Whilst being born in Australia this young lady has been living in the UK since the age of 13. She has Hungarian parents and, via the EU, has been waiting an initial 5 years for naturalisation and a further year for her nationality to be officially recognised as British. This all went through over the last couple of days and as a result we have a new #6 in the British Womens rankings.
From her page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johanna_Konta)on Wikipedia:
Johanna Konta is a professional Australian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia) born British (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) tennis player playing in the ITF Women's Circuit. On May 14, 2012, she reached her highest WTA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women's_Tennis_Association) singles ranking of 204. Formerly playing as an Australian from May 2012, Konta earned British citizenship and will now will represent Great Britain.
From a news article in July 2008:
Johanna Konta, born in Sydney to Hungarian parents, is soon to be given British citizenship having just turned 17 . When that happens, she is likely to become Britain's leading female junior. The granddaughter of Attila Kertesz, who played in Hungary's football team of the Fifties that starred Ferenc Puskas, she has divided her time between London and Spain since the age of 13 and her Australian accent has almost disappeared.
She is now based at Roehampton's National Tennis Centre and explained: 'I'm only playing as Australian now under a technicality as my passport is coming through this year. I am definitely becoming British. There is no going back.'
From a report by Neil Harman in The Times on 9th February 2009:
Future's bright for British women
The final of the ITF women's $25,000 tournament in Sutton, Surrey yesterday saw Katie O'Brien of Britain defeat Johanna Konta, representing Australia 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. O'Brien has clearly picked up from where she left off in qualifying for the Australian Open last month and Konta, a 17-year-old, reached her first final of this magnitude. Intriguingly, the pair may be British team-mates one day soon.
Konta is three-and-a-half years into a five-year process which would guarantee her indefinite leave to remain in Britain, for which she qualifies through EU citizenship. This is followed by a 12-month naturalisation process after which she can apply for a British passport and thereby represent Great Britain. Konta is currently funded by the Lawn Tennis Association and trains regularly at the NTC in Roehampton, south west London. In two-and-a-half years, therefore, she could well be available to represent her "new" country in the Fed Cup.
The waiting time is up - and this is a lady to watch ...... 8 titles to her name already.

Here's a piccy so you can recognise her!

Welcome. Been following her for some time.
Didn't realise that her process had taken so long, and it was to do with politics not the will to do it, so thanks to to Sally for the info. Should be an interesting battle between her and Noami.

Maevellous for Johanna, she's certainly making an impact!

25-08-2012, 13:51
She is playing Timea Babos. OK a step up but Babos is currently ranked 59 so not completely out of sight! Babos is having her breakout year so had R1 RG and R2 Wimbledon so has only ever won one GS match!
Post-match interview with JoKo here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/19407174
Not sure if I like the 'how British do you feel?' question, but still, good to see her get recognition for a her maiden slam win.
JoKo up now against O. Govortsova, in her second round match, winning 3-0!!!!
david1610
31-08-2012, 13:17
Well that was very much a match of swings and momentums big one for Jo to get the first set, big one for Govortsova to get the second, not quite so straightforward in the third as Jo went to 3-0 to be pegged back to 3-2 but then went to 5-2 then a final swing against her to lose 5-7.
She will be upset and frustrated today.
Hopefully she can take the positives. Clearly she can hang in with those around the top fify so the current ranking of around two hundred is going to change quickly (actually, probably a lot due to the second round points).
Just needs to be positive and move forward. Yes, you could have been in the third round of a slam, but, more importantly, perhaps this was the week you started to realise that you were playing your peers!
good week for Jo - shame she lost this one, but I'm sure once she gets over the disappointment she'll be pleased with how she did.

JoKo has risen 55 places to a career high WR#148 this morning after her successes at the USO.
She's cementing her place as GB#5 nicely and is just 6 places behind Bally on #142.

Johanna will be the GBR #3 as of 4th February 2013.
She is playing in Eilat this week at an ITF ($75) event (which I think is the equivalent of Challenger level on the ATP Tour) giving her some good acclimatisation ahead of Fed Cup next week.
She was a direct entry and won her R1/2 matches and is currently playing in the QF.
Since Steven puts it so well on BT.net (http://britishtennis.activeboard.com/)I've copied his text into here.
L16: (7) Johanna Konta WR147 beat Anna KarolÃ*na Schmiedlová (SVK, WR192) 6'4, 6'4
In the end, she dropped just 3 points in the last 6 games from 0-4 down in the 2nd.
This win will take her to GB no. 3 at a new career high in the low 140s.
QF: (7) Johanna Konta WR147 v (2) Elina Svitolina (UKR, WR125)
Svitolina is still only 18 and was world junior no. 1 in 2010 at the age of 15 after winning the Roland Garros girls' title. She reached a WTA career high of 112 in December after winning the Pune WTA Challenger, beating Date-Krumm in the Final.

Jo is headed up the rankings on Monday after her run to the Final in Vancouver and potentially a "W" today.
It's too late (rankings wise) for her to be a Direct Entry into the USO but being seeded in Qualifying will be a boost and offer the chance to reach the main event on merit.
Best of Luck today in the Vancouver Final and beyond.

Gift of a break in the first game and a tricky hold, but she leads 2-0!
Another tricky hold 3-1
Slightly more comfortable. 4-2 Extra break would help! C'mon Jo!
5-3. Hold to 5-4. Joana now to serve the set out. She does 6-4
But 0-1 and down 15-40 on her serve in the second.
Not only does she hold but she then breaks to go 2-1 up.
Now 3-1.
Now 4-2.
She has got the double break! 5-2
She has done it! And her opponent is ranked 119.
Really good win! Two tournaments in a row. Did not lose a set last week. Just one this week!

So pleased for Jo. I fell asleep just after she broke in the 2nd set but thought she could finish Fichman off so turned off the laptop and the light.
This result will take her to around 115 in todays rankings per Steven:
Steven @GBtennis (https://twitter.com/GBtennis) 9m (https://twitter.com/GBtennis/status/364255092511227904) 190 Winnipeg & Vancouver points going on means a new career high for @JoKonta91 (https://twitter.com/JoKonta91), who jumps 32 places to 115 in the WTA singles rankings! :-)
Well done Jo. So happy for her. :bravo: :trophy: :GBflag:

Good run by her this tournie, nice to see we have t Brits in the QF, both with potentially winable matches.
Joko up first at around 08.00, followed by Robbo. Both on Centre, presumably because they're playing Chinese players.

In its own way this was just as satisfying. Coming back to the bread and butter early rounds and focusing and getting a W was an important statement by her! Well done Jo!

I watched a lot of the match. It wasn't a good match by either player, both struggled for consistency but Jo's serve held the key. She won so many points behind it that Rogers wasn't able to get any sort of foothold into the match. Jo seemed to be going for her shots a lot more than usual, and missing.

How amazing is she playing? Can't see her losing anytime soon! Exciting stuff xx
I managed the to see the first set of Jo's match but couldn't stay awake any longer to see it through! (slept in this morning as a result!) But I felt she was really comfortable against Lepchenko and was pretty confident she was going to win that one. Very pleased for her. Shame her match is so late for us tonight...I don't think I will manage it...depends on Wee Willie Winkie!
Awww another crack of dawn one. Good Luck Jo:thumbup::thumbup::trophy:

Approx 8pm in Montreal is 01.00 in the UK.

Definitely underplayed tonight. She's clearly the better player, just had an off-day. If anyone's entitled to one after the way she has played this year. But she'll be very disappointed. That serve wasn't firing, the backhand was off. Shame.
Now Cucova's second match point...

Disappointing but wasn't Jo's best day, credit to Kucova though and challenging after big moment last week.
I'm sure Jo will be disappointed but, hopefully, she is wise enough to write it off and not dwell on what might have been. She knows that if she had been anywhere near her top form she would have won that match. She just couldn't find her game tonight - it happens. We've seen it happen to Andy enough times. Onwards and upwards, Jo!
Sad, was suprised to see that result this morning. Onwards to Rio for her.
I heard she would have gone into the top ten, if she'd won.
Shame, but she's doing so well - who'd have thought she'd be knocking on the door of the top-10?!

What a fighter. Good luck in the quarters Jo!!! X
By my reckoning, Jo should be on Grandstand court in Cincy anytime from 8.30pm on (BST)....after Petkovic/Safarova who are currently in the first set. (providing it doesn't rain again!) She will play Vekic.
Petkovic/Safarova gone to a third set, so Jo might be another 30 mins!
Very comfortable win for Jo.

Transcript of Jo's press conference from yesterday. (http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=122590)
Q. Why didn't you attend the opening ceremony?
JOHANNA KONTA: I didn't because if I stand or sit for too long I literally get back spasms. I was like, That's not going to do me any good, so I watched it actually with some of the other athletes that couldn't go either just at our block. That was good fun.

Jo is 4th on Grandstand against Mattek-Sands
Jo is not going to be on for hours yet. Tsonga's match hasn't even started yet.
An expected win for Jo, as her opponent is more of a doubles player rather than singles. She plays Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round.
Well done Jo. It sounded pretty one sided from the bits I heard before falling asleep. Pironkova next.

It turned out to to be a fairly comfortable win for Jo,well done! Whilst Mattek Sands more successful in doubles she's had a few good singles wins defeating the likes of Aga Radwanska and Li Na. She reached no 30 in 2011 but ranking has dropped over the past few years.

This rule about no help for cramping is ridiculous. Jo is in serious distress here... she must get help soon! And it is set point so if Jo is going to be defaulted she should have tried to service badly twice and finish the set and get proper help.
It looks like more than cramp. Commies say she suddenly went bright red in the face.

Yes, I realise. But my point was she was in serious medical distress in a situation where in theory she cannot get help until the end of the game. Ridiculous.
How long is it going to take for someone to get there to help her? Oh - a physio at last. I can't see any way that Jo will be able to continue with this match - what a shame.

Rule seems unfair in the heat, looks like more than cramp though-talking about respiratory issues, really suffering in any case. Whilst up a set could be tough for Jo to continue but hopefully can get some help.
If only Jo hadn't got broken back as she would probably have finished the match earlier.

When players are talking to a doctor all media should mute the sound. Who knows what players might have to tell doctors so their full situation can be understood.

She seemed to almost literally get her breath back as the set progressed and Pironkova started out by keeping the ball in court so Jo got the early break and then mid set turned on the power and almost came back but in the end Pironkova did not have an answer to Jo's drop shots.
Gutsy but hopefully the doctor gave her the green light to play. Rest and rest and....

Great presser from Jo. Calm, cool and collected. Trying not to make a drama of what has happened.

I heard she got blurred vision and was hyperventilating towards the end of the second set. Good to know she got over it and plays Belinda Bencic in the third round.
That was quite scary to watch. It looked like the beginning of heat exhaustion to me - the hyperventilating, dizziness and blurred vision. People die from this!! I saw an adventure programme where a young fit guy in his 20's died out in the bush where there was little shade and not enough water. Clearly very different situation here but even so, it seemed to take an age to get her ice even (I was screaming at my TV for them to get ice on her!!) and an age it seemed before the doctor arrived.
Eurosport are showing the replay of her match. There were lots of comments from the commies about her condition and looking very red in the face etc for a while before she collapsed.

Won't detail anything here but apparently Jo was getting a fair bit of abuse on Social media (perhaps to be expected but in this case certainly uncalled for!)
That was bound to happen, particularly as she collapsed when Pironkova had set point. Anyone who was watching the match could see that it was genuine distress not gamesmanship.

Eurosport are showing the replay of her match. There were lots of comments from the commies about her condition and looking very red in the face etc for a while before she collapsed.
I watched the match and it was clear Konta was in difficulty for some time before she actually collapsed. It was very distressing to watch. If it had been cramp, she would have had to forfeit the point [and set] before she could have any medical assistance but it clearly wasn't cramp. I found it very worrying the amount of time it took for medical assistance to arrive. The rules are quite clear though, a MTO doesn't begin until an assessment has been made.
The rules are also clear that a player can have a bathroom break at the end of a set. Obviously Konta needed to change her clothes. This wasn't like Nishikori at the Olympics. She was doing what she had to in order to try and continue.
I do feel sorry also for Pironkova. It must have been very distressing for her to witness. But ultimately, she was unable to handle it and that is hardly Jo's fault.
I believe Jo had a long way to walk to the "bathroom" which is why she took so long changing.
