Pity about the rain delay at 4 all, some effort from Nadal to hold there.

4 hours 30 minutes. That makes 9 hours 20 minutes and counting for Nole's SF and F.

Whatever else happens, after the AO I think the top 4 should issue a joint statement saying they are not prepared to play a GS final where one player has just one day of rest.

Ditto - I was making headway with the crosswords until those last few games!
At least it HAS livened up and I'm glad it's gone to a 5th - I think Nole will tire quicker than Rafa.

JAMES4578
29-01-2012, 13:29
Nadal takes the 4th which didn't like likely not so long ago with a gritty diisplay, but Nole faltered somewhat. The 5th should be interesting!

i knew my boy rafa would not just sit down and 'die'
he willed himself to that 4th set
and yes, im going to say it, i wish andy did that when he had 3 bps in the 5th against djok.

Definitely david, the finals are only going to get closer its totally unfair that 1 player should have an advantage,it should be completely level playing field, the us open is the most ridiculous. Can't they all just follow wimbers!lol

Yes, Nole's mental strength could get him through four sets after the SF, but the effect of that and Rafa having had one extra day must surely kick in at some point. Not to mention Rafa will be starting to believe after the fourth and knowing that his fighting qualities come to fore in the fifth.

And while they are at it.... in rain effected tournaments both semi finals should start at the same time. In the event of a location having one enclosed roofed court, and rain returning, matches should be transferred to it to complete.

Don't know about you all but I really want Rafa to win for a change.

I generally want Rafa to win, except against one or two favourite players (eg, oooh I dunno, maybe Andy Murray ;)) but today is slightly odd - I intended to support Novak and thought that was what I'd be doing, but very early on I suddenly realised I was supporting Rafa :)

I often find that in matches where I'm fairly neutral - I assume I'll be supporting one player, then find I'm actually supporting the other sub-consciously!

They did play best of 5 at the WTA season ending championships at one point (from 1984-1998) and there were a few 5 setters. Seles beating Sabatini was one of the best ones. Thin k it would be fine to have it in slam finals.

Wow. I don't know how on earth Nole did that!

In the second half of the 5th set, he looked like his legs had gone completely - both left and right legs buckled under him on more than one occasion - but he still forced himself to come through. It was like his legs had gone to jelly, but he just said no, you will do what I tell you to.

Gutted for Rafa, but gotta say - awesome from Nole!!

This bit was brilliant! The players were clearly exhausted, but Steve Healy was determined to do the whole speech regardless. Part way through, the cameras were focused on him, and there was a ripple of applause - he paused slightly and said "thank-you" but the applause was not for him - it was for whichever unseen person brought on a couple of chairs for Rafa and Nole to sit on.

The same chap then handed over bottles of water - and nice to see Nole passed the first one over to Rafa before taking one for himself.

The whole match, and the speeches have just been examples of class!

Great speeches, Rafa and Novaks expression when the Kia man said 'so what makes the australian open so special...' after ranting for 5 minutes, priceless.

Really incredible match, such athletes, but I don't think it was the best ever. Not enough net play for me, Andy's semi was more exciting, this was more of a baseline battle to the death.

Poor Rafa.

Jan
29-01-2012, 15:43
Saw most of the 4th and 5th sets. Just don't know how Djoko, particularly, stayed upright! Felt for them during the speeches ("I WILL have my say - I've prepared it so I'll jolly well saying it!") The Australian especially seems to go overboard with the sponsor stuff.
Anyway, credit to both players. Yet another great advert for the sport. Having not seen all the match, or all the semi (yet), I tend to agree with SamP above - there was just that hint of subtlety about some of the points in the semi, not totally brute force as the final seemed to be.
Nice to note that the score in the 5th set was the same in both matches - does that make Andy equal to Rafa???!!;)
I'm excited about the coming season - bring it on!!!

What an amazing match! I'm exhausted just from watching it. In the fourth set I was resigned to Rafa losing, but when he went a break up in the fifth I really thought he would win. I bet he is kicking himself over that missed dtl shot which led to Nole getting the break back. But he can take heart that he is on the right track towards beating Nole, as there were really only a couple of points between them.

Sorry to add this, but perhaps in contrast to popular opinion, and my own, I thought Mr Castle and Mr Lloyds commentary over the last 3 days put into to comparison just how bad Eurosport's is.

Normally I'd agree with you, but for Andy's semi we tried the Beeb and quickly got so put off we actually switched to Eurosport! Couldn't believe I was actually choosing to listen to Mats, but there you go.

After that, we watched both finals on Eurosport too. More Frew than Mats, who's also bad but at least has the redeeming feature of a pretty good turn-of-phrase at times.

Yeah totes agree... my bestest tennis bud was over (haven't seen her since she left for Uni as a mature student) so this is the closest either of us will get to tennis this year with school.
She was cheering Rafa on all the way and when Nole totally mufffed that overhead, she screamed "YES" and I screamed "NO" and then we both collapsed laughing.
THAT'S how tennis should be watched! Opposing views but one thing in common... and able to call out our frustrations with our favourites' play - makes a change from giggling at Wimbledon with that annually occurring breed: Casualis Britiscus Tennisfanii ... only seen for two weeks in June/July... and then never seen again!

Not sure how I feel. Some of you seem to think Rafa beating Nole is a good thing for Andy. I can't help think it just makes him invincible in their eyes and gives him huge confidence to repeat the success of last season. At least if beaten here, it would be clear it's possible to beat him given how close Andy came to it on Friday. But now it just seems like no matter what anyone does, he's going to come out on top. I also wanted to see the huge GS winner ranking points spread more evenly among the top players. So Nole not winning would have been a good start.

Anyway, Rafa played a pretty amazing match but needs to get up on the baseline more and also crowd Nole's second serve more, even if he misses a few. When Andy was playing he did that and the commie said that even when he missed, it sent out a message that he was going to attack and I'm sure that's what drew the poorer serving out of Nole. Rafa is not renowned for his returning so I think maybe Nole appeared to be serving better than he was today because he didn't feel under quite the same pressure as he did against Andy.

Please don't let Nole have a 2012 like 2011. Andy will make great strides I'm sure, so hopefully he'll stop him in his tracks next time they meet, wherever, whenever!

I never thought I would say this but I have to agree that the Castle/Lloyd commentary was preferable to Wilander. Just shows you how poor the choice is though! What's happened to Petch and Fleming and even the dreaded Cowan?

It was a great pity either player had to lose that match. Rafa must be devastated. Perhaps he will take comfort from how close he came but I very much doubt it. If he doesn't win the French do you think it's possible that he might do a Borg?

Always watch on Eurosport. Yes, Mats is bad (especially during the Nadal V Fed match) but I can never stand the Beeb commies after the things they have said in the past about Andy.
Mats is probably better as a studio pundit as opposed to a commentator.

What a brilliant final, don't know how the players managed to stay upright at the end
( specially Nole after his previous 5 setter, the man is a machine):clap::clap:
Well done to both with Nole just getting the edge, can't wait for the year ahead:yahoo:
As for the BBC comentary I will say nothing
Actually i will wasn't as bad as usual or maybe i was so into the match I zoned out LOL

What a brilliant final :):)

At least Wilander said later on today that the best match of the championship had been Andy vs Nole.

Yeah, I think Andy's match was much more scintillating. I was actually a bit bored with today's match until the last two sets.

for what it's worth now, the beeb had the 5live commentary as an option - pat cash, jonathan overend, j bates, elkins - interesting i thought

Well done to Nole. Hats off to him, didn't think he could pull it off after his 5 hour match with Andy. Impressive stuff.

BBC TV coverage with 5 live commentary .... bliss!
Totally agree, I watched on the Red Button but listen to 5live commentary, I thought it would be distracting but it was not, I turned volume down. I cannot bear Castle voice,, he drives me insane.

I tried doing that but they were a bit out of sync.

I have also turned down commentators but it is so annoying as I like to listen to the ball strike.

I know they said this was the longest final, but it would be interesting to know how long they were actually playing and how long they spent between points. These two are notoriously slow, as we know.

Don't forget the rain delay

Surely the match time doesn't include the rain delay?

It does - it was (only) 10 minutes or so

Always watch on Eurosport. Yes, Mats is bad (especially during the Nadal V Fed match) but I can never stand the Beeb commies after the things they have said in the past about Andy.
Mats is probably better as a studio pundit as opposed to a commentator.Sorry, don't agree. Mats is one-sided, adores Federer to the point of ignoring that he's waning, loves Nole, is insulting about Andy and as a commie is quite pathetic. I could go on but think I've said all this before. The BBC commies are just what we expect from tennis has beens and no-marks.

I thought Castle and Lloyd were marginally less bad this time around. Maybe all the complaints have registered.

The best commies surely are the Tennis TV guys (Robbie Koening?? and ??). They have a lot of respect for all of the top 4 and call it as they see it ON THE DAY.

The tennistv guys are pretty awesome - RK and Jason Goodall. Not so much the American commies but you can't have everything.

I really liked how classy Rafa was in his acceptance speech. If that had been Federer I'm sure he'd have been rolling around the floor in floods of tears.

John Lloyd and Andrew Castle actually said some complimentary things about Andy for once! I nearly fell of the sofa.

What a match!! Can't believe I spent 6 hours yesterday watching tennis!! Novak beat my 2 favourite players in back to back brutal matches so I ought to hate him for that .... but I've gotta hand it to you Nole, you are one awesome tennis player :clap::clap:

As for the commies, I totally agree that Mats is uber annoying ... I thought it was just me so glad to hear others feel the same. He just won't shut up and let us w:grrr:atch the tennis :grrr:

I watched on the BBC and it was definately the better option. Did try red button but then lost HD. At least they were complimentary about Andy for a change and Lloyd even said he will win a GS which I don't remember him ever saying before!

I agree with you Caro - 2 x 5-setters like that, he was obviously exhausted midway through the final set (on both occasions) but he found it from somewhere. What a Champion :trophy: Well Done Novak.

When I think of these footballers that have to be rested if they play more than one 90 minute match in a week I have to laugh. No doubt about it - Tennis players and cyclists are the super athletes

If Andy had won the AO I was going to put bet on him winning Sports Personality - even though it's an Olympic year. Maybe I will anyway!

Agree with your post Caro. It was a bit sad watching 2 favourite players being beaten in marathons by Nole.:crying: Not sure how he does it but he deserves credit for his fantastic play. I too turned over to BBC and was surprised by Lloyd's comments. Bouncy still annoys me - master of the bleeding obvious!!:grrr: Five hours watching Andy and then six yesterday!!:excited: Stayed in bed until 1.30 today reading papers and no TV on. What a change from last fortnight.:)

I am really missing the AO today - think it was a fantastic tournament - some terrific matches even in the early rounds. Of course a huge part of the enjoyment was watching Andy progressing through the rounds to reach his 5th consecutive slam semi final . I guess we were all watching Andy even more carefully than usual to pinpoint the developments he and Ivan had made during this very early stage of their working relationship.
Roll on the next tournament

Bouncy actually prides himself on commentary for people who don't know too much about tennis ie. the wimby only crowd!! .... just makes it mega annoying for real fans!!

I am lost with no tennis to watch, roll on the FO although it is my least favourite. I envy you your lazy morning SG!! Back to work for me today and a 6am start! Home very soon though.

Aww missed so much just been trying to catch up on posts! Been ill since Friday but managed to watch a couple of sets of final and boy what a match - that is pure tennis class. Surpised at Nole winning have to idea where his stamina came from but Nadal was still pumping at the end shame there is only one winner.
Sad AO is over but nice to have normal sleeping pattern back!
Bring on the next tournament!
