Hope he can capitalise on this week and push for Challenger wins and try to get into some ATP250's.

I think he'll end up around 150 in the rankings so on the cusp of getting DA's into main tour events when there are 2 or 3 in a week. TBH I'd like to see him head to the Far East hardcourt swing 'cos I'm think being out of the UK and in the company of Andy is helping him to see what he can really achieve for himself. + he plays really well on hard courts/indoors.

Wow!!! Didn't he do well..... Shame he couldn't hold on to that break but he seemed to let it go when he saw Robredo was in trouble and then couldn't serve it out. I like his play though, hope he is encouraged and continues the hard work off court. Loved that the small crowd were so vocal.

Disappointed but not devastated - Robredo is a tough customer and Dan clearly had him rattled. I do hope he (Dan) keeps going in this fashion as if he does, with a game like his, he has the potential to be at least top 50. Where does his ranking need to be for direct entry into 250 events anyone?

I really hope he takes the positives from this - there are SO many! Come to think of it I don't know how he did as well as he did given the amount of tennis he's played recently. His body must be very sore and had he come through this match, Fed would have been a tough ask. At only 23 he has plenty of time.

Dan-boy, I think you're going to need your own website!!

Where does his ranking need to be for direct entry into 250 events anyone?
!

I'll try to answer this as simply as possible; there's lots of rules and regs with the ATP!

250 Events
The majority are 32-man draw (R1, R2, QF, SF and F) played over one week usually Mon-Sun. They form the backbone of the ATP Tour and are open to any player ranked from #1 down to anyone with a high enough rank to gain Direct Acceptance (DA).

If there are 3 events in one week there's maximum DA space between 84 (28 man draw x 3) or 96 (32 man draw x 3) + 9/10 WC places. So, the top 100 players could all be in action if they chose to be. However, the top 10/20 tend to pick and choose what they want to play (mainly because they don't need 250 points) so that extends the entry lists down to around #110/120. Add in some injury/illness problems and personal stuff and on a 3 event week the DA's could well be extended to #130/150. So, Dan is on the cusp of that ... but in some weeks there's only 1 ATP250 event so he'd have no chance really. Mostly it's 2 events per week so he's got a lot to do to gain DA to them.

Entry List - this is key to all 250/500/Masters events of the ATP.
To be able to play in one of the above a player must submit his name for entry 6 weeks prior to the start date of the event and based on rankings on that 6-week cut off date. The Entry Lists are then published giving those who have applied, been given DA and also showing the number of WC (wildcard) places available, SE (special exempt spaces*) and then a list of Alternates. A player with a suitable ranking will end up as a DA on one event for a week BUT if they're not a DA they can appear on all the ALT lists for any available event in one week.

From Entry List to the Draw
In the 6 week interim a lot can change which mean players don't make it to the draw.
E.g. injuries/illness, decision to withdraw from ALT in certain events to focus on others.

And others can join in ... usually via a WC. So some players might be moved from ALT to WC and the TD (tournament director) might persuade a top player in and award them a WC.

So, how does Dan Evans get into a 250 now he's out of the USO?
He can't get into any over the next 6 weeks without a WC (and some TD's might be glad to have him!).
There are some 250's but he's missed the 'entry' cut-off date and his current ranking isn't high enough.

So, the earliest events he could now 'enter' (probably as an ALT) are those for w/c 14th October.
As it happens there are 3 that week ... Moscow, Stockholm and Vienna, all indoor hard courts which suit him.

Unfortunately, the ATP rankings won't be updated until Tuesday 10th September which means he'd end up on the ALT list for all 3 with his current rank of #179 and likely wouldn't get in.

His new ranking of around #148 won't be effective until 21st October for Entry list purposes and there aren't any more 250's in 2013 that he can enter because the only ATP tournaments left are Basel/Valencia (500's), Paris Master and the WTF.

Ideally Dan needs to WIN a couple of Challenger events to gain confidence (having lost the last 2 he was in) but focus on gaining any points to push his ranking up ahead of 2014. And he needs to do so as quickly as possible so he can get his name onto ATP250 Entry Lists for events like Doha, Chennai, Brisbane, Auckland and Sydney. The cut-off for those events is middle of November 2013.

Challenger Events
Dan really needs to focus on the $/125/100k events which are closest to the ATP250's e.g. the ones he's played in the US at Aptos and Vancouver. These events attract the guys he's likely to be up against at Slams and against whom he'll stand to gain points and experience, especially some guys who might have dipped out of the top50 for various reasons and there's plenty of decent players around his ranking anyway. At worst maybe he could enter the E64k ones if it's convenient travel wise ... but they offer fewer points per round.

Upcoming ones of interest for Dan (and after Davis Cup) could be:-

16/9: Taiwan, Poland, Turkey
23/9: France, Romania
30/9: Belgium, California
7/10: California, Uzbekistan, France
14/10: France
21/10: Argentina, Russia
28/10: Switzerland, USA
4/11: Slovakia and Italy
11/11: Norway

That's moreorless it for the year if he wants to gain points to get into 250's from January 2014 onwards.

I was disappointed for Dan but he has had a fabulous 2 weeks. He played so well and I'm sure the errors he made when going for the fourth set were down. to a certain extent, to nerves. He also over hit at times when going for winners but that simply showed me the desire he had. He will learn so much from this experience. Playing in a Grand Slam must have shown him what he can do and what could lie ahead for him. I felt so proud and wanted to hug him. I'm sure with all the expertise and encouragement surrounding him that he can forge ahead. Do hope so as he is a very exciting player. Also hope he is playing in DC.

What are the rules for SE places (and do 250s have them or only tournaments which have qualifiers)? If Dan got to a Challenger final, and was on the ALT list for a 250 starting the next day, would he get a SE place, or do those only apply to players competing in a tournament at the same level?

Fantastic week for Dan - I thought Robredo would be a match too far for him, but huge credit for the fight and he nearly did it. He should be really proud, and look forward to seeing his name a lot more in 250s and beyond in 2014. Agree that he should concentrate now till the end of the year on the top level Challengers and if he could win a couple of titles that would be fabulous. Exciting times.

I thought SE was for players coming back from injury. He would need a wild card into a tournament or will need to play qualies for tournaments that his ranking is not good enough to enter.

Edit. A SE is also for a player who has won an ATP tournament the week before I think.

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/23925211)- US Open 2013: Dan Evans can have a bright future

He is projected to rise inside the world's top 150 (from a ranking of 367 in March) when the next list is published at the conclusion of the US Open and, with very few points to defend over the coming months, he will have plenty of opportunity.

The target now will be the top-tier events on the Challenger Tour, which could see him spending the British autumn in places like Tashkent, Mendoza, Montevideo and Bogota.

There is also a hope that he could be offered a wildcard into one of the smaller events on the ATP tour: Stockholm, Moscow and Vienna all stage tournaments in the same week in the middle of October, and a couple of wins there would contribute meaningful ranking points.

That needs checking ... I'm honestly not sure if it has to be like for like. It's more to do with players needed to arrive at a venue to qualify but if they are going deep in their current tournament and can't be in 2 places at once the TD would consider them for an SE. If 2 players are up for consideration the SE usually goes to the higher ranked guy.

It's very long winded but here's an extract from the ATP Rules (item 7.10):

7.10 Special Exempts (SE)

A. Eligibility
Players may receive a special exempt into the main draw of the following week’s
tournament if they meet the criteria and apply for it in a timely manner.
1) A player is eligible to receive a special exempt into the singles main draw of the
following week’s tournament, subject to the provisions of this section, if he is unable
to compete in that qualifying competition because he is still competing on the
date the qualifying competition begins in another qualifi ed event, and his current
ranking as of the date of the entry deadline would not have otherwise qualifi ed
him as a direct acceptance on the original acceptance list if he had entered. In
addition, a player who is still playing a match at 9 p.m. on Friday (the qualifying
competition sign-in deadline) is eligible to receive a special exempt only if he wins
that match.
a) A qualifi ed event for special exempt to a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament
is the singles event of another ATP World Tour Masters 1000 or ATP
World Tour 500 tournament.
b) A Qualifi ed event for special exempt to an ATP World Tour 500 tournament is
the singles event of another ATP World Tour 500 or ATP World Tour Masters
1000 tournament.
c) A Qualifi ed event for special exempt to an ATP World Tour 250 tournament
is the singles event of any ATP World Tour 250, ATP World Tour 500 or ATP
World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.
d) A Qualifi ed event for special exempt to a ATP Challenger Tour tournament is
the singles event of an ATP World Tour or ATP Challenger Tour tournament
within the same geographic region, unless there are no Challengers in the
same region the following week. If there are no Challengers in the same
region the following week, then a qualifi ed event would include all ATP Chal-lenger Tour events scheduled in the following week, regardless of region.
(Defi nition of Regions can be found in Exhibit Q).
e) EXCEPTION: A player who has entered and been accepted into the qualifying
draw of an ATP World Tour 500 or ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament
and has been withdrawn because he is still competing, will be added to
the last position on the special exempt list of a ATP Challenger Tour tournament
scheduled for the next week, even though he would have been a direct
acceptance, had he entered the Challenger.

B. Number of Special Exempts
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and ATP World Tour 500 tournaments shall have one
(1) special exempt and ATP World Tour 250 and ATP Challenger Tour tournaments
shall have two (2).

C. Selection of Special Exempt
1) If there are not suffi cient special exempt places in the draw for applicants, the
players shall be selected according to their position on the most recent Emirates
ATP Rankings list issued prior to the tournament or by their protected ranking,
as long as their protected ranking would not have qualifi ed them as a direct acceptance
had they entered. If their protected ranking would have placed them in
the main draw had they entered, then the protected ranking cannot be used to
determine a player’s position on the special exempt list.
2) ATP World Tour. If the special exempt places are not needed before the beginning
of the qualifying competition, the special exempt places shall be fi lled by
additional direct acceptances selected from the original acceptance list. Thus a
player may be pulled out of the qualifying before the fi rst ball is hit and replaced
by an alternate list player.
3) ATP Challenger Tour. If the special exempt places are not needed prior to the 12
Noon withdrawal deadline, the special exempt places shall be fi lled by additional
direct acceptances selected from the original acceptance list. If the special exempt
places have not been determined at the deadline, and then following the 12
Noon withdrawal deadline it is determined that one or both of the places are not
needed, the additional direct acceptance(s) shall be fi lled by the highest ranked
player(s) who signed in for the qualifying of that event, including those who have
preserved their eligibility.

D. Special Exempt Process
1) A list of possible eligible players is compiled by the player services department by
Wednesday/Thursday of the current week for the next week’s tournaments.
2) The list of eligible players is supplied to the supervisors where the players are
competing. The supervisors need to contact each player to inquire if the player
is interested in the special exempt position and then contact player relations immediately
following the player’s decision to remove himself from consideration for
any tournament for which he is eligible.
3) If the player is interested in an event, player relations coordinates with the supervisors
at both events until the SE positions are filled.
4) If the main draw is to be made before a potential special exempt player plays on
Friday, then such place(s) shall be drawn in the same manner as qualifi er, i.e.,
four qualifi ers (“Q”) and one or two “SE” depending on whether there are one or
two possibilities. Each of the fi ve or six slots are marked “Q/SE.” As soon as the
“SE” match results are known, either the “SE” or the next direct acceptance (if the
SE lost) is randomly drawn and inserted into the draw.
NOTE: Once a player has become eligible for Special Exempt consideration, he
must confi rm to the Supervisor or Player Relations staff no later than one (1) hour
following the completion of the match that qualifi ed him for a Special Exempt, that
he is applying for the Special Exempt position.
5) If a player does not fi nish his Friday match by the nine (9) p.m. deadline at the
qualifying site and subsequently loses his match, then he is not eligible to be
signed in for qualifying or for a special exempt; however, he may receive a wild
card from the tournament if it is known before the qualifying draw that he has lost
and that no special scheduling shall be required.

I thought SE was for players coming back from injury. He would need a wild card into a tournament or will need to play qualies for tournaments that his ranking is not good enough to enter.
An SE wouldn't normally be used for players coming back from injury; that is what the Protected Ranking rules were put in place to cover. If someone has been out for a while (e.g. Ross Hutchins) they can apply for an Entry Protection and there are set rules regarding then how his ranking is calculated on return. You'll know if someone has a Protected Ranking (PR) because in any entry list their ranking will have @ preceding it.

Q. What is a protected ranking and who is eligible?
A. A player may petition the Executive Chairman & President for an Entry Protection when he is physically injured and does not compete in any tennis event for a minimum period of six months. The written petition must be received within six months of his last tournament.

The Entry Protection shall be a position in the Emirates ATP Rankings, as determined by the player's average Emirates ATP Rankings position during the first three months of his injury. The Entry Protection shall be for entry into the main draw or qualifying competition or for special exempt consideration. The Entry Protection shall not be used for seeding purposes, Lucky Loser consideration or for entry into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
The Entry Protection shall be in effect for either the first nine tournaments that the player competes in using the Entry Protection (excluding wild cards and entries as a Direct Acceptance with his current position in the Emirates ATP Rankings) or for the period up to nine months beginning with the first tennis event that the player competes in, whichever occurs first.

Edit. A SE is also for a player who has won an ATP tournament the week before I think.
Not necessarily won a tournament but reached a stage where participation at the end of a prior tournament (e.g. SF or F or W) prevents a player who would have been in the qualifying draw to make it to the location in time to play QRs.

c) A Qualifi ed event for special exempt to an ATP World Tour 250 tournament
is the singles event of any ATP World Tour 250, ATP World Tour 500 or ATP
World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.
d) A Qualifi ed event for special exempt to a ATP Challenger Tour tournament is
the singles event of an ATP World Tour or ATP Challenger Tour tournament
within the same geographic region

So I think he would only get an SE to a 250 if he was already at a 250 - getting to the final of a Challenger would only get him into another Challenger (which he would get into on ranking anyway).

WHAT POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!! He's just amazing isn't he? I could be persuaded to switch allegiance at this rate. I just love everything about his tennis and I didn't once feel frustrated with him or irritated by him. I think he was just plain tired by the end of the match. BUT I think he'll have come off court thinking he should have won the match rather than thinking how well he did to get that far and that's the sort of mentality that will carry him forward. Please stick with it Dan.

Cheer him on for all of us if he plays in Croatia please!!

It seems that Dan is headed back to the States to play in Challenger events during September.
After Davis Cup (w/c 9/9/13) he has a week's break/training and then is in Napa, California, for a $50k event.
That's wine country!
:wino:

For those who wondered if Dan could yet be high enough ranked to get into ATP 250's the Entry Lists above illustrate why he has a little more work to do.

He's currently at a career high of #146.

Across Metz and St Pete's (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?2065-METZ-amp-ST.-PETERSBURG-2013-16-22-September.-Main-thread&p=156985&viewfull=1#post156985) the lowest ranked players currently with Direct Acceptance are around 106/108.
Those still on the Alt lists will end up in Qualifying - as would Dan if he'd put his name down.

At the beginning of October there are 3 ATP250's in the same week and currently the lowest DA's are:-
Moscow #82
Stockholm #76 Carreno-Busta
Vienna #66 Hewitt

There are likely to be quite a few dropouts before the draw is made for those 3 events but even so it'd mean Dan needing to be #120 or above to stand a chance of being in a draw.

But if he can notch up a couple of Challenger WINS in the next 2 or 3 weeks then things could change for him.

What is Dan up to next I wonder - anyone know?
He's returning the USA to play 3 Challenger events starting next Monday 23rd September with Napa, then Sacremento and finishing with Tiburon.
It'd be great if he could win one of them after coming so close in Vancouver and Aptos in August.

There's also an outside chance he'd be offered a Wildcard into an ATP250 in October - I'm sure his new management (Lagardere) will be on the case!!! They're already got him a kit deal with adidas.

Leon said it in an interview - Dan wasn't in the right head space with off-court issues. Hopefully whatever it was, he is managing to sort out.

I heard he had a scan show clear, so he went to Belgrade and started practicing on the clay at which point he didn't feel right. I always thought that James would be a better bet on clay since Dan had missed clay the last two years and when he did play he had lost both in first round of challengers and qualifying, his only wins on clay being in the futures some time ago and in the DC the final rubber in Croatia. He obviously doesn't like playing on clay unlike Kyle. James has much more experience on clay which is why i was surprised when Dan was selected. Leon was obviously not happy about this but Dan had shown willing going there and trying on clay.

I'm really pleased Dan finally seems to be taking his tennis seriously. I know he's 26 but he has buckets of talent and I've always thought, bar the work ethic, he's the closest player to Andy's style I've watched. He uses variety, has great court awareness and is very courageous. I'm a big fan - if only he can keep up the new found determination.
I admit to getting cross when people say they hope Kyle gets the DC spot ahead of Dan. Kyle is young yet and still has a lot to learn and many DC's ahead of him. Yes he beat Tipsy in Belgrade but let's keep things in perspective - Tipsy was coming back from injury, was feeling unwell and in that match (I got drenched) didn't have the benefit of wind screen wipers, especially in the 3rd set. Dan has pulled 2 DC ties out of the bag for us when we were on the edge of losing and against much higher ranked players (at the time). We're going to need guts against Argentina and more than batting the ball back and forth. Dan has great hands at the net too.
This is Dan's background (warts and all) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Evans_(tennis)
This is Kyle's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Edmund
Dan doesn't have parents who can afford to fund him and to be honest I'm amazed he's still playing. I've really, really got my fingers crossed that he's seen sense and will push on. He's made huge strides in the last year. GOOOOO DAN!!!

I think for DC it has to be the best player in the circumstances. No emotion - just hard-hearted "best for the job" attitude. Whoever that might be on the day.

Ditto Rosalind. Although very different, I find Dan and Kyle's games and personalities equally admirable and likeable. Very happy to sit on the fence and let Leon work this one out. Tough one, but choosing between two in forms players is a nice dilemma.

Both have positives and negatives. Tough one for Leon

JerryD
09-08-2016, 09:48
There's still a little while to go before selection, more time to decide and watch them. I guess it also depends if they both want to, there may be ranking points on offer elsewhere, and their persuit of ranking is also important. I don't envy Leon's choice. He will go for the guy who can get the win.

roytennisfan
09-08-2016, 10:55
Dan will be very close to that top 60 prediction if he wins this challenger being currently 75. Leon has shown he will chose who he thinks is best at the time. Dan and Kyle are both direct into the main draw of the US open and a good run there may tip the balance for one or the other. They are also both down for Winston-Salem the week before but Dan has to play the qualifiers. At the moment to me Dan is more experienced and has had more victories over top 50 players (including recently over Dmitrov on a hard court) so with Delbonis being currently 44, that, him being a tricky leftie and it being over best of 5 would make me favour Dan as of today. However, all agreed, it is a very difficult decision and i'm happy to go with whoever Leon decides.

Remember - In Leon We Trust.

JerryD
09-08-2016, 11:47
This is true. It's a tough decision but it's Leon's job to make it and it's a job he's really good at. I think all the guys want success for team GB and will accept whatever choice he makes, knowing that it will be the right one, if they get to play or not.

I agree it's a close call but like pabbers I am a huge fan of Dan, not least because he hails from my home city. I love his game, he is so talented and at last he is realising his potential. I would selfishly pick Dan over all the other Brits .... bar Andy of course!

It is shame Dan has wasted so many years though. Think what he could have achieved. Yes I agree, he really hasn't applied himself fully until recently. He may have come from a humble background, but this is what he's good at and has chosen tennis as a profession - the talent was always there, but not the maturity.

JerryD

Some players have really excelled in their later years though, like Stan wawrinka for an example. I'm sure dans best tennis is ahead of him and these days it seems the peak age for tennis is much older

True, but he needs to want it enough, and I sincerely hope that's the case.

Dan is 3rd on centre today at Aptos, ca not be 3.30 (11.30) 2nd round against Gomez
Whilst Liam B and Lloyd G went out in the 1st round, Cameron Norrie qualified and then won, so he is in r16 with Dan

Edit: it was actually r16 that cameron (only20) won so he is in QF and showing NCH370 (gb11)

Dan wins easily 6-3 6-3 and will be playing his third all Brit challenger final this year (1-1 all hard court lost to Kyle beat Corrie) against 20yo Cameron in his first challenger final

The win takes Dan to his current (live)nch66, a win in the final will probably give a nch60, meeting the prediction made that he was a top60 talent.

Now where was Jo Konta a year ago? And Dan is only a year older. I really believe that if and it may be a BIG if, he's really started to knuckle down, he can go so much further than 66 (can't say 60 or I'd have to throw in a :cauldron: ). Fingers crossed.
