Hello Lindsay, lovely to see you!
:D
Look forward to some poems - how about one that tells a tale of wandering Murray members?
It has been a sad week for quite a few - my uncle died on Tuesday - we have the funeral on Monday - so sad that his son didn't make it home from America in time
Hugs to GL, SG and Vixs xx
Sorry about your uncle, Jane http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt78/SooperpiePhotos/hug.gif
Sorry to hear of people's bereavements. Hope you will be given the strength you need to get through the sad times.
Sorry about your uncle Jane (((())))
Sorry to hear such sad news GL, SG, and hfw. Thinking of you all.
 So sorry to hear about everyone's bereavements.
GL: your Gran died on your daughter's b-day? Awful when that happens. Tomorrow (27th August) is my eldest daughter's 12th b-day (and my brother's too) but sadly it marks the 4th anniversary of my niece's death. So, as you say, bittersweet indeed.
Sorry to hear about you uncle, Jane! ((hugs))

Happy birthday Jan!
Thanks for your kind thoughts everyone.
Happy Birthday Jan and also to RoastLamb's daughter! Bittersweet day for you RL.x
Jane, I'm sorry about your Uncle. It certainly has been a tough week for some of us. My Nan's funeral is this coming Friday, very proud of my 12 &13 yr old daughter & son who both said they wanted to come firstly to say goodbye to their Great Gran & secondly to hold my hand. I was touched. Despite the sadness last Wednesday, my little 5 yr old girl enjoyed her birthday, we waited till Thursday to explain. She had a wonderful party today with her friends.
So sorry to hear about the berievments! :(
Thanks Jane. Really sorry to read your sad news. Sending sympathy to you and all the family.
Happy that son and daughter-in-law, whose wedding anniversary it is today, are on the road to Scotland for their holiday in the Hebrides. First stop Perth, then ferry from Skye to Harris. Great to get regular updates with pic on fb.
Happy that son and daughter-in-law have arrived safely on the Isle of Harris where they are happily settled in their bell tent in a stunning camp site. They arrived this afternoon and one of their pics showed chickens wandering into their tent.
So much sadness for so many! Maureen, Fiona, Jane and Golden Lady, I am so sorry for your losses.
I may come to London in January :D

So much sadness for so many! Maureen, Fiona, Jane and Golden Lady, I am so sorry for your losses.
Thanks Linda. Funeral was yesterday. It was a lovely Mass followed by cremation. As the crematorium is close to where we live we did not travel back to parish club next to church for refreshments. Instead we went with some friends for lunch and had a lovely afternoon talking over old times.
Thanks everyone - funeral was on Monday and was really lovely service - nice to catch up with cousins and family although having seen them all at our annual family gathering the week before we didn't have quite so much to catch up with!
Hugs to everyone xx
Good to hear that all went ok SG and Jane.
My Nan's funeral was on Friday and although it was a very sad occasion, it was wonderful to meet up with family members I hadn't seen for years. One cousin who I was very close to as a girl and teenager, I hadn't seen for 20 years and we hadn't expected her to come. I cannot tell you what it meant to me to see her standing outside the church waiting before the funeral. I am now in contact with her again and my Nan would have been so glad. It was a very emotional day.
Hugs GL! That's the amazing thing about funerals (and weddings too); you meet up with people you knew as kids and lost touch with.
Thanks RL.
I've had a lovely weekend. My son came to visit, and we spent yesterday at the Duxford Air Show.
Good to hear that all went ok SG and Jane.

Aahh, hugs GL.Obviously it was sad saying goodbye to your Nan but so glad for you that you met up with family you hadn't seen for years, especially your cousin. I always think that when you say goodbye to an older person, although the service and burial/cremation are emotional and sad afterwards the mood changes. You greet old friends and relatives you haven't seen for a while. You tell stories about the departed loved one and, generally start to feel much better. Hope you are feeling better.
Thanks for your lovely post supergran. Everything you said was so true, even though it was sad, we did have a few smiles later on when we all remembered my Nan (and some of her finer moments).
Well, not counting tennis had a lovely weekend. On Saturday went to a School reunion - Class of 86 and had a really nice time meeting student and learning about how well they are doing, looking at pics of their children and generally having a good laugh. Yesterday met up with five ex pupils who were in my very first class with whom I have always kept in touch. One of them lives in Spain and was unable to be at my party last year. So when he told me he was coming over for a long weekend I organised a get-together. Luckily one who lives in Holland was over visiting her family so the famous five were together again. They are all 51 now but if you'd have seen us sitting around that large table in the pub you'd have sworn we were all much younger people as we couldn't stop laughing at tales from long ago. We were quite hysterical at times. Lovely to see them all again.
So sad for the families and friends of the miners lost in the pit accident in Wales. I had thought that the days of mining tragedies in this country were gone forever but, sadly, I was wrong. It does put minor niggles we may have into perspective.
Yes very true Alis, my thoughts & prayers go out to those families.
So very sad. So sorry for their families. Mining is still a very dangerous occupation.
Had a real low on Friday when the contract Project Manager escalated me to the account manager and my manager for having a dentist's appointment planned and asking if I could shift a half hour meeting by a day. Totally unreasonable rant from her after she takes time for herself.
Made me realise that I want out of this industry and at the very least want to work for myself and do contracts.
Then I submitted my first piece to the sports desk linked to the journalism school thinking they would review it and tell me what I need to think about as a proper sports journo (as opposed to my self indulgent ramblings as a blogger).
To my utter surprise is got published!!!

Wow that's fab Sally!! I@m happy because I did pilates this morning without too many after effects so far (apart from using a lot of elbow grease to polish my halo!) and still can't believe we're actually here in the Mansion. My excitement in following Andy has been revitalised + the win in Bangkok. What more could a person want? :cheer:

I apologise in advance if I go off into a rant here - I'm furious :grrr:
On one of the routes I go for a walk most days, there is a road bridge over a small river, and the footpath by the river goes under that bridge, where for years the walls were grey and dismal and covered in graffiti.
Only about 3-4 weeks ago, a local community/conservation society started whitewashing the wall - I walked past once while they were doing it and passed the time of day. A few days later when I walked past, they had gone further, and there was a black line drawing on the wall - a nature mural, showing the water, the river bank, reed beds, and wildlife - a heron, fish, dragonflies, an otter, a kingfisher and more. Over the next week they gradually coloured it in and it looked fantastic - I went past a few days ago and it was amazing.
I walked past it again today and some total <word I'm not allowed to use> had sprayed over parts of it with a can of red paint, and on the remaining section of whitewashed wall next to the mural, had written in foot-high letters "I just wrote on your wall. Take that Society!" followed by a line drawing of a hand with the middle finger raised.
What is wrong with people!?!
No wonder you're furious! Hope they catch the culprit.

Very sorry to hear that Knightowl, really is infurating!
Real shame Knightowl that there are people around us who take delight in damaging other people's hard work for their community. Hope they find those people. Hope your local community association will persevere and have another go and that it will be left alone for people in your community to enjoy.
I'm happy to be back among familiar faces.

That is disgusting Fiona. I completely understand your anger and sadness at this mindless vandalism. What kind of person (people) would do this sort of thing. And if they have a beef with society why show it in this way? Beats me.:sad:
KnightOwl that is terrible. They obviously have nothing better to do with their time. Hope they get caught and I hope the community repair the damage and repaint.
In Las Vegas, whenever any property gets "tagged", that's what they call this time of offense, the authorities come out take pictures of the vandalism and then repaint to cover it. It seems to work to some extent as the offenders seem to give up or move on but they do not get a lot of "pleasure" from it because it is dealt with pretty swiftly and there message is not there for long. They told me that they take pics so they can see a pattern and can often tell if it is the same person who is doing it from the style. Sometimes like this they catch them.
I am really sad that the inspirational 11 year old boy Harry Mosely (who had a huge following on twitter) who was fighing brain cancer has passed away. :crying: Despite his condition he raised £85,000 for brain cancer research. RIP Harry

This kind of brought about happy and sad tears from me. So sad to hear of another young boy's life, 6 year olf Jack Marshall who is deteriorating with brain cancer. But really touching to see people like Rooney, Ferdinand, Serena all going out of their way to help him. In paticular the help and support Jack Wilshere has shown is so touching and heart warming

I really don't know much about the sport either though just what hubbie tells me. He used to work there.

I'm really happy. Tennis, as you all know is our sport and Andy is our hero. Have seen him at Wimbledon, Flushing Meadows, the 02 and the DC. Our son very often interjects with "Why don't you go to the French Open as Dad has never visited Paris?" Holidays are precious and I was so grateful when husband agreed to go to the US Open as part of my 70th birthday celebrations. This evening we went for a meal and were discussing our 2012 holiday. Suddenly he said that we could go to Paris and the tennis. You could have knocked me down with a feather. I have been to Paris three times and he has never been. For years I have said we should go together. Never, in a million years, did I think that I could go to Roland Garros and at the same time enjoy Paris with this old fella I've lived with for nearly 48 years. He obviously listens to our son, bless 'em. Am excited. Need any advice you can give re tickets etc, hotels.... I will await your advice, Thanks. I am on a high!!!!:tennis::boogie::big grin:

Fantastic - go for it and have a great time - green with envy here! If you really want to do it on a budget there is a hotel at Place d'Italie called Fiap Jean Monet - it is non profit making, (built with an endowment bequeathed by a philanthropist) so really reasonable but actually very good - we've been there many times. It is very close to the Metro so makes the centre of the city easily accessible.

I guess this may sound a bit selfish, but after Dave's accident a few weeks ago, I've found myself far more tuned in to these things than I was before - Dave & I both heard the reports on the radio of the crash on the M5 yesterday, and it felt far more personal than these thing usually do, after what he's been through. Really horrible, and I feel for the families of those affected - I kind of know what they're going through, now, and my heart goes out to them.
the thing you realize when you are involved in a serious accident is that its just a big lottery sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time
KnightOwl
06-11-2011, 15:24
That's exactly right - sometimes you have to make a split-second decision in a horrible situation, and there's no guarantee you're going to get it right, or even that there's anything you can do!
Horrible horrible accident. Younger son was reporting on it for ITV but luckily from the hospital on Saturday and only from the scene yesterday. The part of his job I don't approve of is that he actually had to go knocking door to door to try to get interviews from the bereaved. He did get one family phoning him back to say he'd been the most sensitive and kindest reporter and so they were willing to do it........but all the same I wish the media wouldn't do this :shamed:

Had a really lovely afternoon yesterday. Went to visit a friend I used to work with. Three weeks ago she had a baby boy and this was my first visit. He was absolutely gorgeous but seemed so tiny!! I had two long cuddles with him and he slept the whole time. So lovely to hold a baby...it's been a while.

Well, yesterday was happy as at last got a new, up-to-date phone. A Samsung Galaxy Mini...a bit cheaper contract than the one I had looked at. Daughter-in-law spent ages setting it up, getting twitter and facebook, showing me how to take and upload photos. Really sad today as have had a very frustrating time as I just simply don't know what to do. Everything is confusing me. I have the very small print in the booklet carefully, even been on line and read all the instructions carefully but about the only things I can do is switch on, look at fb messages, same for twitter but don't know how to reply!! Can't find anywhere to add contacts and it took me over 10 munutes to send a four word text to my son (whose number was put in by d-in-l) as the next letter or the letter above kept coming up!!:shamed: I was thinking that I'll be paying monthly and not using the damn thing.:crying: A friend who lives nearby (younger than I) is coming round tomorrow to help. Perhaps I'm not meant to have new technology!!!
I was seriously thinking of getting a Samsung Galaxy. Maybe I'll stick with my basic phone after all.

Give it a bit of time Maureen - new phones are always a bit confusing to begin with, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it all, and as you gradually learn the new features, I'm sure you'll love it!
Until my latest phone, I always went for Samsung as their user interface is generally really good, and easy to learn, so I'm sure you'll be fine....

It's done through a charity called Samaritan's Purse - they definitely operate in Canada, as well as the US and Australia. I googled the Canada website, but there was a problem connecting - if I manage to get it I'll let you know.
I just love doing the boxes - it's completely addictive, but so worthwhile, and the videos of the children's reactions opening the boxes have me reaching for the tissues every time!!

after you have added your phone you can simply send text messages to 86444. and the text will show up as a tweet from you
there is a list of commands you can use in the text message to give you more options

you can also add/remove people from your phone/tweets by clicking Clicking the phone icon on a users profile page or your followers page sets Tweet notifications for that user.
I use that and I've only got a basic phone. I send tweets to 86444. I only receive tweets on my phone that are addressed to me - they arrive like text messages - and I can't see the other tweets of the people I'm following. Enjoyed a lovely day at Manchester Christmas Markets today. We have been to many in Germany and this ranks with the best we have seen there. So many fantastic stalls selling really lovely Christmas goodies. A bit pricey as mostly German and European goods. Went with our son and his family and had a great day. It even stopped raining when we got there. It was very crowded but everyone seemed in a festive mood. We go every year as our son lives in Manchester and regard it as our first festive occasion of the season. I bought a lovely dress ring but had to prevent myself from spending any more....so tempting!

Beware - the ones with 4 wheels have a life/mind of their own and can scoot off unbidden (nothing to stop them if they get tilted off say a luggage trolley and land on all fours!), as I discovered when mine was lost at Faro airport. It had slid off on its own but fortunately turned up safe and sound eventually!

Definitely not. I recently re-homed a 10 year old collie who had retired from working but was getting depressed at not getting out to work anymore. If the new owners are being strictly honest then she has never had even a slight accident in the house despite never having been inside in her life until now.

'fraid not, but I did search for one, just for you :big grin:
Didn't manage to find one with a transparent background, though, as you can see from your quote - needs some work...
Sounds like she took in a homeless person for Christmas, but he's made off with the family silver! :rolling:

IIRC Allyb came up with very good response to stealing ideas a long time ago in a land far far away in the mists of time (so he's probably forgotten ...)

I think we've got a mouse living in the wall!
We keep hearing scraping noises, but there's nothing to be seen - even shining a torch where the noise comes from shows nothing, but you can still hear the noise which is what makes me think it's in the wall - if it could see the light from the torch, I would think it would go quiet, no? Plus one of the cats has spent a large proportion of the last two days either crouched on the floor beside the hi-fi cabinet, or perched on one of the speakers, peering intently at the wall with her ears pricked.
:grrr:
Isn't having cats supposed to prevent this sort of thing??

I did 20mins this evening (backstroke) and it wasn't quite non-stop .......
Spent nearly as long in the jacuzzi afterwards - all in the name of keeping the dodgy knees going!
;)
