Are you suggesting I lie in wait and hit it with a frying pan?

:laugh::laugh: - what an image!!!

Well done on the swimming Pat and Sally. I'm afraid, so far as I'm concerned, it's what you do if you're drowning :shamed: !

My hip is better since a steroid injection last Friday (I'm scared to be too positive in case I jinx it) and so I'm thinking of resurrecting the Wii fit soon and trying a short round of golf. Wore high heels in work this morning, for teaching, for the first time since I can't remember when! Survived but it's the ballerinas for this arvo......don't want to overdo it!

URgh! Not happy or sad but mad! Paddy Mcguinness on Take Me Out was well out of order on cheesy Take Me Out. He said that the couple were going to an island as remote as andy murray's chance of winning Wimbledon

How can he be so rude about britain's best tennis player for yonks so publicly? Out of order! Turn tv off for take me out

Bit of a crappy day. Really hurt my arm playing tennis so can't play for at least 2 weeks now. Good job Oz Open is on to distract me. My gold crown came out as I was chewing gum playing tennis. So I have to go see the dentist and the doctor this week (coz my vit. D level is really low apparently). Then to add insult to injury, my 12 yr old and I were watching the Golden Globes and she asked me how old Madonna is. For the record, she's 10 years older than me. My daughter told me she looked WAY younger than me. Humpf!

Linda
16-01-2012, 22:52
Sorry to hear that, Fiona :hugs:

As for Madonna, who knows what age she is. I'm sure that when she first started out she was the same age as me. Then after a while she was a year younger. Then two years younger. Last I heard she was three years younger, but it could be more now.

RoastLamb
16-01-2012, 22:55
She was born in August 1958 which makes her 53. My sister was born a month later and I always used to compare her with Madonna that's how I know. :rolling:

Linda
16-01-2012, 23:19
OK if that's her true date of birth then she is 3 years younger than me.

A girl at Journo school had her suitcase nicked from the classroom while we were upstairs doing shorthand the other week - so we all clubbed together to get her some gift vouchers to replace some of the stuff she lost. And she was so overwhelmed last night she just burst into tears (setting a good few of us off too... and that was just the boys).
Just goes to show that a little kindness can touch someone's heart...

Also I got another article published in the Huffington Post (I posted it in Hello Thread).

Now unless my manager comes in, I should remain in a good mood for most of the day!

Today our son came to see us. He told me what had happened as he was nearing home yesterday. As he drove down the rather steep road leading to his road he saw an old lady sitting at the side with her face covered in blood. He braked and got out. He bent down and asked if she had been mugged. She told him she had slipped on the ice. He asked where she lived and strangely she lived in the same road as he. He told her he would take her home. She was upset about her shopping which had spilled and her husband who would be looking out for her. He assured her that he would gather up her shopping and she got into the car. Meanwhile he had phoned his wife and she had gone and told lady's husband. In the car she was agitated as blood was on the seat to which he replied "It's only a car, it will clean". When they got to her home her husband was outside with our daughter-in-law. She looked her over and advised her to ring the doctor. As they were leaving the old lady turned to my son and said "I didn't think there were any saints left but you are a saint". He wondered how many cars or people has passed her before he saw her.

He's absolutely right, any decent person would - but that doesn't take anything away from what he did. There are plenty of people out there who wouldn't have noticed, or wouldn't have bothered to stop and see if help was needed. It was still an amazing thing to do.

One of my colleagues picked up an old man walking from the main road to the village (about 2 miles) in the dark the other night - the bus had dropped him off but his phone battery was flat and he couldn't call anyone to come and pick him up. He'd been at the hospital cos he'd dislocated his shoulder. Brave young lass to stop and pick a man up in the dark - she got a telling off from quite a few folks but I'm very proud of her.

Rightly, or wrongly, I just assumed that St Helens people were Scousers with bus passes!

supergran
20-01-2012, 16:41
As St Helens is about 12 miles from Liverpool and we have our own town council, Mayor, town hall etc and as we do not speak with a Liverpudlian accent and as St Helens has an interesting history of its own beginning in the 17th century as a collection of small villages, we are only regarded as Scousers by ignorant people with little knowledge of history and geography. The area where I live is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Liverpool people have long been referred to as scousers for a few reasons, mainlyto do with the stew. Liverpool is a city port with all the commerce and culture associated with a city. St Helens was a town which relied on mining and the glass industry and the people are proud Lancastrians. Bus passes are issued to older people nation wide and can be used in Manchester, Birmingham etc by residents of St Helens. At a rugby league match a few years ago my son was called a "scouse ***" He calmly replied "You can call me a "***" but please don't call me a scouser." I would refer you to the internet where you can read about the history of St Helens. By the way we do have a guest room and I'm always available to educate those who are in need.

Feeling a bit stressed - first NCTJ exam tomorrow - I was supposed to be working with a study-buddy from class yesterday but it wasn't working as well as the week before, so thankfully she went home early.

Trying to revise 15 mins in each hour while doing some work... passed the mock but tend to view those with some suspicion.
This is where the age-factor starts to tell... I feel way more tired than the youngsters on the course, and I am falling behind in shorthand.

Ros - chances are you'll pass with flying colours. When I did law in my thirties I was sooooo terrified of being left behind by all the young 21 year olds and of the old adage that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, that somehow I managed to come top - followed by first class honours in my professional exams! So don't doubt yourself - your life is probably far more sorted and you are more mature and better organised than the youngsters, so your 15 mins is more effective than 2 hours of their revision (with one eye on the tv/phone/pc doubtless!).

Turn off laptop and all electrical items they stimulate the brain too much, have a warm bath or if not a hot chocolate. Try and lie perfectly still and calm in a dark room as dark as you can get it and think of either nothing or walking along a beach calmly (or something else that makes you feel calm). I have suffered really bad with insomnia and I am not saying these work every time but they do sometimes.
Good luck and you will be fine at work tomorrow!

supergran
25-01-2012, 02:46
You may be asleep now but if you're not....The first thing you must do is stop worrying and fretting about things that will not happen. Often people can't get to sleep because they know they have to. Just put all those thoughts out of your mind and try to relax. Don't think about not being able to sleep. If the room is dark and quiet and you try and empty your mind you will drift off and you will get some sleep. If your alarm is set you will not get there late and it is amazing how the human body and mind can cope with lack of sleep. You will be all right and you can nap tomorrow evening, (this evening). The key is ...stop worrying!

I have just had the most amazing customer service - I bought a Duracell charger from Play back in August and after only TWO uses... it seems to have packed up
So I sent a complaint to Play - who very kindly sent me the returns details - but I also sent a note via the duracell website and got a response - rang them back and they are refunding my £29.99 and directed me to their direct site where I can order a new one (a newer version it would seem).

Compared with BT's recently shoddy customer service (see my Huffington Post piece) it really makes a difference when people actually THINK about customer service!

And the upside is - the direct site that they pointed me to also does Hearing aid batteries - my mum refuses to wear her hearing aid as often as she should because the batteries go in about 10 hours of use... so they will be getting my custom as the bulk buying option seems to be preferable.

Just goes to show - it's ALWAYS worth contacting companies and (politely) standing one's ground!

Congratulations on your excellent result. What was weird about the snow though?!!!

For most of the journey it was swirling and you could see it in the headlights and lamposts but NOTHING was settling on the car at all ... It got a little heavier as I got further round the M25 and then when I got close to Colchester where mum lives - nothing. Not a flake in sight. I have got a tub of nuts and raisins and a family pack of penguins (apt, no?) and a shovel, fleecy and ski gear in the car just in case I have any difficulty going home tomorrow!

I am hopefully getting rid of the extremely rude and inept managing agents that have cost me a fortune for doing sweet nothing for 4 years... I am trying to word the letter just right to keep the irritation out of it.

I accept they can be rude to me as a landlord (although actually they shouldn't be rude to anyone really) but their rudeness to the tenants is simply unacceptable - especially as they're pretty good tenants.

They messed with the wrong marine....

After the reality of local journalism, being sat in a council scrutiny committee for three and a half hours, before I finally decided to try and get a cab home... I got my first view of stories I'd been set to write - I'm on a 2 week placement at the Surrey Comet/Richmond & Twickenham Times.

I was happy enough to get 3 of the 5 things I had written this week in but they had been cut down from 250-350 words down to about 50-75 in almost all cases, and no by-line, so I had to send a note to the Head of Journalism to ask if that would still count as I was really looking to this placement to get my portfolio nailed.
They DO count, and the by-lines don't matter so much for now...

BUT... then I picked up a copy of the Richmond and Twickenham times were a leader to my first piece was, with the full article to run next week (so thankfully I will still be here to get the cutting signed off)... AND a by-line for a London Scottish rugby piece.

That's 5 for 5 and one by-line... I can't believe it.

So. Happy!

That's awful - hope you're kept informed of whether they're OK? Fire damage (and the water to put it out) causes such a mess and so much destruction. There was a fire at a cottage in my Mum's village at the weekend and sadly one person died and the other is critically ill in hospital. Thankfully the people who lived either side were OK and their cottages are safe (they're black and white thatched) so they can stay in their homes.

I really don't know if they're OK or not. I mean the fire must have been going for a while before we noticed it and called 911. They have a dog too. I hope they were all on holiday. I just saw a television truck outside so it'll be in the news soon and hopefully then I can find out. They are on a different street to mine so they are not technically neighbours but we share a back garden fence.

I didn't think the family were there because they usually have Christmas lights on in their garden at night and last night they weren't on. My bedroom looks right into their back garden. And we called 911 and the fire services kept asking me the street location and arrived 10 minutes later so I'm surprised the family didn't. Unless they were still asleep when we saw the fire. I suppose if it was outside it would take a while for the smoke alarms to register.

My students have been shortlisted for the Attorney General's award for the best student Pro Bono team for the legal work we do free fighting for very sick people to have their care in a home funded by the NHS instead of paying for themselves. Usually (but not always) they are the vulnerable with dementia or Alzheimer's disease and the symptoms of their illness means their needs get classified as social care ones rather than medical ones. But dementia and Alzheimer's are terminal illnesses!

Anyway we're off to the House of Lords in March to see if we've won or not. Just being shortlisted is a huge achievement. Very proud of them.

How young he looked!!!

I read this in the Telegraph:

Jones is survived by his four children. He lived in the US with his third wife, Jessica Pacheco, who is 31 years his junior and whom he met in a stage production of Cinderella.

In a recent interview, he recalled the moment they fell in love: “She turned to me one day and said, Let’s run upstairs and make love’.

“I looked at her. ‘At my age,’ I said, ‘it’s going to have to be one or the other’.”

Today he learned that he has been successful in his application for a new job after a four hour assessment followed by an interview in which he had to do role play!:) It was his first interview for 18 years so am so proud of him as well as being happy for him. Also their house is sold and they move to their new home on the 22nd of this month. Happy days for them.:cheer:

My students have been shortlisted for the Attorney General's award for the best student Pro Bono team for the legal work we do free fighting for very sick people to have their care in a home funded by the NHS instead of paying for themselves. Usually (but not always) they are the vulnerable with dementia or Alzheimer's disease and the symptoms of their illness means their needs get classified as social care ones rather than medical ones. But dementia and Alzheimer's are terminal illnesses!

Anyway we're off to the House of Lords in March to see if we've won or not. Just being shortlisted is a huge achievement. Very proud of them.

 well done

Is that the one that was selling up to go travelling or is that another one? Or did I just get the wrong end of the stick?

Have been so busy lately. haven't had much time to read everything.
Well done to your son SG  We have put our house up for sale but I doubt it will go very quickly. The market here is Vegas is very bad.
My youngest is now a gunners mate in the Navy and his graduation from tech school is Friday. :cheer: Then he will go on to San Diego & more training. He doesn't have a date for that yet though.
Our school had it's Grand Opening for our new location last Monday and it was a great success with TV & news there. :boogie: It was a relief to get it done as it took a bit of organizing but we made it. :phew:

Sad to learn today that an old friend from the Rugby club has died. He was in hospital for an op but fell out of bed and broke his hip. His wife, who I've known since our school days says no blame can be levelled at the hospital staff. He was one of those men who was a "character" at the Rugby club and was very popular. We last saw them at a funeral in December and he was looking much better though he had chest problems. We have so many happy memories of being at parties with them when we were all a bit younger. Talked to his wife today and it was very sad.

Hugs Maureen...

well yesterday I got knocked out of the shorthand world cup ( - our tutors are just totally giddy about it... us?? not so much!)... but my law mock was a disaster.
Have been poorly this week with a sore throat, some bizarre cut on the roof of my mouth, and now my jaw hurts so for 2 days I just couldn't do much but eat soup and curl up - so revision and practice weren't great...
Most of my answers were a touch bland - and I couldn't really attach any dates to examples...

Lizzim cheered me up a bit this morning with the old addage of "bad mock = good exam" so here's hoping...

Just been all growed up and done my finances and filing so going to have a doze, then brunch (jaw permitting, because soup and I are falling out big time) ... then a day of writing up yesterday's notes, and maybe drafting my two features... maybe a bit more on my portfolio...
(shhh - whisper it... revision and shorthand too)...

Hope you're feeling better. :)

I've passed an OU short course leading to their certificate in contemporary science and have had my first history assignment back with a good mark and very fair, helpful and positive feedback. This is the last course needed for a degree in history. :)

Ohh well done on your course - I did an OU course on Film and TV History - loved it.

I think it was me who had the Shorthand World Cup and Law Mock :rolling:
At least I gave the shorthand a good go but oh my god my heart was pounding, my hands were all clammy... and would you believe... when I was writing up my notes yesterday - my pen had totally run out. Thank god it didn't happen while I was taking it down...

Thanks guys... While watching Masterchef (ALLLLLLLEZZZ Shelina... ) I spotted a sneaky new presser when they told me they only had 2 scheduled for the week.

So I had to change one of the trial articles (On this week article) quite a lot because I had smugly done it on the previous evenings...
And I changed the Olympic News round up trial to include the BOA vs Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing and also Jaques Rogge's comments about athletes changing nationality.

I just went through the style guide and made sure it all looks good... and will check it again at lunch time and then submit in the afternoon.

I was going to put it up on the cuttings site - but I don't want to jinx it!!!

Funeral today which made it a day of mixed emotions. The Requiem Mass was lovely, celebrating our friend's life. Afterwards at the Rugby Club everyone had a really fantastic time recalling old times etc. The Church, Crematorium and the Club absolutely packed. Saw so many old friends and so many boys who grew up with our friends' boys who all went to the same school and played rugby at the club. They are all parents now but still hogged the bar like they used to!! It was really a lovely day....so many laughs, so many hugs and kisses.A good send off for a good man.

A really sad one for our island - a young local lad (32) - a marine who survived tours in Iraq and Afghanistan has succumbed to cancer within a few months of being diagnosed. His mother was due to be re-married in the summer but they brought the wedding forward to Friday of last week and he managed to give her away. He died on Tuesday - so sad. What made it even worse was that his mother lost her sister to cancer in November - some families have more than their fair share.

Feel a bit ashamed now. We were out for a meal with my brother, sister-in-law and her mother and had a really lovely time. Waiter came to clear table and spoke to my brother telling him about a player injured. I asked was it in the England/ Ireland match or the St Helens/Bradford match as both were being played when we were out. He said it was a football match so we didn't show much interest. He didn't give us any details after that so only read on here about how serious it was. I've never heard of him so know nothing about him but do hope he's OK.

Just heard back from Magazine guy, and I don't mind admitting I was feeling pretty anxious as I hadn't heard anything back and someone else had submitted their trial (for tennis, sigh) midday midweek and heard back.

Anyway... this is what I got:

Hi Ros;

Thanks for sending over your trial pieces - really pleased with the quality, both in terms of your writing and the research you put in.

He's just asked what I can commit to so I sent back the original brief - so could be looking at around 2500-3000 words a week, with pay.
Not enough to live on, but sure enough to add to my portfolio, and more importantly totally independently of my course which all helps.

Wooty, McWoot. Now I don't care as much about having an exam on my birthday. (well I do - and I STILL can't get my head around ALLLLLL the varied defences for defamation, other than the obvious "say nowt nasty about anyone" one)!
