Great match, there is a very positive feeling in British Tennis at the moment. I hope they can build on all this.

Saw Dan go up 2-1 - most impressive- and then to hear that he had match point - bet he feels he should have won that.
However what a great performance- to take Stan to match point he did - just shows what this boy could and can do.
Hope when the dust settles he can be proud and build on it.

I give you an example in Paolo Lorenzi aged 34.

Late bloomer Lorenzi reached a career high #39 earlier this year, current rank 40.
Gave the World #2 a run for his money yesterday in R3 of the USO.
Until now has won only 1 ATP title - this year in Kitzbuhel - and for 13 years has slogged away on the Challenger circuit and lower echelons of the ATP tour winning 18 Challenger Titles (2 this year) and 4 Futures.

SuperDan - still only 26 - has worked his way up about 280 places in 12 months on the ATP tour by, a little belatedly, working hard. Took the World #3 to 5 hard won sets yesterday to bring up a potential career high around #52/4 after the US Open. Has won 5 Challenger Titles of which 3 this year and 13 Futures titles.

If Dan can continue to work hard and build on the success of this year he could stay in the top 50 at least for a few years and do a lot better than Lorenzi - who is about to become the Italian #1 player!!!

Just saying.

Well done to Dan. Did not expect that.

But if he had taken his tennis career more seriously sooner, he would have had the fitness and experience to be truly competitive in the 5th set. So shame in a way, but people are different.
Yes, thanks Sally. I too will add that IMHO Dan's a late developer. It seems to happen to boys/men more than girls/women. At least he has the innate talent and if all that's missing are the hard yards, then if he makes up his mind to put them in, fitness is much more achievable than ability.

Thinking of late developers, Tim Henman didn't start doing well until 23 years old, only a couple of years younger than Dan.

Forgot to include in my previous post how impressed I was with Dan's volleying at the net. He was very quick and not afraid to come in. Maybe an added benefit from him playing doubles too. A shame he and Nick had to retire from their match.
Dan is a late bloomer and has really started to put the work in. I think he has benefiitted from the Dävis Cup team setup, the team spirit Leon häs fostered and the chänce to work closely ẃith Andy seems to have triggered him seeing how good he can be if he knuckles down. Great to see Léon, Louis Cayer and a few others from the backroom team there last night to cheer him on. Still time for Dan to have some fun though, he tweeted a pic of himself out on the town last night :red devil:

I think it is great for Dan and hope he continues to do well, but he may be left feeling he could have achieved more if he had only worked harder sooner.

Interestingly reading about Henman on Wiki, as he was mentioned. He was not considered a future star as a junior, but worked very hard. Apparently he then grew 6 inches from July 1992 to July 1993, to six feet one. Don't suppose that is an option for Dan!

He was in a Wimbledon quarter final in 1994 aged 21 (22 later that year) having beaten reigning French Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the first round.

So later developer than Andy but not so late really.

Such a close match. So sad for Dan.
His interview was very straightforward - and he was understandably very down, but I hope on reflection he will be very proud.
Hopefully he will push on from here and continue to show the world his lovely style of tennis. I could watch him all day!

Dan played brilliantly last night - such a pity he lost but I am glad he was able to show that the win over Zverev was not just a one-off!

Leon has a really difficult choice to make for Glasgow. On clay I would say Kyle over Dan but on hard court almost impossible to choose which of them should play.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Dan's match with Stan last night. It was fantastic entertainment and had me hooked right to the last point. Such a shame the match point he had came and went, but at least he took it all the way and left everything on the court. Just a shame he went a bit awol in the final set before eventually trying to bring it back. It was a superb performance from Dan and he should be very proud of himself.

It is such a fantastic time as a fan to have all these British players to support.

Josephine

Possible.

Doesn't give the option to rest Andy if he say has a really long match, or is feeling not great. Dan or Kyle would have to step in with Jamie and that wouldn't be ideal. Leon has to chose best way to maximise points, not give everyone a chance, so I suppose choice will be based on surface, opponents, how well Edmund does tonight etc.

Still, you never know!

Of course it really hurts for Dan, to have got to match point and to have had other chances in the tiebreak against the #3 and twice slam winner, in a slam, when you have never beaten anyone in the top 10, is really heartbreaking, also the kudos, money and ranking points lost, as well! But it is a sign of how far Dan has come to get so close,Stan played a poor first set but after that was not easy to beat.

Many suggestions to Dan on twitter to that effect like his clothing sponsor is Nike and there are several Nike stores in Paris and he uses a Wilson racquet (which I very much doubt is bespoke) so could he not have borrowed one or two and had it strung to his requirements. Probably is unfair as we don't know what information he was getting from the airline as to the whereabouts of his bag and when he would get it.

Where there's a will....... Frank Dancevic at Nottingham in 2014.

The saga began when his luggage never arrived in Nottingham, England where Dancevic is entered in the qualifying for the last grass-court warmup tournament before Wimbledon. The staff went on strike at the Brussels airport where he made a connection; the airline told him it would take a minimum of five days to get his bags. He had to play Ante Pavic, a big-serving Croatian, in the first round on Saturday. Unfortunately, Dancevic had no shoes – never mind grass-court shoes – no racquets, no clothes. Nothing. So instead of at least getting in a little practice on grass, a surface he hasn’t played on since losing in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying last year, he had to scramble for the basic necessities. No problem; this is Dancevic we’re talking about.

First things first: the Canadian went out and bought two racquets Saturday morning, and they didn’t come cheaply: 150 British pounds apiece (about $555 Canadian). Strings? Dancevic usually uses Luxilon M2 strings; he had to settle for the Alu Power version. Then he went to a sports store – your regular, normal sports store. A shirt, shorts, socks. But when he was about to go on court for his match Dancevic realized … the shorts didn’t have any pockets. No problem; this is Dancevic we’re talking about. Dancevic borrowed a pair of shorts from Russian player Teymuraz Gabashvili. Shoes were a a rather more thorny problem, since you can’t get running shoes with the special grass-court soles just any old place. No problem; this is Dancevic we’re talking about. He borrowed a pair of grass-court shoes from his friend, the Tunisian player Malek Jaziri, who clearly had never taken a close look at Dancevic’s feet before he extended his kindness. The tennis bag? Still somewhere in Brussels. No problem: Dancevic walked on with a little Head backpack, just like a 9-year-old kid going to his weekly Saturday lesson.

To sum up: Dancevic didn’t hit a single ball on the grass before going out to play Pavic. He was armed two brand-new racquets with unfamiliar strings, someone else’s shorts, borrowed shoes and a shirt from the local shop. A veritable buffet of mismatched branding. “There were lots of people in the crowd. And my opponent was definitely confused,” Dancevic laughed as he recounted the saga for Eh Game. Bottom line? Dancevic played well, fired 15 aces, faced just two break points, failed to convert some break points of his own (and said some bad calls didn’t help), should have closed out Pavic in two, but ended up winning 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3. “All good. I got some more practice with new equipment,” Dancevic said. “Hopefully the airline will reimburse me.” On the plus side, he earned 1,630 Euros for winning his first-round qualifying match, and would bump that up to more than 3,600 Euros if he can make the main draw.

Dan is representing GB (With Heather) at the Hopman Cup, 1st-7th Jan, other teams in Group A are French, German and Swiss so he is down to Face Roger (mon 2nd) Richard (wed 4th) and Alexander (fri 6th)

Dan is then down as a Qualifier for Sydney and will be seeded in qualification

roytennisfan
23-12-2016, 13:24
Dan will also be playing Doubles with Nick again in Melbourne (just confirmed by Nick on twitter), certainly worth the admittance money or an early morning to watch them!

roytennisfan
06-01-2017, 09:58
Dan had a really poor Hopman Cup losing all 3 in straight sets not getting more than 4 games in any set. The good news for Dan is he's into the main draw at Auckland with the withdrawal of Robredo as an alternate, so he's pulled out of Sydney qualification

JAMES4578

Certainly hoped for a bit more resistance from Dan,can hopefully make progress in Auckland.

roytennisfan
07-01-2017, 08:25
With a number of late withdrawals Dan got the final main draw alternative slot for Sydney as well and opted for that. Then he drew a qualifier in the draw

Pleased to see Dan fared better than Kyle, making it through to round 2. I still think Kyle is the better player these days however - he is the future. Great though Dan is when "on" he is older and still doesn't have the desire (except in DC) that is needed to really progress much further at this stage in his career. However, I'd love to be proved wrong...

Great win Dan, Thiem went downhill after Dan played 2 great games at the beginning of set2

I wonder how much of Thiem going downhill was related to being on court for nearly 3 hours yesterday evening.

roytennisfan
12-01-2017, 09:51
The 45 points for that win takes Dan up to 55, just short of his CH of 53, A win against Kuznetsov (live #45) tomorrow would give Dan a NCH

roytennisfan
12-01-2017, 09:56
I wonder how much of Thiem going downhill was related to being on court for nearly 3 hours yesterday evening.

Seemed more Psychological, at least in the second set for sure, Dan played 2 really aggressive games hitting volleys and overhead winners and Thiem was out of his stride after playing very well in the first set, gifted a second service break for 3-0 and though he clawed back was a shadow of his first set performance and unsure how to play as the ue's mounted

12-01-2017, 13:47
I think that's Dan's first top 10 win! And perhaps in his second ATP tour semi final too?

Third set Thiem's game pretty much collapsed. Couldn't hit the back of a bus, as they say.

Key point probably Dan serving out the second set at 5-4. Thiem had break point in that game. Had Thiem taken that, who knows how the match would have panned out? The fact that Dan fought off break point and served out the second set probably helped swung the match his way. I think he was 4-0 up in the third set before Thiem even got on the board.

Psychologically a big boost for Dan, irrespective of how Thiem played later in the match. What a fine start to the season for him.

I'd add this is also further reward for him upping his work ethic on the tour to improve his game - no doubt inspired by Andy's success plus team GB DC impact.
