled the past few years even before the setback,Djokovic may have won comfortably enough in the end but looks like it wasn't that convincing.

Bardot
30-08-2016, 10:54
Having saved 2 BPs on his serve to lead 3-2 in the first set, Djokovic took an MTO on his upper right arm. He immediately broke Janowicz's serve in the next game. Strange how often that happens.

Djokovic's next opponent Vesely stopped what would have been an even better story than Jan Satral. Qualifier Saketh Myneni was a point away from his first ATP/Slam win at the age of 28. He started cramping leading 4-2 in the 5th set. Somehow he held serve to lead 5-2 (Vesely was also struggling) then had a MP on Vesely's serve which he appeared to win on a DF but the out call was overruled by the umpire (no hawkeye) and Vesely saved the MP with his next serve. Myneni struggled on in agony but didn't win another game and lost the set 5-7. Lucky Vesely although it may be lucky Djokovic given how much Jiri was struggling at the end. The match lasted 3:47.

Of the 32 matches played, 11 went to five sets which seems high.

Not sure it's good for nole either gonna be Friday now before he plays, with his lack of matches lately you would think he's trying to find some form & Rhythm

Yeah I agree I think djoko would have preferred to get another match under his belt especially after injury and then a wobble in last round

Saying that, neither of the two opponents he could get in the third round would be likely to bother him.

Delighted for Kyle, he is playing so confidently. In its way that takes a lot of pressure off Andy....it gives the papers something else to talk about...especially if Jo Konta wins as well

Harrison wind 6-1 in the 4th and big upset Raonic out, great match from Ryan! Didn't see much of this but apparently Milos has a few injuries, not sure the heat was so much a factor.

He wasn't injured he just didn't cope with the high humidity today Ryan was just in awesome form

Gutted for raonic. I really like him and was looking forward to him going deep. This humidity has got people today

Djokovic will be delighted to be through to round 3. Time to let injuries recover. No energy expended in the terrible humidity. And Raonic out of his way too.

Does anyone know why people who have retired in the singles, for example Vesely and Dolgopolov, are then allowed to play in the doubles? Surely if you are not fit you shouldn't be allowed to play from that point on. I feel very sorry for S Myneni who lost to Vesely in 5. I'm sure he would have enjoyed playing Nole! Same with Dolgopolov retiring against Ferrer. Just seems odd.

Apparently at the US Open they have a roof policy where they will reopen the roof during a match if the weather clears. At Wimbledon once they have started playing under the roof the roof stays closed until the end of the match.

I guess it is always possible for an injury/illness to improve/be different for a doubles match after retiring from singles. The doubles matches are at a different time/day etc.

I tend to like that policy as all the slams are essentially outdoor tournaments and as far as possible should be played outdoors. Obviously the roof is a godsend when the weather turns inclement and allows matches etc to be completed and fans to see some tennis. I wonder how the players feel about the roof being reopened during a match?

The problem is that the conditions are different underneath the roof - so it takes some adapting to. Also there would be an interruption in the match while the roof was reopened.

Yes it's a difficult one. But same circumstances apply to both players. And if rain comes mid match there is an interruption anyway and so on ad infinitum....the argument goes round in circles! Bottom line....we will have tennis regardless!

The roof takes longer to open and close at Wimbledon so I guess that's why they avoid the interruption of re opening the roof once a match has started.

Interestingly, there was a discussion earlier on Eurosport about the USO policy of reopening the roof during play, and either Pat Cash or Rusedski (senior moment...can't remember which one it was!) said they wouldn't have liked that if they were playing. Would be interesting to know what all the players think.

Such interruptions can change the momentum in a match. Think back to 2012 and the Murray vs Federer Wimbledon final. Even a relatively short delay can change momentum. That's why players can get so irritated about MTO's if they think their opponent is 'swinging the led'.

Joao Sousa has just beaten Feliciano Lopez(16) 6-2 6-4 1-6 7-5. He was the seed drawn to meet Andy in the fourth round. Sousa plays the winner of Chardy/Dimitrov which has just started.

I'm watching Lorenzi/Simon (whilst keeping an eye on Evo) so nobody else has to. ;) Lorenzi was leading 2 sets to 1 and had 2 BPs leading 4-1 in the fourth and was up 40-0 at 4-2 but then lost the set in a tie-break and they're into a fifth. A gruelling match in the humidity with many long rallies which has taken 3:42 so far. Lorenzi started to cramp at the end of the fourth set.

Bardot
02-09-2016, 03:30
Lorenzi chokes, serving a DF on MP at 5-4 in the fifth then a FH into the bottom of the net on the second MP. Simon is a freak of nature whose grinding is even better in the fifth hour. The match will be decided by a fifth set TB after 4:46.

Andy will play Lorenzi in the third round after he outlasted Simon 3-6 6-2 6-2 6-7(1) 7-6(3) in 4:54. The cramping at the end of the fourth didn't seem to a problem in the fifth but it reappeared at the handshake. Exhausting watching, heaven knows what it was like to play but an incredibly high standard in the fifth set all things considered.

Bardot
02-09-2016, 03:47
Andy & Lorenzi have played each other twice but a long time ago with Andy winning both. 2005 US Open qualifying and 2006 in Adelaide. This is Lorenzi's first slam 3rd round in 22 attempts at age 34.
