In Andy's interview with Annabel Croft (transcript in News thread) he says that Brad only worked with Kei until Wimbledon 2011. However, it'd be surprising if the 2 of them didn't have a conversation about Andy's game ahead of the Quarter-Final on Wednesday!

Thanks Sallydaisy, that was my train of thought also!:)

If Andy is on top form it won't matter how many people Kei talks to!

Afternoon all.
Didnt manage to wake up in time for beginning of this match going to bed at 5am bad idea!
Looks like Novak is crushing hewitt as expected, Andy is going to have up his level somewhat to beat Novak this year it seems.

Little fight back from Hewitt, won last 3 games to level at 3-3 in 3rd set.

JAMES4578
23-01-2012, 13:01
Probably too late to have much impact but at least Hewitt's not going down meekly in the 3rd when he could so easily have been demoralised. Looks like Nole's completely controlled thius match though didn't think Lleyton would really be able to test him.

DaveArneRiise
23-01-2012, 13:17
Hewitt serving for the 3rd set at 5-4. Deuce. Phenomenal effort this from Hewitt.

BP Djokovic though!

Saved.

Set point Hewitt now!

He takes it! Great stuff this.

Hewitt has just taken the 3rd set! There are some things that people usually don't like about him but his mental approach to the game should be taught to everyone!

two more sets left in him??? I wouldnt write him off just yet!

Sallydaisy

Hero Hewitt strikes!!! 6'4 in the 3rd set.
Nole still ahead 2-1 (6'1, 6'3, 4'6) but he's got to play another hour out there ......

JAMES4578
23-01-2012, 13:22
Somewhat against the odds, well done Lleyton! Of course Hewitt always been such a fighter and at least he's put Nole under some pressure. Really wish I could watch this right now! He must maintain his level at the start of the 4th though.

dewster99
23-01-2012, 13:27
That is massive in terms of the tournament. Nole doesn't seem so untouchable now and now an extra set for no reason at all. Pity it's not in the heat of the day

The Last 8 .....

[1]Djokovic v [5]Ferrer
[4]Murray v [24]Nishikori
[11]Del Potro v [3]Federer
[7]Berdych v [2]Nadal

Thanks Sally, love the Taz! :taz:

It's a really strong quarter-final lineup this year. All will be very interesting matches I'm sure.

Looking forward to Del Potro/Federer tomorrow - Delpo's looked in very good form this tournament so he's got a good chance tomorrow I think.

JAMES4578
23-01-2012, 15:17
Pity Hewitt couldn't quite keep the momentum going but certainly a great effort from him to put Nole under some pressure and even if Djokovic is, I think, the clear favourite he is maybe not invincible.

Gotta love Hewitt's spirit and passion. Happy he managed to take at least a set from Djoko.

Disappointed Sabine couldn't take out Shazza. What a noise that woman makes. Inhuman.

ESPN interviewed Lendl and it was fun. Brad and Pat Mac riibbing him. He said that it's a huge pleasure to work with Andy and that his goal for the entire year is to win a grand slam. But he deflected the question Pat asked him about dealing with Andy's mentality but said if Andy yells at him in the player's box he will yell back.

I think Delpo has a really good chance against Smugfed - at least it should be competitive. Could even be that we have a Delpo/Berdy semi on that side of the draw.

Leyton's gutsy performance let everyone see that Djoko is not invincible - a good message to send to the locker room. Let's hope Daveed takes him to 5 sets!

watching this match noone will beat nole on this form, not andy not anyone
Not wishing to prejudice anything, but beforehand I thought Andy would have to win two or three GSs in one this time round.
First get to the second week. Then deal with the Monfils Tsonga train. OK that has opened up. Not underestimating Ken by the way.

Then the real tournament begins and Andy simply has to play better than he has ever played to match Nole.

Then ...... he has to keep it going for another match.
If he can get through Ken in straights and have everything left in the tank, and the serving is great, he is moving well, he is confident, and Nole is not quite 100%, then we have a match to record for years to come.

My excitement at the appointment of Mr Lendl has always been tempered by this.

Put simply, Andy has to find another level to his play. For point after point after game after game after set after set

PS I do not think Daveed can hurt Nole enough to take sets of Nole, but hopefully he can grind Nole down a bit like he did last year to Andy.

-J-
23-01-2012, 18:55
If you had to hand select a player for nole to play before Andy, then the ferret would feature high on the list of contenders. he will run every ball down and make nole win every point. nole fitness has been a lot better lately but it wouldn't do any harm for him to have the run around before a potential match with Andy

Oh ye of little faith ;) - since when has Andy had to rely on Nole being below par to beat him? When he's playing his best he can beat anyone. Why can't this be the year that Andy does a Nole? After the WTF last year I didn't rate Nole at all and thought he'd never win another slam or get to #1. I think Andy's sole problem lies between his ears (ok and holding serve more consistently would help) and Mr Lendl has played a blinder, backing Nole to win the tournament. All pressure off Andy - his coach doesn't expect him to win and so he may not expect himself to win and that may be just what's needed to allow him to play lights out tennis. No expectation from anyone. Also, his mum has gone home, and I believe his dad is leaving Thursday - it would be a "trust that to happen" situation if he won just when they weren't there to see it.

It was a wish list pabbers - I want him to win that GS so much - and if you look at my last line the spirit is exactly that of "Andy doing a Nole". Nole at his best last year was Nole at a new level and if that Nole appears on court against Andy (and this is tempting fate because there is still another match first) then Andy will have to play his best, and possibly best ever tennis. The fact I have been following Andy for years shows I do have faith that that is possible. Andy still has another gear left in him and I think he himself believes that and so do I. I think you might have taken two or three of my words and given the whole text the wrong interpretation.

The Last 8 ..... and how 'tough' was it for them to reach the 1/4 Finals .....
(no of sets) and here's who they beat - [ranking]. Top 32 i.e. seeded, 33-64, 65-100, 100-200

[5]Ferrer (14 sets) - Machado[70], Sweeting[68], 27Chela[29], 17Gasquet[18]
[1]Djokovic (13 sets) - Lorenzi[109], Giraldo[56],Mahut[81], Hewitt[181]
Nole has played 2 guys ranked 100-200, 1 from the 80s and 1 from the 32-64

[24]Nishikori (17 sets) - Robert [106], Ebden [94], Benneteau [39], 6Tsonga[6]
[4]Murray (12 sets) - Harrison [77], ERV [101], Llodra [46],Kukushkin [91]
Andy has faced 1 guy in the top 50 and 3 from the 70-100 moreorless (since ERV is 101)

[11]Del Potro (12 sets) - Mannarino[91], Kavcic[103], Lu[79],Kohlschreiber[41]
[3]Federer (10 sets) - Kudryavtsev[172], Beck[93]w/o, Karlovic[57], Tomic[38]
Federer has had a logical progression from the ranks starting at 172 to 38.

[7]Berdych (14 sets) - Ramos[67], Rochus[54], 30Anderson[32], 10Almagro[10]
[2]Nadal (12 sets) - Kuznetsov[167], Haas[190], Lacko[119], 18Lopez[19]
Rafa has beaten 3 guys outside the top 100 and 1 of the lower seeds.
Overall Berdy might have had the best prep in terms of experience by having to beat 2 seeds.

I'm really hopeful for Andy this AO. For once he can play without media pressure -unless I've missed it there've been no articles about this AO being his - Lendl has said Nole will win it, and both his parents will not be there. Andy has been playing brilliantly so far - there's been no loss of concentration and best of all no berating himself on court - so fingers crossed he will at last achieve his dream. He also seems very calm and relaxed and as tho he's enjoying himself on court.

LET'S GO ANDY. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Me neither - I can think of at least 3 guys who could! If Rafa gets through then that will be a major test for Federer.

I'm sad for Delpo but he's had a good tournament - back in the top 10 and a slam QF is a good result. He's made great progress after his injury and I'm sure he'll continue to improve.

Federer was really impressive - very high level of play from him.

No second-set style wobble this time. Federer is merciless in dispatching Del Potro and as the players exchange a matey embrace at the net, they are almost chuckling over the winner's superiority, like it is a force of nature neither of them are to blame for.

Sallydaisy
24-01-2012, 09:58
It's turning into a tussle out there - into a tie-break in set 1 and 5-5 on points with Rafa serving.
Berdy breaks to serve at *6-5 - and takes it on the first point.
He leads 1-0.

Rafa starts serving in the 2nd set ..... he's got a lot to do.

Berdych takes the 1st. What do you think, was Rafa too late to challenge the previous ball?

david1610
24-01-2012, 10:02
And Birdy gets it. Am not seeing every point as I have to do some work and my stream keeps cutting out - the idea is to watch this kind of point, but there you go...

Of course there is a scenario where Birdy and Rafa rough each other up so much that even somebody like Rafa is softened up for Roger, and, if they come through their QFs, Nole and Andy do the same thing to each other, and Roger reaps the benefits. I did previously say that the winner from the top four could be the one who gets to the final the "least damaged" and this still may be the case!

Berdych takes the 1st. What do you think, was Rafa too late to challenge the previous ball?

He looked to the line caller before challenging then did so immediately when no call came so the challenge should have been allowed. It's a good system that needs clarity and consistency. At the moment it is just causing confusion.

Certainly seems as if it was a very tight set but Berdy is obviously confident. There could be plenty of mileage left in this though!

I think it's only 1 break of serve?
In the first 4 games Rafa has held twice and broken once, Berdy held just once = 3-1.

Rafa has held again for 4-1.

Only following on Livescoreboard as I'm catching up with other things and working as well.

Rafa was 5-2 up, then Berdy held and broke Rafa when he was serving for the set at *5-3.
Berdy held again for 5-5 and Rafa has just held his serve for 6'5.
Could be another tie-break?

Sallydaisy

Tie-break it is - now watching with one eye on the laptop (American commies - eek!) and Berdy is really taking his chances whereas Rafa has faltered from being 5-2 up!

This is not conducive to getting work done!

Rafa up 4-1 after getting a break at the 2nd point on Berdy's serve.

It was close, but Rafa hadn't challenged by the time Berdych played his shot. In fact, he started to move towards the next shot before his hand went up. Tough call, but I think it was probably correct.

I agree David.
Trouble is that the matches on the other courts were all over some time ago and it's probably they've only got a couple of full sets of court officials left to cover the matches on RLA i.e. 9 games on, 9 games off. So, they can't just put the guys onto another court even MCA; which is a shame because the Bryans v the Poles is probably not going to start until at least midnight in OZ - and probably to an empty arena!

Well if the officials are waiting to officiate the doubles, can't they move to another court just as easily as the players? Problem would be the spectators, I would have thought. But at this rate of play the doubles will not have many spectators anyway!

Is that how it works though?
I thought they had teams assigned to a particular court to do 'shifts' i.e. so many games, swop and swop until the match is done and then they stay with that court?
So, the ones assigned to MCA might no longer be there and the ones assigned to RLA have to continue duties on that one.

Madeline

Unfortunately, Delpo isn't properly back to form yet - this was just a match too far for him. Smugfed played well but the standard of Delpo's play made Fed look better than he was - that didn't stop the commies eulogising though!

I think I'm really going off the AO. I was thinking yesterday (and of course there was another example today) that the tournament has been marred by poor line calls, poor umpire decisions and bad sportsmanship. And on top of that, I'm doing really, really badly in all the comps!!!! :rolling:

Alis
24-01-2012, 21:24
I agree Linda, the umpiring has been noticeable poorer than usual at the AO. I hadn't realised until recently that there was a dispute with the umpires but I really think it's time for the powers that be to get round the table with the senior umpires before RG - we have certainly missed their presence here. A lot of the bad sportsmanship has stemmed from bad umpiring decisions.

Nole has always been good at hamming it, he just hasn't needed to of late so we've forgotten.
He did the same thing against Hewitt - seemed to tweak his ankle or leg then went walkabout and let Hewitt get ahead in the set but never called the trainer.
So either he's come in with an injury he knows the trainer can't help with, or its a bit of the psychosomatics coming back again.

Still think it's going to be a tough match for Andy - hate to say it but we could be looking at a repeat of the US Open where Andy plays a massive match in the semi's to come through against Fed in the final who's going to be a day fresher.

Rafa isn't looking anywhere near 100%, I just hope he's got enough to take Fed to a long match and then set up my dream scenario where Andy beats Fed in his first slam final, fair and square after taking out the world no1 on the way, and shut him up for good.

Rafa isn't looking anywhere near 100%, I just hope he's got enough to take Fed to a long match and then set up my dream scenario where Andy beats Fed in his first slam final, fair and square after taking out the world no1 on the way, and shut him up for good.

We can dream but even Lendl's not expecting Andy to go beyond the semis. Not sure if my nerves would be up to another final against Fed.....

Oh, ye of little faith! That may be what Lendl is saying - what he thinks may well be quite a different thing - Lendl is famed for his subterfuge! As far as Novak's histrionics are concerned - the injury that so often appears when he is not totally in command is a safety net IMO - then if he loses he can say, 'Well, you could see that I was injured!' I wouldn't mind betting that if he had lost the second set the trainer would have been on PDQ!

Yep Lendl should be playing in the Superbowl with his blocking skills.
I think taking the attention away from Andy could be the single most important thing he's done for him so far

Didn't realise Rafa v Humble is tomorrow, thats such an absolute joke scheduling one Semi the day before the other, where is the fairness in that?

Its an absolute joke, C'MON RAFA.

RoastLamb
25-01-2012, 21:12
Yeah, they should have both semis on the same day. Not fair. I mean, they do that with the ladies. Fed always gets a break.

As much as I admire Ferru's tenacity I really find watching him play a tad boring. He lacks the creativity in Djoko's game so cannot quite compete at that level. But Andy has tons of creativity and so that should come in handy next match.

But if both semis were tomorrow, Andy and Nole would have had to play QF and SF on successive days! Seems more sense to do it this way, with both finalists getting at least one day between every match - but the Wimbledon way is best, with both halves of the draw coming together on the 2nd Monday. (And anything's better than the US Open with the final the day after the [last] semi, especially when the semis end up on different days due to the weather).

SamP
25-01-2012, 21:40
No no, just play both semi's on the Friday, I don't see much of an advantage for one side of the draw to have 2 days rest between quarters and semi's rather than a 2 day rest between semi and final.

Make sense? haha

John Lloyd Quote: "I think it's going to be a Djokovic v Nadal final but I would love Roger Federer to get through. He's such a class act."

Basically sums up that generation of ex-british players, I hope Scotland leave britain just so that those 'pundits' officially don't have to pretend to support 'Murray the British number one'. Aargh.

True. Although one side of the Ladies draw do have to play their QF and SF on successive days, but then they only play 3 sets! ;)

and the players playing against each other get the same rest as thier opponent in the resoective semis , then everyone gets two days off before the final

What happens at RG?They have a 2 hour lunch meeting, several bottles of wine, some strong coffee and cigarettes, and then decide they'll worry about the schedule tomorrow

Both men semis on same day at RG. Just looking at last year OOP RG, it got 2 quarters one day and next 2 quarters next day, then 1st quarters day get 2 day off before semis and 2nd day quarters get 1 day off before semis.

There are actually 3 of us confirmed tennis fans - but alas I suspect they are going to launch us full tilt into prep for our next exam in March (media law/court reporting) and step up the squiggle (shorthand) intensity. Sigh. I think I might just have to wander into Watford town centre for a Maccy D now. #justified
