We've cheered him on to some fantastic wins at Davis Cup ties ...
... now we can cheer him on to win a Challenger title today!!!

All of us who've watched him play know he's capable of progressing further than his current ranking suggests. Quite a few people know that Dan doesn't always want to commit to being away from his 'own' life off the tour. But a Challenger Final (and possible win in Vancouver today) would put him into the top 200 where he surely belongs and maybe persuade him finally that he can make it a lot lot higher and be very successful indeed.

Wins second set 6-1 with three breaks!!!
Some very tight games in the third. Dan has just broken to go 3-1 and is now serving to consolidate. Holds 4-1
Had a point to go 5-1 but now BP against to go to 4-3. Now deuce again. A couple more deuces. Is broken to be 4-3.
And Pospisil makes it 4-4.
Dan manages to hold. 5-4
He gets an AD championship point. Good first serve so back to deuce.
Dan gets another MP - he has that Andy shot where the ball goes over the net and then stays really low.
133 mph ace in the corner! Deuce. Pospisil has AD and shanks it out of court.

Unfortunately Dan then got broken and lost 5-7 in the third. So close.

I am such a big fan of Evo - love the way he plays and his fighting spirit. And he's a midlander too :) He has been the hero in DC a few times and relishes the big occasion. I really hope he gets picked in September because he deserves it big time. I was sooo cross when he didn't get a wimby wild card after his performance at Queens. He always said he didn't like travelling but seems to have knuckled down now and this was a great week for him.

From what I have seen this last week, Dan Evans definitely has the talent to be a solid top 100 player, perhaps even a solid top 50 player. He clearly has more natural tennis talent than most of the opponents he is playing at the Challenger level. But to do that he has to decide he really wants that, accepts the commitment that involves in terms of workload and on court concentration. And then if he lets his talent shine, time will show where he truly belongs.

"I set myself a goal ... that I wanted to come back with a one [a ranking in the 100s] next to my name after America. I just knuckled down a lot more, I've been in the gym a lot more. I'm trying to be a good guy off the court."

Evans started US Open qualifying at 179 in the world, some 188 places higher than he was in March. He has twice had his funding withdrawn by the Lawn Tennis Association as frustration about his attitude and lack of commitment came to a head, but things look to be changing. "Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future," is the Oscar Wilde quote tattooed to his arm.

"The last couple of months has been the story for Briton Dan Evans. He went off the rails, he never knew if he fancied it as a professional, he liked a night out, maybe did it at Wimbledon, and it didn't go down too well. If you want to be at the top of your game, you can't do that.
"He had these moments in the Davis Cup, beating top 100 players, but he couldn't knuckle down - he said he didn't have the work ethic, he just wasn't good at his job and maybe he should just stack shelves.
"The big moment came after the second Davis Cup tie against Russia when he was the hero and he decided it was now or never. He went to America and got to the final of two Challenger tournaments. He's knuckled down and is playing properly."




Court 13 is rammed, but that's no surprise considering the level of tennis on show from British qualifier Dan Evans (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/23818601) and 11th seed Kei Nishikori. There's an air of Tim Henman and Pete Sampras about Evans right now as he introduces a bit of serve and volley. Nishikori doesn't know what to do with that style of play as Evans holds serve to lead 1-0 in third set, having won the first two 6-4 6-4.

"He's hitting the ball clean as a whistle. You mentioned his ranking but he's playing much, much higher than that.
"Nishikori looked very confident to begin, I thought it would be very tough for Dan, but then he won four games on the run and Nishikori has gone on a mental walkabout. He looks as if he is ready to throw the towel in."
"I honestly can't believe it. I knew Dan was hitting it great and I knew he would give Nishikori a good run out but I never guessed he would win straight sets. Nishikori started well but Evans got on top of him, he's outplayed the number 11 seed at the US Open."
"I'm thinking ahead later this year to the ATP tour events and indoor events - in my mind I can see him playing there and winning matches, coming from the qualifying rounds. He's got the game for it, hopefully he can get a few more wins, he's capable of qualifying for those events or doing well on the Challenger Tour. He's on an upward trend, we'll do all we can to keep him there."
"Who would he rather play in the second round? Interesting one. Bernard Tomic plays with a lot of slice similar to Dan. If I could pick I would take Albert Ramos - Dan's game would give him trouble, he's a typical Spaniard with extreme grips and topspin. Dan will be confident whoever he plays, I'd prefer Ramos but he has a chance to beat either of them."




Well done Dan Evans. The Briton didn't even flinch in that final game, attacking every shot with the same gusto which had brought him to the verge of his first second round Grand Slam appearance. Kei Nishikori doesn't know what's happened. He shakes the Briton's hand and drops his head as he walks to his chair. Evans waves to the crowd before being escorted off the court by security. I bet he could get used to that.
