Special Exempt places are kept back(usually 2 for most tournaments) for players who have gone deep in an event the previous week and thus cannot get to the next venue in time to play qualifying. In other words, they have played so well that their entry might well have been justified.

Protected Ranking is applied to players who have been out with long-term injury and fixes their ranking at the point they stopped playing for the purposes of entering tournaments once they are able to resume. It only gets them into the tournament but it doesn't count for seeding purposes. It means that players who have been out for a while do not have to rely on Wild Cards to get into tournaments where the cut off is much higher than their dropped ranking.

Andy is a good example of a PR. He dropped down to the #503 by Sept 2019. Meaning
he'd only be entitled to a few WCs (4 I think?) and at that ranking only be eligible to play
in Challengers or below because entry to all main ATP tournaments is limited in order of
ranking. However, on his PR Andy was ranked at 200 which will get him into any of the
ATP250 events and thus give him a chance. BUT he won't be seeded and that is why
he keeps coming up against dangerous players in early rounds of events at the moment.

Wonderful match, seriously silky skills from Dan and Fed. Most entertaining I've seen in ages. Beautiful players, both of them. So hoped Dan could push it to a TB in 3rd then snatch it, but Fed a master of finding something on the big points. Great to have Fed back in supreme form, and Dan should be so proud that he's right there with him.

Certainly was good match with a variety of skills on display from Dan and Fed, and you would have to say Federer was impressive- knew it would likely be tough but played a bit better than I was expecting at ths stage. obviously a great effort from Dan and he came close but needed to be the one with a bit extra on some of the key points. can be pleased with himself even if a bit disappointed, though could have had the big win .

That match couldn't have been closer, and was a joy to watch. Their particular styles of play made for a great match up, but I am so disappointed for Dan. Dan has withdrawn from the Singles in Munich ATP250 next week.
He'll have a week 'off' from his somewhat hectic schedule before playing in Madrid w/c 2nd May in Singles and in Doubles (with Neal Skupski).

Apparently he's started work already with his new coach so might opt to stay in Barcelona or go straight up to Madrid to acclimatise and practice there. At least it's in the same country so possibly fewer Covid issues?
