We have had some good news which I forgot to share during A0. My nephew and his partner (My brother's son) became the proud parents of their first-born on Saturday 19th January. A beautiful little girl weighing in at 8lbs 2 oz. They have named her Renee. Second grandchild for bro and sis-in-law. They also have Gemma who is 13 and my niece's daughter. Not sure when we will be able to see her as they live in Hove.
Can't remember if I've posted it on here before, but my son and his fiance have set the date for their wedding!!
When I heard it was to be the middle Saturday of Wimbledon, my first reaction was  but I have forgiven them!
So, June 29th it is!
Congratulations to them both. At least it wasn't Wimbledon final or semis day.

I didn't have dust shets down as the carpet is being replaced once the decorating is finished. Fortunately it was only matt emulsion but took ages to clean up. I was at the bottom of the ladder when the paint fell down!!!
:grouphug: Pat. At least it wasn't you who fell off.
Do be careful on the ladder, Pat. :grouphug: Practical point - make sure you have your phone with you just in case you fall off and break something.

I'm sad that we have finally had to face the fact after nearly 3 years of trying, that our rescue dog has serious behavioural problems. She is becoming more unpredictable and we need to get some help. Going to get a behaviour expert to come and see her. I really hope we can get her sorted cos I love her to pieces

Really happy to receive an invitation to a close friend's 60th birthday. It was worded "Champagne reception from 6 in the Rosiere Suite of the St Brelade's Bay Hotel followed by dinner at 7.30 then dancing until late..." Then so sad when we saw it was on the 1st June! We arrive into Manchester from Palma about 2.00. We tried for flights to Jersey that afternoon but no direct flights after midday. The only ones we could find were late afternoon, had stops in Southampton and Guernsey taking about 5 hours which would mean landing in St Helier around 9 or 10 and then having to get to hotel late. Sooo disappointed.
Oh what a shame, SG and you could've done with a bit of fun.
Really sad to hear what Oscar Pistorius did. In truth I am in shock still! He seemed like such a lovely guy :( Was an inspiration to many and now...
Isn't it always the way?! Nothing happens on the social scene for ages then 2 things on the same day!! What a shame.

I'm seriously thinking of starting a new threat entitled: Supergran's Funeral Diary. Yes, we have another on Wednesday. A friend's father who has been poorly. On the bright side we are going for a meal to a friend's on Tuesday evening. On Thursday we will be celebrating my sister-in-law's mother's 90th birthday with a party in an hotel from 3 to 7 pm. so not all sad news.
Thank goodness you can look on the bright side SG. By the way - I think you made a Freudian slip in your first sentence

Im feeling both happy & sad . My daughter & my little grandaughter have moved to their own apt . They stayed with us for 2 months .
I am missing them so much ( even tho they are just up the street ) lol
Happy that they have their own place , but papa & I miss them so !!!
I'm sure you will still see a lot of them if they are only just up the street! The house must seem unusually empty though.
Happy that I booked my plane tickets for June/July, sad because as much as I want my mum to come to Wimbledon with me I'm not sure she'll be physically able to. Not sure what to do. :shrug:I have booked a hotel in Wimbledon for two nights so she won't have to travel on the day but she still thinks it will be too much and as much as I want her there I want to be able to enjoy the experience. I'm thinking though that maybe I can try and go another day if I can get tickets somehow and then I can take her and let her enjoy the experience and maybe meet up with some of you, who know what you're doing on another day. Well, things will work out I know, they always do and i worry too much.:barmy::lol:

To answer your question Caro, tonight we have been to a friend's for a lovely evening. A 4 course meal and lots of wine and some very good music. Hard to believe but SG suddenly became interested and learned how to use her IPod. He was in his element. We had some really good music.....Sinatra, Ella, Darin, Nelson....He was in charge. We are thinking birthday present. Tomorrow the funeral. Hey Ho.That's life when you're old!!

Funeral over. Lovely service with some excellent music. Had a great time in a very swish pub nearby enjoying a good buffet and sharing lots of laughs and stories with some good friends. Tomorrow we are off to the 90th birthday party. Just spoken to my brother who has arrived at the birthday girl's home (his ma-in-law) with his wife. Travelled from Wiltshire. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks everyone for the good thoughts, really looking forward to coming over.

You must be so excited Genbrit. Why does your mum not think she can manage? Does she have difficulty walking? Hope you can sort something out that is good for you both as I understand that you wish to share the experience with her. Good luck.
She can't walk far as her ankles swell up. I haven't seen her for two years and last time I saw her I got a wheelchair when we went shopping so she could go out for longer. She didn't have the ankle problem then. I speak to her at least once a week, sometimes on Skype and she is in good general health apart from this so it is frustrating for her. Whatever is meant to be is meant to be though and things will work the way they are supposed to, will just have to wait & see.
Can't wait, it will be great to be in England during Wimbledon fortnight so no time differences to worry about :tennis: and really looking forward to meeting #2 grandson as well. :jitterbug:

Can't believe it. Back from a wonderful holiday, rang work this morning to check all has been ok while I was away, ahead of going back in tomorrow only to learn that 3 of my loveliest girl students were involved in tragic car crash on Mothering Sunday - 1 killed, one with a broken back and in critical condition and the driver has a punctured lung but will be ok. No idea of the details yet but I can't get the dead girl's face out of my head. She participated in law clinic and was a real star and delight. All 3 just 22 years old. Have to deal with the start of the options teaching tomorrow and by chance they would all 3 have been in my group. I teach Private Client and the first topic is taking instructions for a will.........this is not going to be easy. I'm welling up just thinking about it.

Just preparing myself for the session at 2pm. It's a small group session so not impersonal like a lecture. Of the 15 students in the group, 3 were involved in the accident and of the remaining 12, I've learned that 7 of them were in the 2 other cars that made it to the destination (they didn't learn of the accident till the next day) and one had planned to go but pulled out at the last minute.
It's interesting how people approach things differently. Some of my colleagues haven't referred to the accident at all in their lessons but given the high number of students in my group who will have been affected by it, I don't feel I can just gloss over it, plus it being a will drafting session. Also I'd taught all 3 of them but because of the law clinic (extracurricular) I had unusually high contact with the dead girl and the one with the broken back, added to which some of this afternoon's group also do law clinic and as this is the first time they've seen me since the accident I think they'd see it as a bit strange if I said nothing. That apart, I feel the need to say something - probably just along the lines of how sad it is but that we must all be professional (they're doing professional exams) and carry on as usual.

Mum had no milk but it was tiny - S thinks it was probably premature - lambs that small are usually twins or triplets and it was a single so it was most probably too early. This sort of thing is not unusual as I'm sure Ally will confirm - if he ever manages to escape the lambing shed/field/hill!

We lamb outside too! At least you had a lamb to twin on - mind you our ewe had no milk anyway so she was always going to be a waste of space in that respect .... glad to see you've made it back into the house! Have you got snow there?
You get used to it .... there's no livestock without dead stock unfortunately - and at lambing time there's always a lot of losses. Yes, I thought that - if one of us loses a pet we are heartbroken, but as a farmer you have to think of the livestock differently to that, or you'd never be able to do it.
We had about a foot last week, 5 ft drifts not uncommon, 20ft deep gullies on the hill that you could probably drive across if you had the guts lol. Nothing compared to what the North East is used to ;)
I just set my alarm for the morning (I'm going to the sunrise service at 5.30) and also put the time forward by an hour - then noticed that means it's already wine o'clock! :cheer:

Absolutely - still disappointing when you lose them though. But we're used to the knacker's lorry coming to call! As for the pet situation, I will be devastated when Barley Bunny's time comes - he's such a wee character and nearly 7 so been with us a long time!

Just out of interest, when do the sheep and cows breed? And why on earth don't they wait a another month or so?
hfwardhouse
31-03-2013, 19:57
Sheep gestation is four months - we put the rams in on Bonfire Night and the lambs start from April Fools Day .... our choice - I tried to persuade OH to put it back a fortnight (DC might have been my motivation :halo:) and the weather should really be better by now ... Cattle is much the same as human - we aim to have more calving in the spring than in the autumn just so the calves are ready for weaning by the autumn! Doesn't always work out though lol!

Farming's always a struggle these days Pat .... I'm warm and dry in doors too .... but E is off out helping her dad - there's been a couple lambed last night and this morning but it's a slow start unlike last year!
Very proud - younger son made his first live appearance on ITV Calendar (Yorkshire) News at 6 as ITV's newly appointed northern political correspondent, talking about the Leeds hospital heart debacle. He's by some way, at 27 years, the youngest correspondent that ITV have. This is the thing I was excited about the other week - couldn't say anything till it had been formally announced at work that he was leaving ITN. He's been on attachment to ITN and ITV London, with some national appearances, for nearly 2 years and could have been sent back to Wales at any time. He's relieved he now has a permanent base, not least of all as he and his partner bought a house in Tottenham last September.

Well as there is no Death/Funeral thread here I go again. First of all SuperG commented a few days ago that we hadn't been to any funerals lately having been to a 50th and 80th birthday party and going to another 80th on the 4th May. Yesterday had a phone call from the son of my friend who died just before my 70th to say that his dad had died. They had been divorced years but this being a fairly small town we sometimes moved in the same circles and he was at Jan's funeral and SuperG's uncle's last September. He was 75 and died of respiratory problems. His son then told me there wouldn't be a funeral as he had donated his body to medical science. Instead there will be a wake in a local hotel on the 10th May from 5 pm. Found out that the University of Liverpool picks up the body and three years later cremate the remains and give the ashes to the family. Suppose doing this could save a lot of money as funerals are getting pretty expensive.;)

How wonderful of him and his family.
In the past year, two people at church died who had left their bodies to medical science. There was a memorial service for each of them instead of a funeral.

He made the decision a long time ago and told his sons as he wasn't religious no need for any service.....so wake it is. Though in hospital when he was told he hadn't long and asked where he would like to be he said...... heaven. The doctor meant where he wanted to die, in hospital or at home. He chose hospital.

Had a conversation re that today. I'm all for donating my body......husband would not hear of it!!
I'd never want to donate mine after the stories medical students used to tell me.
There was once a situation where a medical student was going to disect a body and found it was his grandparent.
Yes - I shared a room with a medic in my first year at uni..........they're very good at spinning a yarn. Wouldn't set too much store by their stories.

I have a funeral plan all set up. Saves the worry for your children.
My carpets are being laid today then everything inside the house is finished. Just need to move all the furniture into the right place and finish unpacking half a dozen large green creates to fill up the display units and I am done.
The block paving back and front needs relaying. Someone is all lined up to do that at some time during the better weather. At least that doesn't create a mess indoors!
Won't know what to do with my self. I am thinking of trying some Cardio tennis after watching the demonstration at Coventry. The local tennis club, two roads down, are trying to set some up in the next 2 weeks.
It'll be great to be finally settled, Pat. The cardio tennis has appealed to me too for when I retire in August. Not sure if there's any locally - must look into it. There's certainly a local tennis club.

Well, another week another funeral. Received news that my cousin died last week and his funeral is on Thursday. He was the son of my father's sister and the last link with my father's family that I knew as I was growing up.Was in the Irish Guards when younger and a great family man. He also gave my brother and me lots of help in tracing family in the US to where four of my father and his mother's siblings emigrated. His mother's name was Anastacia and it made me smile when I think of my flat-cap wearing, clay-pipe smoking Irish grandmother bestowing that name on one of her daughters.

The boss's wee boy has had a lot of treatment and operations there and had made up a wee scrapbook of his 9 years so far. He is a very brave wee man. Well done Pat, I am sure it was well deserved. I hope you enjoy it.
Last Saturday Mr A, who is presently suffering with auto-immune encephalitis causing epileptic type seizures and amnesia, decided to go out for a short walk at about 9.00 p.m. By 11.00 p.m. darkness had fallen and he still hadn't returned so I called the police. The emergency services were wonderful - police, coastguard and the search and rescue helicopter from Belfast were all out searching for him - 17 people in all. They eventually found him on a remote beach at 4.30 a.m. and airlifted him to hospital. We think he must have either fallen and knocked himself out or had a seizure and was disorientated when he came to and started walking in the wrong direction. Amazingly, he escaped with minor cuts and bruises and a few cracked ribs. Lucky man but scary stuff. Thank heavens for our emergency services - when they are needed they really turn up trumps. After 40+ years of marriage I've now invested in a ball and chain!!!!

I've joined Fitness First this week. I had got fed up with getting more and more unfit whilst the doctor still just keeps telling me to rest and take anti-inflammatories, so I decided I need to get back to some exercise but just be a bit careful about what I do. The cost of membership includes all the classes as well as the gym so it's good value. I went to a 'tone' class on Wednesday and another 'tone' class this morning (they were quite different from one another; Wednesday's class was more aerobic and today's class was all with weights) and also had my gym induction today. I intend to do 2 or 3 classes each week and use the gym once a week.

Am hoping to make it an online raffle via just giving like this raffle (http://www.justgiving.com/Nom-Nom-Nom-2012)
That way people can request certain number of tickets and also choose what prize they would like each ticket for. So if they wanted two for a signed Andy wristband and two for signed Berdych shirt they just put it down in info.
Only thing I am worried about is post and packaging as opening it up to everyone worldwide may make it expensive. Also, may donate my first racket which I had got signed by Andy (head one) which may be heavy

Sounds like a great fundraiser for a great cause xe. :thanks: for the information.
EDIT: It must be hard to ensure that not too much of the money raised is going on postage. Could you have just a few 'main' [heavy] prizes and then supplement them with lots of signed photos which wouldn't cost much to send, even abroad - and yet can be treasured prizes for the winners.

All the money from raffles will go straight to the charity so I will be paying the P&P. maybe the racket especially will only be offered up to UK people unless people from abroad happy to pay for half the P&P or something g
Hoping the shirts, wristbands... Won't cost a crazy amount to send abroad!

Feeling a bit low this week. Went back to work on Monday after 6 weeks off due to my surgery so was nervous about what I was going back to but looking forward to seeing everyone again. My boss and line manager were fantastic with me and offered me a phased return to work so only worked part time this week which helped a huge amount as I was physically exhausted. Everyone I spoke with outside of the office were very nice with saying how much I was missed etc. However I didn't feel welcomed by the people I work closest with and maybe felt they resented me a bit as they were so busy while I was off. I walked back in and not one of them gave me a hug (I would do so if it was the other way around). It felt a bit cold to be honest, and they didn't seem interested. I thought they were my friends so I guess it hurts a little.

Sorry to hear that Vix. I think work is such an awful place for a lot of people these days - things get skewed with pressure of work.

That is so sad and pretty shabby behaviour on the part of your colleagues. I feel for you. Try not to be too despondent and remember that you have friends and then you have colleagues. You know who your friends are so stay close to them. As for the others they can take a running jump. Chin up...you're getting better, there are people who love you, Wimbledon's on and a hot July forecast..be strong. Here are some more heartfelt hugs for you. xx:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphu g:

Really sad to hear about the death of Pierce Brosnan's daughter, Charlotte, of ovarian cancer at age 41. Her mother died of the same disease at around the same age. Have to wonder if she'd been monitoring her ovaries from a young age knowing her mum had the disease? Makes you think Angelina Jolie is really doing the right thing having her breasts (and soon to be ovaries too) removed before it can become a problem. It also makes me wonder if her Charlotte's own daughter, Isabella, will have such surgery herself when she's in her 30s. How awful for the whole family!
Vixs, Sorry you had such a shameful reaction from the work buddies you work closest with. You really do find out who you can trust and are true friends at times like this. I do think work stress has terrible effects on people and have found that since I retired earlier this month life is so much better, not having to make efforts for people who you know falsely smile at you but would stab you in the back given half a chance. Not that there isn't still stress, like the murray coaster for example, but it is usually much more manageable. :wino:
Here are hugs for you :grouphug::flowers:
So true. I wish I could retire. Someone in my office left last week because she couldn't get on with someone else in the office. I've also had trouble with that person in the past, but she's been fine since the other one left, so I'm hoping it's going to be OK now (although I will miss the one who left, 'cos I got on with her, but I'm sure we'll meet up from time to time for lunch or something). It's horrible when there's a bad atmosphere in the office 'cos you spend more time there than anywhere else.
I am so sorry to hear that Vixs. Not nice at all! You deserve a lot better :grouphug:

Thanks everyone. I guess I find it tough as they are the ones I tend to socialise with. Outside of work I'm pretty much on my own. Thank goodness for sites like these to keep me occupied.

Sorry you have been having a bad time Vixs especially after all you have been through. Need to take stock and find a different circle of friends. It is amazing how much is around if you go looking.
Had another morning at a football festival with my eldest GDs team. Once more they got through all the rounds to the fin al and lost by one goal in that. Their first season as a team and they have won nearly every match. Joining a league for next season so will be interesting to see how they get on.
My cardio tennis drills are progressing. Had to run backwards and forwards a lot this time, burned 397 calories in the 30 mins, legs felt like jelly!!!
