Five top fifty matches. Results so far: 5-0. Matches so far at this US Open: 7 Sets won and lost: 14/0.
Some nerves at the beginning (0-2) and the end (a few deuces before closing it out) but inbetween wins 12/13 games.
We still do not know what her current level is - she will now play the World No. 12 player and Olympic Champion Belina Bencic. It may show she is not at that level yet. Or it may not.
What is exciting me as much as anything else is she seems to be enjoying the experience and she acts as if she truly belongs on Ashe, or wherever.
One step at a time but so exciting! :)

Emma is something else. I hope she can hold onto that joy in her tennis as expectations rise. I remember Andy with joy in his heart and then it changed - though he never smiled as much as Emma!

Some more info courtesy of a match report from the Guardian:

"With her victory, Raducanu became just the third qualifier in the Open era to reach the US Open quarter-finals. ... She arrived in the fourth round having lost fewer games than any other player and she has shown no sign of stopping."
Edit: The WTA report has more details.

Some extraordinary performances from Emma, though Rogers did fall away. Would expect it to be a much tougher test from Bencic but should give a clearer idea of her current capability. Obviously seems great potential but think should not get carried away just yet, still needs to develop further. [perhaps we ought to rename the forum the ERFF !!
I can seriously see her being Brit no.1 by the beginning of the year, as long as 1. she stays fit and healthy, 2. she doesnt have an obvious weakness which means the other players can't figure out a plan to beat her.

It must be difficult for Laura Robson to commentate on her matches. Laura was in the same position, having an exceptional US Open in 2012, beating Clijsters and Li Na, the world at her feet. Within 2 years her career had stalled.

Mmm.. Emma went 0-2 but was 40-0 on her serve and had slotted into a rhythm then Bencic asked to see Hawkeye then got two points. A big of gamesmanship there. :( C'mon Emma!

Sallydaisy

Bencic serving 2-1, a break up, holds for 3-1.
Obviously she's feeling confident, having won Olympic Gold, and she plays an aggressive game so Emma might not find a way to get into the match until set 2.

Clever play from Bencic to hold to 3-4, she added in a few drop shots and that won the points. However, it was the only way she got past Raducanu who had a point for the game at 40-30.

Just awesome from Emma , relative lack of exeperience proving no barrier as in the end she just swept past the reigning olympic champion which required supreme match play. Bencic did have a few half chances to possibly turn it around but Raducanu tended to find the answers in the key moments. perhaps was not the best display from Bencic but Emma put under pressure. Need to see if she keep it going in the semi but such bright potential.

Emma's schedule was originally:-
w/c 13/9: Luxembourg WTA $250k - ??? - she is 19th Alt for Main Draw, didn't enter Qualies.
w/c 20/9: Columbus WTA $125k - now withdrawn

I'd guess she'll withdraw from Luxemburg unless given a WC or SE spot. Depends on whether she plans to spend the autumn on tour in Europe or the USA/Indian Wells.

david1610
08-09-2021, 22:07
It is possible that Emma has such talent that it might not have made any difference but I think it is wonderful that she did not venture onto the WTA tour until a few weeks ago after she had finished school so at 18 rather than dabbling when 16 and 17. Perhaps one of the few blessings of COVID-19? She is so self-assured and there is a maturity in her stroke making and point construction way beyond her years never mind the power and weight of her shots. I think it is telling that if you read between the lines in her answers in interviews, the level and victories have not come as a complete surprise but just how quickly they have come.

JAMES4578

Emma's semi will be against Maria Sakkari, the 17th seed put out the Wimbledon finalist and 4th seed Karolina Pliskova 6-4,6-4. In the last 16 though she was on court for 3 and a half hours as she battled past former champ Bianca Andreescu .

Emma has withdrawn from Luxembourg (as expected).

Next event she is entered for is the Chicago WTA500 where she is top of the Qualifying Alternates list. However, she might be offered a Wildcard to it and also Indian Wells.

I read an interesting article today by Judy Murray which said it's important not to overburden Emma so early in her career and advised her team to be 'savvy with scheduling' and not accept every invitation that comes her way. Don't know how many picked up on the comment from Emma's official press conference last night, but she was asked about how well she knew Laylah Fernandez, the other teenager in the other semi final. Just a few stats emerging about the 2 teenagers who'll face off in the Final.

Going into the final, time on court:
Fernandez - 12 hours 45 minutes.
Raducanu - 11 hours 39 minutes. That INCLUDES Emma’s extra three additional qualifying matches to make main draw.

British tennis funfact:
Harriet Dart has beaten both the 2021 US Open finalists this summer.

what a performance from Emma to reach the final;some incredible tennis, Admittedly Sakkari had a pretty slow start but Emma put her under pressure and stayed strong in the 2nd. Today’s win will take Emma up to 32 in the WTA rankings and to 28 in the WTA Race.

Emma has no points to defend until Wimbledon next year so if she keeps racking up wins she'd likely be a seed at the Australian Open 2022.

As if Andy would be annoyed that Emma changed coaches, although I am surprised he hasn't made a public comment as he's not normally slow in championing the Ladies game, and any British achievements. But that's his choice.

Emma has entered Qualifying for Indian Wells.

Before you ask ... (and thanks to Tennis on Telly (https://twitter.com/tennisontelly) for the following)

The Indian Wells main draw entry list is based on last week's rankings (Monday 6th September), i.e. before the US Open ended/points added.
Emma Raducanu's ranking was not high enough when the entry list closed.
A wildcard needs to be offered and accepted to get into the main draw without qualifying.

Entering for qualifying this week is an indication she wants to play the event,
so it's likely she will accept a wildcard if she's offered it.

RosieBear
15-09-2021, 06:06
She's also currently scheduled to be in qualifying for the WTA 500 event in Chicago which starts on 27th September.

I expect she'll get offered wildcards into both Chicago and IW, but wouldn't be surprised if she only plays IW.

Emma still to decide on whether to travel to Indian Wells in 2 weeks time. She has parted company with Andrew Richardson, the coach who took her to winning the US Open.

Details from Tom Morgan (https://twitter.com/Tom_Morgs) DT (although he actually wrote Andrew Robertson!!!)
"Emma Raducanu on splitting with coach Andrew Richardson after US Open fairytale: "It's tough to have that convo with anyone, but I think for me like that's just really what I need - someone who's had that professional tour experience, and been through it".

and Russell Fuller (https://twitter.com/russellcfuller) on Twitter:
"So, Emma Raducanu will take the next step without her US Open winning coach Andrew Richardson: “Never did I even dream of winning the US Open and now I’m ranked 22, which is pretty crazy to me, I feel like I really need someone that has had that WTA Tour experience.”
Raducanu is likely to decide this weekend whether she is ready to play in Indian Wells the week after next. Says she doesn’t want to jump back in too soon; but is also aware qualification for the WTA Finals is no longer a ridiculous scenario."

IN many ways it might be a blessing that a bit of reality came along straightaway. Best thing IMHO about the match was in the first half of the second set she realised she was not hitting the ball accurately enough to blow her opponent off court so she concentrated on keeping the ball in play and Sasnovich's unforced errors increased. She looked tired today as if she was coming down with something, or perhaps the time of the month. Oh well. Always a lesson to be learnt! And having back-to-back British Grand Slam champions on the same court is something to remember! :)

suttontennis
09-10-2021, 07:00
So I dare say the general media will say she's a failure or ththat 'we' (meaning the press) put too great a pressure on her. But it's one match. In a long road. I listened to it on the radio and it sounded like she was overhitting, and Sasnovitch had a good game plan that worked. Onwards to Moscow

We have seen this a lot from the young ones - they win a grand slam and then stutter a bit when they first return.
Like David said this will focus her mind a bit.
Tbh I don’t see how she can cope with all the interest in her without a coach, especially at her young age.

RosieBear

I got up and watched the match. Given that she hasn't played in a month, that in that month her whole life has changed and the conditions in IW couldn't be more different from NY, I thought she did well and the scoreline was respectable. As many have said, just the beginning for Emma. Onwards and most definitely upwards for our bright young thing.

Quite honestly I am not expecting her to win many matches over the next few weeks as she adjusts to being on the tour, doing lots of travelling and playing in higher level tournaments. When she won at the US Open she had already been in the USA for a while so was well adapted to the time zones and conditions etc.

Times (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/emma-raducanu-blip-was-to-be-expected-says-andy-murray-bk0zbh7qf) - Emma Raducanu blip was to be expected, says Andy Murray

“What happened in New York was obviously incredible but in tennis and sport, it doesn’t just go in an upwards direction all the time,” Murray, 34, said. “There’s always little bumps and stuff along the way. It’s just a little bump, but I think pretty much everyone was sort of expecting that as well. I don’t think it’s anything unexpected to be honest.

“I don’t know her unbelievably well. I just know from the people that have worked and been around her, they all say the same things. She’s obviously unbelievably bright, well educated and stuff, so you would imagine she would certainly be a lot better equipped to deal with everything that’s going on than most and deal with it in a more mature way than I would have done when I was 18.”

It has been noticeable in recent weeks that Murray has been reluctant to make bold predictions when asked about Raducanu’s full potential. Reading newspaper articles and watching television interviews in the weeks after her US Open triumph has brought him some uncomfortable déjÃ* vu of individuals with tenuous links claiming credit and heaping on further pressure.

“Maybe some of the stuff that went on around her, it seemed like everyone was sort of coming out the woodwork off the back of it, which I guess you maybe expect,” Murray said. “But then obviously the media is wanting comments as well from everybody because it’s such a huge story as well, so maybe that’s understandable.

Per Russell Fuller on Twitter:

Emma is planning a trial period with Esteban Carril, former coach of Jo Konta.
He worked with Jo for some time and helped her from top 100 to top 10,
take her first title and into the SF of the US Open.

It may be that other trial periods will follow the one with Carril, as Raducanu and her family try to identify the right coach to lead her into January's Australian Open.

I do hope things work out for Emma as soon as possible, she needs stability.

But what a mess.

When I heard she'd split from Andrew Richardson I thought it was because he was no longer available and wanted to focus on his son. But knowing he would have stayed on makes Emma's (parents', agents') decision unfathomable. What more can anyone want from a coach than to achieve something so amazing that it has never been done before?!? Talk about tried and tested. To split from him at all is a bizarre decision but to do it before having someone else lined up and issuing pleas in pressers is jaw-droppingly crazy. Sorry but it is. Good player-coach chemistry can be really hard to find. Plus a lot of coaches will be thinking very hard about whether they want to work with her - if AR's job wasn't safe after all he achieved with Emma then whose would be?! She could have had people queuing up to work with her if she'd gone about things differently, but they won't be now. It's a real shame because I think she's a wonderful , lovely girl and I don't think any of this is her doing.

Just hope it works out for her.

cazza99
18-10-2021, 12:52
Apparently her management company advised the split with AR too - so they may have had more influence than her parents. I would have thought AR would have been understanding travelling with her while she was looking too. Having said this, at the US Open there were times when she looked at Tim Henman rather than AR at important moments.

This is what Mark Petchey has to say about the coaching situation - posted on the Raducanu facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1871620716333366/?hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&multi_permalinks=1950171828478254

Mark Petchey, a former coach of Emma's who worked with her from July-December 2020 and again from March-April of 2021 was recently interviewed. When asked about Emma's coaching situation, he shed some meaningful light on her unique situation .
Those who remain critical of her should acknowledge what he has to say, bearing in mind, as a former coach he totally understands her situation and her needs as a progressive player.
Finding the right coach for a pro player can often be tough, notes Petchey, and with Raducanu will now be all the more difficult. "Especially when dealing with something so unique as an 18-year-old who's won a Grand Slam and also wants to have a good conversation," he said. "And I think, to be honest, that Emma will go through a lot of coaches during her career because she will take what she needs from someone and she will find someone else who will be good for something else. She's very proactive about the way she wants to build her game."
"People need to understand that there will be a lot of collaborations during her career, rather than the 'hiring' and 'firing' of a coach. It feels so personal, and people need to stop getting hung up on hiring and firing."
Thank you Mark Petchey for clarifying Emma's unique situation. Hopefully the criticisms will come to an end.

Well done Emma. When in full flow one of the most watchable, exciting players in the game, male or female. Just love her.

Sallydaisy

Kostyuk playing very well indeed, breaks Emma in the 1st game of the 2nd set.
And holds her serve for a 2-0 lead. At 19 she's just 6 months older than the Brit
and has worked her way up the tour with some good results this year.

Emma needs to find her A game super pronto!

Emma goes a double-break down ...
Kostyuk will serve with a 4-1 lead.

NB Kostyuk won the Australian Open Juniors at age 14 - she's good but rather mentally volatile at times. Today she's playing very mature tennis and Emma is just not finding her own game at all let alone trouble the Ukrainian.

Emma loses 2-6, 1-6 to Kostyuk - a shame but perhaps not unexpected.

Time to prepare for the Australian Open ... just some exho's over the winter break.

What a shame for Emma that she couldn't do herself justice tonight, but new to playing next day, plus seemed that her opponent was in her head a little from their junior history. All part of the learning curve. Onwards and upwards young Emma.

It's interesting... there are six teenagers in the top 100... Marta Kostyuk 55 (today's opponent), Camila Osorio (53), Clara Tauson (49), Leylah Fernandez (26 -the US Open Finalist opponent), Cori Gauff (24) and Emma (23).
I think all her peers will want to get some bragging rights over her as they realise they may be playing each other for years to come.

Yes, she is still on the entry list for Linz next week.
It's a WTA250 and not too far from Roumania.

Another story not connected with Tennis. Eddie Jones is a MCP and clearly hasn't bothered researching his story correctly. Why shouldn't she enjoy the success while she was in NY, god it's not as though she was falling out of nightclubs at 3am or appearing in Playboy. She's played two tournaments since and done ok, nothing spectacular but from where she's come from she's doing ok. Just let her play !!

Another BBC article saying Emma has a coach in place for the Australian Open - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/59200650

It turns out she has been ill for a few days, which may explain why she was tired when she was beaten in Austria.

Citing tiredness, Raducanu was beaten heavily by Marta Kostyuk in the last eight. She says she felt unwell after the event, but was able to resume training on Thursday following five negative PCR tests for Covid-19.
