Well my Fed Cup experience made me warm to Jo a bit more eventually after her battling win on the Sunday but I must confess I started the day wanting to cheer for her opponent :shamed:

It’s understandable. I have to confess I feel much the same when I see Kyle competing. I just don’t warm to him.

Jo was a break down early on vs Hsieh, but has fought back and they're into a first set TB.

Eek that went pear-shaped - TB lost 7-1

Jan

In the second set Jo broke and served for the set, only to get broken back to love.
5-4*
But, hooray, she then broke and took the set on her 3rd SP

Going well thus far, Johanna leading Sakkari 6-2,4-2-come on! Unfortunately turned after postiing that as Konta lost 2nd 6-4. Pity Jo faded as Sakkari grew stronger losing final set 6-1, however good week in first clay court final with a few battling wins this week. Fact remains she had shot here and case of so near yet so far, though her opponent was fresher.

Oh dear. The last time I looked Jo was a set and a break up - I took the dogs out and came back to Maria serving out for the match. Did Jo just run out of steam?

Seems to be largely the explaination and Sakkari raised her game,Jo had spent a lot more time on court-winner had got through all previous matches in straights.

Teresa
18-05-2019, 14:19

@ Sallydaisy - I completely agree. I think Fed Cup reminded her how to win, even if it means winning ugly. She almost had to win her matches in Fed Cup, as senior player.

david1610
18-05-2019, 14:49
And not just any final... the 1000 events are only surpassed by the Slams themselves on the WTA circuit as well! :)
In the "Porsche race" ranking for points earned this year, she might end just end up in the top 20 probably nearer 10 than 20. And in the 12-month rankings she will be around top 25 :)
Last year ranking points up to 21 May counted for seeding points for the French Open. Will this give her a seeding for that i.e. will it count, as I do not know exactly what everybody's points total will be come Monday but she seems to have an excellent chance of being top 32.

JAMES4578

Anyway Johanna will have to come from behind if she is to advance. Sloane Stephens take the first 6-3,Sloane playing well but a bit of a loose service game made the difference. 3 all in the 2nd but Konta with twice as many unforced errors as winners at this point, contrast to Stephens. Had a break point for 5-3 but unable to return 2nd serve.

The Czech player is unseeded, current WR54, CH16 in January 2017 which was a good year for Barbora who beat Jo 7-5 7-6(5) in Tokyo in 2017 and thus leads their H2H 1-0.

What a brilliant match by Jo. Feel really lucky to have this kind of excitement despite Andy's absence. I see such increased mental strength in Jo - winning really pivotal, epic games against Sloane and today early in the second that she probably wouldn't have come through before, which seem to set her on her way. She's always had the game, now fantastic to see her realising her potential :clap::clap:

david1610
08-07-2019, 22:07
I watched a lot of her matches at the French Open and in a couple she was imperious in the sense that there was never any doubt who was running the show/was going to win - there were times as if she was playing exhibition matches. Until the semi final that is when she seemed to get the yips at the implications of that standard of play. In some ways I think she performs better as as an underdog as it relieves the pressure.
Her last two matches here have certainly been contests coming back after being a set down with periods of great play by her opponents. Let's see what happens next but thank you so much for maintaining British singles interest at this stage! :)

A bit frustrating as Jo seemed to be in control of the set, though Strycova took her chance and playing well. Now down break in 2nd, will be tough!

Konta out, and outplayed by Barbora Strycova who won 7'6(5),6'1 despite being 1-4 down to Konta in the first set. Very disappointing end to her Wimbledon run given how fantastically she had played in the first 4 rounds.

Konta's run over, disappointing. some inspiration by Strycova and she mixed it up effectively but that 2nd set was pretty substandard from Johanna, tactics seemed to unsettle her. Obviously there are positives to take from the tournament (2 big wins) but lessons to take moving forward.

Horrible match for Jo against a tricksy, wiley player. Reminded me a great deal of when Andy used to face Stepanek :faint: Difference is Andy could turn to plan B, C, D to find a way. Ah well, not to be to for Jo, many players have opponents who are an achilles heel for them, just hope she focuses on the many positives from the last few weeks. Onwards and upwards, JoKo!

Tennis as we know is often about match ups between player styles, but Jo seems to particular suffer from this, doing very well against certain types of players and less so against others. Oh well, a good tournament but a slight feeling of "if only"

10-07-2019, 12:11
the fallout from 'that' press conference continues. I'm glad/pleased that Jo stood up against what she clearly thought was a personal and unwarranted attack on her. Her response has also deflected away from her failure to perform to her best in a pressure situation, regardless of her saying otherwise. However I do think that she should have just ignored the question, or given a one-word answer and then moved on. Attempting to answer the question honestly has created a story in itself.

IMO the journalist only asked what we were all thinking. Playing the "have you played the game?" card is an easy cop out, and if the trend now is to play the bullying card every time a question is asked that someone doesn't like the sound of, then incisive journalism might as well pack up and go home.

Speaking generally rather than just about Jo, I've never understood the decision to make losing players do press. I tend not to watch but caught Stefanos' after his R1 loss - heartbreaking. Wish they were all just left alone.

Ash Barty was superb in her interview after losing. Very positive, everything in perspective, said team would be very supportive, didn't seem at all upset. Such a great girl with an excellent attitude.

Agree with you Goldfish. I can’t understand why Jo says she has no regrets because she should ‘regret’ that she didn’t win because then she’ll work on planB.

suttontennis
11-07-2019, 21:45
If Jo needs inspiration for Wimbledon, perhaps she should look to Virginia Wade, whose Wimbledon record from 1970 onwards was 4th round, 4th round, qf,qf, sf, qf until eventually winning in 1977. Just imagine what VW would have faced in a modern press conference after her 1976 loss. But she bounced back and won it as we all know.

JAMES4578

Sallydaisy
01-09-2019, 17:57
The H2H (https://www.wtatennis.com/headtohead) is 6-1 in Pliskova's favour including a win earlier this year in Rome 6'3, 6'4. The last time Jo beat her was in 2016 in Beijing in 3 sets with a tie-break in the 3rd. Jo perhaps needs to keep THAT win in her mind rather than the 6 losses ...

Unfortunately, she's lost the plot at the moment, already down a break in the 2nd set.

From the BBC after Jo's win in R2 ...

British number one Johanna Konta says she has "grown as a player" since losing to Karolina Pliskova in May, as she prepares to face the Czech third seed in the US Open last 16 on Sunday.

The 27-year-old beat Konta in straight sets in the Italian Open final.

Konta, 28, has since reached the French Open semi-finals and made the last eight at Wimbledon, and has looked in good form so far at Flushing Meadows.

"I am looking forward to seeing how I can do a bit better," Konta said.

Stu Fraser
Johanna Konta becomes the first Brit to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open women's singles since Jo Durie in 1983. A hard-fought 6-7 6-3 7-5 win over Karolina Pliskova.

Steven:
R4: Huge win for 16th seed @JohannaKonta (https://twitter.com/JohannaKonta), coming from a set & a break down to make her 6th slam QF & 1st at the US Open (1st British woman in QFs here since@Jodurie (https://twitter.com/Jodurie) made SFs 36 years ago), upsetting 3rd seed KarolÃ*na PlÃ*šková CZE WR 3 (CH 1 in 2017) 6-7(1) 6-3 7-5! :-)

Chris Clarey:
Only two women left in the US Open draw have won a Grand Slam singles title: Naomi Osaka in the top half & Serena Williams in the bottom half

Simon Cambers
Pliskova's defeat means that Naomi Osaka has to win the title to be No 1 after the @usopen (https://twitter.com/usopen).
