Just returned from a 4 day tour to Paris with 300 Rock Choir members from Hertford, Watford & St Albans. We sang on the outbound ferry, the castle stage at EuroDisney, on a boat on the Seine and in the gardens at the side of Notre Dame cathedral. You'd think the EuroDisney concert would be the highlight but no, singing by Notre Dame was an incredible emotional experience. Both singers and audience left with tears streaming down their faces after we sang 'Something inside so strong' which has become a bit of a Rock Choir signature song. Lots of hugs between total strangers who didn't speak the same language but who appreciated us coming and entertaining them at a time of great stress in their country. A truly wonderful memory that I will always treasure. :grouphug: :clap:Did you take part in the Abbey Road recordings in 2014?

Yes, I was at Abbey Road - another fun day. Have had so many great experiences with Rock Choir - sung on the pitch at Wembley for a Saracens rugby match, at the O2 with thousands of Rockies, in Birmingham with about 10,000 Rockies for our 10 year anniversary plus many smaller local concerts and fundraising events.

Do you have connections with Rock Choir, Hawkeye?

If anyone on here enjoys singing, I can recommend this choir. No auditions, no need to read music, no pressure to perform, just good fun. There are choirs all over the UK and over 17,000 members.

I have a different leader, Abigail Harris, equally talented, as all RC leaders seem to be. Jenny sounds great.

It seems that we have a pod of orcas circling the island at the moment killing our seals. I was talking to the coastguard yesterday and he said that he thought we had lost as many as 100 in the past few weeks. We have certainly had a few headless bodies washed up on our beach in the last week or two - not great in the middle of the tourist season. Nature is nature, I suppose, but it's sad when this seems to be pretty mindless killing.

I appreciate that, J, but they seem to be killing indiscriminately - far more than they can eat - and just leaving the carcasses. We have had another headless one washed up on our beach today. Maybe that's just the nature of the beast. It's a full time job keeping the dogs away from them though.

It's like foxes with lambs at lambing time. I hate them with a vengeance but if they take the whole lamb to feed a nest of cubs I can understand that it's nature. Every so often, though, you get one that will kill 3 or 4 in a night and just leave them lying in the field - that really gets to me.

Me too! Love Italy. Daughter used to live in Roma...I loved every moment I spent there with her.. She was there during the last quake, I think about 9 years ago, and although in Roma and quite far from the epicentre, they still had to evacuate their building as everything shook quite violently. Sad for Amatrice and surrounding villages.

The day was lovely and sunny, so seeing Centre Court was brilliant, never seen it before apart from on TV (another thing on my tick list, to go there to see a match being played, preferably Andy playing). Court no. 19 has been removed to make a wide walkway for spectators, lots of work being done on No.1 court for the new roof which is going to be ready in 2019. I'll never forget how excited I was when the ticket woman said she had two in the second row. All the way down to my seat I couldn't believe it. It was fantastic. I posted a picture on Facebook that my friend took, one of my other friends text me to say how much she lived my completely happy "second row on centre" face. So I guess the happiness was caught on film :) or phone I should say lol

I have had 3 of those on a motorway - many years ago though. The scariest was the first one going fast in the fast lane of the motorway with load of lorries in the inside lanes and all I could do was control how quickly the car veered left having to push in between the lorries.

It was the first one that was really scary. The others were in a different car (with me driving in one of them) and the steering was much better. However with the last one resulted in 2 big holes in the tyre so was lucky the car steered OK.

Life on a Hebridean island makes me smile sometimes. Yesterday my son dropped in to see me. 'Have you, by any chance, ordered a case of wine?' says he. 'Well yes,' says I, 'they had a special offer on. How did you know?' Seemingly he had been doing his shopping in the village. When he got in his car to go home the light came on to alert him to the fact that a door was open. He knows he has a faulty boot catch, so got out to close the boot and, in so doing, found that someone had deposited a box of wine in his boot. Did he have a mystery benefactor? Unfortunately, not so - the delivery man had spotted my son's car in the village - couldn't be bothered to drive the three miles to our house to deliver my wine, so had dumped it in my son's boot! Would that happen on the mainland? Probably not. It did make me smile.

Touts make me not just sad but angry! I don't mean those guys who buy a few extra tickets and the stand outside a venue to sell them, I mean the people sat in rooms with a bunch of desktops and monitors and special software. But up tickets through several emails on several cards. Then immediately put them on reselling sits for insane prices. Often I manage to avoid them with pre sales for tennis and gigs, however when I looke do to joining the presale for Greenday it seemed you had to join an American fan club and then pay an amount in dollars and get access to American presales. So this morning I sat in front of my iPad desktop and phone. At 9 am the tickets went on sale, also at 9am the tickets for Manchester sold out. By 9.02 every venue that I had tried was sold out. Were the tickets snapped up by excited fans like myself? No they are all on the reselling site now! Surely there is more sites could do. And this business of having the in not a robot doesn't help, it slows me down whilst I imagine the touts have software than can do it which is why it doesn't stop them, and it probably takes them less time. Sorry that was a rant!

Her mum is a classically trained ballet dancer, not dancing now, so it was inevitable that she would go to ballet lessons. She went once, enjoyed it, bought the gear then refused to go again. I am, therefore, not holding my breath but would just be very pleased if she enjoys playing and finds a hobby to last a lifetime. If, however, she could make enough to keep me in my old age, that would be something else! Have fun Erin x

I am so unbelievably fortunate to live in such a wonderful part of the world - we are only 90 minutes drive from the Cairngorms, 45 minutes from the Moray Firth and all the beautiful fishing villages and a similar distance to Aberdeen - we have the best of all worlds - and some folk think I live in the back of beyond :rolling: .... I'll take it, it's pretty much perfect - well until I come home to a muddy puddle on the farm that is

To say I'm jealous is an understatement, I love walking in Scotland in general but the Cairngorms is our favourite place. Any season. We usually stay in Newtonmore though we've camped and stayed in the bothy up by the Devils point too. We were hoping to get back up the Lairig ghru this September but with Davis and the Kev Ds birthday it will be a struggle to fit it in :( we are about 90 mins/2 hours from snowdonia so it's not too bad.

I'm not up to the Lairig Ghru .... ever  Hubby walked it year's ago but after major knee issues last year being back walking is fab! We're planning on tackling the Speyside Way - it'll probably take quite a while in instalments unless we can find someone to help with pickup/drop off!

Blimey sorry to hear about your knee issues. Glad you are on the road to recovery and starting to get out walking again. The speyside way will be fantastic. We also like the walk up to lochan uaine from the visitors centre in Glenmore. It's a far shorter walk and the loch is pretty special. We've been to lochan Eilein a few times but it always seems to be really busy, so started looking for a bit more isolation. It's beautiful, but I love to take photos and I prefer my photos without people lol.

We've done the loch nan eilan walk as well might try the uaine one next time we're up there. We camped at Glenmore a few years ago (not sure I'm up to camping any more!) - we love it up there - and for that to be our first visit this year is just ridiculous when we're so close!!! We'll probably make it back before the end of the year though - hopefully anyway .... hubby likes photos too ... I took a few on my phone, including a funny one of him with a duck that came right up to a few feet from him at the water's edge!

i went to the Cairngorms for the first time in 2008 we loved it so much we never went back to glencoe or Loch Ness or the falls. There is so much to see. It a lot more isolated by the braemar side and there is a nice walk (and a fairly easy one), towards the linn of Dee that side. I am hoping to fit in a walk and camp in early October before the weather changes. But o guess we'll see.

@ jagmad - thought provoking. Have passed it onto teachers of my acquaintance. Agree with many of the points, but not sure what we could put in its place, what works for some children won't work for others. I do think the education system is failing many youngsters.

I asked the youngster I taught this year, why the way I taught her worked for her given, had the lessons been assessed by Ofsted I would have been crucified? It was mainly repeatedly going through the stuff on the syllabus and explaining it, trying to relate it to real world application of the ideas, and giving her a frame to hang the ideas on. Personally I think it worked because on a 1:1 basis I could spot instantly the moment I had lost her. We also had several sessions when I told her at the start I wasn't expecting her to understand it all at the end of the session - I just had to put the first coat of "paint" on.

Going at the pace of the individual student is not viable with a class of 30, when all of them proceed at a different speed, and the speed of progression is different for different subjects.

The video raises a lot of questions, but fewer answers.

Such an interesting and thought-provoking video. Have shared it on Facebook. There was a lot of sense spoken but sadly, can't see a solution forthcoming in the near future. I blame politicians who have never been in a classroom as he does but the greatest crime, in my opinion, was the National Curriculum instigated by government. In my subject English it immediately took us away from a wide and varied syllabus to a narrow, test oriented way of teaching which made me despair. It also put more emphasis on the academic subjects to the detriment of the art and craft subjects. They were still taught and taught very well but did not have the weight of say the sciences or the new subject IT. Every subject taught in schools was and is important as young people have different skills and abilities and it is up to teachers, parents and society to recognise this. One can still hear jocular remarks from comedians and others in the media saying they weren't good at this or that, that they haven't read such a book.......they did woodwork! :facepalm:What is needed is well-educated teachers inspiring young people to be the best they can be. That was what drove me as a teacher and I think I was successful. Until governments stop interfering with education, until teachers are regarded as important, until parents help and encourage their offspring to be the best at what they're good at the future doesn't look very rosy in the state sector. I could go on but I will stop as I would probably get on your nerves, if I haven't already.

Aye, there's the rub! Sadly, I don't think governments will ever stop interfering with education - it will always be a political football and the nation's children suffer as a result.

When I taught in a comprehensive in the early 80s, they had a garage where it was possible to do car mechanics. Often it was the boys who chose this and often, the less academic of them. However one of my very bright students, a girl, chose to do the subject, wanting eventually to study engineering at university. IMHO there's far too much emphasis on the academic subjects these days - the most vital of which ARE counting and reading - but for the rest, to devalue practical subjects is a disgrace, leaving non academic children feeling inferior, undervalued and uncatered for. No wonder we have problems with a disaffected group of youngsters. And what do we lack in society today? Plumbers and electricians who can charge an arm and a leg (but who also have to pay an arm and a leg to be trained) for their work. Where are the practical subjects in school? Where are the apprenticeships? The latter have come back into fashion but I fear in numbers that are way too small to cater for all who need them.

Alis

It's not just the less academic pupils who benefit from a broad and varied curriculum though. I remember well one of the brightest pupils I have taught. Her parents and older brothers were all medics and inevitably she was expected to follow in their footsteps. However, through her exposure to drama at school, she became very interested in the mechanics of theatre and stage management. She assisted with all the school productions and, much to her parents' chagrin, went off to study Theatre at university. She is now Stage Manager at a very famous theatre in London and absolutely loves her job. What a disservice we would have done that girl if we had not exposed her to drama at school.

goldfish
09-11-2016, 17:52
One of my hobby horses, pabbers. So often children aren't bad at maths and reading - they just need to see the relevance and that is what these practical subjects teaches them too. I'm not so sure it is possible today but in my schooldays, you could probably get practical experience in these skills at weekends if you had been taught a few basics at school.

It's already being done (much better) in Finland as pointed out in the video.
I know as we visited there on our trip to see the northern lights.

When something is on a downward spirral it's hard to stop it.

Finlands education system is on an upward spiral, and has been for some years.
I believe our problem is that if something isn't working properly we chuck it out
and put something new in it's place. Hoping a new broom will sweep clean, but
nobody bothers to check if it even has any bristles and if it has how well are they
attached.
Perhaps it's time to think more like Trig in Only fools and horses?
He'd had his broom all his working life never let him down cos he looked after it!!!!
As my late mother used to say "Many a true word , spoken in jest."
Or as my late father wrote "Is there anyone more serious than comiediens?"

We had a wonderful evening, thanks Claire. Wouldn't miss it! We go every year...our special Christmas treat! As soon as the date is announced in Jan/Feb for that year's concert, we are off to the box office to sort out our tickets!
Glad you are well recovered. Well done!

Thanks Pat :) and glad you had a good time. Our next door neighbours go every year too! Maybe I should price tickets for next year........

Glad you are cleared to get back to work. Hope it all goes well. Enjoy your last few weeks of freedom:-)

Thanks Teresa :) yes I'm getting a bit rushed now trying to fit all my plans in! I feel ready but a bit worried about how my head will cope with the noise sometimes but will have to prepare for a DC tie somehow!

My daughter and son-in-law arrive home tomorrow for Christmas which is lovely and BB gets home on Friday :) it's making it feel a lot like Christmas!

You'll be able to meet up with Roast Lamb as she is not far from Toronto (I can't remember if you met her when she came over in 2009). Are you going to Ottawa for DC?

Just managed to set my hair alight whilst lighting a gas fire. Not a good way to start the new year - there must be easier ways of re-styling your hair! So lucky that I only lost my fringe though - husband and daughter are traumatised!

Well, the gas didn't ignite initially so I went back to see what had gone wrong and whoosh!! I hear fringes are very 2016 anyway!;)

Gosh Alis, how scary. That's making me doubly wary as I wheedle my gas boiler into action to at least get it to heat the water. It has been playing up since last week and with hols going on it isn't getting looked at until tomorrow. Hopefully just one more day of the layered look and huddling in front of the fire.

My gran had a similar experience years ago trying to light the gas oven. Singed her eyebrows a treat and the front of her hair!

I was just about to post the same although my gran did it more than once  she had no fear! She also kept an empty bottle beside her bed to hit burglars!

What's made me happy? Hmmm....
Going on a cruise for Christmas and new year with my wonderful other half.
Southampton-Spain-Morocco-Lanzarote-Grand Canaria-Tenerife-La Palma-Madeira)
The highlight being the worlds best fireworks display in Madeira Port New years eve.

What's made me sad?
Getting back today.
Although we did miss the grand kids / family.

What's going to make me happy?
The belated Christmas dinner on Saturday with them all coming to celebrate Christmas, new year
and two of the grand kids birthdays.

What's going to make me sad (sort of)?
Preparing and cooking it. Probably! as there's going to be 12 of us at least.

So a belated merry Xmas and happy new year to you all from Lynne and I.
:santa dance::merry christmas::snowman::happy new year::peekaboo:

Ps. Or to put it another way how to celebrate Sir Andy Murray being World No.1

We - the dogs and I - came across the body of a newborn kid on our walk this morning. It looked as though it had been picked up and dropped by a bird of prey. Such a shame - poor wee thing. It got me thinking though, are feral goats the only species that give birth to their young in the middle of the winter? Why would nature do that?

Sheep do .... my neighbours start lambing at Christmas .... don't bears give birth when they're holed up for the winter as well?

Some breeds lamb in the autumn .... ours don't come till spring and that's plenty soon enough I can tell you .... especially as my lovely daughter is not going to be around to help at the start .... and I have 2 weeks holidays then as school's out, and I don't want to help .... I hate sheep!!! They're SO annoying!

I went to Dublin last week to meet up with one of my former students, from when I did VSO in Uganda. The last time I travelled to Dublin overnight kipping on ferries was when I went to Dublin with fellow University students. Time has not improved the experience...!!! It was only when meeting him again I realised just how much my work there had changed the lives of a lot of people. He took the skills I gave him and has put them to good use. Sort of stone in a pond-ripple effect. Given VSO made a major contribution to my ill health, it's good to know it was worth it.

I have set up a Gofundme page to try and raise enough money for a new laptop for him. I won't put a link on here because a) it's nothing to do with tennis and b) the mods might eat me. However if anyone fancies donating a fiver to a good cause please pm me for a link:-)

My 3 year old granddaughter should have been having a birthday pool party yesterday. Instead she spent the day being violently sick. One lovely birthday cake made by my son (with help from Fentiger) having to be eaten by grandparents ..... 1232

My niece has travelled down from Liverpool to rugby today to compete in a national kickboxing tournament. She's been in big competitions for badminton but this is her first major competition for kickboxing. I told her yesterday to enjoy it whatever the result but she just laughed! I wish her lots of luck! I'm expecting updates from her mum throughout the day! Her coach is a former champion and he thinks she will be great! Go Becky :)
