Thanks ljs - I have really come to appreciate some true friends who have tolerated my shorthand meltdowns.
I was dreaded failing either of those.. I had to talk one of my friends of a "ledge" because sadly they failed and wanted to quit (we have barely a month to go)... stress like nothing I have ever experienced...

Well done Rozzie!

Talking of taking up sports journalism for a career, today at Boodles I was talking to a lady who was there with her son - a sports reporter from the Sun. She said he'd had to do two years unpaid work experience before they took him onto the payroll.

I was hoping to take over press credentials from the person who gave me the chance to go to the Wimbledon Spring Press Conference early this year.
It was denied as I am only a trainee.
Gutted doesn't even begin to describe how I feel along with the fact that I am still nowhere near passing shorthand and have a second attempt at it tomorrow with only two more tries.
I am PIG SICK of people who think this cr*p is easy.
Seriously - go try learning something new while holding down a job and taking an over 50% pay cut and then tell me how I will have no problems with exams.

Not very happy at all.

EDIT: Not a gripe at anyone here - my idiot cousin bleating about how I am making a big deal over being stressed over exams when it's ok for her to b*tch and moan about her marking load as a lecturer.
Just off-loading.

It is with indescribable relief I can announce that I passed both News Reporting and Sports Journalism.
These exams were in the same week (stressful) and are so subjective, there is little you can revise for - you either write the stories with the right amount of content, accurately with no issues, or you don't and you fail.

What makes it all the more annoying is that local papers write in totally the opposite way to how the NCTJ teach you, yet they train you to work on print titles (i.e. locals/nationals).

I might have some uber exciting Wimbledon news but waiting for it all to be confirmed.

That leaves:
Court Reporting Exam
3 more attempts at shorthand
2 x features who quite frankly refuse to write themselves (very annoying)
Portfolio to be handed in on 14th July - thankfully full of local placement material already.

Oh yeah and wait - don't I get paid already to write? Why yes, yes I do! Congratulations....well-deserved after all your hard work.:clap:

Oldest member of our village girlie "coven" died this week of cancer at the age of 84 - she was a good 20 years older than the next oldest of us. She'll be sorely missed, a real character. Funeral next Friday. We were supposed to be going up to London by train Friday morning back Sunday - tickets for Taming of the Shrew on the Friday night. We've changed our plans and we're going to drive up so we can go to the funeral first and then we're just going to come straight back after the play - no heart for a weekend of jollity

I am also happy as it is my husband's 71st birthday and he can no longer say I am older than he is - we are going out for high tea and dancing at hotel in Largs tonight.

Came out of my flat this morning and noticed this wallet stuffed in-between the flower pots... Was all wet and must have been there over night. It has either been lost or stolen I don't know. I picked it up and had a look inside to see if there was any identification with a telephone number I could contact the individual to notify him that I've got his wallet. Guy is foreign, and one of the cards in the wallet was a Quantas membership number.... So i've called up Quantas, notified them on the matter given them the membership number on the card and they have the person's details in their system so have passed on my details to the man so he can contact me in order to receive his wallet.

Have I done the right thing here? I suspect the wallet may have been stolen as there was no money or bank cards in it just membership cards like Quantas and an Australian membership card.

Have been trying to help a classmate who has missed a lot of classes (some through illness, some through skiving) and they failed a couple of exams and were upset.
I picked up some past papers from our tutor, who can be a bit dappy. One was a duplicate and the other was the answers to our mock.
So you imagine how peeved I was when I got a text (because they didn't come in again) saying "these are duplicates - have you got any more for me/havr they got answers?"
this is not the first time I have done things to help out "youngsters" on the course and receive no thanks.
Were these little rats dragged up?

Anyway - I have decided that I have had it up to here with the obnoxious brats.
I am doing no more to help ANYONE on the course for ANYTHING.
You get no thanks and it detracts from my own studies and things I need to do (like pass bleedin' shorthand).
Saddens me that this is how younger people now behave.
no manners and expect everyone to do everything for them... hope they all get rude awakenings about the big bad world (ironically all of us on the part time course work for a living!)

Sadly it's gotten to the stage where I don't know that I actually want to go to the course do on Saturday.
If I get a ticket for Wimbledon, I am not going to bother, or maybe catch up with them in a bar somewhere much later in the evening.
It's a shame because my best friend on the course is really trying to gee me up, telling me not to let it annoy me and he's getting the "Shorthand World Cup" presented to him.
But I'd rather be sat in the gods on Centre watching tennis if I can manage it.
After all - that is why I did the damn course in the first place - in the hope of moving into Sports Journalism!

You want to try being on the tutor side of things - in the last 5/6 years or so it's become a nightmare - they're all little consumers who expect to have all the answers laid out on a plate. Oh and if they fail it isn't, of course, their own fault it's
a) the exam wasn't fair
b) we weren't taught well enough
c) the papers weren't marked correctly
d) the tutor has it in for me (erm.....they're all marked anonymously)

and that's all from would be lawyers. They won't know what's hit them when they get into practice - no firm is going to stand for that attitude and that's for sure!

The guy contacted me I just met up with him and I gave him his wallet. He was very thankful because the medical insurance card for example was very important. Said his wallet had been stolen on the tube, and that credit cards were taken but he cancelled them. Guy was very thankful, felt good to do a good deed like that. I'm no Florence Nightingale but it felt satisfying ;)

I can well believe it... My tutor came and sat with me to go through which papers he had given us as I had written all of them and the answers in a document to use for revision as the same court reporting questions come up over and over again... so for me it has been totally invaluable as a revision aid. And he was telling me it showed in my mock - although I didn't beat my star shorthand friend, I got the 2nd highest score in the mock and it always delights him (he says) when older students triumph.
I go to him and ask questions about stuff I don't get AFTER trawling through the book.
Others apparently whine that they can't be bothered... and expect him to all but sit the exam!
(he's also our Public Affairs teacher so let's hope he feels the same after I try and transcribe a yawnsome council call in meeting from way back in Feb and create a feature for my portfolio on it!!!!)

that same student was whining to me about why all bad things were happening to them on Friday - when I was sitting my shorthand exam for the second time, on the 6th anniversary of my dad passing away.
I am pretty sure that forgetting to set your alarm to come in for class/failing exams because you skived off a lot REALLLLLLLLY equates to the same.
In the last six years:
I lost my father suddenly.
Got pushed out of a job I liked with people who had become real friends
Worked for a bunch of off-shorers with bullying attitudes
Left a well paid job to write part time for less than half I was on, and JUST cover my costs (and I am dipping into my redundancy pay from the previous job now just to keep afloat).

They live at home. Their parents pay the bills, fill the fridges and freezers... do the laundry, sort out everything...
I can't wait to see how they have to deal with REAL adversity one day.

And sadly the wise old one of the class they used to whine to will listen no more.

Thanks very much Linda, Sally, Pabbers and Supergran. Hubby had a good birthday and we enjoyed our night out. Well done Dave, I am glad you were able to return to wallet to the proper person. My husband found a camera just over 2 months ago and handed it in to the police. They gave him a pink form and told him if it was not collected in 2 months he would get it back. It was not collected but police say they can't give it back because of the data protection act as there might be inappropriate images on the memory. We have pointed out to the police that the camera does not have an internal memory they just have to remove the card and the camera is wiped (we checked on internet and at Canon shop). They seem incapable of understanding this. The police will send it to a firm to wipe the memory and it will then go to auction. Doesn't seem fair and we would rather the owner had come forward and claimed it. My husband said perhaps he should have kept it and the policewoman said "well then you would have had it!!"

Tied second for nicest/best human being with one of my best friends on the course and we lost to the nicest person on the planet
And I got an tutors annual Shorthand Zero-to-Hero award for all the effort I have put in over the last few weeks.

My piece on Murray in a Hurry is up and I posted a link in the News and Internet thread.
And the exciting thing is that the editor I am writing for has sent me a link to get some accreditation so hopefully it means more chances to write for her.
It's still putting the "free" in freelance, and I felt a bit depressed getting some terse feedback from my client on my IT writing (which pays the bills).

But lessons learned - I am not working over Wimbledon again - I will take those two weeks off like I usually did as the combination of Tennis Panorama News, Chalkdust Chronicles, getting my features for my portfolio up on SWLondoner and/or Huffington Post, not to mention revising for exams, 3 hours of shorthand every morning, and having needy classmates stress me out... it's been quite a fortnight!

Yeah she is a loving cat just upsetting for me as I love most animals. We have had 3 cats before all males and they didnt bring us hardly anything. This is a female and we have only had her 10 months!

Really sad today. Rafa's knees are so bad that he's had to cancel the Madrid exho. I can't decide whether to still go and just do sightseeing (although July would not have been my preferred month to do that as I can't stand heat) or to just write off the cost of the airfare. :crying:

Spain is VERY hot at that time of year; the Madrilenos try to leave the city through August as it becomes unbearable. But there is so much to see there if you have a few days on your hands.

The whole exho has been cancelled. They say they hope to reschedule it at some time - but of course they won't be able to do it during the football season so I suppose it will be next year.

Well that's why the Spanish players themselves don't even like playing the Madrid event now; they've mentioned the altitude on more than one occasion. It's not good for any of the guys to play there on the clay swing because the conditions are so different to Roland Garros.

:grrr: arrived home from work today to find one of those "tried to deliver" cards waiting for me - the delivery man had ticked the "left in a safe place" box on the card, and written next to it "green bin".

The idiot had actually dropped it into our wheely bin, and seemed to think that was a good thing! There are several problems with this:

It's not exactly dry or clean in there!
Unless he had arms four feet long, he can't have placed it in there, he must have dropped it, so could have damaged it
I don't have arms four feet long either, so I can't actually get the damn thing out!

In what possible way can this be deemed a safe and/or sensible place to leave a package?!

Happy cause i recieved this comment :I liked Katie’s original take introducing a Facebook relationship, and how she managed to include her favourite subject with her protagonists’ shared delights in Prokofiev’s most famous ballet scene. And her idea of ‘sewing the fabric of their friendship together’ was nice.

I feel really quite sad today and I wanted to share it with you guys because you are the only people that will understand how I'm feeling.

I have a friend who I have known for many years, who has been very kind and supportive of me through some difficult times. When I became a big fan of Andy's 4 years ago, I found out to my great sadness that this friend does not like Andy. In fact they do not want him to succeed at all! Hence as you will appreciate, we very rarely discuss Andy and they are not an avid tennis follower anyway (4 majors at best) so it's relatively easy to avoid the subject most of the time. However as you will understand, Wimbledon generates much interest from the non-regular tennis viewers and this friend of mine knew how excited I was becoming at Andy's prospects (probably through my Facebook updates). Following Andy's defeat then, a conversation was surely to follow and needless to say, it didn't go well . My friend wasn't specifically unkind but the delight in Andy's loss was really evident and very hurtful to me. I tried to cover it up and I think my friend thought it was a bit silly how hurt I seemed and I ended up feeling liking a hopeless fanatic! Do any of you have similar situations and how do you cope? Perhaps we should have a thread to discuss this topic?

Yes and I appreciate the forum greatly for that reason. I don't have a problem with friends & family 'not liking' Andy, I know that he doesn't appeal to everyone but when a friend knows how much you care, it's hard not to be hurt and take it personally when they are so mean about Andy losing. I'll get over it I'm sure but it's good to be able to chat to other fans about it. :grouphug:

Yes, I've got a couple of Facebook friends like that - one ex-colleague and one old school friend - one of them is an avid Federer fan and doesn't particularly like Andy, the other isn't even much of a tennis fan, but is pretty vocal in her dislike of Andy. I just try not to get involved, as I really like both of them in every other respect. I just don't comment on their posts when they praise Fed or make pointed comments about Andy, and they ignore my pro-Andy posts, so as long as we stick to that rule, we get on ok - sometimes I could quite happily strangle the pair of them, though :)

I actually unfollowed someone on Twitter on Sunday because they called Andy a "grumpy git"... I just feel it's disrespectful insulting someone you know a friend of yours admires/likes when they could very well be reading your comment. I don't even understand why people feel the need to insult celebs on a public platform like that to begin with. I would never do that. I don't have a problem with people not liking Andy at all, but I felt personally insulted. Especially since he had just lost the biggest match of his career and I was in tears already. That's not something a true friend would do IMHO. And he certainly knows how much I like Andy and wanted him to win.

I also had a lovely post from an old school friend who lives in Australia who said much the same and then her brother came on with the ABE incident & anti Scottish stuff. Genbrit, this is my friend's problem and believe me I have tried to put the incident in its correct context, i.e. that Andy was being teased about the Scottish football team, but sadly I have found that once minds are made up, nothing will change them. I think you therefore did the right thing in not responding, there is just no point.

Sad to get an email from my bro' to say his Golden Retriever had to be transferred to the great kennel in the sky yesterday; never easy saying goodbye to loved pets. I picked Max out from 2 litters of 9week old pups and collected him 4 weeks later for onward shipment to Bermuda where he's lived the last 14yrs. He was the gentlest giant of a dog I've ever come across so I'm a bit upset today.

Happily they have another dog to keep them on their toes - a black bitsa from a rescue home who is very skittish and scared of people even now after several years of being well looked after.

What a pain. At least you can have more goes.

Many years ago, after I finished school and before I went to University, I did a crash course in typing and speedwriting so I could get work in holidays. I got the speedwriting eventually after a few attempts, but that is easier than normal shorthand. It took me lots of goes to pass the typing though.

I'm happy because I'm alive. How many of you have said that? Husband and I went out for a meal tonight and thought it would be a quiet one. We met two groups of friends that we hadn't seen for a while and it was party time!! Invited to join two groups which was a bit of a dilemma. We stayed on our own but were visited by various friends. Eventually first group left so we joined the second group and had a rather riotous evening. So unusual on a Thursday but our friends, who don't have children, were meeting with siblings, in-laws and nephews and nieces. We knew most of them and had a lovely evening. Supergramps kept insisting it was his bed time but his rugby mates from the family group kept him there until about 9.30. He is in bed now, bless him and I'm not! Might have a little glass of wine!

So sad to hear that Neil Armstrong has died. I grew up with the Apollo programme and loved following all the missions. I'll never forget watching that first moon landing - what a moment!

25-08-2012, 21:38
I'm afraid I was only two when the first moon landing happened, so I don't remember it, but it was such an iconic moment that I've heard and read about so often it almost feels like I do remember it. Very sad news - people often use the phrase "end of an era" but I think this definitely counts as one.

Yes very sad news! Couldn't experience the moment either but like many know so much about it and was always fascinated! The first Man on The Moon certainly was a historical event and for all he achieved Neil Armstrong was by all accounts very modest.

Although I remember it- I was a schoogirl at the time - I don't think I really appreciated what a great achievement it was as I grew up with the space programme. I think it was much more momentous for people of my parents' and grandparents' ages, as when they were young it would have been something almost unthinkable. My mother told me that when she and my father were young, she used to say that one day we would put a man on the moon, and my father said she was talking science fiction and it would never happen.

I am so delighted Andy is in the final and has a real shot of his first title.
But I am going to miss it on Monday - gutted.
I am going before the might of the the NUJ Freelance branch (ha - my first EVER union meeting) to see if they will consider me for an accredited press pass.

A handful of people I consider friends here know how absolutely crushing it was for me to miss out on a Gold Standard diploma after failing to get shorthand at 100wpm. I have a useless piece of paper that means nothing after 10 hard months of sacrifice.

I had a golden opportunity to stand in for someone at Wimbledon but was refused accreditation as I was only a trainee journalist and was refused membership to the Sports Journalist association even after writing for a tennis media site that is well recognised and respected in the US because they didn't feel I was a qualified journalist.

They say this industry is a lot about luck. So while Andy is doing battle - I am hoping that the professional writing will be enough to get me a press pass and the resulting accreditation will help me slowly break into sports writing.

I dunno - sometimes (despite another punishing round of redundancies at my old company) would I have been better just staying put?

Anyway - those who know how tough the past couple of years have been, and the last few months in particular - wish me luck.

Never mind happy or sad, I am STRESSED! (Maybe we should have a thread for what is making you stressed! :rolling:)

I am supposed to be moving house on 4th October. I am buying a new house from Barretts and they are buying my house in part exchange. The deal is subject to exchange of contracts by next Friday and completion by the Friday after. I was already having serious trouble with the completion date because of the amount of stuff we have here that we have got to get rid of.

Today they said they wanted to complete by next Friday, i.e. a week earlier, so they can get the deal in their quarterly figures! I basically said that I couldn't give a stuff for their quarterly figures, there is no way I can be ready to move next week. So now we are indeed completing next Friday but I will have 'leave to occupy' my present house until I actually move.

All the time I am trying to clear out stuff, I constantly have people in to measure up etc. because they have put it up for sale with several agents. I hope the photos that they have all taken with all the rooms full of boxes and bags of stuff will not be on the internet. It is doing my head in.

Then today I tried to arrange telephone and broadband for my new house but was unable to do so because the postcode has not been registered! I looked it up and all the other houses on the developement have the postcode registered except this one, so it must have been an oversight. AAAARGH!

I am totally sick of Talk Talk (who took over Tiscali) so I don't want to continue with them, but if I move with them I have to sign up for another 12 months! I really need to have the same phone number, though (I am moving within the same area) but because of not wanting to stick with Talk Talk I don't know if I will be able to. More problems! I wanted to change from Talk Talk to Orange a while ago, but my contract wasn't due to end until September (now). And I have just had my monthly bill and it has gone up by £5 because my contract has ended by one day! AAAARGH!

Oh Linda - they don't jest when they say that moving house is the most stressful thing - hope it all clears up for you.

I sat my FIFTH attempt at 100wpm on Friday (FIFTH, what a joke)... closest attempt yet but possibly too many wrong words and I deffo had 5 gaps that I counted and maddeningly one EXTRA word in the second passage.
I am really cross as the journo school originally told us we could come back as often as we wanted, being their ex-students. So I decided to take my time and go right back to building up stamina over the 2 minutes, which was where I was having way too many errors (average 18 in just that section - you can only have 9 in total).
Then we got told that they were not having any exams in October, and that there were no places in Nov/Dec because of their current large numbers of students likely to be taking the exams.
So I had only a week to get up to 100wpm speed.
What really makes me angry is that when I went to pick up my portfolio, the tutor said no such thing and was all "just come in for lessons and don't worry if you don't get it in September, people have got it far later in the year than that".

If she had said THEN, there is no space for Nov/Dec, I would have put in much more time in amongst work.

On slightly nicer news - I have been accepted into the NUJ and got my application to have a press card.
So if I get that I might just have to stick two fingers up at shorthand..... (but of course I am that bliddy-minded I will stick at it and do it, as I walked away from a well paid, but ultimately stressful bullying career to change my life... what kind of person would I be if I didn't see it through to closure).

PS: Edited to add - I FINALLLLLLY managed to track down the blue Team GB tennis shirts on ebay as they were sold out everywhere really early on during the Olympics (and I am kicking myself for not having bought one at Wimbledon when I was there for the Olympic tennis)...

PPS - just picked this up from the framers:
