Was anyone watching 'Death in Paradise' tonight. If so, did you have problems with the sound towards the end?

Happy Burns Night everyone :boogie: just watching the Belfast Tattoo, which I had recorded at Christmas and put on tonight because our sky dish has gone AWOL but the planner is still working :) was much more appropriate than watching the Chase with our haggis!

I wasn't sure about it at first either, SG - thought the torrid affair was going to be the crux of the story, but it really isn't, it's just setting the foundations for what becomes a very good psychological crime thriller. It's worth sticking with, but there's a shock at the end of the first episode, so brace yourself....

On your advice RB I will try that one, I saw the trailer and was worried that the affair would be the main part of it, like ""the affair" on sky. I will download it to watch while KevD is away this week and there is no tennis. Got to be better than location location lol I am looking forward to the new season of fortitude but can't watch it without KevD

Starting on Wed 8 Feb, BBC 4 will be showing a 4-part remake of Alex Haley's Roots. I remember it from the 70's...it really broke my heart, a real emotional roller-coaster. Maybe now that I'm (much) older, I will be more hardened, but I will be interested to see the re-make. It's only over 4 weeks (albeit each episode is 90 mins), back in the 70's it seemed to go on and on over many weeks.

Yes, I remember it as a very long series too - I hope even at 90 min episodes they have not condensed it too much this time.

It's there ok Jackie! I've just watched the first episode! It's too early to rate it but I'll certainly be following it up. First episode is usually spent sorting out the characters and working out who is who. No lovely Icelandic scenery yet!! Music is in the genre of 'Trapped'.

I've checked this out , Case and other foreign language programs have generally not been available via catch up on Sky and Channel 4 has only made the first episode available on the Sky Platform, series only on website or via app on Smart TV. If you can't get it directly via TV only alternative would be to get Chromecast or Amazon Firestick.

If anyone is buying a smart tv certainly worth doing a bit of research on what is included before buying. I know LG didn't have all the catch up channels a couple of years ago....maybe that has changed now?

I think All4 got taken off Samsung quite recently. Maybe just some models. At the time I did my research I think all4 was on the TV, but then I bought a different colour from a different shop at the last moment as was in the sales. The probem is that these contracts for apps come and go at any time, even after buying the TV. So you can buy a TV with All4 on it and then there is potential for it to disappear at a later stage.

I couldn't get my android box to work last night, so eventually hooked up my laptop to the TV to watch episode 2. But after all that messing around I then fell asleep after 10 minutes doh!!!!

Another weird thing is that although you can't watch it on the Sky platform you can watch it on a NOW TV box, which is a Sky one I believe.

LG now has Freeview Player, along with many other makes, but Samsung does not have that yet. But I liked the picture and sound of the Samsung and I got it at a very good price in the sales, so still cheaper to buy an additional box or stick if necessary.

I don't understand why anyone would fork out for a 'smart TV' when you can just get a TV/monitor and connect it to a PC. That's the setup I've had for about six years now and I see no reason to change.

Caro
10-02-2017, 13:20
I kind of understand where you're coming from Linda but you can't watch live TV eg. Wimbledon if you don't have a TV licence. Also, I assume they don't make large screen size monitors ... Anyway smart TVs are incredibly cheap these days.

I have a panasonic TV which used to have the eurosport player app on it .... now that I actually need it, it has disappeared. I do remember advance notice of this, so must have been end of licence with panasonic.

Linda
10-02-2017, 14:05
I do have a TV licence because I watch TV on it as well. (I can just switch the input between Freeview and computer with the remote.) You can get fairly large ones. And anyway, they have now made it compulsory to have a licence for watching live TV programmes on a computer.

cazza99
10-02-2017, 18:05
I find it is quite a hassle connecting up all the time having to unplug stuff and plug other stuff in when connecting laptop to TV.. Also it means that I can't use my laptop for other things if connected to the TV for something else.

Not only that but not everything can be watched through HD cable from a PC nowadays as sometimes they are blocked. One cannot watch Sky from laptop to a TV monitor for example.

For those who haven't seen the trailer, as the name suggests it's alternate history and in 1941 the British have lost the Battle of Britain and the south of the country is occupied by the Nazis. Are you sure that's right?? Isn't 4a the date the photo was taken (ie the date the photo licence was issued)? The renewal date is 10 years later so that would make sense. Surely there's no need to renew a photo within that 10 year period?

There should be two date 4a) is the date the photocard license was issued eithe rode the first time or with a new photo 4b is the date the photocard expires, it is before this date you should update your photo. It is usually 10 years since getting your photo. It can be less of for example you got a new photo 10 years ago but lost your card 5 years ago and got a new one. You would still only have 5 years left to change as even though you'd just got a new card yhephoyo would be old.

I was a fan of 24 though wasn't quite as keen on the last series "Live Another Day", this one "Legacy" is a completely new cast without the Jack Bauer character, Kiefer Sutherland said he would be unlikely to go back to it. Thank you to the person who mentioned this and reminded me!

I have just renewed my photo card driving licence online. Did not even need a new photo as I had a valid passport which expires in April. It has the same photo as the one currently on my driving licence. So they will replace the photo - - with the same photo! I have a sneaking suspicion they will not allow this - but I have had email confirmation. Did not ask when my passport expired. So will be interesting to see.

I have now watched all the episodes of Case. After hanging in there for the first couple of episodes, I became hooked! It's very hard-hitting and full on, no beating about the bush when dealing with all the issues. But it was so well acted and directed and the music was great. I have a feeling there could be a half decent plot in there if I could only understand what was being said (and didn't get bored trying to work it out). Following the debacle on twitter turned out to be more entertaining.

I have a feeling there could be a half decent plot in there if I could only understand what was being said (and didn't get bored trying to work it out). Following the debacle on twitter turned out to be more entertaining.

I've got Being AP recorded. I'm a big Horse racing fan so am looking forward to this a lot but wondering how much new we'll actually learn.

Won't spoil it. Enjoy.

I watched and enjoyed SS-GB. Personally, I didn't have a problem with it, but I know there were a lot of complaints about the sound quality, as there have been with several dramas recently - Poldark, Jamaica Inn etc. Apparently, this growing problem is not down to the actors but due to the fact that more dramas are filmed outdoors rather than in studios, and also because pre-screening is done by young execs with good hearing, and using state of the art equipment, so the sound quality for everyday situations has been misjudged. I believe the BBC are aiming to address the issue in time for the next episode.

As for SS-GB, I enjoyed it and am optimistic that it will build into a good drama - a bit of a slow burner, but I definitely prefer it to frenetic US dramas that overload first episodes, in a desperate attempt to get the audience hooked - prefer the British approach that credits us with a bit of patience and concentration.

I too didn't experience any real problems with the sound on SS-GB. BUT I didn't like the sort of breathless hoarsy tone that Sam Riley uses! Other than that, I agree with Anna. I think it is shaping up to be very good.

This is in no way related to tv! But I've never been a tv addict and most of the programmes I was watching, have or are about to finish. In the absence of any tennis to watch this week, I've been engrossed in the final (7th) book of Jeffery Archer's 'The Clifton Chronicles'. Whilst I'm not keen on the person, he is an excellent story-teller. Finished it at 02.30 this morning so perhaps now I'll get some house-work done. Oh heck, tennis starts Monday!! I've been a keen reader since a child; perhaps we could have a thread 'What are you reading?' or am I the only reader? Back to tennis, I hope Andy can remember how to play - it seems so long since we saw him in action!! (Sorry to jump between topics - blame it on the weather!) x

I never take any notice of tv and film critics. Prefer to make up my own mind while watching. Last night we saw Jane Tennyson as a new PC and it was very interesting how women were treated in the 70s.....making tea, bullied by male officers etc. Home and her family also included as the team investigates a murder. Think I will stick with it as keen to see how she progresses in the male-dominated environment.

I often find this, I go to see films or watch shows that have good reviews and sit there thinking I can't understand why it's so popoular. I was a fan of 24 though wasn't quite as keen on the last series "Live Another Day", this one "Legacy" is a completely new cast without the Jack Bauer character, Kiefer Sutherland said he would be unlikely to go back to it. Will see how it is, this series on Fox-critics haven't been that favourable mind you. Still to catch up on some of Fortitude, enjoying it!

one day I'll buy the box set of 24, and watch them all, one day at at a time. I think that Kiefer continuing to play Jack Bauer is starting to verge into Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones territory, ie slightly ridiculous for a man of that age to still be in that sort of role. Although Kiefer would still be more credible as Bauer

Well we've raced through it since, only two episodes left. I guess it's the kind of thing that you enjoy more when "binge watching" as we have really got into it.
We love it and we too have 2 episodes left - hoping to get through those this evening.

Watching The Good Fight - spin off from The Good Wife. Wow - every bit as good and I'm not missing Alicia or Carey at all. We even have a British actress in a lead role - Rose Leslie who played Jon Snow's wildling gf in Game of Thrones. She's brilliant in this.

Broadchurch was excellent as always but was anyone else lukewarm regarding the character Trish Winterman? I don't know what it was and shocking through the crime against her was I didn't warm to the character. Was more concerned about Mark and Beth Latimer and what would happen to them. Well done to Olivia Colman and David Tennant for award-winning performances as Millar and Hardy....sorry we won't see them again.

I agree, I certainly didn't warm to her either. Thought it was just me and was feeling almost guilty about it!

I too really enjoyed Broadchurch. I wouldn't quite put it in the same league as Line of Duty or The Missing, but still very good. Although I will miss it, I think it was right to end it rather than turn the small town of Broadchurch into another Midsomer or Cabot's Cove.

I take people's point about Trish Winterman, but I thought it was good writing to have a character that wasn't the 'ideal victim'. She was brutally attacked yet some viewers struggled to empathise with her. Raises interesting questions about social/jury attitudes.....e.g. has got us discussing it.

Yes, I agree. I thought the fact it was hard to empathise with the character meant that the story was more about the crime itself rather than about the victim.

The last two episodes of Homeland are great, thought this series took a while to get gong but it definitely does towards the end!
Agree re Trish Winterman - and yes, think it was her casual attitude towards relationships annoyed me. But yes, very clever to make us focus on the crime and possible guilty parties.

Line of Duty tops them all though!

We've not got to the last two yet, saving them for when KevD is home again. I did start the line of duty without him but it was good so I thought he'd enjoy it regardless of the leading lady. He did so we have been watching that together. Downside is I have to wait for him to be home to watch the next episode of that too!

Great acting (particularly from David and Olivia)and fitting end to Broadchurch even if sad we won't see them in these roles again. -certainly was great drama. Mind you ended a bit quickly for my liking, thought longer finale would've been ideal but minor grip. Don't quite take the same view as others, whilst Trish Winterman maybe not the most endearing character I did still empathise with her. In any case think it was in some sense refreshing to see a victim portrayed with flaws. Still viewed the first series as the best, whilst difficult to constantly maintain highest standards final series was though very impressive.

Yes, absolutely, I hadn't thought of it like that and that's clever writing and characterisation isn't is?

However, I wouldn't say I didn't empathise with her, I absolutely did, it was a brutal attack, I just didn't warm to her which is very different.

And I agree about it not becoming 'Midsomer Murders' RB. Perish the thought!

Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't remotely put Broadchurch anywhere near Homeland or Line of Duty. Firstly there was the second series which was an utter pile of rubbish. Whilst this was better, they basically spent 6 episodes keeping about 8 suspects in the frame rather than really progressing the story. By the end I didn't really care who it was. The series is held together by the wonderful acting of Tennant and Coleman, but without them it would be very average.

I loved this Homeland series, clever storylines with outstanding acting. It has set it up for another great series if they want it.

And then there's Line of Duty.........still perfecting the art of the interview scene (so long as there's a senior officer present). Fantastic twist in the last one but I feel sure that Hastings will be out to get Huntley now and won't stop until he nails her. Don't mess with that Fella!!

A 7th season of homeland has already been commissioned and is expected to air in 2018. Sadly I was waiting for Kev to be back on uk soil to watch the last two episodes, when someone gave away some big events in the last two on Facebook!! I hate that, anyway Kev doesn't know so I will watch them with him and not spoil the ending. Looking forward to it even though I know what's going to happen.

I remember Cardiac Arrest well - Helen Baxendale in her best ever role as totally cynical, hard as nails doctor. I think that series is far nearer to reality than all the cosy Casualty stuff.

And I did watch the next one too - Bodies - with Patrick Baladi and Max Beesley - also scarily believable......:nailbiter:

Mind you all this being up and about and back at work in 2 days after septic shock and an amputation!! That is medical nonsense.

I was just watching a really tv show, when Kev is away I can't watch the shows we watch together and there aren't really any that I enjoy that he doesn't so I watch tennis, films or average tv. Usually the tv is on in the background for noise when I'm doing something else. It was accounts just now.

Anyway I was watching a medical drama and they had a patient with PSP. It is the first time I've seen it feature in a tv show. Hopefully this will lead to more people being aware of it and then more support for those with it or family members of those who have it. It could be my ignorance and that it has been more widely shown. Either way, any raising of awareness can only be a good thing.

Yes, it was cardiac arrest that had the oh so familiar snippets ... ok, they don't all happen at once but happen (in some form or other) they did! Not any more though. That was most certainly based on a 1980s hospital ;). We worked hard, especially the Drs who worked round the clock when on call so Friday morning to Monday morning at weekends!! ... but we had fun, we socialised with each other and most of us loved our jobs. I like these, though with GBM, the Friday episode is usually the only one really worth watching - other episodes are a bit drawn out.
