Wow!!! Well done Heather!!!

Must be said Lisicki wasn't doing well on her serve throughout the match (although the stats say 65% first serves in and 3 Aces to 0 from Hev) but from LS there were quite a few 2nd serves and especially during the first set. Heather got 78% first serves in and held more easily than Sabine. Both won 2/2 break points so honours even there but from the match stats it seems that Heather had the better return game and perhaps that tipped the balance.

In R2 she faces Maria Sharapova ..........

Have not been able to post much due to work. Her two victories in quali' were good but I felt like Sabine would have too much for her. She was ranked 12 in May--hadn't realised she dropped to 30.

Thrilled to see her come through a tough match up like this. She has to understand how to beat players with the game style of Lisicki 'cause there are a lot of the power players on tour and that's never going to be Heather's style. The more she plays and understands how to use her strengths to come through these matches, the more regularly she will be able to win matches against top 30 (I still think Lisicki is top 20 calibre despite the current ranking) players.

Sharapova will undoubtedly be tough but let's she what happens.

Looks like it was a really gutsy display by Heather, just a pity she couldn't pull off the upset as by all accounts it wasn't a great day for Sharapova.

david1610
25-09-2012, 11:54
From the BBC report (who in turn quote from Tennis Space)
It was a tough three-setter, very physical, but I went out there to win and I gave it everything I had," Watson, who aims to finish 2012 inside the world's top 50, told the Tennis Space website.
"I maybe didn't take advantage of winning that close first set and trying to get ahead quick in the second.
"But I've gained more experience today, I know what I need to do, I know where I stand, I know what I need to improve."

14 dfs for maria, and counting. how is she a top player and have this liability?

Sharapova is an interesting one, in this respect.

She's got big gaps in her game, yet has won all 4 slams. Weird, isn't it?

Her serve used to be a major strength - but since shoulder surgery, her remodelled action has been prone to breaking down on occasions, memorably so against Mel Oudin at the US Open a few years ago. It is a pity as her old service action was one of the most elegant on either the WTA or ATP tour, imo. Mind you, when her serve does click, it can still be potent. She served 14 df's today, but also 9 aces.

She can't volley - she will always choose to drive-volley instead. Same with overhead shots - she avoids them where possible and waits until the ball is at a height for drive-volleying again! Her mobility was very limited only until the last year or so.

So how come she's been so successful? Her strengths are extremely strong to counterbalance her liablilites. Rasping groundstrokes, a competitive instinctive second only to Serena, and a return of serve that is imposing. She's definitely a 'first-strike' tennis player. I've seen her play a few times, and she can impose an iron will on a match, and will not surrender that until the final point is played. She was actually astonishingly good at the French Open this year, for example.

Today, Heather's serve was exposed by Sharapova, who was often winning the first point or two in those service games and immediately putting Heather under pressure. She doesn't have the height or power to make her serve a weapon in the way that Laura Robson does. It is probably something that she will need to work on. Henin managed it with placement and guile in her serve - so she could certainly make decent progress with that. A good comparison is Sara Errani, who as a smaller player also has a serve that can be vulnerable.

wta article on Heather and Laura's QFs http://www.wtatennis.com/news/20121011/robson-watson-into-osaka-qfs_2256076_2946256

interesting... Heather's 4th QF and has not yet won one.

Cazza.... not one of the stats guys but Heather is currently on 905 points and Tatishvili ranked 50 has 1162 points so that is 257 points.

I realise players will add/lose points this week but FWIW in this tournament points are
W 280, F 200 SF 130 and QF 70 (which she has already got to add on next week). Laura has 1091 so is apparently 1 short! (though again, likely to be more complicated with the points coming off/going on of those around them).
Another way of looking at it is Heather has played 28 tournaments this year so averaging just over 32 points per tourney. Rank 50 averages 41.5, so it is not THAT much more.
Perhaps going one round further every other tournament?

Of course, once you hit the top 32 you get seeded for the slams and avoid the other top 32 players which gives you a chance to get a lot of the points needed to be in the top 32 which gets you seeded.....

david1610
12-10-2012, 03:05

A really good week for the British girls so far!!!

Heather Watson beat Doi (JPN, wr123) in the Semi-Final to reach her first WTA Final.
Coming just a few weeks after Laura reached the Final in Guangzhou that's great news.
Both will be nudging top 50 in the rankings on Monday.

In the WTA Osaka Final Heather faces Kai-Chen Chang from Chinese Taipei who defeated Laura in the Quarter-Final 6'4, 3'6, 7'6 in a battle lasting 2hours. Chang has just beaten Sam Stosur in another 3 setter which took 2hrs 25min (6'4, 4'6, 7'6). You'd have to think the Chinese girl might be tired tomorrow ..... but she's playing way above her current ranking of #134 and indeed 2 years ago reached a career high of #82. Chang has won 2 doubles titles this year and 3 in her career; Heather has also won 2 doubles titles this year.

Neither Watson nor Chang has won a WTA Singles title.
They've not played each other before so it's 0-0 H2H (http://www.wtatennis.com/headtohead/heather-watson_2255881_16047/0,,12781~16047~13135,00.html).

It's a great chance for Heather, WR71, to win her first WTA singles title!
She's currently on court playing doubles and bidding for a place in that Final too tomorrow!

Well done Heather!!!

What an epic match. 3 hours 11 minutes, 258 points shared. 129 points won each!!

HW had 17 bps, KCC had 16. Both converted 7 of those.

In fact all of the stats show one of the closest 3-set matches that you could possibly imagine. Amazing determination from HW to shade it.

It would have been nice had it been televised, but never mind.

Oddly, it's been GB versus Taiwan of late with Hsieh also being from Taiwan - kind of like Fed cup rubbers with Hsieh beating Laura in the final at Guangzhou. 1 win apiece after extra time, as it were ;)

Doubles final just about to start against a very strong team in Spears/ Kops-Jones - who are probably favourites to win this one. Kimiko and Heather will undoubtedly have the crowd's backing, I would think!

I disagree - both about this bizarre 'point in time in the future', as well as having to choose between them.

They are quite different players, so their games can be enjoyed for different reasons.

So I see no reason at all why it should be one or the other.

Ah. You're quoting Highlander. How nice.

And you are telling me that people have to choose between players in a match?

Not always. Sometimes it can simply be the case of 'may the best player win'.

Besides. If Laura plays Heather in a slam final, I might change my mind depending on the final. If it's the French I might want Heather to win. If it is SW19 it might be Laura.

If it's the Aussie open I might be simply undecided and leave them to scrap it out.

It is frankly not as tribal as football. Nor is it ballet either ;)

Interesting that Heather saved 4 match points to win today, and Andy had 5 match points in his match. Such a fine line between such different outcomes.

Article in the paper stating that there has been an increased interest in girls playing tennis, arguably inspired by Heather and Laura:

Great recognition for her and well deserved.

Heather is now ranked 52 in the doubles rankings. She has only played 17 tournaments so if she feels she can target it more next year, then this will of course rise. However, if she is now going further in tournaments (but less qualifying of course) she may or may not wish to revise how much doubles she plays.

In the singles, she went up 21 places in one week! She will just have to make sure that she gets more points spread around next year so that there isn't massive pressure on her ranking position to defend the points in a year's time. Hopefully everything will start to go up and it will not be such an extreme number of points, especially if she can rise up to a seeding at the GSs.

Heather and Marina Erakovic (from New Zealand) start their doubles season off in Auckland with a comfortable 6-0 6-1 victory over Hourigan and Williams (no not them)
For the record, Heather is listed as ranked 51 in doubles so let's see how that changes during the season.

Good start Heather!

I cannot believe it! Heather is playing on court 4 and I can get a stream for the doubles match taking place but not Heather's singles!!!!!
Edit: Even the betting sites are going nuts about the doubles match.. yes it does have Carla Black the former no. 1, but...
Heather 2-1 up, on serve. C'mon Heather.

2-2 Cirstea has two aces but two double faults already. 11/22 points each. Get the feeling the serving is going to be importante in this match - first service percentage and the no. of looks Heather can get at Cirstea's second serve.

So frustrating. Thought I would be able watch it!
3-2 Heather. She has much better second serve winning percentage so far. Oh well! First to blink...
3-3 Sorana Cirstea holds to 15. C'mon Heather.
And yes, the new livescore jumps back to the first match details even if you select another match!
4-3 I do not think either player has got beyond 30 on serve, though if Heather wants to change that... c'mon break and hold and first set. C'mon Heather!
15-40 Two break points (and not sure if it was 3 before hand). Second serve.... She breaks! 5-3
Now let's see that training come into effect. 5-3 Serve it out Heather please!
15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30 (seemed a long rally). Big point c'mon Heather! 40-30 SP....
First set against the world no. 27 (been as high as 23).

Very good positive first set. 6-3 28 pts v. 21 points. 8 points on return for both, but Heather put four of them together in one set.

Not sure I will be doing this for the second set..... go Heather!

6-3

Very long delay before second set - unless the toilets are a long way from court 4, possible trainer on court?

Ah.... Heather has won due to retirement. Pity for Cirstea - must be awful to be carrying an injury at the start of the year.

Her next oppont Kiki Bertens (ranked 63) beat Kutnetsova in a tough three setter so all the best in the next round Heather!

They will play the winner of Dubois and Erakovic (the Kiwi who plays doubles with Heather!).

None of them are ranked higher than Heather.... just saying, not tempting fate!

Crumbs. I was just waiting for the 2nd set to start and then saw the scoreline.

Well done Heather! A win is a win but never so good when it's by retirement. 6'3, ret'd to the Brit and she's into R2 to play Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands who yesterday defeated Kuznetsova.

Bertens is rising fast though. Never seen her play really but she has a 6ft frame so it's likely she plays a power game.

Yep, a Dutch version of Heather almost (except 5"taller and blonde!).
H2H (http://www.wtatennis.com/head2head/player1/16047/player2/13772) is 0-1 to Bertens. Kiki is 21 to Hev's 20 and has been on the pro tour since 2009; she's got 7 titles compared to 4 for Heather and won 3 of them in 2012 (Hev bagged 1 only). So, she's got quite a lot more playing experience under her belt and that might tell tomorrow.

They're playing 2/1/13, scheduled for 3rd on Court 4, approx 15.00 Auckland, 02.00 UK.
The following information is from Steven on BT.net (http://britishtennis.activeboard.com/t52060835/week-1-wta-international-235k-auckland-new-zealand-hard/?page=3).

Heather Watson WR 49 v Kiki Bertens (NED) WR 63 (CH 57 in Oct)
Bertens thrashed Hev 2 & 1 in Luxembourg qualifying in October 2011, which I seem to remember being a bit of a shock even back then. Hopefully it will go better here.

Once again Heather has been put on court 4, where there seems to be no streaming. Mind you, there is great match going on at the moment between Georges (and it occurred to me that Laura's style yesterday had some things in common with Georges').
Livescore here we go...
Heather broken in first game... 0-1
0-2 Heather holds to thirty 1-2
1-3 hold to thirty.
Heather to serve. She is basically holding her first serves and losing her second serves. C'mon Heather!
2-3 and she breaks back 3-3 And holds to lead 4-3. Three games on the trot for Heather.
4-4 but Heather now down 0-30 on serve. Seems very close from what you can pick up from livescore....
15-40 28-27 in match points. C'mon on Heather!
Eek! Broken 4-5 They are both serving at 67% but her opponent has won 8/9 of Heather's second serves. That seems to be the key to her breaks so far.
And loses the first set 6-4. If she can protect herself from being attacked on the second serve.....

david1610
02-01-2013, 03:30
Heather holds a tight first game after deuce. If really does depend when she serves the second and first serves as to how her service games go!
1-1
Heather holds again 2-1 (and got both second serves - clutching at straws 'r us!)
Heather breaks 3-1!
And holds 4-1!
4-2 and Heather holds to make it 5-2.
Bertens serving to stay in the set. Long, long game which she finally holds 5-3.
30-30 next point please! Yes....and on a second serve.. (currently 7/20 much better so far in the second). Next point please!
Deuce! Another points won on the second serve. C'mon Heather! Second SP. THis time please.
Yes! Second set to Heather! Seemed to have been able to protect her second serves better that set and so was not broken.
Keep it going! C'mon Heather!
The next opponent for these two is between J. Hampton and M. Erakovic (Heather's doubles partner). Hampton won the first 6-1 and 2-1 up on serve in second.

david1610
02-01-2013, 04:13
Heather breaks in the first game! 1-0
Goes out to 40-15 on her service but pegged back to deuce.
Break point - now back back to deuce
Trying to work at the same time so not following every point.. but still on deuce so very tight game...
Heather broken back 1-1 Very tight match - you get the feeling that these two are both fighters.... C'mon Heather.
Heather breaks again 2-1 Both girls' first service percentage seems to have gone down... nearly two hours of play mind you!
2-2 broken back again. Who wants it more?
Bertens holds 3-2
Heather serving, deuce... and is broken 2-4
Breaks back 4-3
Can she get her head down and win the next three games? hold break hold. C'mon Heather! You can do this.
Broken again 3-5 She seems to be losing the second serve points again...
One last chance. C'mon Heather!
Eek! 40-0 3 MPs
Livescore was wrong! 30-15 now 30-30, 30-40! 40-40 MP Bertens! Deuce (not sure if there were other AD points to either)
Heather loses 6-3 so 46 6-3 3-6 99 points to 97. Winner plays J. Hampton and she looks like a big hitter who does not always have control. A winnable match (did not want to say beforehand) so Bertens has an excellent chance of a semi...

Oh well.... two fighters and Bertens edged it... :(

Ah, that's a shame for Hev. I was hoping she could turn the tables on Bertens and avenge that loss in Luxembourg last October but the Dutch girl is as much the real deal as our Heather. That's looking like a new rivalry amongst the 'youngsters' on the WTA tour.

I guess Heather can move on now to Hobart* and get adjusted to the Melbourne time zone.
Auckland is 13 hrs ahead of us, Hobart will be 11hrs and the same as Melbourne.

+ I imagine she'll be able to catch up with Laura and Judy!

* EDIT. I thought I might be jumping the gun because Hev is still in the doubles with Marina. However, they are currently losing to a resurgent Cara Black (on her return from maternity 'leave') partnering Rodionova. They lost the first set 2'6 but it's 3'2 to Hevina on serve in the 2nd.

MTB http://lsh.streamhunter.eu/static/popups/127979730317810.html
0-1 0-2 1-2 2-2 2-3 (DF by Erakovic) 2-4 (good volleying by Heather but Erakovic into the net).
2-5 (weak return into net by Erakovic). 2-6 three lobs by Heather but eventually Black puts a volley away. 3-6 Black muffs a volley. 3-7 Laura hits return long. 3-8 long by Marina 4-8 good volley at net by Heather. 5-8 Good volley by Marina. Long by Heather going for too much 5-9 MPs! Heather in net....
2-6 6-4 10-5

Sallydaisy

Black/Roddy now have 2 serves for the match at *8-5 in the MTB.

Sallydaisy
02-01-2013, 09:26
Well, Auckland is now definitely over for Heather.
It's good that she and Marina managed to win that 2nd set but the errors in the MTB cost them dearly - can't afford that against the likes of Black.
Black/Rodionova d Watson/Erakovic 6'4, 4'6, 10.5

Hev lost the first set 2-6. Was a break down in the second, then apparently she had a medical time out, while her opponent had an injury time out. Listening on Radio5LX. Seems Hev feeling unwell. But Hev has now broken back, so 4-3*.

More to the point, in Brisbane she also beat that player who seems to spend a lot of time getting golf lessons from that Northern Irish golfer (or is there any other reason why they are together?). Both are reckoned to be not bad at what they do so Heather having to play somebody very much in form.

It certainly was a battling performance from Heather which does her credit but Pervak will be a step up, however hopefully can rise to the challenge. The injury time out though was a bit of cause for concern.

Heather is playing with Erakovic, with whom she has won a tournament (or two?) so it is not much of a surprise.
Don't Forget that although they are ranked similarly, they are at different stages of their careers in terms of how they might plan their years in terms of the tournaments they might select. I would imagine it probably made sense for Heather to find a partner who she actually could play with in a number of tournaments.

And there is the simple fact of getting in the draw. Heather and Erakovic are doubles ranked 51 and 58 (give or take a couple of places). Laura is ranked 283 - she basically has not activated that part of her career seriously. Heather did last year and probably had more success than she was expecting, and why change a winning team?
