Cilic can have a poor match and you never know, remember how close Dan was to beating Stan in the previous slam...and how poor Cilic played in Chennai losing to Kovalik #117 Obviously took 5 sets against Janowicz in r1 (currently #274 and who lost previous game in Auckland to #195) . Dan has a chance! Let's go Evo let's go!
Dan obviously believed he could beat Cilic, started nervously but I always felt if Dan played well, serving ok, fighting and mixing it, that he had a real chance. The way he is playing, Dan will believe he can beat his next opponent (probably Tomic which would be a revenge for the Glasgow semi-final loss to him) Now up to #49 in the live rankings

Dan being Dan and Nike's loss.

Stephanie Myles ‏@OpenCourt
Dan Evans said Nike didn't offer him a contract for '17. So he went to a store and bought a "bunch of clothes" (18 shirts). Uniqlo $19,99. Said went and bought more, not convinced the < quality would survive the sweating and washing.

Absolutely fantastic from Dan, what a win. It is so nice to see him flying, really hope this signals a new mindset from him because his game is lovely to watch but as we know he's not always really gone on a good long run in the past. I do think he has benefitted from Davis Cup and being around Andy and Leon, and it seems like working with this new coach is producing results. Long may it continue.

Dan's press conference. (http://2017.ausopen.com/en_AU/news/interviews/2017-01-18/dan_evans_180117.html) Some classic Evo quotes. ;)

Dan Evans 18-01-17
Dan Evans def Marin Cilic 3-6 7-5 6-3 6-3

Q. How do you assess the whole match? A wonderful performance.
DAN EVANS: Yeah, it was good. Slow start really. I was a bit taken aback how hard he hit the ball. So, yeah, had to sort of get in the match and hang in at the start of the second.

Q. Can you tell us what problem you had in your eye.
DAN EVANS: Just a fly went in it. There were flies, a little gnat, whatever it was. I just washed it out.

Q. This is the best win of your career by ranking. Does it also for you generally feel like the best win?
DAN EVANS: Yeah, obviously over five sets, it's a proper win. Last week was three. But against Thiem.

Five sets is the ultimate test, I think. It was really good. I think I played as well as I can play today. I was really pleased with how I played especially towards the end of the match.

Q. You said after the last round you had to neutralize the serve, get yourself in rallies. At what point in the match did you feel you were doing that?
DAN EVANS: Probably the middle of the second. I wouldn't have thought he served that many aces after the second set. I think I put him under pressure with his second serve. I was making a lot of second serve returns.

Yeah, I think I forced him into a few doubles as well. I served really well. That was a big part of it.

Q. What has Mark Hilton done for you? Is it technical and mental?
DAN EVANS: Nothing technically. Just, yeah, more just keeping me on the court each day. The end of last year was obviously pretty, I would say, a test for Hilt. I wasn't the best at the end of last year. He was just urging me to stay focused. That was the best thing for me.

I've known him a long time. He was coached by the guy who looked after the academy I was at. I've known him quite a long time.

We're pretty close. I would say really close. Yeah, I respect what he's got to say. That's a big thing for me, is if he says to me, that's gospel to me. I'll go with it.

Q. What is the position with your kit? It's not all color coordinated.
DAN EVANS: Is it not? Cheers, Mike. I'm not too sure you're coordinated. Geeze.

Q. Some would say.
DAN EVANS: I'm just out of contract with Nike. They didn't offer me another contract. I just went to the store and bought a load of clothes the other day, plain clothes.

Q. Here?
DAN EVANS: Yeah. What was it, Sunday? Sunday or Saturday, yeah.

Q. Which shop was that?
DAN EVANS: It's Uniqlo. 19.99, the shirts are.

Q. What about the shorts?
DAN EVANS: I didn't look. I just picked the shorts up. I was more worried about the shirts.

Q. How many did you buy in terms of shirts?
DAN EVANS: I think about 18 shirts, something like that. I went back this morning to buy some more, so... They're not the best quality. To sweat in and wash them...

Q. Will there be more trips the deeper you go into the tournament?
DAN EVANS: No, I only wore one shirt today. I'm good till Friday. We're good.

Q. When did the Nike deal stop?
DAN EVANS: At the end of the year. Yeah, the end of December.

Q. Did you want to renew?
DAN EVANS: Yeah. I obviously wanted to. I thought they would want to, as well. I guess they've got Kedders. There's no point in having two people wearing Nike in Britain.

Q. Any offers coming in?
DAN EVANS: No. Not at the minute anyway. We'll see. Another win, I might get one.

Q. You said this is as well as you could play. You said you didn't expect to win this one. Don't you think there's another level in you yet?
DAN EVANS: I don't know. I mean, he's obviously 7 in the world. I knew I could win, but there's no point sort of sprouting off that I could win. He was giving me a good hiding at the start. Yeah, just hang in there.

Obviously it got quite cold out there. He struggled to hit through me. Yeah, got the win.

Q. During the dark times, did you ever dream of a match like this or imagine it or visualize it?
DAN EVANS: Yeah, I mean, obviously I played some good matches before that. Then, yeah, there were some tough times after the Wawrinka match.

I still think about that match on the court today. It's not easy when you had the opportunity to sort of close out the big match and then lose.

Yeah, I'm happy it happened. But, you know, hopefully there will be no more dark times, as you put it.

Q. At what point today was that match against Wawrinka coming into the mind?
DAN EVANS: 40-30, last game, last match point. Didn't want to go down the other end, sit down and serve for it. Yeah, I didn't think I did much wrong actually in the two match points. I was pretty pleased when he netted the forehand.

Q. You have potentially Bernard Tomic next round. You have a win over him in a Grand Slam. Will you take memories from that match if that turns out to be the opponent?
DAN EVANS: Yeah, I mean, a completely different match to then. The Davis Cup match we played not long ago. I think it's just sort of afresh when we play each other, if I play him. Yeah, I'd say it's a 50/50 match. So, yeah, I'm looking forward to playing him.

Q. Will there be an incentive for his father snubbing you at training, saying you weren't good enough to hit with his son?
DAN EVANS: I'm not going to bother saying anything about that again. He confronted me about that. We'll leave it at that.

Q. When the match finished, you let out a yell as you came off. Was there something particular then going through your mind? Was it just a relief thing?
DAN EVANS: Yeah, it was a relief obviously. Obviously getting across the line against him. In the five sets, the five sets is a big thing for me to sort of last. Yeah, it was great to win. Just great to win. I mean, I don't know why I did that, though. That happens. It was pretty good for me.

Q. You seemed to be on your phone quite quickly in the moment of glory. Who were you texting?
DAN EVANS: It's just a friend of mine, yeah. Just letting everybody know I was all right, so... I'm not sure if she was watching or not. Other people have to work. She was, so...

Q. You have a friend here.
DAN EVANS: He is a bricklayer in Sydney. He was there last week. He flew down this week. Yeah, I guess stay down, miss a week of work. I'm not sure his girlfriend is that happy, but she'll be all right.

Q. Will he stay until you're out?
DAN EVANS: If he's allowed, I guess. We all know what that's like, so...

Q. During the course of the match, did you believe all the way you were good enough to win that or were there moments of doubt and anxiety? Were you really confident all the way through?
DAN EVANS: No, only towards the end I sort of -- I try not to think about the finishing line too far into the match because you get ahead of yourself. You're thinking about it, then you're not thinking about it. Yeah, started to really think I was going to break him and win the match. Obviously Love-30 was a big point.

Q. Would you say it's one of the biggest wins of your career?
DAN EVANS: Yeah, definitely the biggest win.

Absolutely ecstatic for Dan!! He really is THE MAN! I managed to see most of the match this morning, but had to go out at the beginning the 4th set. I literally dragged myself away from the TV with the utmost reluctance and couldn't wait till I got home (much much later) to check if he had actually done it!! (Really thought he would anyway). Still buzzing over Dan's fighting performance, mixing shots and playing sensibly to outfox his opponent, such mental strength as well, Cilic won 3bps on Dan's and saved 8 bps on his own but Dan doubled both of those winning 6bps and saving a massive 16 bps (of 19) including those 8 in game2 of the 4th set. A tense thrilling game of a wonderful match, which will live long in the memory

I have to second all the comments above. I am also still over the moon with Dan's win. He was great and more than anything I think coming back from the first set shows how much he has grown as a player. Cheating cilic is on my naughty list so I was especially pleased to see him go out early lol. Hopefully Evo can do the same to cheating tomic :)

Here Here

It may have looked like Ciilc was at a low but a good 80% of that was Dans clever play. (Never playing to his strengths and mixing it up)
The other 20% was his inability to either work out what was wrong or how to fix it.
Dan was so strong and focused on the job. Hope he realises just what he did and how well he did it!
The bit I liked the most was the amount of times he won points going behind
and wrong footing him on his back hand side.
Well done Dan soak it up and go and buy some better shirts. You sure deserve it.:bravo::GBflag:

Wishing Dan all the best, we know you can do it mate!
Not an easy one, Dan called it a 50/50 match and h2h shows it as 50/50 Bernie beat Dan in Glasgow DC SF 2015 in 4 sets when Dan was #300, previously Dan won in 4 in the 2013 US open. If both play like they did in r2 then I think Dan will definitely win but it will still be a close match with ups and down, he needs to do a job on Bernie like he did on Marin. Dan will also need to cope with a vocal and partisan crowd. Go Evo!

What a fantastic win for Dan - just been watching my recordings of last night so slow to catch up with you all.

At last he's getting the credit he deserves on here. When a few of us were sticking up for him v Kyle for DC it was all Kyle. I've loved watching Dan play since the first time I saw him at DC a good few years back. I've always said he has everything and more than Andy. The only thing lacking has been application. Kyle may be much younger but Dan was showing this promise at Kyle's age. I'm afraid whilst I think Kyle is a good player and will do well, I don't find him nearly as exciting to watch. He's solid and powerful. Dan, on the other hand has natural flair, guile, variety and is fearless. If Andy would approach net play like Dan does, he'd have been #1 a long time ago IMHO. I just hope this is the turning point for Dan. Some boys take longer to mature than others - I should know, I have 2 of them and the eldest has taken till 34 to find himself whereas the younger (31) was born old!!!
So credit where credit is due to Dan. GOOOOOOO DANNY BOY!!!

What a great result for Dan, but most importantly he has achieved by far the most important thing any British sportsman can aspire too. Far more important than winning grand slams or Davis cups. Indeed he has joined the likes of Andy and Andrew Strauss in having given the Aussies a good spanking in their own back yard, in doing so provoking many excellent tantrums from those who wear a ball and chain.

Now Dan just a few more wins and we could have a most entertaining all British England v Scotland final, now that would really give our antipodean brothers and sisters the hump.

You're very welcome.
When he failed against Stan after coming so close, that coupled with his disappointment in DC against Mayer.
I was hoping he wouldn't give up again but it seems it had the right effect and looks like he's here to stay.
And I for one am so happy he has, did and is. All his matches of late have been just magic to watch.

They all have their individual styles and personalities and I admire and appreciate them all - the only thing I would find boring is if they were all the same.

Dan is just fab....but I'm not sure why that has to be assessed in relation to Kyle, Andy or anyone else  Dan is Dan, Andy is Andy, Kyle is Kyle and Wardy is Wardy. They all have their individual styles and personalities and I admire and appreciate them all - the only thing I would find boring is if they were all the same.

Because people have looked down their noses at Dan in the past. More recently in relation to DC it's all been Kyle this and Kyle that. And yes Kyle had done well for us but Dan has been spoken of in slightly the same vein as Kyrgios, as though he's a waste of space because he's been a bit of a lad and not knuckled down/matured as quickly as some would like. Time and again it was overlooked/waved aside, that Dan (and Wardy) played a huge role in getting us back into the DC World Group, without Andy and but for which Andy wouldn't have had the opportunity that he did to clinch the cup for us in Ghent. Dan saved some 5th rubbers by fearless tennis, punching well above his weight. Those of us who attended those DCs despite Andy's absence remember them well and appreciate Dan's input more than he's been given credit for by many.
Off soap box. I'm a HUGE Dan fan and think he shouldn't do himself down by having it in his head that he's not top 10 material. He's got everything IMHO and if he's now prepared to put in the hard yards, who knows what he could achieve?

Ah, I see. I must admit that I hadn't really noticed that people had been scathing towards Dan, but if I had then I wouldn't have liked it either, Mrs P. And yes, absolutely, we are so lucky with our DC squad - they are all a brilliant bunch of guys who all make/have made a contribution that should be respected.

Ask John Tomic! (Bernie's dad.) He didn't want Bernie to practise with Dan because he thought Dan was not good enough! Several years ago I know, but all the same.....

Yes, I was aware of John Tomic's comments, so really enjoyed the look on his face when Dan beat Bernie in a slam for the second time  I meant that I hadn't noticed that people had been scathing towards Dan in relation to Kyle/DC. As I say, if I had noticed, then like Mrs P, I would have disagreed with them as all our players deserve our support and respect for their contributions.
