Well done Lizzim!
Very excited as son got his investigative report on continuing healthcare onto the ITV national news at lunchtime. Someone else may do the voice over bit this evening but it's likely to be on again. The web item is here:
http://www.itv.com/news/2012-03-23/itv-news-report-finds-nhs-funding-dependent-on-postcode-not-need/
Well done to Paul, Pat! Interesting report - but what always amazes me in these things is that if people are having to pay themselves, where are they getting the money from? How on earth can that lady afford £1,100 per week for care? And if she couldn't afford it, what would happen?
Well done to Lizzim and Pat's son :)

Don't get me started!!! This is the work that I do for free with the Cardiff Law School students and the solicitor who featured in the item supervises us.
congratulations LIZZIM

Well at least here I wouldn't have been quite as puzzled :)
I'm feeling sad because my Dad passed away on Wednesday morning. He was 88 though, so he had had a good innings.

I have spent the last few weeks cleaning the house from head to toe and getting rid of a lot of visible clutter, ready to put the house on the market. The estate agents came this evening and taken all the photos etc and should be ready for sale very shortly. Now I have some work to do in the garden to get rid of some clutter there. Then start looking for a little bungalow somewhere in the Shire counties. About to go through one of the worst periods that you can have in life. Don't know whether I am happy or sad!!!
Oh that's tough Pat - is always hard moving house....hope you find something nice to move to :)
Well done Rozzie!
Pat, I admire your energy - that's what I need to do, sort out my house and garden so that I can put it up for sale. Hope everything goes smoothly for you.
hfwardhouse
02-04-2012, 20:49
Oh Pat - hope it all goes smoothly and you get something you like.
My Mum's considering selling and moving away from Arbroath - she's been in her house since 1964 - I'm still in shock at the prospect of the family home not being there any more - Mr HFW is seriously upset that he won't get any more holidays by the seaside ....!!! Mum turns 80 in June and her mobility isn't what it was - she needs to downsize and have everything on the ground floor .... and she doesn't feel that she wants to be in Arbroath where she could see what new folks do to "her" house! Sensible really - and her plan of moving nearer my brother is a good one too cos she has a brother not too far away and it would make it easier for us to visit cos we can stay at my brother's.
Oh yes ... And it would appear I have a journalism job as an IT writer, part time and will get some work experience at the sports agency at journo school in the mean time.spotted this thaught it might be of interest to you http://enquirewithin.wordpress.com/2012/04/02/new-journalists-are-we-screwed/
spotted this thaught it might be of interest to you http://enquirewithin.wordpress.com/2012/04/02/new-journalists-are-we-screwed/
Thanks so much for that J - I am going to send this round our bunch of journo trainees as we are all in employment and slogging away part time on our diplomas.
It's interesting when you read the guy/girl's credentials.
On my interview and workshop day, there was a guy who had just finished a degree in Journalism who (much like the writer) assumed that JUST the degree would get the role. You then have to do a National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) to get taken on for PRINT mainly but there are also broadcasting and video journalism modules so I can assume it works for that side of the industry too.
What they miss in their piece is that it doesn't end there - you then have to get a National Certificate of Excellence (NCE) also run by the same body!
At the risk of sounding harsh - I have little sympathy for the writer. I graduated in a last recession and applied for literally hundreds of jobs, indeed working in a bar until I landed a job with IBM.
And now some 20 years later, I am finally drifting into the job I want to do.. After a lot of heartache, bullying, soul searching, and above all HARD GRAFT.
I am taking more than a 50% pay CUT to get my start in journalism - and it's still not what I really WANT to do in terms of being a tennis journo. But it's a foot in the door that gives me the chance to try.
And that's what I'm going to do. Keep plugging away and if I am GOOD enough to be a sport journalist - then I firmly believe I will be. But in the mean time I am always ALWAYS going to be thankful if I have money coming in and I am able to work in some capacity for a living.
When anyone on our group has landed a job, everyone is so encouraging ... Maybe because we all have something else to fall back on if it doesn't work? I don't know.
Well done Roz.
Aw Pat it must indeed be bringing you mixed feelings to move house - leaving your memories behind but with the prospect of a new life ahead and nearer your children too.

Had a lovely day down at Newquay, booked the granchildren in for the tennis roadshow. They had a great time and felt their tennis had improved with the coaching and I managed to have a chat with Judy, who recognised me from DC. Wished her luck with the Fed cup matches coming up.

Pat - glad you had a great day with the grandchildren and met Judy.
Hope everything goes well with your move Pat. Our house went back on the market about a month ago after the disastrous time we had last year with it all falling through. Things are slow but you just have to wait for the right person .....
FINALLLLLLY got the last month's rent from the idiot/evil managing agents. They are so bad, my tenants wrote me a letter BEGGING me to get shot of them, and the property manager is the RUDEST little twerp I have ever encountered.
They work for me, for crying out loud - yet I have had to wait half a month for MY money.
I fully expect I will lose the £200 reserve if it takes 2 weeks to chase for the rent.
And yet they still seem to think that I might one day come back?!
Once I get my last money, I am sorely tempted to write head office a letter telling them exactly what I think of their (lack of) service!#
In happier news - I got tix in the LTA ballot for Court 1, 2nd Monday!

Well DONE mate!
I'd sent the guy I'm going to be working for 4 outlines of articles I wanted to do, and the style I wanted to do them in, because let's face it, my area of IT is as dry as toast.
I hadn't heard back until today as we are having a planning meeting... and... HE LOVES the ideas!
He didn't think them too whimsical, or that they would be trivialising the subject matter.
And he's looking longer term that my 3-month trial as well.
Good news for the exam-chicks all round, I'd say!

Just heard back from one of my job applications - they loved my CV (well, according to the agent, at least, and they always lay it on a bit thick, but hey...) and they want me to come in for an interview next week!

Yep, on the whole I think I'd prefer to come across as confident rather than creepy
yeah - I think it's something I haven't yet mastered [/swooshes cloak and chortles MWAH HA HARRRRRRRRR!]
Bad news today - apparently my electric gates are possessed!!! Or maybe just the motor is gone, but the lovely gate guys were also giving me lots of advice on the business setting up malarky I am having to do.
Good news... only 9 more days left before I start as a paid writer.
Thanks to everyone who left kind messages - I think maybe a cheeky drink or two when next we are reunited at some tennis match, or other!
Great news Fiona! Good luck!
So ... Tomorrow I am representing Tennis Panorama News at ... The AELTC Wimbledon Spring Press Conference! One of the writers I follow on twitter DMed me and asked if I was interested! I have to dash between Earls Court and Wimbledon a couple of times during the day as I am mooching around a trade show for my new job tomorrow and Wednesday.
Omg just 4 days and I am shot of the worst working decision I ever made in my life!!!

Happy that my little 5 year old daughter is ok, following a nasty fall on Sunday evening which resulted in her having surgery to repair a deep cut to her eye yesterday morning! I am very relieved and thankful that there is no damage to her actual eye but she will have a scar just above her eyelid. The general anaesthetic has taken its toll though and she's slept for over 13 hours solid. A quiet day for us both today I think.
Do feel for you GL. Glad your little one is OK and her eye isn't damaged. These accidents can happen so quickly. Hope she makes a full recovery soon and you get over the trauma too. :flowers:

Talking of which - mock paper in timed conditions at home today, revision for my sports reporting mock tomorrow... I have to get back to the guy in charge of thetennisspace.com now that I have had a run through in terms of content management in Wordpress, AND... It's cold and damp here - had a crazy busy few days of work and I'm just starting to surface so I'm putting the heating on, snuggling with a book and TV and probably going to open a bottle of wine very soon after the sun is over the yardarm!

I know the feeling Jane! Dave is away at the moment, and I've got my parents coming on Wednesday - just staying overnight on their way elsewhere, but I still have to tidy the house same as I would if they were here for a week!
Today (so far!) I've mowed the front lawn, tidied the front room, half-tidied the dining room, cleaned the kitchen and washed out the fridge! That last one was semi accidental - I was looking through it for anything getting out of date, and found a manky bottle of very old salad dressing, on it's side, right at the back and leaking! So I ended up taking all the shelves out and cleaning the whole thing! :grrr:
Tomorrow it will be tidying spare room aka junk room, hoovering and dusting, then Tuesday will be bathrooms and food shopping....

At least you have the time to do that Fiona - I'm working all day Tuesday and Wednesday - tomorrow is a school holiday so won't get much done as we're hoping to go out for the day - Thursday am in and out and that doesn't leave a lot of time to make the house look respectable
Of course, if I wasn't such a bad housewife, I'd make it a priority but I don't ;)

Everyone's been very busy. Me too!!! Panicking, trying to get everything ready for a yard sale. We have to sell nearly everything as moving into the motorhome. :help: Very hard getting rid of things we have had for a lifetime. Not sure it will ever get finished!!!! Had a nice surprise Friday night at midnight though when youngest son surprised us by coming home on leave on the way to his ship in Panama. :yahoo:So we have 18 days with him, yay.:excited:
What a great surprise - hope you have a lovely time with him!
Its lovely to have nice surprises Genbrit. :) But moving into a motorhome - that sounds interesting.:)

How lovely Genbrit - enjoy your time with your son :)
As for the motorhome, I'm intrigued! Are you going to stay in one place or travel around?
Just back from dropping Jennifer and her mum off at the train station. We had an interesting weekend of local sightseeing - have now been to Stonehenge for the first time :) (Have only lived nearby for 31 years!)
Isn't that just the way! Not to visit sites that are on your doorstep. How was she?
Genbrit - looking forward to hearing more of your motorhome adventure!
She's not too bad :) We also went to Salisbury Cathedral and the Roman Baths...all things we wouldn't have gone to on our own :)

 It's a bit like me not seeing Niagara Falls even though I live 10 minutes away. I went to Stonehenge during my Wimbly trip in '09. We stayed in Salisbury. It was the semi-final day between Roddick and Andy and I remember walking around Stonehenge worried about the match that I was missing and hoping Andy'd win. Got to the hotel as they were in the last set. Walked round downtown Salisbury and Cathedral that night in a sad daze.

We did Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral a few years ago when we were camping in the area - loved it! Been to the Roman Baths years ago - interesting - Bath's a lovely place! So's Salisbury!
Know the feeling though - been to Elgin today and did a Treasure Trail (treasuretrails.co.uk) and have seen bits of Elgin we've not seen before - it was great!
Tempted to say 'did you see the marbles' :rolling: I saw the Elgin marbles at the British museum years ago - I didn't know that there was a place called Elgin! though of course all Lords' names are after places so I should have realised :shamed:

I think it is a sore point that the Elgin marbles aren't in Elgin ;)
The Greeks have been campaigning to have them back for years. Did we ever agree to send them back? I can't remember.
Loved Bath & Salisbury when we went there. Drove past Stonehenge but I think they were closed at the time. We live 10 minutes from the Las Vegas strip but still haven't been to all the casinos, can't keep up with the openings etc.
We do plan on traveling in the motorhome, it will be our home and we have already bought a new couch and mattress for it as the ones it came with were very uncomfortable. have put ornaments in and pics on the wall and our 42" tv in. it has an electric fireplace and washer/dryer!!!! It will depend on gas (petrol) prices how quickly we go from place to place. We have our house up for sale and have an offer but it is less than we owe on it so the bank has to agree to the loss. Hubbie is taking early retirement in August and I will probably retire in December or next June, just depends. then we will travel and keep where the weather is nice. north in Summer and South in Winter. We have a bucket list of things to do and see but will probably stop and workcamp if we need money at any time. Campgrounds over here hire you to maintain them and take the fees and you get to stay for free. Or you can give lighthouse tours and camp for free. Disney takes on workers sometimes also. There are lots of different things to do. Will do a blog when we get on the road and give you all the link so you can follow along if you want to. I told hubbie last night though that we have to make sure we don't kill ourselves clearing out the house before we go as we are both exhausted.

Yes on the ticket it says latest admission to the event is 18.15 but I have a feeling I saw somewhere that you can go in from about 1pm - you could try Cardiff Council website as I think they are organising it. Emeli Sande is the headliner for the concert with You Me at Six - never heard of either!! The torch arrives at Coopers field as it's last port of call in Cardiff but I haven't yet checked at what time. Sorry - not much help!!!

Was thrilled today. I tweeted ITV complimenting them on their coverage of Roland Garros and I was notified later that they'd "favourited" my tweet :shamed:
Only thing is you can't seem to see third party tweets on their twitter page - only their own tweets. So I can see what I said in my twitter pages but no one else will know they've been complimented which seems a shame as it might encourage more to express their pleasure and thus make ITV think about obtaining the rights to other slams like OZ and US - I guess the Beeb has Wimbly all stitched up.

Younger son made it onto the 10pm ITV news last night reporting on the Nalby incident - he knows nothing about sport :laugh:I'd have loved to have seen him...did you tell anyone?
No I didn't - I only just found out in time myself as he texted us.......we don't normally watch ITV news :shamed: He reports fairly often at lunch time and tea time.

You can see him here - it's just a tiny clip and I got a sound echo on it:

My lovely daughter was in the winning team for her school in the inter school tennis competition - for the second year in a row!!!! Her school only entered last year for the first time ... methinks the other schools will be wondering about not inviting them next year!

Erm .... well the only offer was made last week (same last year) when they asked for kids to try out for the team ... they needed 3 boys and 3 girls for boys and girls dubs and mixed dubs ..... no practice or anything ... only 3 girls went forward - 2 could play, 1 was pretty hopeless. Thankfully, the competition is won on the number of games won by the school in all the matches rather than on matches won .... although by the sounds of things, Huntly won most of their matches too!
Sadly, they don't do tennis as part of their PE schedule .... at least I don't think they do - she's never mentioned it anyway!

Awesome Esther, well done!
It is with indescribable relief I can announce that I passed both News Reporting and Sports Journalism.
These exams were in the same week (stressful) and are so subjective, there is little you can revise for - you either write the stories with the right amount of content, accurately with no issues, or you don't and you fail.
What makes it all the more annoying is that local papers write in totally the opposite way to how the NCTJ teach you, yet they train you to work on print titles (i.e. locals/nationals).
I might have some uber exciting Wimbledon news but waiting for it all to be confirmed.
That leaves:
Court Reporting Exam
3 more attempts at shorthand
2 x features who quite frankly refuse to write themselves (very annoying)
Portfolio to be handed in on 14th July - thankfully full of local placement material already.
Oh yeah and wait - don't I get paid already to write? Why yes, yes I do!
