Tonight we have the delights of our first ever career convention at the school so Minnie can decide what she would like to do with her life ... or at the very least get some ideas (she does have an idea at the moment but I suspect she'll change her mind a few times before she leaves school!

My 12 yr old wants to be a teacher. The other one wants to be a pastry chef. Tune in a decade from now to see where they actually ended up. :rolling:

Things will change, I am sure. I remember not wanting to go in for accountancy as I thought it would be boring - but I ended up as an accountant and yes, it is often boring. When I told my father that I wanted to study mathematics at university, he said, what is the point of that - all you will end up as is a maths teacher (he didn't think teaching was much of a job). He thought that I should study something that had a proper career path, rather than a subject alone. Of course having been a Sunday School teacher for 40 years now, and also having trained people in various computer software, I know that I should have been a teacher

Our now one-year-old kitten has just experienced fireworks for the first time this weekend - she's generally a brave little soul, but she did get pretty freaked out on bonfire night! What was unexpected (and lovely!) was that she did actually come to me for comfort - not something cats tend to do. I was sitting slightly sideways in an armchair watching telly with Dave, and Meg (the cat!) leapt up on to my chair and sort of snuggled down in the triangular gap between me and the back/arm of the chair.

I kept seeing her head moving and her ears flicking back and forth as the bangs echoed round, but she stayed there for most of the evening, off and on - with the occasional bout of hiding under the chair or the coffee table when things got really loud :big grin:

So sweeeet that she found it more comforting to be with me than on her own, though - our other two cats would never have done that!

Mawnin' - delighted to say that our internet, which has seen snails zooming past in the last 48 hours, has finally re-awoken. The pc nearly went through the window a couple of times over the weekend.

On Friday we were supposed to get connected to the new fibre optic system that's been installed in the village but unfortunately we made the mistake of asking to have our landline transferred to our ISP as well and apparently they can't multitask. The phone is being done first - thing is we'd booked a time slot for the broadband changeover and they took the money for delivering the modem, but somehow forgot to mention no one would be coming till we rang to say the modem hadn't arrived and would that affect the work! *Sigh* in the current economic climate where everyone is fighting to keep customers you'd think companies would get things right...........but no, service in all walks of business seems worse than ever.

Good article Ros. Interesting as where our daughter lives in Chester New Jersey there are lots of deer in the woods bordering their garden. Sitting on the deck we have seen young ones come out 3 and four at a time. In February they have the hunting season where hunters come along and shoot them. During this period the local primary school children are not allowed outside at recess. At night drivers have to be careful as deer can just run out onto the roads. It is a very rural area and the local are very unemotional about deer deaths and hunting.

hfwardhouse
22-11-2011, 17:29
I have to say that we allow deer to be shot on the farm when there are any - we have a lot of deer around - we used to only see them in the winter but they're here all the time now. It's a sad fact of life that the numbers have to be kept at manageable levels. And I do enjoy venison very much :red devil:

Genbrit - don't worry, you'll get the hang of a new phone soon .... although after Pat's comments about the software upgrade I'm now slightly worried cos the new phone wants to download an upgrade :eek:Can get twitter and read messages but don't know how to reply. Still can't put phone contacts in so have grand total of three (family) put in by daughter-in-law with names, and one (friend) just number as she couldn't manage to put name!! And as it is so sensitive it takes ne blooming ages to send a text. I have sent the grand total of two!!

We don't have many parties to go to. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with son's family. Boxing Day or day after we host a get together with friends and family and that's it usually. New Year's Eve we just go for a drink then come home to enjoy hotpot together. Husband and I do have a tradition of what we call "Our Office Party" where we get dressed up, go out for dinner and get merry!!!

LOL I'm still getting to grips with mine - I had all my contacts on my sim card so they transferred over fine - albeit in a different format so had to go through them all and sort them, but when I'm sending texts, the phone brings up all the contacts on the phone and the sim so I get them twice .... anyone know how to delete them off my sim card?! I think it's a westie or Scottie dog. Little white terrier? We really wanted to dogsit for another friend who has a cockapoo because that's the dog we want to get for ourselves but that's not going to happen right now. I hope it goes OK.

Jane, you mustn't delete them off your SIM! You must delete them from your phone only and keep them on your SIM. When I drowned my old phone, I would have lost all my contacts if they had been stored on the phone, but I stored them all on the SIM so they were safe. I always store contacts on the SIM only.

AllyB

I use the phone to store numbers but keep a copy on my laptop regularly. Hate the way SIM-stored numbers have restrictions on length of name and only 1 number per contact. Fair point as far as losing contacts is concerned though

Well that is not quite totally true, safest way is put all contacts on to contact list in email account and link email to contact app on mobile so it cannot get lost, SIM can get lost, damaged, etc. You got lucky SIM still working after it drowned. Also another good reason use email contact list you can use same contact on email too, so don't need to create two copies, one for mobile and one for email.

I never put my contact on SIM cos of hassle switch new phone and creates too many copies of same contacts and biggest problem is if you switch new mobile contacts info get messed up. On email account contacts info stay same and no need to do anything. Much easier.

Regarding your phone Jane, if it's a smartphone you should be able to set up an automatic back up for your contacts and then they'll be stored in the ether somewhere and your phone provider can restore them for you if the worst happens.

40 years since my Dad died in May 1971; I was swotting for my A Levels and as a consequence didn't do so well. As a total Daddy's girl I was devastated but it's easier with time. He was the British Legion chairman and always read those moving verses on Remembrance Sunday at our War Memorial so November 11th is particularly poignant. He drove supply trains during the war in Italy, Egypt and across Europe. I've still got mementoes such as a cinema programme for the Ritzy in Cairo and, umm, lots of signalling information for train lines in Italy!!!

Have I missed anything? Have been incommunicado for over two days because of the incompetence and sheer stupidity of BT. Turned on computer on Wednesday morning to be met with a message from Sky informing me that I had no internet connection. Picked up phone to call our lovely computer guy and the phone wasn't working. Realised why no internet. Then I entered the asylum!! Using our mobile phones we made numerous calls to BT. The first person we spoke to assured us our phone was working. I assured her that it wasn't so we were taken through checks. Unplugging all phones, tracing wires and lines, unscrewing main box. Husband was demented! She then said an engineer's appointment was necessary and as it seemed that the fault may be ours a £130 charge would be made. I told her in no uncertain terms that I would not pay that. Transferred to supervisor who, after a lengthy conversation, agreed to waive the charge and appointment for engineer was made for this morning.................On Thursday morning received a text telling us that everything was now in order and engineer would not be coming. More phone calls to India, more apologies, more assertions that phone was working. So I phoned home from mobile and a man answered. Slightly flustered as you can imagine I asked him what was his phone number and he recited ours. We then had a long chat and he told me that he had just gone over to Sky Phone and been allocated our number!!! Turns out he lives just about half a mile away. He said he would ring Sky and I rang BT once again. This time spoke to three people as I kept insisting I needed to talk to someone who could explain and sort out the problem. Nobody could! I was told that a technical bod would ring me. That was about 3.30. I waited until 10.30 and then rang again.................... Once more, after apologies I demanded to speak to someone "higher up". Talked to Ali who assured me that an engineer would be here this morning but couldn't explain how it happened, wasn't sure about billing or recompense policies and advised me to wait until today when everything would be put right.

AllyB
09-12-2011, 13:40
Although they warn you about the charge, you only actually get charged if the fault is after the main box in the house. We have an overhead line which breaks once a year on average, and the line tester always reports that its ok and i get a warning about the charge. I have learnt to ignore it and just get them to send an engineer.

Glad you're sorted now though.

Engineer came this morning at 8 o'clock. Came in, unscrewed main box then left to go to the Exchange. He was away quite a while but by 10.30 phone was once again working. Waited to hear from BT but nothing until a text saying everything was all right. I thought....this is not good enough so rang again. After telling the guy from India to stop apologising and please connect me to someone who could explain how this had happened I was transferred to Warrington and Michelle. She then told me an investigation would start and we would be contacted within five working days. I told her I was thinking of going to the Press and she asked me not to until the investigations was completed. A few minutes ago my mobile rang and it was a gentleman from India who asked me if my phone was working. I told him that it was and he then asked if he should cancel the engineer's visit!!!!!!!

Could only communicate through Sky, but nothing much they could do as all an issue with BT not cancelling the line rental at the old place and because it was not in my name, couldn't contact BT directly. Made a complaint to Sky and waiting for them to get back to me. It's not really in my nature to complain and only really comfortable doing it in writing, but we'll see how it turns out.

So I completely know where you're coming from SG.

We go ice skating all the time in the winter , there is a outdoor rink right around the corner from where we live. The young guys see my hubby coming and all want him to be on their team for hockey
Hes rather good !! They were calling him old man until they saw he could actually score .

I have watched him in Baywatch and BGT and he's ok. Was curious as to what his tweet was about so thought to go for it. I am actually more excited about being able to skate outdoors for free! At least this is what it says

So, to fill you in... David Hasselhoff will be at the ice rink at London's Natural History Museum tomorrow morning, dressed as Father Hoffmas, to say hello to his fans and give them chance to win tickets to the O2 London date of his forthcoming tour - An Evening With David Hasselhoff (March 2nd).
If you can ice-skate and would like a free skate with the Hoff and the chance to win tickets to his show, then reply to this email with your full names and you'll be added to the guestlist for tomorrow. We are not providing plus ones, but if you have friends or family who'd like to come, just ask them to email us for the chance to take part. We must receive all names by 10pm tonight!
The whole thing kicks off at 10am SHARP tomorrow morning - please do not be late or you will miss out!
Also, please be aware that you may be photographed or filmed on the ice with the Hoff.
Thanks everyone, look forward to seeing you all there!

I wish we had an ice rink in our town 'cos I love skating! The nearest rink is a good hour and a half's drive away and it's rubbish - there were huge puddles on the ice last time I went, and they let so many people on the ice at once that it's dangerous. :crying:

We have these plastic sheets here , that you lay down in the yard , and then when its cold enough you flood them and *voila* homemade icerink , very handy !!! We had them alot when our kids were young, and I bruised my butt quite alot too if I remember correctly.

ljs: that's right! So many people make rinks in their back gardens. Gotta admit, I thought that was the coolest thing when I came here. Of course we have the right weather to sustain outdoor ice rinks.

I did take my kids to ice skating lessons but it got quite tiresome lacing up two sets of ice skates so I stopped when they learned the basics. Tennis is so much easier in that regard. :rolling:

Rang our local hostelry to book table for Sunday and was told we need to fill in Menu with choices. That was fine with us. Husband painted kitchen walls and I had an ironing marathon then got ready and went out. Had phoned my brother, re starter & dessert choices so we filled them in, had a meal, couple of drinks and were home about 7. Now watching Royal Variety Performance which, in the main, I am enjoying.

Christmas lunch with my tennis group. Stuffed. You know you're getting old when the topic of convo is what you want done with your body after death. I said I wanted mine to be cremated and sprinkled over centre court at Wimbly. They all laughed. I have now amended it to being sprinkled on the flower garden at the back of Henman Hill. Any volunteers to sprinkle me?

Linda
15-12-2011, 20:22
I'll be long gone before you, so I'm afraid I won't be able to do that for you.

I read that in Sweden they have invented the most environmentally friendly funeral yet, where the body is freeze dried rather than cremated. It turns into granules rather than ashes. I hope that's available here by the time I go, as I'd like to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Today some members of his old band are going there to play Christmas music for the residents. This all came about because I used to teach some members of the band and when I told them their old band leader was in the home they volunteered to go and play. He will be so touched and thrilled.

Enjoyed the panto muchly. Our show is different from the British panto obviously but has lots of the same things: men dressed as women, bawdiness, kids coming on stage to play a game, booing the villain (I love that part!). They did Lady Gaga's Born This Way - very good! Love the dance numbers. Dorothy was a skateboarder chick in Toronto and blew away to Oz in a snow blizzard.
