:phew:
This is some tennis from the ladies!!!
2 breaks and 2 holds for 2-2 and they are absolutely pasting the ball.
Raducanu has broken again to go 3-2 up in the 2nd set and serving next

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 18:08
A love hold and Emma goes up 4-2 in the 2nd set.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 18:11
Wang holds 3-4.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 18:18
Wang breaks and is now serving at 4-4. Dodgy times for Emma.
Wang held and had 3 chances to win the match.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 18:36
Tie-break to decide the 2nd set and possibly match. Wang to serve:

*0-1 superb point from Raducanu to break - needs to hold 2
0-2*
0-3* big error at the net from Wang
*0-4
*0-5
0-6* Emma has 5 set points.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 18:36
Emma takes the 2nd set 7'6(0) ...
... and that folks is her first ever tie-break set on the WTA tour!
(her first was at a Grand Slam this year at Wimbledon).

Jan
09-11-2021, 18:37
Right, come on now Emma!!!!

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 18:42
Love hold for Emma to start the 1st set. 1-0.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 19:05
All on serve at 3-3. Emma has had a chance or two to break but the Chinese player has found her game again and it's really tough to see who will win the match. They are both playing some very good tennis right now.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 19:13
4-4 after a really tough hold for Wang. However, Emma appears to picked up an injury in her right upper thigh so that could be a problem.

Emma *0-30 and this is the business end of the 3rd set and match.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 19:15
Emma has called for the trainer having just been broken.
Wang will serve for the match at *5-4 in the 3rd.

JAMES4578
09-11-2021, 19:16
Unfortunate to pick up the injury after a great fightback, though the 3rd was nip and tuck. Wang breajs to love for 5-4.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 19:20
Emma assessed and having a 3 minute MTO

Jane

5-5

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 19:30
Despite being clearly in pain Raducanu has broken bacck for 5-5 in the 3rd set.
However, if she goes on to win will she be fit to play in the QF???
I think her Mum is there so that might be spurring her on to a win.

JAMES4578
09-11-2021, 19:33
Whatever happens at least Emma proving gutsy.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 19:35
Rabbits. Wang has broken again and will have another chance to serve for the match.

Sallydaisy
09-11-2021, 19:40
Wang wins 6'1, 6'7(0), 7'5 and will play Riske in the QF

Such a shame for Emma who was really coming back into the match when she picked up the injury. She played really really well but Wang had a game plan and stuck to it.

RosieBear
09-11-2021, 19:43
Real pity Emma picked up a niggle at a crucial time and when she had some momentum but these things happen. Great match that didn't deserve the dark cloud, but well done to Wang, she played brilliantly and hope she has a good run here.

JAMES4578
09-11-2021, 19:47
A real pity as otherwise whilst not guaranteed looked like Emma could well have turned that her way. Mind you not the best of starts, even if Wang was inspired.

Looks like Torben Beltz is Emma's new coach.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/59220748
From Simon Briggs who broke the story:

Simon Briggs@simonrbriggs· (https://twitter.com/simonrbriggs)13h (https://twitter.com/simonrbriggs/status/1458010537254588416)
Torben Beltz, the experienced German coach who just split with Angelique Kerber, looks like the next appointment for Raducanu after being spotted with her in south-east London last month
https://pbs.twimg.com/card_img/1458010441834287107/TDHtRg5R?format=jpg&name=small

Emma Raducanu on Torben Beltz: "You guys cracked it! It's obviously a great privilege to be working with such an experienced coach. I'm definitely very excited to work with him throughout the preseason and into next year"

Sallydaisy

Emma has been invited to become a member of the AELTC at Wimbledon.
She'll be the youngest player to have that honour and one of the few invitees
who have not won a title at the Annual Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships.
It's because she won the USO, setting so many records already.

It's a very good move by Mr Wimbledon because it means Emma can practice privately (and away from the press) whenever she wants at the varied courts on offer there - indoor and outdoor. So, in a way they are doing their bit to nurture her talent. Andy uses the facilities there a lot - he's earned his place with those 2 Wimbledon wins.

Comment from the Tennis Podcast on Twitter:

Rybakina a big-hitting, Tour-ready player who is match-tough after reaching the final in Adelaide. Raducanu’s first match of the year - being rocked back by the weight of shot, and not reacting in time.
+ Emma out of action/practice etc after contracting Covid before Christmas.
It all adds up ... as does the weight of expectation
... and that she's now a target for all those other players who've slogged for years
and never won a Grand Slam, let alone a WTA title even in their 20's ...

RosieBear
11-01-2022, 10:42
Oh dear, poor Emma, a total beatdown. But c'est la vie, just going through the rites of passage in a different order and paying her dues after a mega win. She'll be fine.

Sallydaisy
11-01-2022, 10:42
That's it for Emma until the AO next week.
Rybakina wins 6-0, 6-1.
The Brit had started to find some answers and win a few more points in the 2nd set.
Really needs to practice a lot over the next few days and rebuild stamina.

suttontennis
11-01-2022, 11:14
Thinks it's time for her to immerse herself completely in the tour, ignore the media and all the outside attention that comes with being a GS champion, and find out if this is what she wants to do.

Sallydaisy
11-01-2022, 12:01
It probably doesn't help that she has a new coach to contend with either.
He's probably wanting to make some changes to whatever it was helped her win all those matches last year so there's going to be a bumpy ride in more ways than one!

Focus is probably what's needed and try not to get downhearted at the losses!

cazza99
11-01-2022, 12:05
She is also not playing in lower tier events against much lower ranked players so not being able to get into the winning zone and build her confidence up.

But then many critics said it would take her a year or two to develop, so we should not be expecting much this year anyway.

And had covid not long ago. Pulled out of Melbourne because not physically ready, so today's score no surprise all things considered.

She's made it very clear many times that tennis is her passion and priority, just takes time.

JAMES4578
11-01-2022, 15:44
obviously Emma on a learning curve and tough match up, however the manner of defeat was disappointing. However need to bear in mind she did have covid not so long ago. Whilst not expecting too much at the Australian Open at least she will not have a top 30 player in her opening match but will still have a fair bit of pressure. Whilst it will take some time hopefuly can find some form and confidence with new coach in due course.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/talksport.com/sport/tennis/1024277/emma-raducanu-behaviour-sloane-stephens-australian-open/amp/ think Sloane's comments are rather unnecessary. There's nothing wrong with Emma showing emotion and commitment, even on the first point. Maybe Sloane isn't the sort to do the same, but I can't imagine she hasn't faced this before,

Just watched Emma's press conference. Very mature, as you would expect. Apparently some of her team didn't want her to play. Said she's not been hitting forehands or serves in practice, to try and save hand for matches.
Said she hit more sliced forehands today than in the past 2 or 3 years and said she learned that it's "not so bad"!!
edit - it's her own sliced forehand she was talking about - not sliced forehands in general.

Emma was so brave playing through that degree of pain. And her ability to improvise and keep it so close was very impressive, especially given her inexperience. That was the first full match of Emma's I have seen since the US Open and although disappointed she did not serve it out, there was a lot there that has made me optimistic for the future. I was listening with a very experienced Portuguese tennis commentator who said it was certainly the best women's match he had seen this year in Indian Well's and was definitely of a high standard. I think once Emma has thirty plus matches on tour and 1 or 2 seasons' experience, she will come through such matches more often than not and know how the rhythms of such matches better and know how to play the clutch points. Remember she has very little experience of the ebbs of flows of three-set matches. So all in all, still a lot of good signs for the future!

Emma Raducanu says she has been struggling with a stiff back the last few days. “Just gotta get stronger,” she says, but thinks she’ll be fine for Miami. (from Russell Fuller BBC report).

Sallydaisy

Some of Emma's post match comments from the BBC Sport section.
It should be noted that she nearly didn't participate at Indian Wells because of her back pain.

Raducanu meanwhile told BBC Sport she has been struggling with a stiff back for the last few days and "was pretty tired".

But the world number 13 says she should be fit to play at the Miami Open from 21 March. "I think it's just part of not playing and having so much stop start and having five, six days to prepare for matches and then playing at that intensity," she said. "It was a tough one not being able to serve full out so I was having to work so hard just to hold. I've just got to get stronger. "I've had it for the last few days, just a product of training hard and probably the last match was pretty intense too and it didn't settle down. "When you are crossing your fingers to hold serve every time, it's tough. I couldn't really drive up and I was kind of struggling to turn and reach. The margins were so small.

"I should be good for Miami, for sure."

Really good effort by Emma. Most Iga has been pushed in a long time, she looked quite flustered at times, Emma couldn't quite take her chances though. Iga is Emma but 1 year ahead - slam champion from nowhere, retrospectively learning the ropes and building up, then it comes together again. On the whole, it is good. She has been playing at a much better level in these clay tournaments. Yes it would be good if she could go deeper but... I would rather she gets there not too quickly as she is learning how to play on the circuit. She had the amazing slam experience and now she is starting to make inroads into tournaments. Slowly surely wins the race as she gets that tour experience. Because then she will push through matches like this one as it is just a case of a few clutch points here and there and learning how to get them at the end of a hard third set. :)

The recent past has been marked by first time ladies GS winners being unable to carry this on - Ostapenko, Kenin, Andreescu all struggled with the expectation or with injuries. So it's no surprise given the circumstances of Emma's victory that less than a year on she is dealing with the same sort of thing. I think then when she stops being referred to as a current GS champion winner, stops being prime time on the show courts, is 'yesterday's news', then she can get on with being 'Emma Radacanu - tennis player'.

Hopefully, but Pegula will be a real test

So Pegula wins 7-5 6-4. Playing like the top ten player she is against Emma who is a future top ten player - in terms of week in week out play. This was far more encouraging in many ways than the previous two rounds. Second only top ten match if I remember correctly and the good news is Emma showed the potential she has and what is missing (court awareness, dealing with lobs, court placement of shots e.g. when reaching a drop shot, better movement to the sides etc.) is only not there because of her development and current experience. It is incredible how good she is considering how much obvious growth there is to be made. So a defeat but a step forward in terms of experience gained. :)

Emma seems to get so many injuries and retirements, I hope that it isn’t a resilience issue.

It’s a shame Dmitry Tursunov has opted not to continue working with Emma Raducanu, but Jez Green - who is still with Dominic Thiem - will be guiding her physical training over the next couple of months

Yes and I find the appointment of Jez Green very positive and hope he can work out what she should and should not be doing at her stage of career and age in terms of fitness and training and whether that will reduce her injuries in 2023.

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/63409782)- Emma Raducanu: Dmitry Tursunov says 'red flags' convinced him to end coaching trial

"I could have stuck around, I could have agreed on everything that her team proposed, but, deep down, I felt like that wasn't the right thing to do," said Tursunov, who previously helped Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka break into the world's top 10 and now works with Switzerland's Olympic champion and world number 13 Belinda Bencic.

"She's absolutely great, she's a hard worker and she doesn't think or act like she's a superstar," Tursunov said of Raducanu. "She is hungry to improve and is obsessed with tennis. It's quite a rare combination.

"So I really loved working with her, and I really wanted to make it work. It was a very difficult decision for me to walk away from a player that I like and respect.

"I felt it was going to be an interesting project. I was really hoping to find a solution to continue, but, in the end, we just couldn't agree on the terms so I had to leave."

Emma has a new coach - Sebastian Sachs - who coached Bencic last year. Interestingly, Tursunov who coached Emma this year is now coaching Bencic.

I've just seen Emma has retired injured during her second round match in Auckland against Viktoria Kuzmova. Was it her wrist again?

She had rolled her left ankle, had it taped, tried to continue but then retired.

Oh no. Poor Emma. This is what the BBC has to say about it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/64171976

I've done that a few times in the past. But, I put a very cold flannel around the ankle to help the swelling go down and tried not to walk on it until it got a lot better.

Very different situation with Emma though - lots of different problems. Players were complaining about the condition of the courts in the wet weather in Auckland.

Although Emma lost today against Coco Gauff, the match made me very excited for her future.

She showed real power and shot making against somebody, all being well, she may well go up against many times in major events.
There were a lot of 10, 12, 14, 16 shot rallies where she was fine until Gauff got the ball back once again and she went wide or long.
Gauff is also a very fine athlete and you could tell Emma had not come into the tournament as prepared as she would have been after turning her ankle.

Emma needs to work on her conditioning and her durability.
But the shot making is there. No, this is not once of those "flash in a pan" stories I believe. She will get there and stay there, as long as she can remain injury free, or reasonably so.
Lots of reasons for optimism!

Yes overall it was an encouraging performance in the circumstances though the big points went Gauff's way. The injuries have been a concern but hopefully fitter this season and all being well can find a higher level consistently at some point. Many critics on social media mind you.

I think she played well and you could see the Emma from her big win, just seemed to over hit when it mattered and she was wanting them too much.
