View Full Version : What are you watching on TV?
Thank your lucky stars you're not deaf then! I am and rely heavily on sub-titles and they're the worst things ever, complete rubbish.
Winterwatch was presented from outside our house tonight - very exciting!
Alis I have been watching Winterwatch on catchup with particular interest on Islay. I assume you are on the southern tip of the island where programme 2 on the eagles came from? Fabulous. As the crow flies you are not that far from where I live on the north coast of Ireland. On a clear day we can see Jura from Ballycastle which is just a few miles along the coast from here. I was also delighted to learn from Winterwatch that the little birds which totally fascinate me when we have our long boxing day beach walk are called sanderlings. I could watch them all day but they are only around here in the winter. I am so pleased to have finally identified them and to learn more about them.

Wasn't McEnroe involved in a version of that- as host. I'm sure there's something in his latest book.
My memory is poor - I can't remember.. ..Possibly and if so, McEnroe stooping a bit low although not as low as Becker!

Got half way through the first episode of Britannia and we gave up. Trying and failing to emulate game of thrones meets Lord of the rings!
I've stuck with it and done 5 episodes now. It is very much Game of Thones Lite, but it has improved as it's progressed. If you're into that kind of thing I wouldn't put you off it.
But the surprise series for me that was astonishingly good was Big Little Lies. Starring Nicole Kidman, Reece Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgard and set in the wonderful backdrop of Monterey, this just turned into a monumentally good story. The first episode is a bit average but from there it becomes outstanding with Kidman throwing in a fantastic performance that is now picking up awards (and Skarsgard too). It also has a brilliant soundtrack.
It's on Sky Box sets and I'd put it down as the best drama of 2017.

Yes, Pat, we are on the Mull of Oa - on the south-eastern tip of Islay. On a good day we can see the Irish coast quite clearly. Did you know that in the summer there is a RIB service from Ballycastle to Port Ellen?

Saw it when it came out originally. Brilliant! Just that bit different and they're doing a second series with the addition of Meryl Streep!
Has anyone watched the new show Britannia? I've seeen trailers but it seems rather iffy. Need something to watch when the AO finishes though
Didn't know what to think of it to start with but it grew on me and started enjoying it. A bit unnecessarily bloody in parts though.

Just been watching a preview of my holiday.... jane McDonald's cruise programme was on Ruby princess sailing the California coast- we are dong this trip on that very ship at end of March. Had a zillion folk phoning and texting to alert me it was on. Would have liked to have seen all the poets and a wee bit more of the shop but it fair whetted the appetite, ship looked beautiful and San Fran and San Diego as expected.

Think I have already got square eyes. Watching too much Olympics and there are a fair amount of series on TV at the moment. Recorded Modus last Saturday.
Did anybody ever see the series "Trust Me" or "Paula" on TV? Were they any good. Need to delete some stuff off my sky box as it is getting too full.
BAFTA on Sunday at 9pm on BBC 1. No doubt, it'll be recorded by the BBC as it hasn't been shown live for years.
All I've seen lately is Only Connect and the skating highlights from the Winter Olympics. Intended to watch Modus but didn't.

I watched and enjoyed both the new dramas, although in Trauma I found it hard to believe that the father would blame the surgeon so much more than the actual perpetrators.

That baffled me too RB, I mean who knows how your mind would work in the face of such a loss- but the fact that there is someone out there who stabbed Alex seems-so far- to have been overlooked somewhat. And you would expect them to be the major focus of the father's rage and grief. Perhaps it's yet to come ... bit I don't feel like it is. Did enjoy it though.

Collateral definitely has potential to be good, as long as it doesn't go too far off on a tangent, or becomes too political..
Watching Modus..... first series was good too. Also Collateral. Recording Trauma. Can't keep up! New series of Marcella starts next week and Homeland on Sunday. Glad to see there's going to be another series of Spiral. End of current series was crying out for it.
Blimey, a new series of Homeland. I have still got to catch up on the last few of the last series. And another Marcella too. Gave up on Trauma in the end as I have so much to watch and am glued to the Winter Olympics at the moment.
Have recorded Collateral and Trauma as like the sound of both. Will have a lot to catch up on.

Liked Trauma even if some unrealistic elements (slated by some on social media), but will say no more. Whilst Collateral only airing weekly think it did show more promise , have never watched Homeland. I did quite enjoy Britannia even if took a bit of time to get going and didn't live up to the hype, didn't really mind the gore but some cringe worthy moments. Wasn't really sure of Big Little Lies at first but was really good. New Sky Atlantic Drama Save Me starring Suranne Jones and Lennie James (James from The Walking Dead, Line Of Duty is also the writer) looks intriguing, starts 28 Feb.

On the whole I enjoyed Trauma too, which is testament to the quality of Adrian Lester and John Simm's acting since I found the psychology of the father's fixation implausible and the sociological, class resentment theme forced and unsubtle.

There is yet another new series on telly tonight - Troy: Fall of a City on BBC - adapted by the same guy who adapted the Night Manager.
As a lover of Greek Mythology, looking forward to seeing how the BBC ruin the story of Troy too!
The Oscars are on in two weeks time. I hope BBC radio five live will do the commentary on it.
Looking forward to the new drama on Sky Atlantic with Suranne Jones. It's called 'Save Me' and is from the writers of 'Line of Duty' so should be good. It starts next week, 28th Feb and from that date also available as a box set.
I've been watching the new series of x files more out of habbit than anything. I imagine it won't go anywhere lol. Kev is enjoying Britannia I'm more listening to it at this stage. Though I am enjoying collateral.
I love six feet under, I'm a huge fan, so when I saw a new show by Alan ball I couldn't wait for it to start. I guess I was hoping it would be another addictive and enjoyable show. Having watched the first episode I don't really know what to make of it. It could be a case of the first episode not being as good as the later episodes. I don't know. It's called here and now and is on sky Atlantic. I think I will stick with it and hope for the best :)
Tomorrow they are having a one off The Old Grey Whistle Test on BBC4 at 9.00 pm.

Not bad. But even better is the boxed DVD set of 3 which has the full performance of Bob Marley and Wailers on it + the story behind their appearance on OGWT.
Apparently in 1973 they came over and played on the show. Later that year they did a tour in the USA and returned to the UK planning on a dozen or more concerts. However they had to cancel the first 4 because Peter Tosh was ill so only played 4 gigs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnin%27_Tour)in the North of England and then it snowed ...
so they had to cancel the rest and went home 'cos it was too cold!

Enjoyed seeing Peter Frampton performing, voice still strong. Gary Numan was interesting, never been a fan of his but impressed that he still wants to put out challenging new material instead of constantly doing the greatest hits circuit. His young daughter appeared with him, she didnt seem too impressed with the dad hug he gave her at the end.
I was at Bob Marley's final concert in the UK (in London) before he died.

Sorry I just saw this. I watched The Disappearance and it took me while to get into it. Thought the first few episodes were poor then it picked up. But I was really ticked off with some of the plot points and also what the mother did to get more information. A much better Canadian crime/detective series is Cardinal set in a fictional northern Ontario town called Alqonquin Bay and also Toronto. Based on the books by Giles Blunt. Starring Billy Campbell. REALLY GOOD!!!

I've dug deep into my memory bank and I now remember watching "Cardinal". It has all come back to me. It was great and I can def recommend it. I'm really pleased to read that a second series is on it's way. I've SO much to catch up on at the moment! Just finished "Rebecka Martinsson". I've just found out about this British show called Escape to the Country on our CBC (Cdn equivalent of BBC) and it's really awesome seeing British countryside again even if it is from my sofa. I can't believe how expensive it is to live in the country. Most of the shows are in the southern part of Britain, parts I've never been to (Cotswolds, Norfolk, etc.,) so that's good but I just watched one from the Scottish borders and North Yorkshire both of which were familiar to me - and so much cheaper than down south. Anyway, nice escapism!
Thanks Harriet but I do not have Sky. x

Lots of flaws!!! Still, it got good a few episodes in and the ending was decent too.
I wanted to watch Ordeal by Innocence, yesterday, but unfortunately, I caught the end of The Generation Game. I know the BBC claimed they were only going to make three episodes and, I seriously, hope they do. What a load of rubbish. They had Martin Kemp dressed up in a Hawaiian t-shirt with Richard Osman and Lorraine Kelly sitting on the side watching some stupid game. Afterwards, they had two Towie people come on. Ordeal by Innocence was much better than the previous rubbish. When I looked through the book, I found the opening was completely different. The book had Mr Calgary arriving by a ferry, but in the episode, they started off with the son being accused of his mother's murder.

It’s based on a book starring David Morrissey. A lot of it was filmed in Liverpool and Manchester. It’s the set up that’s a bit strange, fictional cities so the massive divide between the two can feature in the story. I’m interested to see where it goes.

I enjoyed spotting all the places I knew. Including the old airport building they used which is now a hotel and next door to my gym a few miles from my house. To be fair we spent most of the episode saying oh that George’s Hall oooh that by the cotton exchange etc etc small minds eh? The police woman was beyond annoying though. I wonder if the next episode will be less inter sting when the novelty of guessing the location wears off lol

I'm enjoying Secret Agent Selection: WW2 (BBC 2, 9pm tonight), which revives the training programme of World War II's Special Operations Executive. The ingenuity in how the training was designed to identify suitable people is as interesting as seeing which of the modern day recruits can handle it.
I have just finished catching up with 'Before We Die'. Really good, plot continually twisting and turning. Very tense, could only manage 2 episodes a night. The Queen with David Attenborough last night for the QCC. She's in good nick considering her age, much better than Mr Attenborough who was still hobbling, and wheezing a bit. Still, who am I to talk. It's been good to see much more of the Senior Royals on TV in the past few years, once upon a time the Queen or Charles would never appear in documentaries, but last night she seemed so much more relaxed.

Ok so in North America we get the British series sometimes years after they've been televised on your telly. At the mo, we're getting a show called Unforgotten with Nicola Walker, she of River and Happy Valley fame. Really good. And the 2015 series of Silent Witness. I really love Emilia Fox's hair style btw. And the last series of Call the Midwife - I swear I cannot make it through ANY episode without bawling my head off. And I just finished the second series of The Crown. I loved it EXCEPT for the episode featuring the Kennedys. I'm pretty sure they made most of that up tbh, so far fetched.

It was mildly amusing at fo at but now I just find it too cringly uncomfortable to watch. This is a bit random but I just want to say how utterly formulaic and boring Death in Paradise has become. Every week the same kind of thing. Ugh.

New series of the Bridge starts on BBC2 tonight at 9.00 pm :)
BBC 1 will be showing the royal wedding from 9am until 2pm (9am until 14.00pm) next Saturday. Then, it'll show the FA Cup final from 4.10pm until 7.40pm (16.10pm until 19.40pm). ITV will show the wedding from 9.25am until sometime in the afternoon. As I'll be driving off to my hotel, I won't be able to watch any of it.
Whoop. There will be a new Inspector Montalbano on BBC4 on Saturday - only a series of 2 though.

Thanks, Josephine - I think that's it. At first it seems odd something as serious as a murder plot is depicted this way, but yep at that time a very 'English' scandal would be that mix.
Summed up by this exchange:
Robin Day to Jeremy Thorpe on 79 election night: “ Do you think your forthcoming trial for conspiracy to murder was a factor in you losing your seat?”
Thorpe:”Put it this way Robin I don’t think it helped..”

I didn't watch any of the RAF's centenary on the BBC yesterday. But, I once got told that my great grandfather helped to set up the RAF. All I know is he was a Frenchman and he was in the French equivalent of the RAF. He, and some other Frenchmen, supposedly came over to this country towards the end of World War One and helped the RAF to get started. It was while he was here that he met my great grandmother. They never married, as I was told he was killed in a plane crash. Some experts believe he might have gone back to France to be with his wife.

Been watching Hidden on BBC4. Its a thriller - body of a young girl who disappeared years ago turns up and the investigation in to that and a possible connection to other missing girls. Brilliant performance from the creepy main suspect. Its set in Wales and although mainly in English there are odd bits of Welsh dialogue with subtitles. I think there's another two or three episodes to go - its on in the Saturday 9pm slot. I'm really enjoying it - hint of Scandi noir with the landscape and weather.
I watched the first one and have to catch up on the others, and I did enjoy it. Cowriters and director of Hidden were also involved with Hinterland. Some are calling it Cymru Noir and they have sold it to Scandinavian networks.

We've just watched series 1 & 2 in a week too. It's very well written and acted, but some massive plot holes in series 2 with regards how the crimes were actually committed.
As regards Bodyguard and far fetched, they interviewed Frank Gardner, BBC's security correspondent and he said the only bits not plausible were the friction between police and security services (used to be but no longer the case) and there wouldn't be a female bomb disposal officer sent in (?). But concealing PTSD is perfectly possible.

We are enjoying that too :) we tried the bodsygaurd which we both loved and manaaged to binge watch the new season of no offence. The acting in the bodyguard was good. Though we enjoy no offence, the acting is far from all that, for one thing it stars will mellor and while he might have a nice wedding singer voice he’s no actor. I saw what was coming in this season really early on which made it harder to get into that other seasons but it was still good.

Enjoyed Jack Ryan too and there will be a 2nd series (though probably not for a while), don't have Prime at the moment though but will subscribing again later . some of the other things I watched were Bosch and Sneaky Pete. On another note I thought the climax of Bodyguard was impressive and enjoyed the series, most popular drama in a decade. There may have been some unrealistic elements but at the end of the day it is a TV show and not a training manual.

Any-one else watch 'Care' on BBC1 on Sunday1, about a lady (Alison Steadman) who suffers a life changing stroke, and subsequently develops Dementia. It follows her and her families struggle to deal with the aftermath, and subsequent dealings with the NHS as they try to find ways to get care for her. For me, it concentrated too little on the human side & cost of caring for some-one in this situation (although more and more people nowadays have experience of caring for some-one with Alzheimers) , and too much on showing the NHS in a very poor light. We all know the difficulties the NHS & Local Authorities face in terms of providing the right care, especially for elderly people, but it showed them as uncaring and simply interested in creating empty beds.

The 3rd and final series of Fortitude did not quite live up to my expectations, disappointing there are only 4 episodes. However it is still good, yet to see Condour. I thought the "Care" Drama whilst not really getting balance right struck a chord and was well acted. Obviously controversy though, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists felt it done their profession an injustice whilst recognising the programme wished to highlight care system shortages in a dramatic context. The Alzheimer's society said it reflected the struggles of many people with dementia.

no doubt it did much to highlight the difficulties people face when care is needed that involves the NHS or the local authorities. to me the biggest problem is that the type of care Alzheimers sufferers (like my Mother) changes constantly, we started off getting her into a day centre one day per week (to get her out of the house), within 7 years she could not be left in the house on her own. Each time we wanted to increase the care package we needed another assessment, got a different case worker, funding allocations moved so it was always a battle. What disappointed me about the drama was that they finally managed to find her a placement in a home obviously unsuitable for a dementia/stroke sufferer, it was more like a Retirement home. It gave a false impression as to what options there are. For most, it's the cheapest care home the Council can afford (like the first she was placed in, and escaped from).

Yeah live TV subtitles are awful. One of reason I never watch TV news. Prefer read on BBC News website. I don't know how accurate USA live subtitles are but I know from Apple Live Event their live subtitles (they call it captions over there) are amazing! So accurate and keep up with timing and also like recorded programme instead of live.

Yeah I disappointed by that. BBC call New Year Day episode as special but it isn't even special because it part of series. It 10th episode of series. Specials always been separate from series. Past Christmas specials not part of series, they in between previous and next series. It shame there no more Doctor Who specials anymore.

I like to see what Talking Pictures (Freeview 81) are showing, as they usually show films that I've never heard of or other channels (like the BBC and ITV) will either rarely or never show. I watched The Games, last night, and I really couldn't believe it was directed by Michael Winner and had Michael Crawford in it. It was really, really bad. I haven’t tried les Mis yet ... best get it before it goes off Iplayer
I loved The Sinner. Both series.
I've also been enjoying Les Miserables.
I watched Danny Dyer's Right Royal Family on Wednesday. I understood why the TV critics had claimed it was a 'dumb down version' of the royal family. I didn't know anything about Louis the ninth of France, so I found that bit interesting.
I have just finished watching "The River", Walter Presents, All 4. Another scandi-noir set in the north of Norway and as you would expect, some beautiful scenery. I wouldn't give it ten out of ten, maybe 8, but I did enjoy it. Worth a watch I would say.

All 8 episodes are on All 4, Clare. There is a little 2 minute introduction which will give you an idea what it's about.

I've just discovered Derry Girls on All4. It's really making me laugh.

I watched that last year RB and loved it. So so funny. The nun was absolutely fantastic but all the characters were so good. I think one of my favourite episodes was the party.
Another very funny comedy series was on BBC3, set in Cork I think, called The Young Offenders. The accent took a bit of getting used to but I loved it as well.

Just seen a trailer for Baptiste, the spin off from The Missing. Looks really good (Tom Hollander is in it ). Just said coming soon, my guess is it will be on Sunday nights, now that Les Mis has finished.
I'm really looking forward to Endeavour!
It is the British Film Awards on Sunday. Silent Witness also ends this week but can't see Baptiste on the schedule anywhere.
According to this no date for Baptiste set yet - https://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2019-02-04/missing-spin-off-baptiste-start-air-date-day-time-channel-bbc1-cast/
AT 8PM TONIGHT, TUES 5TH, there's a programme on BBC radio 4 on match fixing in tennis, don't know what it will cover but just letting you all know

I am watching Clinton Affair on More 4. It's a bit padded out with lots of ads but otherwise it keeps me very entertained. The worst person in the story - Linda Tripp who betrayed a young friend to try to make money.
Bergerac is making a comeback with John Nettles making a cameo in it. Crackerjack is also making a comeback with Sam and Mark. I, vaguely, remember watching both of them when I was a child.
Baptiste starts on Sunday at 9.00 pm. :)
'Trapped' is returning to BBC4 this Saturday. I am so excited. I really loved the last series and have been waiting for years for its return.

I am looking forward to that too. I am enjoying The Crimson Rivers on More4 on Fridays too.
Do I need to have watched the first series of Trapped?
Baptiste not disappointing so far! Love Julien.
Watching Walter Presents Scandi drama Greyzone. On download only now after first episode. Stars the journalist lady from Borgen. Gripped.
I watched the first episode of series three of Elementary, last night. I remember reading, last year, that they were having problems with series seven as the viewing figures in America were dropping and it was believed that it would be the last ever series of it. Last night, I could understand why as I watched the episode.

I believe the second series of Trapped is a completely different story, so you will probably be OK. But I think it is based in the same town as the other one, so maybe there are some of the same people in it. I saw the first one, but not had a chance to look at the second series yet.

I have been enjoying the current episodes of Shetland on BBC1.
For anyone interested in early Emma Thompson and Robbie Coltrane appearances the new BBC Scotland channel is showing the original, brilliant Tutti Frutti (1987) which is available on iplayer for a few weeks.

The Michael Jackson doc on C4 Leaving Neverland. Not sure I can ever listen to his music again. Abuse in plain sight.
Between abducted in plain sight and leaving neverland I needed some fiction! Enjoying Shell and on bbc and the passage on sky.
I watched Masterchef on Friday. One of the contestants, Jilly from Fife, did a meal in honour of Andy Murray.
Finally, the best show in the world is back! Thankfully, like it had never been away.
Timeless returned on Tuesday, after being revived for the second time. But, I know it got cancelled for the third time just before last Christmas and won't be back. So, next Tuesday's episode is the last one ever.

Yeah I watched this at Christmas. I am disappointed the series didn't return properly and at first I was happy that at least they made a movie to tie up all the loose ends, but unfortunately this movie-to-end-it just did not work for me at all. Too bad.
I am watching a few great British series at the mo': Unforgotten 3, Les Miserables, Call the Midwife and my favourite, Killing Eve. Jodie Comer is doing the rounds on American talk shows so I'm hoping she gets nominated for American tv awards like her co-star Sandra Oh.
Also watching a couple of "gardening" type shows: one with Miranda Hart and her Mum, and the other is called Discovering Britain. Making me very homesick!
All excellent programmes RoastLamb! I loved them too.
The TV BAFTAs is on next Sunday at 8pm on BBC 1. I know my sister has been binge watching the first series of Killing Eve and she loves it. I know it's been nominated for next Sunday.

Line of Duty. Series 5 has been incredible, best yet imo, and can't wait for tonight's finale. So :excited::excited::excited:Not sure we'll discover the identity of H, though.
