I got stuck in the lift in Morrison's today :crying:

I got stuck in the lift in Morrison's today :crying:
Oh no Linda!!! That's one of my worst nightmares. So sorry. Hope it wasn't too long. :grouphug:
No, it was only for a few minutes but it seemed longer. The lift arrived on the ground floor, the doors opened about an inch and stuck. I rang the bell and shouted until a man came to free me. I hate lifts anyway - and I hate them even more now!

Were you alone??? I always avoid lifts unless I have no other choice. I'd rather climb a million stairs than take the lift. I got stuck in one in my app't building for only a few seconds and I had an immediate panic attack.

I had a scary experience in a lift in London - it was in Waterstones and Minnie wanted a new book from the teen section downstairs and my knee was really sore so I spotted the lift, and thought I'd use it - bad move - it was a moving platform and I had to keep my finger on the button while it moved down painfully slowly - I really thought I would never get there and that I'd get stuck - hated every second and walked back up the steps - at least I didn't get stuck.
Poor Linda :grouphug:

We have one of those lifts in work. First time I used it I took my finger off the button and it stopped. Couldn't figure out why at first and thought I was stuck! :rolling: The other lift is more straightforward thankfully.

Poor Linda...one of my nightmares also but thankfully have never been stuck in a lift. Would like to know though why I have been wide awake since 5.15.
Eek Linda poor you.
There used to be a pater noster lift at Sheffield Uni - frightened the life out of me - it just kept moving and you had to jump in and out of it at the right moment.

I know that one. It used to frighten me too. I always worried I wouldn't time it right and get sliced in half. It was architects who designed that building - called the Arts Tower - and as its not a very good building they put their department on the top floors (its a high tower).
never even heard of them, never knew they exsisted

looks so cool
At least you won't have a problem with the doors jamming in them.
We had a paternoster in the library building at Birmingham Uni. Used to quite enjoy it!
Well you can understand why it's called a pater noster........I was deffo saying my prayers before getting in!

I've never heard of a paternoster lift - looks really dangerous to me. I don't like the getting on and off of escalators that much! Pat beat me to it in saying it's probably called that 'cos you need to pray before getting on it.

I've never heard of that lift before. Hope I never have to get it on.
As for escalators it always really bugged me when my kids were little and in strollers that I had to take them up to the first floor in dept. stores because the kids' stuff is always up there. I dreaded getting on the first step always thinking I'd lose my balance and fall down.
Well it could only happen to me..........yesterday I went to Marks and Spencer and decided what I wanted was on the first floor. So off I set with my trolley..........up the escalator!!! A few feet up and I realised I wasn't on a travelator like in Tesco and I had to let the front wheels rest on the step and hold the back end up in the air. Got off as though nothing had happened and it was perfectly normal  :shamed::shamed:

Minnie has missed 2 days of school this week - yesterday was weather related - the roads were appalling ... today the bus door stuck open and it didn't turn up in its alloted time (they've to wait 15 minutes and if the bus doesn't come they can go home) - school said to go home so we did! She enjoyed doing some Christmas shopping instead!

Hi everyone, I haven't posted for ages  just having the worst, most manic run-up to Christmas ever! It seriously can't come quick enough for me, as I have some time off over the Christmas period but the work deadlines and family stuff at the moment is crazy! On top of this, my husband decided to decorate our bedroom and it ended up being a bigger job than I had expected (wardrobes ripped out etc), then he lost a couple of days in the week that he had off because of a family bereavement, which was a very difficult time. Our house is still upside down and I don't feel like I have a lot of time to sort it out! It might be a week or so before I post again, so hope everyone is doing ok.

Hi I'm Steen, @nolesfan2011 on twitter (Florida State Seminoles sports team not Djokovic for anyone confused), super tennis fan and super Murray fan.. ATP tennis nut and tennis blogger/writer/journalist (I write weekly on the ATP tour previews, predictions and the rest for tenniseastcoast.com). I'm a teenager, live in the USA, in addition to tennis I like politics and news and activism related stuff, other sports like football (Ajax, Tottenham and Hertha Berlin fan on the Football front, Rangers aren't bad either) and American football.
Been a Murray fan really since I got into tennis (around 2009), also like other British/Scottish players like the Flemchins, and James Ward.
Always been preferential to ATP, and though Murray is my number 1 fave always, I'm also partial to a lot of other guys like Hewitt, Kohlschreiber, Melzer, Dolgopolov, Verdasco, Baghdatis, Nieminen, Malisse, Muller, Kunitsyn, Berankis, Pospisil and Isner (and more).
I'm quite active with the tennis stuff on twitter along with rooting Andy on every time he plays and I mainly joined this forum cause I'm good friends with Xenon21 and she suggested I join, seems nice.. so thanks, feel free to ask me anything else, glad to be here :)

Rabbie Burns or Andy Murray?
;)
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BBeVIsFCAAE-hHZ.jpg
I had a nice time at the Burns Night last night. Totally blown the diet though. Was pleased to find that they had a quiz, but my team only came second (this is an absolute affront to me, as I am very competitive when it comes to quizzes). My excuses are (1) the questions were all about Scotland, (2) the team that won were all Scots, and (3) there wasn't a single question about Andy Murray.
I was also musing on how strange it is that every Burns Day thousands of English people dress up in tartan and eat Scottish food and listen to bagpipes and Scottish poetry - but I can't imagine a load of Scots celebrating an English day and sitting around eating roast beef and Yorkshire pudding!

Feeling a tad nervous today as we have a German exchange student coming to stay for 10 days. My daughter went over there last November and had a great time, I just hope our German young lady enjoys the experience too. Also nervous that I will have 4 children, 3 of them teenagers to contend with  hope I survive!

Many years ago the Head of Modern Languages organised a trip to England for a group of French students at the beginning of the summer holidays. They were accompanied by two teachers, a married couple who were then going off on holiday in England. Two of their children were part of the group. The day they arrived they were allocated to the hosts but something had obviously gone wrong. One child, a boy had no family to go to. Staff were asked and as nobody came forward I offered to have him. His name was Pascal and he was the son of the French teachers. The father asked me if I could get him some t-shirts but didn't give me any money! While he was with us we took him to London to say with my sister and showed him all the sights. From London we then travelled to Dorset to stay with another sister where he enjoyed a lovely beach holiday at Studland Bay and Swanage. We arranged to meet the group at Southampton for their journey home at the end of the fortnight. Meeting up with his parents he excitedly told them what he had been doing and where he had been. They showed little interest and were walking away from us when I called to the man and told him that he owed me money. With great reluctance he paid me. We received not one word of thanks from them. A few years later my son's school did the same and Philippe came to stay. We did the same with him, including Stratford as well as London and Dorset though we did return North to meet the group at the end. Philippe's parents wrote thanking us enclosing gifts for my husband and me, our daughter and our son. Both boys were lovely. polite and appreciative but the parents were so different.

Poor Pascal! Sounds like his parents were only interested in their holiday. Glad that he had you SG, he will have some happy memories from his trip no doubt. You certainly packed a lot in with your students!
Well our 16 year old young lady Marielle, is delightful! I think I've been fussing a bit too much though as I keep getting funny looks from my daughter. Regarding my daughter, there was no nagging to hurry up this morning as surprisingly she as ready on time (amazing what a bit of responsibility does). Marielle wore her coat to school (very frosty this morning) but Lucy didn't, somethings will never change . So far so good though

I went to an all boys' school (BGS Golden Lady) and at 14 we were given a male German penfriend with the idea of a student exchange. I had a twin sister and my mother demanded I be found a female penfriend. So she came to the UK and when I was 15 I went to see her. We fell in love as only teenagers falling in love for the first time can. Our parents were so happy - they were the war generation and to see their children able to establish friendships with the "enemy" reassured them that there was hope for, and progress in, the next generation.
We continued to see each other although our passions were otherwise located. Ursula would also see my mother in my her own right and both were good friends to each other.
Twenty five years ago I got my job in Portugal after falling in love with a Portuguese woman here. I went there by train via Germany to attend the friend (Ursula's) wedding.
My children study in the German school here - not a coincidence! Ursula now has three grown up children and has battled and overcome cancer. She came here a couple of years ago and I went with my children to Germany.
We are still friends and there is still a place in our hearts for each other, though recognising life takes different paths.
I cannot recommend exchange stays highly enough! :)

David, that is a wonderful story. BGS, clearly Bradford Grammar School, my daughter is at Titus Salt School (used to be salts grammar, renamed by the students in 2009 after a rebuild). Wouldn't it be great if my daughter Lucy, kept in touch with her exchange student & they shared as much of life as you & Ursula clearly have.

What a lovely story David. I too had a penfriend. In our grammar school, Notre Dame, St Helens we were just given them! We lost touch though when we were teenagers. I can remember she lived in a Chateau in Ardeche. Just remembered also that I had an American penfriend whose name was Diane Murphy and she lived in Waseca, Minnesota. We wrote for almost a year when she told me her parents were divorcing. I did not have any experience of divorce (outside of Hollywood) and wrote a long letter telling her I would pray for her parents to get back together for as a Catholic didn't believe in divorce. When I look back on the brainwashed, strict Catholic 12 year old I was then, I cringe. She never replied and I was mortified.:sofa:

RL, Marielle's English is brilliant. She is even getting the hang of the Yorkshire accent . Everything is going really well thanks, we have just got back from a day's shopping in Leeds and I am absolutely exhausted. I have to run the girls up to another student's house shortly as they are having a bonfire party for the German student's! Loads of activities happening this week, including a trip to York, which should be very interesting for them all.
Lovely to hear about pen friends and other exchange trips, thanks for sharing RL, Hfwardhouse, supergran and David :thanks:
