I've moved all posts relating to this topic into Dan's thread since he seems to be the 'protanogist'.
It might all get moved to Doubles World since it's about the doubles players in general.
We'll see ...

I really like Dan, but my golly can he be a pillock at times...........
I think for me this is the final straw. When you get to a certain level and you put on a GB shirt, it ceases to remain solely about yourself. I paid for tickets; I shouted. He took substances which meant he could no longer play for himself or his country. He betrayed the trust of everyone involved from the DC team to the fans.
He is talented and fun to watch and joking apart, to have Roger the GOAT say "it's like looking in the mirror" or whatever - well that is top praise. However I would rather have a lower ranked player who behaves and does the best he/she can than someone with more talent who continually makes mistakes. Maybe if he ever manages to scramble up to a noticeable ranking, I'll take him half-seriously.

He's covering pretty much all bases, annoying Jamie and by extension the rest of his DC team mates, all the doubles players on the tour, Louis Cayer, the LTA. etc He's wrong to say the doubles players are only playing cos they didn't show enough commitment at singles. Dan isn't a good example of commitment after his past misdemeanours. Is Dan our version of Tomic (all mouth no talent) or Kyrgios (talent, but no brain) ?
I'm not going to completely defend or jump on Dans side but......
This is what he reportedly said.
"We are the only country in the world to have a doubles coach travelling round paid for by the federation at the Grand Slams. They also receive medical and sports science help, so saying they aren't appreciated simply isn't correct."
Which to my mind is him saying that the statement made by Jamie Murray on Friday that doubles success deserved more credit from British tennis. Doesn't ring true.
He may have been a bit blunt on the dbls players being unable to make it in the singles game but lets face it he's only speaking the truth.
Let's face it we're all hoping Andy can play again after any surgery "even if it's only doubles"
I also believe that Jamie made it personal and that was wrong, Dan never had a pop at Jamie he just pointed
out that in his opinion GB does more to support it's doubles players than other countries/teams.
And if it's true he's correct.
Not withstanding he didn't do it in the most diplomatic way but I don't think it was a personal thing at Jamie
other than it being a retort to Jamies earlier comment, and let's face it Dan's no diplomat.
No, if earlier I had to accept that Dan is Dan and he was never going to show the powers that be how sorry he was for his silly actions that got him the ban, and not coming out of the traps running just because he didn't have access during the ban to top tennis facilities when he imo as I've said before could'ave been already physically fit if not match fit and used his ban time better.
Well that's just not Dan so he is going to be a bit Tomic/Nick but if you read it again as I did maybe he has a point?
And both need to engage brain fully before commenting.
AKA Andy.
:getcoat:
To me the point is that, even if there is some substance in what he is saying, there was no need for him to say it ...... and then to compound it by speaking about commitment - words fail me! He obviously has talent but he certainly doesn't have a brain. I want to like Dan - partly because I lived in Solihull for many years - but he does make it very difficult. What a prize prat!!
To be fair, I remember a few years ago John McEnroe said much the same thing - he said that doubles players only played doubles because they weren't good enough to play singles. And I recall reading in someone's memoir (but sadly I can't remember who) of doubles players who chose to play doubles only as they could have a more relaxed fun time on the circuit than singles players - although I think that was many years ago, not now.

Oh! Dan!! :facepalm::doh:
Do we know the context of Dan's comments?
I would'ave thought he was asked for his opinion as it seems an unusual thing to just out of the blue come out with.
I've searched but nothing out there tbf we'd have to see some video of what lead up to it.
But if it's a case of him giving his honest opinion after being asked for it then his knowledge of the situation and honesty has to be commended. Doesn't it?
Could'ave executed it better I agree but then so could Jamie and nobody is on his back for being so personal.
He said “It is lazy comments to make. It is ill-informed and dumb really.
Well he knew about the GB coach being the only one fully paid plus all the other stuff so he was better informed than most! Including me. Actually make that especially me.
I'm sorry but I feel Jamie went off piste and personal instead of keeping to the facts.
Neither has come out of this with much credit.
My worries are that unless someone pours oil on the stormy waters it could get very personal like Leyton etc.
And we don't want that, The press might, but not me.

I just checked and Dan is currently the GB no. 4 ranked player but should pass James Ward after the AO results are added, so he will be number 3.
So... you would imagine both he and Jamie could well be called up for the next Davis Cup tie.
I hope Leon can clear the air because both have roles to play in the future. Leon was very positive about Dan's selection in the last tie.
And nobody needs reminding how important the doubles have been to our Davis Cup success in recent years - Andy has always emphasized the team nature of the Davis Cup Team and
So I hope Leon can get them into the same room soon and sort it out for the sake of our Davis Cup team.

I have been thinking exactly the same thing Pete. Was Dan misquoted or were his remarks taken out of context? It's easy to jump to conclusions or to speculate so I am reluctant to say any more yet due to not being in possession of the full facts.
With regard to the press, I hope they are not milking this in order to make a good story?
All I want is for it to go away. I'm very fond of both Jamie and Dan and it does neither any good.
Jamie has had huge success in doubles - I think he's earned the right to speak about it. Dan has very little to write home about as yet, either in singles or doubles, apart from his contribution to Davis Cup. To say: 'So we are celebrating people who didn't make it at singles and people who didn't have the attitude to work hard enough to make it in the singles game? ' Is absolutely crass in my view. He then goes on to say: 'I like the doubles guys and they've done well but to think we should celebrate this so the kids growing up look up to this as a huge achievement is completely wrong.' What a patronising idiot!! :grrr: I love watching the doubles - particularly at Majors. Often they are far more exciting matches than the singles - particularly in the early stages of the tournament. I wish they would televise them more often!

I don't get what all the fuss is about. I entirely disagree with Dan's sentiments but all he has done is express his (dopey!) opinion. Since when was expressing a disagreeable opinion such a crime? Jamie knows how hard he works and has a great career to show for it, that's all that matters. As someone who went deep into research, I've faced similar comments (ie couldn't you make it in industry) - yes, it's irritating as **** - but at the end of the day people are entitled to an opinion. Even numbskull ones. Dan's been tactless and Jamie's over-reacted. Six of one, half a dozen of the other - Leon needs to knock both their heads together, imo.

My train of thought was Jamie was proud x amount of GB doubles teams got through in AO, was praising Louis Cayer but was having a dig at the LTA & nothing more!
I agree - that's exactly what I thought.

You're right, of course, RB. At the end of the day Dan's comments don't matter one jot - after all, the only person he has hurt is himself. It's his past history that makes them so unpalatable.
Of course the journalists are milking it! Just like the supposed feud between Kate and Meghan - they'll exaggerate anything if it makes a 'good story'.

Even if that's how you feel Jamie, airing your personals in public is a no no.

Looks to me both wouldn't major in diplomacy.

Sorry wasn't going to stick my tuppence in but have to say I don't understand how Jamie is getting any blame in this. He is sticking up for all doubles players, including himself. Surely Dan made it personal by saying 'Jamie'?

"‘But just to kind of lazily trash the doubles game, for me it annoys me a lot." By Jamie's own admission, Dan's comments were directed at doubles, not at an individual. In essence, what Dan has said is that doubles is an inferior game to singles. It's certainly not a view I share, (dubs is my fave DC day!) but Dan is entitled to an opinion and it is very widely shared opinion at that, hence my bafflement at the controversy and Jamie's reaction.

Don't see this at all. To me Jamie was explaining why he was annoyed but Dan had already made it personal by saying:
'‘Jamie thinks we should be celebrating six pairs inside the main draw of a grand slam. So we are celebrating people who didn’t make it at singles and people who didn’t have the attitude to work hard enough to make it in the singles game?’
Anyway we don't all have to agree on this :) I think there will be many differing views.

I posted this on Twitter. I'm quite cross at Dan really, he is hardly a shining example himself, to trash talk a variation of his sport which GB are doing well in is stupid in my opinion.
"Have gone right off Dan Evans after his stupid, ill-judged & faintly ridiculous comments about Doubles Tennis - Jamie contributed more to his Davis Cup winners medal than he did!"

Good win for Dan in Quimper - 6-3, 6-0 - well done.
No problem for Dan today. It's such a shame that there are so few spectators at Challenger matches, especially after the buzz of the AO. Next match up more challenging for Dan; Quentin Halys.
Sadly that's the reality of being on the tour. Most of it is pretty uninspriing, even at the highest levels.

At the present time my support for Dan personally has waned somewhat after his recent comments, though imagine can still enjoy watching him play at times. The inference that those concentrating on doubles were not hard workers crass and misplaced,of coruse that has been laid at Evan's door at times. I do accept there are quite a few who do not appreciate doubles to the same extent and ideally we want top players in singles and doubles, singles will always get more attention.

Dan wins in the third set tie-break - well done:cheer::cheer::cheer:
Dan has just beaten Halys in three sets. Made it tough for himself. He was a break up in the 3rd set and serving at 40-0 up, but managed to lose that game, but eventually he won on the TB. He plays either Guinard or Lestienne #9 seed, next. Never heard of either of them!

Perhaps we can get back to talking about Dan's tennis. Not that I disagree with the discussions about his comments, but I'm sure we'd all sooner be talking about Dan's on court efforts ! Not on court until 630pm.
Dan's match will be getting underway very shortly. It was scheduled for not before 5.30pm GMT.
Dan has lost the first set 6-3
Come on!!
Things not going too well for Dan right now. After receiving a time violation warning he lost his serve. At the change over he let the ump know in no uncertain terms how he felt shouting, "Tell me beforehand" at him. In the next game Dan received a racquet abuse warning causing him to lose the point and the game. Come on Dan. Get it together. Too many second serves which Lestienne is pouncing on.
Yay!!!! Dan breaks back. 5-5.
Second set to Dan in the tb:cheer::cheer:
And Dan takes the second set on the TB! The little outburst probably helped get the gremlins out if his system.

If there are Special Exempt (SE) spaces that's what they're for i.e. Dan would get one because he's made it to the final stage of this week's Challenger. Going to check though as the ATP rules change rather too often for my ageing brain to keep up and there might only be SE spots in main 250/500 events.
Sallydaisy
01-02-2019, 23:12
Hmm, no SE spaces in Montpelier. Bit late tonight to tackle the ATP rule book! In theory Dan should be there to play Qualifying rounds but there's no draw yet nor any schedule so je ne sais rotsquit.
Really enjoyed watching Dan's matches this week - though some have been a bit :nailbiter:
Good luck for later Dan - at least it shouldn't be another late night!

He did go on to say in another tweet, "...To be clear this isn't criticism of @ATP_Tour who invest heavily into Challenger tournaments..."
I was taken aback when I read this. To think that Dan played his heart out all week...for what? Ranking points maybe, or perhaps valuable match practice, but it doesn't seem right to make a "significant loss" as Liam says. Can't be a great deal of incentive there?
This will be the fourth Frenchman this week who Dan faces today! Probably means there will be a decent crowd watching, albeit they will be cheering for Humbert. I think Dan thrives in that. His feisty nature saying I will show 'em! At the start of his match last night, there were very few onlookers but by the end a small crowd had gathered. Some of them were a bit boisterous and had to be spoken to frequently by the umpire.

Just the one Frenchman left to beat in the final now!
Dan really sharp today. Serving stats good, esp 2nd serve which was very vulnerable yesterday. I was worried he might have been tired after yesterday cos he had to work really hard against Safiullin, but of the 2, I think Humbert was the more tired today. Humbert had a long match yesterday too, 2hrs 33mins. So another Frenchman awaits in the final, Barrere. Go show 'em Dan!

1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 (break), 4-1 (hold).

Hold, hold and Barrere now 5-2 up with Dan serving to stay in the match. He hasn't given up but I think the Frenchman has had a confidence implant since winning the 2nd set + he has the crowd behind him. That has been known to fire Evo up but he might be feeling the effects of those earlier round long matches.
Dan held for 3-5.

Still he did make it to the final :)

So, Dan gets the next 2 weeks off.
He'd have been in Montpelier ATP250 Qualies if he'd not done so well this week (I think he'd take doing well this week!) and then he's headed to Qualifying for Delray Beach. Fingers crossed!!!
Also, he should be closing in on the top 150 his exploits in Quimper.

You can make Bet365 full-screen by using control and + . I do this and then connect to the tv by means of an HDMI cable - much easier on the old eyes!!

Looking up to see what Brits are playing in Delray Beach next week, I saw Dan Evans is in qualifying today. Couldn't believe it when I saw Tim Henman is playing Jan Michael Gambill on the Champions Tour. Takes me back about 20 years!
Dan has won his QR1 match in Delray Beach. Donald Young awaits in the next round.
I didn't see Dan's match, only followed it on livescore and he seemed to start pretty poorly but eventually found some first serves and a way to read his opponent's serve by the 2nd set. However holding onto breaks was difficult for him. Glad he found a way through. Young is pretty unpredicatable but fingers crossed that Dan can make it into the main draw.
I watched Dans match on bet365 and he seemed pretty calm. Much more level than he can be and he also varied his game well -serve and volley, up to net etc. He does have such a nice game, not just huge hitting so I hope that he can get his ranking back up. Young could be tricky though:nailbiter:
Unusually, I couldn't find a stream. I followed livescore after the first set. Lets hope he can get into the main draw.
Dan's match has just started. He broke Young's serve in the first game but there's a long way to go!
Does anyone have a stream for this?
Dan wins the first set 6 - 2 - good stuff

Well done Dan. That’s a good win.
Great match, well done Dan :cheer::cheer:
Nice one Dan. We watched on sky sports as I have an account. On the tv with a little help from HDMI lead and Magnifier app on PC
Came out pretty good.
Oh Tiafo next.
Would be awesome to beat the Defending champ.
C'mon Dan you can do it.

Really good win. Hoping he can do well in the tournament proper. Haven't got tennis tv at the minute so can't watch.

I have been doing that for seven years!! The money eventually runs out, but it takes about a year before you need to top-up. A bargain, in my opinion.
Dan lost the first set 3 - 6, but leads 3 - 2 in the second - Tiafoe serving
tb time - go Dan:thumbup::thumbup:

Dan WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He fought back from 0-3 down in the 3rd set to beat last year's champion and third seed Frances Tiafoe 3-6 7-6(1) 7-5 in Delray Beach.
:superman:
Yay!!! Actually got to watch it on TV, probably because he was playing an American. Well done to him. :)
Great news to wake up to! I watched it until half way through the second set and then sleep called! He seems to be so much calmer these days and didn’t worry that he was 5-0 down in the first set. He just worked out what he needed to do (a lesson learned from our Andy!) and kept trying. Brilliant result :yahoo:
Brilliant result for Dan - very well done :cheer: :cheer:   :bravo: :bravo:
Very entertaining match! After a slow start, Dan sparkled in the second set until 5-5 when Tiafoe broke, whereupon Dan broke straight back and then stormed through the TB winning it 7-1. A note of despondency crept in here when Tiafoe led 3-0 in the final set. But...guess what! This is the point when I lost my battle with the sleep and missed the rest. How could I! Was overjoyed when I saw the result later. What a plucky warrior is our Dan. If he was asked about this great win, I can just imagine him saying with a cheeky little grin on his face, "It's alright, isn't it." Yes Dan, it most certainly is alright! Bravo you brave little Brummie.:clap:Next up is Lloyd Harris, a WC from RSA. GO Dan.
Excellent news to wake up to. I was too tired to even follow the live scores, and I really thought he would lose.
Well done Mr Evans.
Fantastic win for Evo. He really is doing so well at this comeback and really sticking at it. Bravo :clap::clap:

Dan wins the match - 6 - 0, 6 - 2 - fantastic - very well done.:cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer:

Wonder which filling Dan's having in his bagel for breakfast tomorrow?

Sorry, I only know about Tennis TV and bet365 - it is on both of those.
5:1, he is not messing about. This has the feel of certain Murray matches, when you got the feeling he had better things to do to hang around on a court that day......!!!
Seppi pulled things back and Dan now leads 5 - 4 and will serve for the set

87, or 88 depending on what Tomas Berdych does in Acapulco.
is that if he wins or loses
Dan is currently at 546 points in the live rankings. That’s 105
If he wins today he goes up to 646 points, which would take him above Berdych, even temporarily.
Tomas Berdych currently has 640 points, and is ranked 87. He is playing against Bedene in Dubai, (not Acapulco- Sorry). If he wins he gets another 45 points, which will take him up to 685, and out of reach at the current time.
A few others are playing, but shouldn’t really impact on Dan.
