I have just wasted three and a half hours of my life watching, or rather listening (I had to spend most of it with my hands over my eyes due to the flashing lights) to Eurovision. Most of the songs were rubbish. Ours was particularly awful. And surely Turkey and Ireland must have been joking with their entries? And when it came to the judging, most of the countries just voted for their neighbours!

Been watching Bert & Dickie on BBC this evening - about the 1948 Olympic double-sculls team - absolutely brilliant, except we had two power cuts part way through :grrr:

We were watching a recording of it, about about 30 minutes behind live - the first interruption wasn't too critical, but the second was at a really key moment, so we're going to have to record the repeat and watch the rest in a couple of days - so annoying as we were really enjoying it

It was really good wasn't it? (Won't say more and spoil anything!). Hope you enjoy the whole programme.
It was very well done and just shows how differently sport was approached 64yrs ago (not much different to the Chariots of Fire era). Can't imagine today's athletes coping on the sort of diet available to most at the time. Some very poignant moments too ...

I've watched a lot of TV this evening including the half hour round up of the torch relay round UK.

I'm just about to rewatch the closing ceremony that I taped on the American channel NBC last night. I want to see what their commentary was like compared to the Canadian one AND what they missed out.

RoastLamb
13-08-2012, 22:08
Well the Americans edited out the opening and final sequences. No The Who or ballet dancers or flame going out. Wow! The woman who performed in both opening and closing ceremonies - can't remember her name, begins with an E - she was also edited out.

Sallydaisy
13-08-2012, 22:12
Emeli Sande. She sang "Abide with me" in the opening ceremony and had 2 stints in the closing bit.

Did they show the Kate Bush bit "Running up that Hill"?
Can't believe they missed the flame going out ... pure pathos.
There was just a teensy few notes that sounded like the last post as it opened out before the flames went.

RoastLamb
14-08-2012, 00:02
No they didn't show Running up the Hill. I don't think they know who Kate Bush is in the states. What I did like and what the Canadian show didn't have was the commentary. For the most part they knew what was what. Oh I just realized they didn't show the 300+ boxes either. And they missed Ray Davies too. And Muse.

Tbh there have been hints in the first few episodes of this series about the 'beginning of the end of Camelot' so I'm not overly surprised. It couldn't really go on for years because the plot lines would have become too repetitive. But it's going to leave a big gap on a Saturday night ...

Ooh! So you will see the Club Tenis de Mallorca on TV. It's not very impressive. Just a few clay courts, a small building with changing rooms on the ground floor and a cafe & balcony on the first floor. Goes to show that throwing lots of money around is not the way to make top tennis players (take note, LTA).

I've just checked next week's Radio Times. It will be a brilliant week for those who like crime dramas. There are lots of TV crime drama series, most of them new series - Ripper Street, Lewis, Death in Paradise, Midsomer Murders, Silent Witness. And there is a spy thriller starting on BBC4 on Wednesday - Spies of Warsaw and a drama series about Mr Selfridge starting on Sunday.

These will be continuing during the weeks of the Oz Open and my Sky plus box is nearly full. I'll have to be glued to the telly most of the time

Yes we caught up with that a couple of days ago and enjoyed it too. Unlike The Poison Tree which we thought had a very disappointing and unsatisfactory ending. Still got the final part of Last Tango to watch.

Looking forward to Lewis and Death in Paradise. But I gather Lewis has been chopped down to 1 hour portions - so each is a 2 parter. Do people not have the staying power for a 2 hour stint any more? Or is this just a way of eking it out?

Borgen re-starts tomorrow too on BBC3 (or is it BBC4) - fantastic out of The Killing and The Bridge stable. We'll be glued to that again. Just waiting for The Good Wife to return at the end of the month too. There are a lot of holes to fill with the end of Merlin, Strictly, Boardwalk Empire (Sky Atlantic) and Downton.

Regarding Lewis - the future is unclear. I'd read in an interview that Kevin Whately hadn't 100% ruled out another episode or two but both he and Laurence Fox want a year 'off' (in Whately's case he's not working at all in 2013) and then review.
Article here. (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/4720415/Im-taking-a-year-off-I-may-quit-Lewis-for-good.html)

I thought Dancing on the Edge quite intriguing and a nice take on the 30's. It isn't overloaded with music but tells a good story although one which at times is shocking at how 'second class' citizens were treated then.

We have a "new" British show that started last week on PBS called Insp. Banks. I've read all the author Peter Robinson's books and the first episode kept very closely to the book but I think the actor is not quite how I envisaged him (felt the same way about Insp. Lynley too). The Downton Abbey series finished last night with Matthew's car crash. I knew he was going to die ages ago but I had no idea Lady Sybill would pop her clogs a few eps back - was quite :crying: when that happened. Also enjoying Ripper Street.

I thought that about DCI Banks too (that's what it's called over here).
Biggest problem for me was that the actor, Stephen Tomlinson, had been in very successful series called Wild at Heart which ran 7 series from 2006-2012. He played a big hearted veterinary surgeon, dedicated to wild animal causes, who worked on a small game reserve in Africa and it only finished around the time the Banks thing started so I couldn't really get that image of the actor out of mind.
I don't think Tomlinson has the 'grittiness' needed to play the Banks role, too soft a face IMHO.

I wasn't sure about Nathaniel Parker either as Lynley but I came to like him in it.

I don't know if you ever got a series called Cadfael? I'd really liked the books and was looking forward to the TV programme but they cast Derek Jacobi in the title role. I think he's a great actor but in the first programme I just felt he wasn't right as Cadfael - I'd envisaged someone more swarthy. By the 2nd series I'd got used to him and re-watching the DVD's think now that he was a good choice.

Sorry, yes, it is called DCI Banks. I remember ST from Ballykissangel. He's aged a bit since then. Not warmed to him - as yet.

I also liked NP but to me Lynley is blond not dark and swarthy. And the actress who played his wife, Helen, also wasn't right (imho).

I think the problem is that he's had 2 good roles in long-running series and is remembered for 1 or both of them and neither were 'tough cop' personas so I struggle to see him as that.

Hmmm after all that, not sure what to make of the first episode of GoT. Much of my uncertainty is explained and interestingly discussed in this great and informed evaluation:

Tonight's episode of Game of Thrones. Wow. I've been waiting for this episode since the dramatisation began and it was brilliantly done.

We have four "new" British mysteries on Cdn tv at the mo. One is called Inspector Gently and it's set in County Durham, I believe. Love it! Second one is also set in Northumberland called Vera. Love her sergeant - he is yummy and an authentic Geordie too. Third is called Scott and Bailey and stars the lass from Corrie St. Liking it A LOT!!! Fourth is Accused. Really gritty. Had Sean Bean last week playing a trannie. Now I've seen everything. :rolling:

They have been around over here for a while now. We have just had the third series (I think) of Scott and Bailey. But they are all really good :):)

We don't get anything over here the same time as the UK, always takes around 3 years to make it over the pond. Even the very popular Downton Abbey is six months later.

Yes I only read that bit over the weekend and was shocked - wondered who'd be left!! Couldn't tell Mr P as he hasn't read the book. He went to bed shocked last night. Glad they at least kept to the book (more or less) for that bit. Some changes have been irritating me I must admit.

They were great. I was a bit miffed that the BBC were not allowed to show the first hour, though. Mind you they were allowed to play the opening song last night on BBC2.

I thought I'd already posted about this, but if I did so it must have been on the wrong thread! Last Friday at my French class we watched an episode of a French TV programme - and it is being shown on Channel 4! It is Les Revenants - The Returned - and we all loved it. We saw episode 3 as the first two episodes were no longer available. So the next I day looked on YouTube to see if anyone had put them on there - and someone had uploaded all 8 episodes! And what's more, they had taken all the adverts out! :cheer: So I watched the first six episodes on YouTube and then watched episode 7 on the TV Sunday night. This Sunday will be the last in the current series. Sadly, it has now been taken down from YouTube due to copyright infringement (I expected that to happen).

It reminds me very much of Twin Peaks, which I also loved, but I suspect that it will have a similarly unsatisfactory ending. There is going to be a second series, so we won't be finding out for a while yet.

Watching The Fall right now on Cdn tv. Best crime show I've seen in AGES. Sooooooo good. I do wish Gillian Anderson wasn't so cold tho'. Not loving Top of the Lake but watching it all the same.

Watched the first episode of The Mill last night. Those poor young people working from 6 to 8 in the cotton mills. How lucky are we. SG and I had a conversation about what we would have been doing if we had lived then. He said he would have probably been down a mine and that I would have been in service. My mother born in 1908 was a very intelligent woman but as one of 8 children left school very early. She was in service and worked in a large house in Southport in her early teens. She used to regale us with tales and told us that the master of the house once made a pass at her. She gave him what for and when the lady of the house told her the next day to "Light the Drawing Room fire Winifred" she told her to light it herself and walked out!!

Absolutely cannot get enough of The Fall. Every single minute is just mesmerising telly. ALL the characters are very well written and acted. I cannot say the same about Top of the Lake. The characters in that show are highly unbelievable and, apart from the Scottish actor (who I last saw in The Fixer,) they are not well acted too. But, as Pabbers says, it is very different which is why I'm still watching it.

But now I can catch up on Scott and Bailey on the free website because they've only showed the first series on our telly for some reason. Yay! That's another brilliant cop show.

The story of your mother, SG, reminds me of my grandmother (born 1892). She went into service at the age of 14 but walked out within days as she couldn't stand it. She then got a job playing the piano in the very first picture house in London (she had taught herself to play when younger). She had an amazing ear for music and only had to hear a tune once and could play it. She said that if a very popular film was playing so that the queue was right round the block, the manager would play the film faster so he could get an extra showing in, so then she had to play faster too (of course it was all silent films in those days).

Anyone watching The Americans? Spy series set in the 1980s - 2 KGB spies who are living in the US pretending to be a normal American family, and whose next door neighbour is in the FBI :) Really enjoying it - somewhat ridiculous but if you suspend disbelief its quite gripping! The 80s fashions are truly dreadful - unfortunately I can remember quite a few similar items in my wardrobe, and the big hair. What were we thinking? The series has been rubbished by a lot of the critics, but quite often I find that those are the programmes I enjoy more. The critics were raving about Top of the Lake but I just can't get into that at all. Anyway, recommend The Americans if you like a spy story.

Also watching Scandal on More4 on Thursdays. Very intriguing, US political type drama - sort of West Wing meets Homeland. I missed the first season, but its been easy enough to pick up. Still trying to work out who the good guys are, but its good because just as you think you've worked out who is playing who, there's another twist. I must try to find the first season on dvd, or see if its still available on the C4 website.

David Tennant yes agree there, even better in the flesh too ;)

I shall be watching the live announcement on Sunday of the new Doctor, never fully got into Matt Smith so I shall be interested in what way they go with this one, im betting on an older actor in their 40s.
