Niculescu wins 6-1, 6-2 in 64 minutes. I don't think I've ever seen Jo play so badly. That's five first round losses in a row since Wimbledon. Her confidence must be at an all time low.

Jo stuck in a rut at the moment, unlike the loss to Barty was never in the match. Should've been some consolation that Ashleigh had great run in Wuhan, though lost in 3 to Garcia in final.
According to Russell Fuller, on the BBC website, only Sloane Stephens, Coco Vandeweghe and Caroline Garcia can overtake her in the race to Singapore rankings. But, they would have to win the title.
Jo withdraws from Hong Kong.

Garcia is asking for a WC in Moscow
I'm reading that Jo would have to reach the Final in Moscow to keep her spot in the WTA Finals.
If Garcia DOES go to Moscow there could be an almighty fight for that place.
Perhaps it would be a blessing if she didn't.
It looks as though Jo will just miss out again - as she did last year. Still, as you say Hawkeye, it may be a blessing in disguise. Jo just doesn't seem to be able to break her losing run at the moment.

possible new coach on the horizon http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/42081121
Highly regarded coach Michael Joyce has officially announced he has terminated his working relationship with former world no.1 Victoria Azarenka and is expected to announce a link-up with Britain's Johanna Konta in the next few days. :)
Jo has become the first active WTA Tour player to be named as Player of the Year at the prestigious Brtain’s Lawn Tennis Writers Association (LTWA) since Elena Baltacha in 2010 after enjoying a terrific 2017. Konta won the biggest title of her professional life at the Miami Open, while also reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon for the first time, and peaked at a career-high world No. 4. :bravo:

I watched the second set and listened to a live stream in bed for the third. Ridiculously high quality match for a first round first match of the year! Good omens as Keys is a formidable opponent when "on" and Jo seemed to be tougher on the main points in the second and third! Her new coach seemed to approve as well!

Yes and important because the Keys type match is a tough match and nobody wins all of those but then when you play somebody ranked way below you it is about consistency and winning tournaments or going very deep in them is due to that of course so very encouraging.

Oh dear... from the WTA thread...
"No.3 seed Elina Svitolina recovered from a set down to outlast British No.1 Johanna Konta, who was forced to retire in the middle of the deciding set at the Brisbane International.
BRISBANE, Australia - Ukrainian superstar Elina Svitolina surged back from a set down to defeat Johanna Konta, 1-6, 7-6(6), 3-2, ret. and reach the semifinals of the Brisbane International."
I did not see it but hope Jo is OK. So close to the victory if you look at the TB result in the second set. Hope she is OK for the AO.
(Edit: And of course Svitolina is ranked 6 so this sounds like Jo was doing well until she had the problem).
Oh dear - what a pity. I hope it's nothing serious.
Johanna had had an MTB earlier for her hip. Fingers crossed that her retirement was only precautionary.
Fingers crossed for Jo. I heard it was the same problem as Andy's.
Poor Jo - get well soon please!

A great start - well done, Jo!!:dance::dance:
Well not to be for Johanna, she was beaten by the Lucky Loser Bernarda Pera 4-6, 5-7!!
Oh dear - what happened to Jo? She just lost to the world number 123. I was following on live score so I don't know whether Jo played badly or the other girl played out of her skin. So disappointing - I hoped she would go deep here.
Have to say Alis the other girl did play extremely well & Jo just couldn't handle it, mind there was some great gusts of wind happening all the time which didn't help, and that commentator was very down on Johanna (can't remember his name......Bardot will know!!;)) He just couldn't unersertand how Jo was loosing, but these thing happen to players grrr! Shame for Johanna, but she has a very good coach so they will probably talk it through!
Night folks!!
Josephine
18-01-2018, 02:36
Pera returned amazingly. I thought the commentator made some good points about Jo's game. Not much variety - just hit as hard as you can. Not much slice or spin - just kept giving Pera the pace she wanted and missed countless returns long - volleys poor and overheads terrible. But much of women's tennis seems to involve just hitting the ball harder than your opponent and certainly Pera did that!
I was disappointed to hear of Jo's loss, she's a much better player than what happened.
JAMES4578
18-01-2018, 10:15
Certainly very disappointing and didn't expect such an early exit. Pera may have performed well and tough conditions but still think Jo should've found the answers, think she will need to revaluate with her coach.
RosieBear
18-01-2018, 11:54
Another one where Jo's lost if she can't power her way through. Baffles me, she's so bright and articulate off court, how can she lack so much imagination on court
I think when up against a strong opponent, the temptation is to stick to your fall back game rather than try anything you don't feel so sure of.
Josephine
18-01-2018, 13:48
I think that's where you miss players like Andy - working out an opponent and changing tactics. Jo just didn't seem able to think past hit it very hard.
Maybe just a bit of an off day but shame in a way her game has not got more variety - maybe new coach will help with that.
JAMES4578
18-01-2018, 14:19
Whilst valid points think Jo needs to try out varied tactics , you need a plan B in certain situations even if initially may not be 2nd nature. Know she had some great success with her usual game, but not been working out so well lately.
Hopefully she and her coach can have a rethink. There's always another tournie.
I agree he did have valid points, it was the manner in which he says them that I didn't like, so my fault for not being clearer on that Josephine!
Even though Jo's game may be lacking in variety, that what she can do wasn't even executed very well. Her serving wasn't as accurate as it can be and many shots missed the target. There were some bizarre smashes, which Jo Durie put down to her looking into the sun, and there were some fierce gusts of wind which affected both players. I wondered if the heat was affecting her...she did look rather 'hot and bothered'. Although Pera has a good solid game, I do think Jo on a better day could have beaten her. I really thought when Jo levelled to 5 all in the second set (having been broken early in the set), Jo could go then on and win it. But no, instead she immediately lost her serve and consequently the match. Sad and disappointing for her.
david1610
19-01-2018, 03:59
While Jo was not 100% when I was watching I was amazed by the quality of her opponent's returning and got more and more worried as she kept up a level of play way above her ranking.
I would say her opponent won rather than Jo lost, if you see what I mean. Not disagreeing with other comments, but on the day her opponent was inspired so.. yes, improve but it was one of those days you meet an opponent playing at a different level to their (presumably) usual level.

Yeah that really was disappointing. For two sets she was by far the better player and somehow didn't get the job done. One of the reasons is her woeful volleying and positional play when coming to the net. Her ground strokes all but win her the points but far too often she didn't finish it with weak volleying. The tiebreak clearly broke her as she then threw in loads of Unforced Errors in the final set. Credit to Kasatkina for hanging in there when she seemed beaten, and she has a nice game to watch.
But this is one that got away.
Feel sorry for Mellis and Muguruza who had to follow them on court after Midnight, the Spaniard expected to play again at 7pm Dubai time today.

completely agree with this about JK. She's not a natural mover on court, but has a very solid technique with her groundshots. I don't understand why she wants to rush the net when she's not such a natural volleyer, most players only come to the net for coin toss and handshake. I would accept that it's a good idea to throw a different look and she could get some cheap points by a surprise net rush, but Jo's going to have to pick her moments better improve her low volleying.

No improvement by Johanna today but not the highest seed to crash out

Jo dishing it to the press for a change ...
Absolutely fantastic, sock it to them Jo :clap::clap: She, like Andy, is a very polite and reasonable person, but everyone has their limits and the press just push and push. I hope Andy unleashes in similar fashion to the press who have been on his back (and his family's) during his break with injury.
Well said Jo. She isn't the only top player to crash out today.
Hope she will now head home and prepare for another successful season on the green, green grass of home. :)
She's 0-4 at RG though. Came across to me like deflection tactics.

Painful to watch. Didn't wait for interview but having a go at the press is not the best thing. Thick skin is needed in this game. Obviously not her surface but she lost the match. Would have been better to keep a dignified silence however much she was annoyed.

I hope he doesnt and is his usual dignified self. The press is what it is, doing a job and some journalists have been sympathetic even when trying to guess what's going on. Lack of information is frustrating for all, press and fans. We have a free press and when people try to muzzle it as has been tried in this country then we are on a slippery slope.

That is what Andy did in Australia Open in 2006 when he lost first round. At that point he lashed out and blamed the press but he was only 18 and he realised in time that it didn't help his cause to do that. And over time many of the tennis journalists became more like friends and supporters. OK he maybe didn't know what he was doing, but these were the people he was waving his fists in triumph at after winning Wimbledon 2013 - and the journalists did the same back according to Neil Harman.
Andy has had a fairly good press in recent years from tennis journalists, though I will never forgive the other journalists who tore him to shreds after the ABE comment as they basically invented a myth about him and filled it with lies. Talk about fake news that people believed for years! I believe one truly nasty specimen was Tony Parsons. I also remember reading a horrible article by Simon Hattenstone in the Guardian. But that was many years ago and Andy proved them all wrong.
As for Andy's current situation, Andy knows the score by now even though I'm sure it annoys him sometimes. The information on more recent slowdown in his recovery came from inside his camp - therefore was probably authorised by Andy himself or his PR person who would be advising Andy how to deal with the press.
Also re Jo - tennis journalists have a job - what are they meant to say? She has a terrible record at RG and from what I saw was playing wildly and commies said her opponent didn't even need to play well to win! all tennis players have to learn to rise above pressure of all sorts, as Andy most memorably did.
And a sports journalist who performed poorly would be sacked and told to leave same day in many cases! They have to prove themselves too.

Nobody is suggesting muzzling the press. But when the press, who don't really know any detail about Andy's injury, write articles* stating that Andy himself is to blame for it, then personally I'd love to see this type put in their place and Andy would be well within his rights to do so - we do have a free press, but as proper extension equally we have the right of reply.
*I can only find an article with a tour pro blaming Andy, but there was a lengthy piece in The Times fully agreeing with and elaborating on the sentiment, and I'll post that too if I can find it:

Well that is an article with a player giving his opinion - (I can't read it as not registered). Which is free speech. And someone else can disagree which is also free speech. And a free press.
It could be argued that Andy's very physical style of play contributed to this injury. I wouldn't make that argument but some might. I certainly wish he had developed his forehand sooner (only really developed full force once Lendl came on board). He could certainly have beaten Nadal in their epic encounter at the O2 in the semi-final in 2010 if he had had a stronger forehand then.

I know people aren't muzzling the press on here or in the tennis world but my remark was aimed at those who try to stop journalists doing their job and take offence at negative reports, even when justified. We all know the culprits but for JoKo to have a go because of her first round loss was ill advised.I'm well aware of how Andy has suffered at the hands of the press and how he and his team have dealt with it. I have felt angry enough in the past to e-mail certain journalists who have written spiteful columns about him. My point is that it's their job to comment on players' performances and as far as I can see this is what Konta was angry about. I didn't mention Andy and just said no information is frustrating. I'm entitled to my opinion re Konta so don't need links regarding Andy.

Sorry, took the he/his in your opening sentence to mean Andy not Jo, so read and replied in that context. But yes, this is Jo's thread so should be about her.
ps, Josephine, just seen you can't access article, not about Andy's play rather claims mismanagement of injury. Includes statements such as ‘if only he spent a little more time doing the right kind of mobility and corrective exercises, it could’ve all been avoided’. Anyway, back to Jo.

Johanna into quarters of Nottingham, pity at expense of Heather but was marginally favouring her in this one. Windy conditions but overall fairly impressive in circumstances of tricky encounter for both. Took first set 6-4 and 2nd on breaker (having been down break earlier in the set).
Jo wins the second set 6 - 3, after dropping the first set. It's 1 - 1 in the third set.
Jo loses the final to Ashleigh Barty 3 - 6, 6 - 3, 4 - 6.
Jo loses the first set to Kvitova 3 - 6.
Jo winning 2 - 1 in the second set.
Kvitova saves two break points to make it 4 - 4.
Kvitova breaks Jo's serve.
Hmm unsurprising I guess.
Just cannot warm to Johanna at all I'm afraid. Did anyone see her rant at the umpire in the Nottingham final? She was so rude, I couldn't believe it when I watched it back (wasn't watching live but heard about it). Then she just threw the match away and apparently held up the presentation by stropping off court.

Same. Find her pretty dry - she reminds me of Princess Anne:rolling:. As a British player I wish her well but for watchability and likability give me Aga, Halep and Vekic over Jo any day.
Jo to serve first against Krunic.
Three break points for Jo.
Second break point for Krunic.
Jo saves it on her knees, while Krunic does the splits at the net.
Jo wins the first set 6 - 1.
Krunic having a medical timeout.

Certainly good start from Johanna, though Krunic appears to be struggling physically. In tough section of draw as she will face Wozniacki if she comes through though, hopefully in a more relaxed frame of mind this week.
Break point for Jo at the beginning of the second set.
Three break points for Jo.
She breaks Krunic's serve.
