Today's church service was hilarious - impromptu nativity where we get the kids dressed up except with the we didn't have as many kids as we'd hoped so adults were press-ganged into helping out and I was the  complete with :halo: and fairy lights - I have now found the downside of losing all that weight  (wouldn't have fitted the costume last year!)
This afternoon's activity - decorating our :xmas large:

Christmas tradition no 2 coming up tomorrow. (no 1 : Christmas Market) My brother and sister-in-law are here from Wiltshire. They arrived yesterday and spent today with s-i-l's mother (88) and siblings. Tomorrow we exchange gifts and go for Christmas lunch. Then back here for a sociable family evening. They live near Salisbury and will go home on Monday.:xmas2::peekaboo:

Hi you all!! Had a great afternoon. Christmas Lunch was lovely. We had crackers on our table and we all wore the hats even though I had to force husband to wear his. My brother dropped his mother -in-law off and then it was party time. Well, more talking about old times time. Husband in charge of music, me in charge of dancing....we old ones can still rock!! Just love my brother and sister-in-law. We always have a good time when we're together which is not often enough. Yeah....go , go, go!!! Bobby Darin on now after Christmas songs and Irish songs.

Went for another meal tonight. Well, we met at 5.30 and were home for 8,30. It's become something of a Christmas tradition when two lovely friends and I meet up for a girls' evening. We had a lovely meal, great chat, especially as one of them is an ardent Fed fan, and a good laugh. So tradition no. 3 done and dusted. No 4 tomorrow!

I love traditions like that supergran. I have one tomorrow evening, 5 ladies who started to become friends when we all had a baby in 2006. We have met up at each other's houses once a month on a Friday evening ever since, the kids play and have tea and we have a cheeky glass of vino :wino:. Each Christmas we have had an evening together (just us ladies) that has always been a fab laugh. Tomorrow evening is our 6th year, I do hope we are still doing it when the kids are all grown up!

I'm sure you will GL. I still meet (not so regularly but we still meet) with the other 3 ladies who were in my ante-natal group 13 years ago. We usually try to meet once a term for a cuppa and catch up - one of our number was in Singapore for the last 5 years but has just moved back so it was nice having all four of us together the last time we met up! I also still go out for meals a few times a year with 5 other mum's - we all went to Toddlers together and have been friends while the kids all went through primary school .... I like the idea of regular meetings once a month with :wino: though ;)

Same here. We have what we call a Yummy Mummy group. We met in a toddler talk support group around 10 years ago. There were six originally and now it's a solid three of us. We're meeting for our Christmas get-together tomorrow. I've just baked a coffee walnut torte to take with me.
We have "coven" in our village (that's what one of the former pub landlords christened us!) - we've met up once a week at each other's houses for the last 24 years, used to be a Wed lunchtime when the kids were in school. Now they're all grown up and we're all working (although on the way to retirement now) it's on a Friday evening. There are 12 of us all told, although not all 12 of us can make it every week. We have a rota and whoever's turn it is cooks dinner and provides the wine. FAB!!!

Poppy is unbelievably excited RL! She is finding it a bit hard this week though, as I am working from home and her sister and brother who are much older are out and about each day with their friends. She did come to the office with me yesterday for a bit and had everyone fussing over her (which she quite enjoyed). She's counting the hours to Christmas!
How about your girls, are they coping with still being at school? Have a lovely lunch, concert and afternoon tea, what a busy day!!
A HUGE day for me - especially for those who know about some of the trials and tribulations I was going through earlier in the year.
I got my blog posted in the Huffington Post UK - they don't cover sport, and I know friends from my Journo Course who published articles we had to do for an exercise - that we got published more locally.
This is my own opinion piece that I would have previously published in my own blog.

Christingles???
I had my kids' piano teacher draw portraits of my kids for my husband's pressie and today she gave me the pictures so I had to find a framing place to do them before Christmas Day. What a palaver. I called several places this morning and only one could guarantee delivery before Christmas Day so I drove all the way there only I couldn't find the darned place. Drove all the way home kicking myself that I didn't take the phone number with me and googled a map for it only to realize I went right past it in the first place. Anyhoo, I drove back and the people were really lovely and promised me it'd be ready tomorrow and at 5:30 this afternoon they called to say it was ready. Now, that's what I call GREAT SERVICE! :cheer:

Forgot to mention Christmas tradition No 4 which took place on Tuesday evening. Parish Council pre-Christmas Reception....we had a lovely time and the buffet, as usual, was superb. There was a presentation to a lady who had been on crossing patrol duty at the local Primary school for 31 years, a really interesting film about the history of St Helens, and lots of chats and laughs. I was really tired after being out Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Quite a relief to stay in Wednesday and last night. Out tonight having drinks with a lovely friend and tomorrow go to our son's who told me he has tickets for a buffet and disco at the local Henry Boddington pub. Husband will like the buffet and the beer.....disco, not sure about that. I will love it!:rolling::santa dance:

We seem to have done ours in bits and pieces. I struggled with the crowds in Tesco today but we still have to get salad stuff (want to get it tomorrow so it's nice and fresh for Boxing Day). Still haven't got the tree up, will have to do that tomorrow as well. In fact we're well behind with our preparations, the house is still a tip

Same here, Genbrit - I'm also the only one who likes parsnips. Weird that. I'm also making mashed yukon golds, roasted sweet potatoes and carrots, sweetcorn, and buttered green beans with toasted almonds. I usually make broccoli but the broccoli in both grocery stores was awful. So beans instead for some nice green colour on the plate. I have to feed vegetarians, so lots of veggies and mushroom gravy as well as cranberry and mushroom stuffing.

Wow, sounds almost identical to ours - except I got the Broccoli instead of the beans, ha!! ha!! Do you put marshmallows on your sweet potatoes?? Cranberry & Mushroom stuffing sounds interesting, do you have a recipe for that??? The stuffing is the one thing I don't like about America, all revolves around cornbread. I manage to get sage & onion, which is my favourite, from an English store but always on the lookout for a good recipe. I do make cornbread muffins though.

Do you guys make your own stuffing? Surely it'd be cheaper than buying imported from English stores?
It tastes heaps better too.

Marshmallows on sweet potatoes sound very confusing ... but not as confusing as the recipes I've found.
Including one for sweet potatoes with PINEAPPLE and marshmallows (http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1722,130183-255199,00.html).
Phew!
Trying to get my head around a vegetable topped with melted pink stuff.
:hmm:
yes, I put marshmallows on my sweet potatoes. It's an American thing. They are white though Sally not pink!!! They melt and go golden, although sounds strange is actually quite good. Not sure about the pineapple as well though as much as I LOVE pineapple think it might be a bit much, maybe I'll try it one day.
Will have to look for a recipe for the stuffing.
I hadn't heard of the Christingle's either. They do look good though. Might have to try making some of those next year if I remember.
Sallydaisy
24-12-2011, 09:30
Ah, OK... white sounds better but over here (as you might remember) marshmallows are usually sold in bags of mixed pink and white so that's probably why peeps were a bit stunned at the idea. In America they serve corn bread (as in baked flavoured cornmeal) as a side dish to a lot of meals don't they? So, I can see they'd use it where we'd offer stuffing. I made some Chilli cornbread to go with a Con Carne once and it went down quite well but the texture is very different.

Son arrived home yesterday - staying for a few days, which is great.
Off to our family carol service this afternoon - we do a sort of ad hoc nativity - we have lots of costumes ready and the children (and some adults!) just get dressed up when they arrive. It means that we don't have to worry about particular people turning up, and also any people visiting can take part too, as there's no preparation to do. Spent the day almost finishig a Christmas Puzzle that a local wizard compiles every Christmas, We have got 120 answers out of 121, struggling with the last one. Clue is either large or scale or the 2 words together, letters we have are O _ _ I D E _ _ _ _ if there are any geniuses out there.
I came up with Occidental but not sure it fits the clues. Tried googling a wordfinder and only word it came up with was the same one.

Just checking that the clue is "either large or scale" ???
I was thinking it might begin Os for outsize?
But occidental (a term for westerners) fits - but I can't work out why it would be right given the clue.

Solved the puzzle, part of what we thought was the previous clue, had West in it, sorted. If anyone is interested in doing the puzzle the web site is http://www.christmaspuzzle.co.uk/ enjoy!!!!
Now have full cupboards thanks to a 7am whizz around Tesco.
Alas the whizzing around town came to an abrupt halt in Natwest where a squillion businesses were either paying in Xmas eve takings, or taking out float money!
Anyway - some of Xmas money spent on a couple of DVD box sets so... now I feel I can set about my revision for first exam of Journo school (end Jan) and not feel hard-done-by in terms of new toys to play with.
Decided to abandon the one hour on Public affairs, one on shorthand for the next few days and will attack Local and Central Govt notes and just do shorthand in the evenings in front of the tellybox.

Your hard work will be worth it....you know that.
Your hard work will be worth it....you know that.
yeah - after ending the (journalism) year on a high with becoming part of the blogging team at The Huff Post UK, I know that the sacrifices so far (no Saturdays/weekends free) have been tough.
From next year - the pressure will be relentless with exams, the need to get the shorthand up to 100 wpm and placement sorted... but at the end of the day - it's a chance in a lifetime to ditch a job I have become thoroughly disenchanted with and do something I love!
However - I still need to consider the financial aspects... dropping 2/3rds - 3/4s my salary is no mean feat on a single salary... any day now, that lottery win will come!

Nice to be home and in my own bed last night ..... today is quiet, putting things away and getting brain back into work and forum mode!!! The fridge contains a rather weird collection of food - mostly Lasagne and Trifle (so the diet is up the swanneee big time!).
Methinks I'm going to chill out another few hours watching TV (2 faves on at the mo' - Free Willy and Lewis) and do a Christmas jigsaw (Wallace and Gromit ...).
Catch y'all later.

Sigh - best mate rang me in my break for just 15 mins (good lass) and then just as I was settling down to revising the education system (yawn), my mum rang - and my FAVOURITE cousins all went to mum's to surprise her today... so I really regret not staying an extra day... mehhhh!
Anyway - I can't handle the education system now... so depressing myself with doing the post-Xmas spending finances as my Amex bill was waiting for me when I got home.

Just posted it on twitter/fb - but... looks like I have my Journo School placement sorted out at a local paper - looks like I have got 1 week on the sportsdesk and 1 on the newsdesk
I am SOOOOO relieved as I wanted to get it sorted asap - especially seeing as my pain-in-the-wrong-place manager was kicking up a fuss after letting my colleague go back home to India for 3 and a half weeks, but quibbling over my request for 2 weeks once he gets back.
Combined with his ridinkidonk mentality of never claiming expenses or taking all his hols... pfft!
Anyhoo... relieved and will be even more so when this first exam is done at the end of Jan!

Well placement is from 13th Feb for 2 weeks so no chance to follow/write about AO. I did pursue Tennis Head magazine too but the ed is away in Australia at the moment (natch) and I was desparate to get something sorted before everyone else on the course rushed to get something!
But what I want from this is to complete my portfolio in those 2 weeks (8 stories, 1 feature and 1 Public Affairs feature) and maybe even make enough of an impression that they might offer me more work.
Ultimately OBVS I want to be a tennis writer but you have to demonstrate a fair bit of diversity at first before you can specialise!

Well I survived the day and felt ok. Definately having an early night tonight. Don't know whether to try and attempt to get up for Rafa as tomorrow it will be Andy (providing he isn't a night match). Decisions, decisions.
I only started watching the match around 6.00 ish and saw the last set while half dozing.
Managed 5.5 hours of sound sleep. Set alarm for 3.30am and turned tv on just as Andy was serving his last practice serve - perfect! Have survived day in work and now running on adrenaline I think. I won't be getting up tonight, saving myself for Thursday. It's bad luck for me it'w worked out like this as I only work Tues/Wed/Thurs and so 2 out of my 3 days I'll be half asleep!

That's the only downside to Rafa being in the opposite half to Andy, so used to them being on the same night. Ooooh do I try and aim for 3ish again and watch Rafa? Will give it a go and see if I wake up. :rolling:
I'm setting my alarm for 3am. I don't know how long I'm going to be able to keep going with this lack of sleep, though.

I didn't make it and slept right through to 6am! :crying:
Shame on you! You missed a really good match. He plays Lacko next. Provided he wins that, the R4 match should be a good one, against the winner of Isner & Lopez (of course it should have been Nalbandian if he hadn't been robbed).

I know, I'm such a terrible fan! :shamed: Will try and catch highlights.
You're not a terrible fan at all! Everyone knows how much you love Rafa. It's impossible to watch in the middle of the night every night - as you say, it makes it very difficult with Andy and Rafa in opposite halves.

I know, it isn't easy when working fulltime and it's the 1st time I have had to try and do this every night. At least Andy is a bit later than 3am although not ideal timing as it could clash with leaving for work. I expect Rafa to get a night match soon so I am hoping it's the weekend.
I hope he doesn't have a night match on Sunday as I'll miss it due to church
I didn't have to get up for work this morning but was supposed to be working at home - I have to admit that I haven't got much done :shamed: I really should crack on as I have loads to do to beat the SA deadline.

Lucky Roger got walkover last night so I was able to sleep all night. Tonight doesn't matter how long I stay up cos day off tomorrow.

If you are terrible then I don't know what I am......I don't get up for night matches at all :(

Watching Rafa on Eurosport now!
Well spotted Vixs - I can watch it again! Although I've missed the first set again (I missed the first 4 games this morning 'cos it started earlier than I expected).
ETA - turned it off. Can't stand to hear the commies' inane chatter all over again. Did you hear one of them just say 'A great philosopher once said . . .'? Do you know who that 'great philosopher' was? Yoda from Star Wars.
Mock Yoda you must not.
:rolling:
Seriously, though, Yoda's a philosophical giant.

Just cos you don't get up for Andy's night matches doesn't mean your bad fan.
Off to work now - it will be a late night tonight instead of an early morning tomorrow, as Rafa is first on! Hope I can stay awake!
