Thanks guys, we are all really proud and super excited.
Now she's getting some more training while we sort travel arrangements etc. She was so pleased with herself, the world championships will be harder and she was nervous in her first round at nationals so I hope she can get a handle on it. I won't be able to make it to watch but I'm hoping her mother can, it's super expensive as you can't just go as a spectator, to watch you have to travel with and fly with them, they don't fly Ryan air.
I am trying to convince her that getting to this stage is a huge achievement, but she's so competitive she won't have it. 14 years olds are so stubborn lol

Hope your granddaughter is feeling better goldfish

Today for the first time in my life for some strange reason I wound up on the play store looking at recommended apps for me.
And I don't think we have to worry about google profiling us all as it was filled with silly games that I would never play even
if I had the time. Along with a shocker called lesbian chat, well what is that all about.
Although the last of them made me chuckle it was £3.99 and called Goat simulator.

I went to the funeral today of a lovely lady from our church. She spent her life doing so much for others, including setting up and running a luncheon club for the elderly. But she contracted Motor Neurone Disease, and for two and a half years has been completely paralysed apart from being able to slightly rock her head back. Despite that she remained cheerful to the end. Her devoted husband went to the nursing home every day and spent all day with her. I expect he will feel rather lost now that she's finally gone.

Aw Linda that's so sad - folk will need to really rally round to support him - he will miss her terribly and the routine of going to visit her - my Mum in law still suffers from depression as a result of having given up everything to care for father in law - it will be 10 years in November since he died from Alzheimers, it took her 18 months to realise this was how life was going to be now and it was downward spiral since then ... she's now almost 92 and struggling so much ... we try to help her as much as we can but she's a determined old bird and our suggestions fall on deaf ears .... literally .... hearing aids were one of the suggestions ;)

Hi All! Just back after a few days off! It has made me happy to report that I had my second eye op yesterday and I am so glad all seemed to go well. Great excuse now to watch (guilt free) tennis and to binge watch some TV I had been missing! It also makes me happy to report that I will be going to a 104th birthday party in a few days. The lady in question is so amazing. She has every faculty working, is still mobile, has bought new clothes for her birthday and loves Andy! There was a period last October when she wasn't well and I really feared for her, but that has long gone and she is wonderful now. The only problem I have is what on earth do you buy a 104 year old for her birthday!!

Great news about your op Pat - I have a similar dilemma on the birthday gift front - not quite such an impressive age but my mum in law will be 92 next week ... she's still driving :sofa: and reasonably fit - health not quite so good at the moment so hopefully she's done my suggestion and called the doc this morning but sadly my suggestions fall on deaf ears quite a lot at the moment as she thinks my offers of help are interference .... mainly cos she knows full well she should've stopped driving about 2 years ago .... I do wish that more could be done by the government to regulate older drivers - form filling, without the need for any real medical or ability checks really isn't a good idea .... her licence has another year to run .... it's terrifying really. She's so determined though and that's what keeps her going which is great! (up to a point!) Hope you find something for your 104 year old!

Just seen this idea on Pinterest for birthday present suggestion. This is for a 'special' birthday but obviously you can adapt the idea in part or whole for any birthday. In case the link doesn't work, the idea is that you look at headlines from the person's year of birth and choose something appropriate to match e.g. 1953 was the year of the Queen's coronation so they bought the DVD of 'The King's Speech', warm gloves for the Everest climb, favourite sweets for the end of sweet rationing. You could also look at events that happened on the day of someone's birthday, any year, I guess. Just a thought.

Yes - you can also get newspapers of the day of someone's birth.

Delighted that my son Paul has been made permanent as political correspondent (it started out as a maternity cover) and so he'll stay on national tv moving from ITV to ITN which is what he's long wanted.

I love it but living on an island can be a challenge sometimes! A couple of weeks ago I took our dogs for their annual booster and, whilst there, asked the vet to have look at a couple of lumps that had suddenly appeared on our six year old lab, Jess. We both thought they were just fatty lumps but the vet decided to do a biopsy just to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, one of them turned out to be a cancerous tumour and we were duly referred to the small animal hospital in Glasgow. The appointment came through for last Tuesday - which was ideal as it was half term week and my daughter could come home to look after her dad whilst I was away. It just happens that our neighbour has a pied a terre in Glasgow just across the road from the vet hospital - fantastic! I booked the ferry for Monday and I was all set. What did Burns say about 'the best laid plans' ....................? On Sunday, we were just about to go out for lunch with our daughter when my neighbour rang to say that all the boats on Monday were cancelled because of high winds. Lunch abandoned, I phoned Calmac to ask if I could get on the Sunday afternoon ferry. I was in luck - there was one space left. I threw things in a bag and set off - it was 2.00 p.m. We set sail and reached the mainland port at 6.00 p.m. and were all called down to the car deck. We sat in our cars for half an hour while nothing went on happening. At last there was an announcement - the winds had made it impossible to dock and we were turning around and heading back to Islay. Rats - there was now no way we could make our appointment! It was worse for other passengers though - one was going for an elective caesarean section the next day, another was going for a knee replacement that she had waited months for! I eventually arrived back home at 9 o'clock - my poor lumpy dog had been in the car for seven hours! That wasn't the end of the story though ................. oh, the joys of island living!!

The hospital was absolutely wonderful - much more accommodating than hospitals that cater for humans! I rang and they asked if we could get there for Wednesday at 9.00 a.m. Looking at the forecast, I thought we could, so said yes. Silly me! I went to the ferry terminal and asked if I could get on any boat on Tuesday to be met with - probably no boats on Tuesday and if any did go they'd be full - the earliest we could get you on a boat is Wednesday at 7.00 a.m! Okay, so if we went on that boat we could make Glasgow for 12.30 p.m. Back to the hospital - could they take us on Wednesday afternoon instead of Wednesday morning? The very helpful receptionist said Oncology didn't usually do tests in the afternoon but she would ask. She came back to say that they would take us at 2.00 p.m. - God bless Oncology!! I duly left home at 5.45 a.m. on Wednesday morning and arrived at the hospital for 1.30 p.m. - left my quivering Jess and was told to come back at 5.00 p.m. I thought I would go and find something to eat. Fed and watered, I headed back to the hospital. The left filter came on at the lights at Bearsden Cross - I filtered left - a very young driver coming from the opposite direction didn't see the left filter - turned right and demolished my offside front wing!!! I was beginning to think the Gods just weren't on my side!

I arrived back at the hospital to pick up Jess to be told by the lovely young oncologist (why do medics all look so young these days?) that Jess definitely needed surgery. So how long are we likely to have to wait I asked? i thought two or three weeks at the very least - or probably two or three months. Well, he thought, as you have come so far, we will try to do it tomorrow or Friday - would that be okay? Would it be okay? Of course it would be okay - could you ever imagine that happening in the NHS?! Anyway, he said he would have to suss out if a theatre was available and let me know. I waited and waited. I didn't like to phone home unless I missed the hospital's call but by 8 o'clock I thought it was unlikely that they would call that evening so I phoned home and spoke to my husband - we spoke about my unfortunate bump for a while and then he said - 'Oh, and by the way I think the vet rang'. 'What did he say?' says I? 'I don't remember,' says he, 'was it important?':grrr: Not his fault, of course, but why or why didn't the vet phone my mobile?

On Thursday morning the hospital phoned to say could I have Jess there by 8.30 a.m. - of course I could. I dropped off my quivering Jess and went off to waste a day, trying not to think about my poor baby. At 5.00 p.m. the hospital phoned to say that the operation had been successful - she was in intensive care while she recovered but they thought I could pick her up in the morning. Back to Calmac - please, please, please could we get on a ferry sometime on Friday? I knew our daughter had to leave on Saturday at the latest to get back to work for Monday and her dad couldn't be left on his own. There was space on the midday ferry but could I make it? I arrived at the hospital at 8.30 and made myself a perfect nuisance until they discharged Jess at 9.15 a.m. She whinged for Scotland all the way back to the ferry but we eventually got home at 4.00 p.m. Mission accomplished. We won't know whether she needs chemo or radiotherapy until the results of the tests come through next week but we're home and we live to tell the tale. What a week! Life on a Hebridean island is different, sometimes challenging and often frustrating but it's certainly never boring!!!

Sorry Alis, bit late with this :shamed: but very best wishes to Jess for a speedy recovery, from me and my little furbie, the eponymous Rosiebear. I'd also like to share a tip, if that's ok...I swear by giving my dogs goats milk. It's considered a superfood for all dogs, but is especially good for dogs with health issues. Raw milk is best, and its enzymes have been shown to reduce cancerous growths, but raw is very difficult to get hold of in our nanny State  (no goat related pun intended :rolling:). But pasturised is still also very good - I give mine a bowlful every morning and I really do think they get great benefits from it - in fact, when poor RB tore a claw out and splayed her little pad, the vet told me she'd never seen a dog heal so quickly, and even asked about her diet.
Thought I'd just share this, because in my experience many owners, perhaps because cows milk is bad for dogs, tend to overlook goats milk too.
Plenty of info on the internet if you want to know more. https://www.aplaceforpaws.com/great-reasons-add-raw-goats-milk-dogs-diet/
Keep well Jess :maggie:

I've just had a call from the oncologist to say that some of the tests on the tumour have come back inconclusive. Seemingly, there are some inconsistencies, so they will have to run another batch of tests. He's still hopeful that they have got it all and Jess won't need chemo, so fingers are still definitely crossed. Interesting to hear about the benefits of goats milk, RB. We have a herd of feral goats that frequent our beach - I wonder how one goes about milking a goat? Seriously, though, I'll have a look for it in the supermarket next time I go to the mainland or maybe I can source it online.

Teresa
22-02-2017, 17:54
@ Rosiebear - do you know if goats milk got any benefits for dogs with dodgy stomachs? Mine has some problems - I assume from being on the streets and eating whatever she could to survive.

@ Alis hope Jess's next set of tests sort things out. Could the stress of going have anything to do with the inconsistencies? When my cat went in for a senior cat check, her blood tests came back as her having almost zero white blood count. She should have been really ill, meanwhile she carried on slaughtering the local rodent population and swearing at me. Eventually after repeated tests showing the same thing we concluded it was the stress of the tests and the General Anaesthetic.

Oh bless her, Teresa. A major feature of goats milk is that it's very digestible, much more so than cows milk because it doesn't have lactose, so definitely worth trying as it has health benefits for all dogs. Like your Millie, my mum's dog Leo was a Romanian street dog who had to forage to survive, and his sensitive tum is fine with goats milk (and he loves a warm bowlful :)).

This made me smile a lot yesterday....My friend and I were shopping and the time came to go for a coffee. As we were waiting to be served, it struck me how very uncannily alike the young male barista was to Dan Evans, beard and all! I couldn't stop watching him as the likeness was so striking. Eventually, I couldn't help myself any longer so I asked him if anyone had ever told him he looked like Dan Evans. Immediately his eyes lit up and he said no, he hadn't been told that. I asked him if he knew who Dan was and oh yes, he did as he watches tennis! Whereupon he dived behind the counter, grabbed his phone and immediately sourced a photo of Dan! All we could hear were shrieks of laughter and great nods of approval as indeed he thought he looked very like Dan! All his co-workers were amazed! I brought up a photo of Dan I had taken in Glasgow to show him as well, and within seconds he had it all on Facebook!! It seemed to make his day! He walked on air with such a broad grin on his face for the remainder of our time there. I wish I had taken a picture of him making the coffee! As we were in a town about 35 minutes drive from here, I probably won't see him again! It was so uplifting to see how that made him so happy!

I still remember one of the worst street dogs experiences I ever had. We were driving through Bulgaria for work in Greece and ha stayed a few days in Sofia. After a couple of frightening shake downs and irritating card clones we were relived to be leaving when driving out of the city there was something in the road. As we got closer it was clear, one dog that looked like a street dog had been hit by a car, and another that was really skinny was eating it! Seriously haunted me for ages. I didn't notice a lot of strays in Belgrade when we were wandering but I guess I was distracted. There have been a lot around in different places we've travelled to. I thought Bulgaria was the worst but KevD said there were a lot more about when he was working in turkey.

A happy thought to go with that sadness... KevD's hotel featured an American sportstar yesterday, he didn't know of the guy but lots of people were there to see him. When he got talking to the woman at reception she said that he was there to sign autographs and people had paid $40 dollars to come and get things signed. Kev said doesn't he sign things for free and she said no he's a superstar. Kev then asked her if she watched tennis and had heard of Andy Murray, she said she did but had only heard of Serena Williams. After telling her the Andy was World number one he told that he signs things for free and for a lot of fans. He then showed her a picture of Andy and me at the DC. She couldn't believe that a star would do that for free when he could charge! I know it's Boston and everything is expensive there, but yikes! Finally a step towards ending touting...it is one of my Of my biggest annoyances. I'm sure many of us have got up early and waited in an online queue forever only to be pushed further and further to the back and end up without those tickets you wanted. It drives me to distraction. Sadly "the bots" are only one part of this but it is a step.
There is certainly more artists can do. I have Laura marling tickets for this weekend (that is now sold out of course), but something she did which would have put off some touts, was to announce the sale in the fan club first, then offer the option to get a code for the tour sale if you purchased the album. I would have got the album anyway do the only difference was I preordered to get the code. Then used it to get tickets in the presale, where you could only get a limited number. It wouldn't have prevented all touts but it is the first gig in a while, for which I was successful in getting tickets. .http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39239133?SThisFB

I'm going to see The Pixies in Glasgow, and their anti-tout method is to put the lead booker's name on all tickets, and insist that the lead booker then produces ID at the entrance to get their whole group in, so no having one person show up late...

My superstar niece had another big national competition for kickboxing. Although she is going to represent GB in October she is still doing the other comps to improve. In her last nationals, in order to qualify for teamgb, she got the bronze. This was in February. She worked really hard since then and so at 14 years old, she competed in the advanced 16 and over category.

Her black belt opponent broke Becky's nose in the first 30 seconds but she insisted on continuing. As her family we'd sooner she stopped then and gave it up but it's her choice of sport so that would be selfish of us. She continued anyway and she won!! She took first place and a massive trophy. So from third to first in 9 weeks!! Just evidence of all the hard work she has been putting in. She will continue to work hard and train hard. When it comes to the World Championships I know she will make her country as proud as she makes her family.

Her biggest concern was that her broken nose meant she couldn't compete in her other catagories that day incase in was damaged further. Today she has been to have it reset. I wish she could have picked something a little less risky, like chess for example lol

Congrats to your niece , she is obviously really good !

JerryD
03-04-2017, 15:35
It's just so scary. She was really good at tennis and badminton but ended up dropping the tennis and sticking with badminton. She then added kickeboxing. Though she was equally as good at both when she the time came to drop one to focus on the other it was badminton she dropped. She enjoyed the kickboxing more. She has training and sparring sessions 5 days a week and the general fitness on her days off. But when you see her take a kick to the face and all that blood. I just wish she would have picked badminton. It's what she wants but it's just horrible. She isn't allowed to get back in the ring until her nose has healed. Which she's not happy about as she has the European championships in may! She is really good but it's just unbearable to watch.
Sounds like you've been there ljs, and like your daughter was really good too :) I just hope a broken nose is as bad as it gets, though I have already been told that I'm naive lol

She does. She loves it and she is fearless. We support her in her choices just hard to watch her getting hurt. Though I guess there are injuries in all sports. Her coach took a bit of a hammering from other people there for letting her enter with girls who were older and advanced but it is what she wanted. She trains hard for this and so gets to decide. She is mature about it too, whilst she knows she has to be out of the ring for a bit and she moaned she didn't really carry on about it. She decided to focus on the areas she could until she has healed. She Europeans in may and worlds in October so there could be more injuries in her future. But she needs our support so we have to just try not to wince when she gets hurt.

Thank you pat. She has had it reset today. She says it doesn't hurt but that doesn't mean much. She also has a black eye and countless bruises. But her biggest annoyance today was that it was so long in the hospital that she missed school and now has lost her perfect attendance. She's nuts.

Yes it was so hard for me too . She bugged her dad & I for 2 years when she was 13 before we let her try it . We thought the first punch to the face might be the end of her love for it , but nooooo , it made her even more determined LOL . She was a natural , and I will never forget her telling us that it made her so happy !!! One good thing was that it kept her focused and on the straight path thru her teens , she was always at the gym . Expensive tho , lots of travelling and weekends away at tournaments and stuff , but she grew into a wonderful young woman , who is now a mom :)

My 92 year old mum in law has finally given up driving .... unfortunately it was forced on her after she wrote her car off this afternoon on the way to the village for a paper. She still thinks she's ok to drive .... she hasn't been ok to drive for quite a while bless her. She has been struggling with lots of different things and we've been really concerned about her driving for quite a long time and been trying to persuade her it was time to stop, until today she managed to drive into a livestock float which was stationary on the road .... her car's a write off, the float is minus 2 wheels and the vehicle which was pulling it now has a badly buckled towbar .... talk about chaos. I came on the car sitting in the middle of the road - float had been moved by then so it was the strangest thing to find an abandoned car in the middle of the road. The farmer had taken her into his truck and gone down to the village, thankfully my friend was behind me and had spotted her sitting in the truck so I was able to go back and get her. She's pretty sore from the seatbelt but still thinks she can get a new car ..... ain't happening - no insurer would touch her now .... it's not going to be a cheap claim to resolve. Heard today she's been telling folk she is not giving up driving  It's like having a stroppy toddler again. We say no and she disagrees.... So worrying and very wearing.

Could you get a friendly local police officer to take her to the cells for an hour, and point out if they do her for dangerous driving she might get a custodial sentence, but voluntarily giving up her licence will help her case. They do it with stroppy teenagers. There are lots of cases of people her age actually going to prison. Would someone from Age concern come and talk to her? She might take it better from someone else.

What about the fact the medics are going to view her refusal to recognise the need to give up as a sign of deteriorating cognitive function, so she will lose the licence anyway.

What about a few horrific u tube videos of car crashes, with bits of people scattered about.

You could also send her out with a driving instructor who will give her a report on her driving and the likelihood of her passing a re-test. I think lots of places do it.

Just a few ideas. I imagine it will be better for family relationships if she reaches the decision her self.

Had a mistake in work spiral into a huge mess that kept growing. It's been 10 weeks and getting worse every week. Bad news followed by bad news. But today for the first time in 10 weeks there was good news. It will still take about 4-6 weeks to deal with everything that resulted from it but at least that work can finally start. Things can start to get better and soon they will be back to normal!! I can't wait.

Happy it is now just over 2 weeks until our Peru adventure, downside the results our in and it be well over £300 to repair my lens inc vat and delivery! A new one is £400!. As I've only had for 5 years I'm not that happy about the motor going. But I'm sure the jungle rainstorm followed by dusty trails aided to its end. I'm not rough with it, there's not a mark on the thing. Just a whole lot of refusing to focus, sometimes refusing to zoom and making a whole lot of noise. Apparently it's not the right kit for the places I've been taking it to. Now admittedly when we were in Tanzania there was an armature photographer there with some of the most amazing kit and he did tell me that my lens was hobbiest and probably not the best sealed big of kit. But my money won't stretch to L series so I stuck with my one.

Looks like the wildlife will have to get really close as the zoom lens will not be coming! Although the chances of a rare otter sighting probably increase with an inability to catch it in a photo lol

It's with great sadness that I write this, a sadness I have never known before, a sadness and pain I would never wish upon anyone not even the most evil that have ever lived.

On Thursday evening 11-5 2017 at around 8pm. My beautiful and very talented 13 year old granddaughter took her own life.

She had been diagnosed with EDS Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which I had never heard of before, but am getting to know now.
The pain that she was in must have been excruciating. Yet she never complained out loud.
She was a very talented rider, had the highest grades in school she even played the Harp beautifully.

So I would like to ask all of you to make as many as you can aware of this silent killer. Especially as May is EDS awareness month.

I am going to try and post a link to #rideforlilly on face book below:

So, so sorry Jagmad. What a terrible shock for you, your family and friends. I can only imagine the pain you must all be feeling. Certainly puts a lot of things in perspective. :grouphug:

I am aware of EDS, but wasn't until a co-workers daughter was diagnosed about 5 years ago. We worked at a school that she attended, her mother was the principal, and I saw the pain she went through to even get to school some days. She loved ballet and continued to push herself but some times the pain was just too much. I think she was fortunate that it was a small school, like family, and a lot of people were aware of what she was going through.

From what I remember, changing her diet was one of the main things she did.

Here in the States, more people are becoming aware of it and we do need to bring this awareness to the forefront in order to help these sufferers.

Hi everyone quick update:
Sorry it's been so long but to be honest I've been so focused on supporting my baby girl.
Lilly-anna was her only child and I promise you all she was her whole world, and although I don't even know how to begin to explain how I feel (physically) it will have to suffice to say
I have never felt anything like this before, and normally I'm so reasoned and measured. I'm still that person on the face of it but I'm so frightened of loosing both my little girls, I'm
just concentrating my focus on Jodieanne and making sure she has something to keep her busy hence the charity to bridge the gap between EDS Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Mental health services.
Just gonna have to be ready for when she hits the brick wall. Which I think I'm close to myself.
Teresa has already posted a link to our crowd funding page which I thank her very much for.:flowers:
I know £25'000 is a big ask but this is a massive problem and we had to be realistic, and that's for just one year. Funding one office and phone line for kids and their families.
(P2P is so important in the first instance especially for children) She's getting offers of help from everywhere, but the problem is organising it all
Hopefully the required people will pick it up and run with it fingers crossed. So far Jodie has been asked to appear on sky news by a lady from the mental health charity H/O to highlight to problem.
I've told her that maybe right now is probably not the right time, although as she said this May is mental health month (along with EDS) and it's being backed by Wills and Kate.
So I guess she's frightened of missing the boat as she puts it. I'm just not sure??????? Sigh
When the time is right and I finally have the strength for a game, I'm going to ask the Poker community to see what they can offer, do we think it's to cheeky to ask Andy's team??
We're already on it with our other interests/communities etc.

I now have a new mantra, a thought that hit me in the first couple of day's. I am called jagmad on all all my different forums and poker sites, and the Jaguar slogan is
Grace, Space, Pace,1309
and I quickly realised that what I needed to do to keep my thought's in check and not upset anyone more than they already are, was to.
Have the Grace to give people the Space to go at their own Pace.

All the info on what's happening if any of you are interested is on jodies facebook page... I've copy and pasted address link below,
if it don't work just search for Jodieanne Winter on FB and put in a friend request.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154606616378951&set=a.10151646751048951.1073741830.538173950&type=3

Finally thankyou to all of you for your kind words of comfort and sympathy.
Hopefuly I'll be back on here my same old self some day although the way I feel now I very much doubt it.

Thanks again.:thanks::sleepy:

NB. Pics of the dolphins might cheer me up!!

To my beautiful, gorgeous, kind, generous, forgiving, loving and very talented little girl.
We miss you so much words don't even come close. XXXXXXX
Rest in peace.

Well as I spend more time on here than any other site here is what Jodie organised while I was at work all day
trying to catch up. (Well done my angel.)

Not sure yet how or what they will be made from but we want one of these to eventually be given to every child diagnosed with EDS.
With the necessary contact info on how to move forward in a positive way give out at the same time.

NB. As you may already know many people of all ages are walking around in pain unaware they have EDS having been to the
doctors and getting nowhere. So take a look at Jo's Day 9 post providing the knowledge including the diagnostic check list you
should take with you, if you think you may have the symptoms of any of the different types of EDS.

My niece's teacher and her husband are among the injured but not clear yet how badly they were hurt. A work colleague was there but thankfully was unharmed.
