Well done to Laura and Lisa.
A first WTA doubles final for our British lass and no doubt a lot more guidance to come from Lisa Raymond ahead of that match.

David Law:
"Errani and Vinci have won three of the last four Grand Slam tournaments, including the Australian Open in January, but they had no answer to the baseline power of Robson, who was the best player on the court. "
Wow!
Laura is going to win a grand slam at some point, maybe in the next couple of years!
Wouldn't it be fantastic if Andy and Laura won their respective singles titles at Wimbledon in the same year - or at any major come to that!
david1610
30-03-2013, 18:41
Give her a couple of years to iron out the wrinkles (double faults) and toughen up on match play and become more mobile. My biggest nightmare is she shoots up the rankings without doing that and then shoots back down. Let her get there fully ready!
But sometimes players do win a slam before they reach their best. Look at DelPo. Laura could do it too.

But sometimes players do win a slam before they reach their best. Look at DelPo. Laura could do it too.
So did Pete Sampras - he won the USO aged just 19 and then didn't do very much for another couple of years before he really started mopping up titles.
The Ladies doubles is on after the men's final. Does anyone know of a stream that will cover it?

I agree but my concern is more a WTA than an ATP thing - the number of players who rise, even to number 1, then something happens, and they fall back down.
It is not the fact that Laura could have success when she is not at her best, but that the psychological stress of being at the very top sometimes seems to cause problems on the WTA circuit and the more rock solid the basics of technique are, the more of a foundation there is to guard against that.
I think back to AO and the match with Sloane Stephens, who won it, made a SF, who just seems to have fewer basic technical weaknesses at the moment, though not necessarily better than Laura in terms of her winning shots, if you see what I mean.
The saving grace is that Laura does not seem fazed by the big time.
Laura's doubles final is coming up next. Does anyone know if there will be a live stream?

I suppose that is the beauty of doubles, or mixed blessing. One good set and a couple more points in the CTB is what it takes.
Reboot. Suspect they need to refind the fun of playing together and forget it is a final.
Might also be main court-itis - not for the nerves, but the conditions it brings.
Anyway, c'mon Robmond!

Excuse reposting from Estoril thread:
Today I got to see Laura and Marina (Erakovic) play doubles together. They never really got going and were beaten 6-2 6-3.
Sat behind their coaches and at the end wished them well in future tournaments.
Laura only held service once out of four times and both of them missed a lot of volleys. Frankly it seemed to be one of those days where they did not turn up at the office.
Pity. Of all the tennis players I have managed to see live (not that many I admit) Laura was the closest to how she looks on the screen.

Once she gets a decent second serve and cuts down on the DFs, she will be unstoppable!
But... c'mon Laura!

Vitally Laura holds for 3-2, at times giving a lot away on serve but she's still a work in progress. She breaks and easily holds so one game away, come on!
Laura breaks and then holds for 5-2, Ivanovic serving to stay in the match.

A break and a hold for Laura and she's 5-2 up in the 3rd set.
Ana to serve to stay in the match and force Robbo to serve it out.
Ace from Ana. *15-0

Ivanovic has made mincemeat of Laura's 2nd serve throughout the match.
Vital the Brit finds her first serves.
Laura now *15-40 ...

Freddy Fuddpuckers.
Ana breaks back so it's on serve now at 5-4 to Robbo still.
Ana still has to hold to stay in it.

In a set of many breaks perhaps serving first is not so bad.
One more break. C'mon Laura! You can do this!

5-6 Oh well. Two DFs and a wrongly positioned smash.
Oh well. Just has to break and then play a good tiebreaker.
C'mon Laura!

Very poor from Laura...this could be curtains unless she can break and get the tb.

Equally poor from Ivanovic who served 2 DF's when serving for the match.
Come on Laura!!!

Ace from Ana for 4-3 and still with serve. Must hold time for Laura.

*4-4 and well done Laura, now an Ace please!
*4-5 and Ivanovic sends back a fierce return and has 2 serves for the match.
4-6* and Ana finally has matchpoints.
5-6* lucky net cord for Laura but she's got a break back and has 2 serves to hold on in this match.

5-6 Laura to serve.
Oh dear.... another DF.
So frustrating. She is so close to being top twenty. Absolute priority is the next coach - even if it has to be off season to have enough time - to get that second serve working.
Still a good week though and I still do not want her to climb too quickly. A seeding for Wimbledon will do - and RG even better!

5-6 Laura to serve. Win or lose, no DF Please!

A DF from Laura gives the match to Ana Ivanovic and the 16th seed goes through to the QF.
Laura really really needs to get someone on board to help her sort out that serve of hers. Although, what we may be seeing just now is the aftermatch of what her sacked coach had tinkered with.
Noooooooooooooooo. Laura could have won that.

What a shame. If only her serve was as strong as the rest of her game.
Oh dear - what a shame - to finish on a double fault was not in the script!

Noooooooooooooooo. Laura could have won that.
But in a way that is the good news with Laura, even if the news is bad tonight. It is hopefully just a question of when she regularly wins that kind of match with that level of opponent.

Gutting to finish to match in that fashion after she got mini break back. Credit for the effort after the big win but one that got away, needs to work on the serve as too many days like this. Sure she can build on this week though.

Was a good match in how close Laura got, such a way to lose though, and I feel it was Laura's to lose. As David says that is the good news, she has it in her so it interesting to see what happens now with the coach leaving :)
I had to record it and didn't get to watch til after 12! Not happy bunny this am....

Possibly but somehow I doubt it. Her serve seems just as flakey as ever and I remember all those ball tosses last year in the Olympics - nothing seems to have changed. Maybe that's the problem. She needs someone who can address her serve issues. It is IMHO most definitely her Achilles heel. Her movement has improved but still has a way to go too.

Yes Sally I agree. Her movement is getting better.
Just to say when I watched her last week in Estoril play doubles, I sat by the coaches, but what was strange - but I was too shy to ask who was who - was that there were three of them! Marina's and Laura's and one - who had a Scottish accent - who was the one who spoke to both of them at a changeover. I doubt they have a doubles coach as well, so I was not sure what was going on.
Put another way, the sacked coach did not solve the problem, but I do not think he has made it worse. One of the tennis commies recently said that the problems were (well to a professional coach) obvious and altering stance and ball toss would not necessarily mean a revolutionary change in her serving, and gave the impression it was something not too difficult to do, so I am amazed it has not yet been done.
The problem of course is that all other WTA coaches and players quickly latch on to other players' known weaknesses and you are going to have players coming in to court and putting even more pressure on her to induce the doubles.
But I still want her to rise enough to get GS seeding but no higher until she has sorted this problem out. I am amazed at the difference in Estoril and Madrid - J. Overend in one of the match reports stated that Laura was playing with a new-found sense of freedom. She was very ordinary last week and it just shows how feelings regarding a coaching relationship can have negative, as well as positive, consequences.
Finally, some of the point construction work - so necessary on clay - was fantastic last night!
Laura is definately a work still in progress and she has too good a game not to continue to progress in the right direction. Obviously she is still young and has time on her side.

Update on Laura Robson: British coach Lucie Ahl working with her in Rome, under guidance of Sven Groeneveld, as a temporary measure.
I don't give much for her chances in Rome. IF she can get past Venus she is faced with Serena.
Chris Goldsmith @TheTennisTalker 43m
Laura Robson up to 39th in the WTA rankings... just 75 points from a French Open seeding.. Just needs to beat Venus & Serena in Rome! :)
Eurosport is covering Rome from 10.00 am tomorrow so hopefully they will show Laura.
Laura probably has a better chance of getting past Venus who is not the player she was than Serena who seems to be going from strength to strength.
Very best of luck to Laura. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

3-1 to Laura. She has grit in her eye and has asked for the trainer. It is very windy in Rome, but play continues.
