Hadn't thought of that. Would have been a nice touch. Maybe he was too self-conscious.

I would imagine he feels more comfortable in a suit .... I reckon he probably hired the kilt outfit he had on at Jamie's wedding so probably doesn't own one anyway.

I had a rather sad experience yesterday. When I first moved down to the South Coast, I struck up a friendship with a widowed lady at the bridge club - although she was much older than me (older than my mother actually) we shared a wicked sense of humour (maybe because we share the same birthday?). We played bridge together for quite a few years, until she went into an old people's home due to various physical problems although she was still mentally very quick. I visit her a few times a year (usually when I have saved up enough news to tell her about, as she obviously does not now have much in the way of news to tell me). So I visited her yesterday. In the last couple of visits, I'd noticed that her memory was not as good as it was; but then neither is mine! This time, at the start all seemed well. We were conversing quite normally and when I said that I was going to the carwash she remembered going to the same place.

Then she said that a woman had come into her room at 8.30 in the evening and said, 'Your husband has divorced you and married me'. I assumed that she would go on to say that the poor woman's mind was going. But no, she then said, 'So it can't have been my husband that we buried in Switzerland then. I wonder who it was?' I was totally nonplussed at this. I said, she must have been making it up, but Doreen said no, she knew all about our life in Switzerland. Doreen kept on about wondering who it could have been that they buried thinking it was her husband. She said actually he was cremated so they will never know. But under Swiss law they should have had a postmortem, which would have discovered the mistake, but they didn't. She was worried that her daughter (who is a Swiss resident) would get into trouble over this. I said, Oh, of course not, it's all such a long time ago. She said, no, it was only last year! How old do you think I am? I came here when I was 50 (actually she is about 90 and went there at about 85). I really had no more answers and she kept going back to wondering who the dead man was.

So it's really sad that a good friend is losing her mind

I think it's one of the cruellest things, Linda - strips people of their dignity and makes them very vulnerable. Even the NHS doesn't recognise it properly as an illness.

Very unhappy today. Came downstairs at 7am this morning to find we'd been burgled. So horrible.....

Our fault in a way, as we'd left a downstairs window slightly open for air, as it was such a hot day. Normally we shut the window when we close the curtains, but we'd been watching telly and as it was still sunny, we drew the curtain across slightly to cut out the glare - and then of course we didn't notice it was open when we closed the curtains later.

Nasty burglary people then came in through the window, nicked a load of our stuff - including my handbag with car keys in it - then drove off in my flipping car

I can't even begin to describe how I'm feeling right now! I lost my lovely new car, and the phone Dave got me for my birthday, which is pretty distressing, but they can be replaced - what is worse is that I lost a laptop which I (stupidly) hadn't backed up for ages, so I've lost photos, emails and so on which can never be replaced.

Please everyone - be warned - don't put off your backups! You think you'll never need them, but then you find you do and it's too late.

Oh dear.

So sorry to hear that KnightOwl how awful! I am glad to hear that you and hubby are ok though :grouphug:
Its so horrible having stuff taken from you, ive had my purse and phone stolen twice in my lifetime once at a club and once at university whilst i was performing and it was done by another student which makes it even worse and i had 20p in my purse! Its the inconvenience and also the fact that they have been through your stuff which makes me sick.

So sorry to hear of your burglary, my son has been burgled several times and he has CCTV. We have always had a dog and even though neighbours were done we never were. 13-07-2013, 06:59
Thanks for all the kind words :) It's horrible, but we're feeling a bit better about the whole thing 24 hours on - it's upsetting and lots of hassle to sort out, but mostly it's only 'things' and we're insured, so we'll get everything back in one way or another.

The laptop is the most upsetting thing, cos I hadn't done a backup for months, and the car is going to be the most inconvenient, but the rest we can live without or replace....

Haven't quite worked out how I'm going to get to work next week though!

Very sad news about Mel Smith, most recent thing I saw him in was a tv drama called Dancing on he Edge on BBC2 this year he looked alot thinner. Apparently he had been ill for a while. Twitter was rife with the news way before the BBC got it due to the author Kathy lette tweeting it who I believe was a friend of his. Power of social media,

Im happy tonight as got to see Macbeth with Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston live at the cinema. My favourite shakespeare play and it was an interesting adaptation of it.

I saw Kenneth Branagh (before he became KB) at a Shakespeare play of Henry V at the Sunderland Empire Theatre when I was at high school for my A'level English. But it was set in World War I not Agincourt. Very strange. But I enjoyed it all the same.

Ive never seen him in a play before. Almost as good as the real live theatre, great way for people to see theatre cheaply who cant get to the theatre or cant afford the ever increasing prices.
The actor who used to play Mordred in Merlin on tv was also in it playing a main part nice to see him doing well for himself.
Ive got two theatre trips in the next week or so, going to see Sweet Bird of Youth at the Old Vic tomorrow night with one of my best mates for his birthday treat and then following week seeing Daniel Radcliffe in his play. Theatre junkie at the moment whilst no Andy to watch!

I'm not a big theatre fan tbh. I went to see this bizarre play at the Royal Court Theatre in London only coz my friend had a job there as an usher. And it was so awful I fell asleep. Put me off plays. Saw another one about Charlie Chaplin (a one man show) in a local theatre and that also bored me to tears. But I make an exception for Shakespeare. And I do enjoy musicals.

As an actor I try and see as much as I can of varying kinds but love shakespeare and musicals.

I thought he took the part well.
Shame he was so unwell; perhaps he'd been advised to lose some weight???

Went to the Globe to see A Midsummer Night's Dream last weekend - that's still extremely cheap for London theatre. You can stand for £5 and we paid twenty something for our seats. Good value IMHO compared to a West End musical.

Shelebrate away, Sally - you deserve it!

Had a technologically challenged weekend - bought new dvd recorder to finally transfer recordings of reporter son from Sky Box - took FOREVER to work out how to do it but I was the one who cracked the final problem - team work really though. We also bought a Blu-ray player because my Wimbly dvd arrived and I wasn't prepared to watch it in less than HD quality :shamed: (spoilt!) - another problem - they don't tell you on the box that you need a HDMI cable, so player = £63 and decent cable = another £43 :grrr: but all is now working and we've done all the transfers to dvd with the recorder. Then to top the lot I got myself a new phone today so am busy configuring all me apps ahead of the phone actually working as a phone tomorrow. Gone with Vodaphone because I was able to purchase a plug in signal booster so that finally I might be able to make and receive text messages/calls in the sticks. With retirement looming on Thursday it would be a bit pointless being at home paying for a phone that only worked when I go out somewhere! Fingers crossed.

It is very flat around most of the villages and am not likely to go long distance at my age, traffic much heavier than the last time I rode a bike!! Sorry Elizabeth..hope he will be OK. Came on to recount what happened in the early hours, then read your post. Husbands are a worry. I woke up at 4.25 as SG was having a seizure. This time I didn't ring for the paramedics as he's been taken to hospital each time and each time we go through exactly the same routine. He sleeps between tests and visits from nurses & doctor and I'm just sitting there absolutely light-headed with fatigue. We are usually there about 7 hours. So this morning I did what should be done, moved pillows, checked he was as normal as he could be and waited it out. I didn't manage to get him to bathroom before he wet himself as he usually does and it was a struggle getting him there eventually but I managed. Washed and changed him and put him to bed in guest room where I joined him after stripping bed etc. He woke up at 8.45 feeling normal and went for the papers. I slept until noon. He is absolutely fine now and has just gone for his usual afternoon nap. His last one was 9th December and before that there had been a gap of 18 months. Hope they are not becoming more frequent.

I bought a bicycle today! As I am now playing tennis twice a week I thought I would go a step further. It is very flat around most of the villages and am not likely to go long distance at my age, traffic much heavier than the last time I rode a bike!! It is called a Rayleigh Caprice and is a modern version of a granny bike with a basket on the front and a dial gear change on the handlebars. Smart!

Good for you, Pat!

Brother and sister-in-law paid a flying visit from Wiltshire today. Sis-in-law's father's anniversary and there was a special Mass. He was killed 70 yrs ago, shot down over Germany (he was in Bomber Command). My brother had phoned me last week telling me this and also informing me that the gifts on the list for sis-in-law's 70th birthday had all been bought. So that let me off the hook trying to find a docking station. It also meant that we could go out and buy anything and it would be handed over in time for her birthday on the 23rd. Such a relief and such a saving on postage.;) On September 5th son, d-i-l, SG and I are going for the weekend to celebrate both her 70th and bro's 70th in October. Going then as son and daughter-in-law leave for their year's trip early October. A party has been arranged but my sis-in-law doesn't know anything about the plans for the shared celebration. Today is our 51st wedding anniversary and I am sorry to say I completely forgot about it until my husband produced a card and flowers this morning. My excuse is that I was so busy running to hospital to visit him last week and having to do all my own housework and cooking that I had not time to think about anything else! He is very understanding and no harm done. Had my mother lived she would have been 100 today, my father's brother is 94 today and still lives on his own with no help from anyone - not sure if I will see 94.

Have been looking for a lost dog since Wednesday :crying: It's my friend's dog. The dog walker was walking her dogs with his in woods when they were attacked by an uncontrolled dog, which bit one of his dogs then went for Zanta, one of Jean's dogs. She ran off and we haven't seen her since. She may have been bitten and we have no idea how injured she is. We've been searching the woods but they are vast and it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. She's not the sort of dog that would run off so it seems very strange that there is no trace of her.

That's great, Linda - what's the story?

You lucky thing, Pat - a really good idea.

I'm in a flat panic - trying to cook new things not having left myself enough time. All in the oven now but there were a few expletives not deleted when I realised I'd put a new-fangled sponge topping in the oven without adding the eggs. I wouldn't mind but the eggs were in a bowl waiting for me to beat them and I thought the consistency of the mix seemed odd when I put it over the fruit. Anyway it was only 2 mins in the oven and Mr P scraped it all off and I added the eggs and it seems to look half decent. The proof of the pudding etc.

Today received a phone call from the wife of an author who has written a biog of The Beatles. He had been in touch a couple of years ago re my connection with them in their early years in Liverpool and has included a friend and me in the book. The launch party in Liverpool is on the 11th October and I have been invited. Was delighted to accept and she told me I would be receiving an invitation for me and a guest. I then checked the calendar and saw that on the 11th we are going to Bem Brazil in Manchester for a farewell dinner with Tim, Sarah and family, staying overnight and then going to Manchester Airport to see them off on their year long world trip. She tried to persuade me to go to the launch and then go to dinner. I had to explain to her that it was rather impossible to be in Liverpool and then get to Manchester for 7.30. She then said she was sure my son would understand if I missed the meal!! As if I would!! Still it would have been lovely to be there but family comes first.

When I was living in Suisse back in 1992-3, my husband (then fiancé) came over to visit me and we bought a train pass to go around Europe. He was an Indian citizen so had to apply for Visas to get into Suisse, Germany, Austria and Italy. What we hadn't realized was that to get from Austria to Germany we had to go via Czechoslovakia but he did not have a Visa for that country. The train stopped in Prague and the customs people dragged him up and were ready to throw him off the train and I had to bribe them with Swiss francs to let him stay. It was quite frightening the way they treated him tbh. Anyway, we got to where we needed to go thankfully but I did notice that Prague was exceptionally beautiful so you will have a great time but don't forget to take lots of photos.

Have fun in Prague Jane, hope it isn't too cold, mind you are used to the cold weather!!! I have just had a day and a half, 2 football matches and 2 swimming Galas and the youngest GD also fitted in 1/2 hr diving training. Just got back and started off at 9am. Both GDs very successful in all.

Sad to learn that our elderly next door neighbour is moving out into a residential home. She is 88 and has carers in several times a day so is moving to a home closer to her son.

We go round for tea every other weekend and take our dogs. She used to breed norfolk terriers and really misses them so when she learnt that we had 2 terriers, she asked us to bring them with us when we visit. We were just getting to know each other. She has lived in the village all her life and told us so much about it's history and all about the vicar and his wife who owned our house. We bought it after he died at the age of 94, but by all accounts his wife was quite the village matriarch in her day! We will really miss her. Just hope whoever buys the house is as friendly.

Awwww - how lovely of you to have visited her regularly. I'm sure she really appreciated it. Fingers crossed for your new neighbours - you're doubtless feeling a bit twitchty.

Our neighbour's new home is about an hour's drive away so definately doable and we have offered to take one of her friends who wouldn't drive that far. She is already finding out if the home will allow us to take the dogs to visit!! I'm sure she looks forward to seeing the dogs more than us

 I'm sure you'll be allowed to take them - hubby's aunt is in a home and they have a dog that lives there!

Sad today - my boss in my very first job after leaving college has died over the weekend. He was a lovely man - Professor Charles McKean - architectural historian and history professor at Dundee University latterly - I worked with him in Edinburgh and he gave me such a lot of opportunities to move up in the organisation. He used to scare the living daylights out of me at times, but he had a wicked sense of humour and was just such a nice man. He was only 67 - far too young to be gone. My thoughts are with his wife and sons.

67 is so young in this day and age  Having said that my patients seem to be getting younger and younger ...... or maybe I'm just getting older ;)

Thanks Hawk - just read the one from the Herald which was written by Neil Baxter who was my immediate boss when I worked at RIAS. It's very well written indeed and paints a very accurate picture of the man.

It's here (http://www.heraldscotland.com/comment/obituaries/charles-mckean.22301192)if anyone else is interested!

Younger son is has been covering all the party political conferences for ITV Border, Tyne Tees and Calendar - saw him interview David Cameron yesterday and Ed Miliband last week. He interviewed Nick Clegg while we were on hols.

Can't believe our nomad exeistence is almost at an end! :big grin:

Just returned from a 4 day tour to Paris with 300 Rock Choir members from Hertford, Watford & St Albans. We sang on the outbound ferry, the castle stage at EuroDisney, on a boat on the Seine and in the gardens at the side of Notre Dame cathedral. You'd think the EuroDisney concert would be the highlight but no, singing by Notre Dame was an incredible emotional experience. Both singers and audience left with tears streaming down their faces after we sang 'Something inside so strong' which has become a bit of a Rock Choir signature song. Lots of hugs between total strangers who didn't speak the same language but who appreciated us coming and entertaining them at a time of great stress in their country. A truly wonderful memory that I will always treasure. :grouphug:
