Right Jo, Simona is human, is as nervous as you, had nothing on her shots on penultimate point of TB, will feel she could have already won - you CAN take her down!!!

11-07-2017, 18:00
So pleased for her. After the way she lost the first set TB I thought Halep was going to be too mentally tough, but in the third set the fact she had made Halep work so much in the match took its toll.
Jo has made incredible strides in the last couple of years but today could be the sign of Jo going up to the next level where QF is the start, not the "end", of a tournament. Well done! :) :) :)

david1610
11-07-2017, 18:05
Well done Jo. She deserved it. But terrible from someone to scream like that from the crowd. Sorry for Halep for that ending.
Normally I would instantly agree but I remember Jo crying inconsolaby because of Nastase's behaviour in the Fed Cup match when she was playing. And I remember the accusation of bad gamesmanship by Cirstea claiming Jo had deliberately cried. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHFXhj_9GTc so just maybe a bit of karma there.

JAMES4578
11-07-2017, 18:09
A great victory for Johanna and she certainly showed her determination in high quality display and proving to be one of the big match players. Obviously frustrating it ended like that with the disruption from the crowd and not great for Halep however think Konta had the measure of her at that point. Up against it at many points but such a tough battler. Obviously a few chances missed which made it tougher but she was strong at the end.:clap::clap:

patlowe
11-07-2017, 18:12
Oh wow!! Yet another thrilling match. I feel a bit like I do after one of Andy's murraycoasters! It was so gripping. Even though many of her shots sailed out over the baseline, Johanna stuck to her plan of attack, attack, attack! And it worked. What a win. So proud of her. Well done our girl! :worship::worship::clap::clap:

That's irrelevant and not Halep's fault in any way.

Halep thought the ball had been called out and stopped playing. I'm not saying it was deliberate, but it's a bit stupid and hysterical, and unfortunate for Simona.

Konta got rid of the nerves which were stifling her when she won the tie-break and then there was no holding her. She deserved it!

RosieBear
11-07-2017, 19:34
Some good sense about the "MP scream" on Today at Wimbledon; Tracy Austin - "you learn at a very young age to play until you know the point is over", Marion Bartoli (echoing Jo's post match words) "it probably impacted Jo more than Simona". When a home player is on the verge of making slam history then naturally the crowd is going to be highly excitable and things like this happen. Too bad and I don't think Simona will see it any other way. Tbh, I don't get why Jo was even asked about it or TAW discussed it, it's a non-issue imo

Re the crowd impact on last pint, shame on whoever shouted out but definitely don't think there should have been a replay of the point. It would be an umpires nightmare trying to decide when a crowd call had impacted a point- remember the last point of Andys 2013 final? Yo could've had Djokovic complaining the cheer mid rally put him off. Would we have wanted the point replayed after all those match points? Shame as it was for Halep I think that sort of crowd noise is something players have to learn to block out and keep playing till the umpire says otherwise.

patlowe
12-07-2017, 08:03
Simona is fine. Some fair and gracious comments from her:

"I cannot complain about anything, says Halep":

I just think it was a shame the match ended that way and a shame for Halep. I haven't suggested point should be replayed. And yes it may well have been the last 'pint'. Definitely something made person in crowd behave badly. ;)

WimbledonWestie

Not to be. Sad. Like Andy, Johanna gave it everything and she too should be proud. Thank you for giving us all the thrilling matches Jo. Keep well and go for the US Open. I haven't watched Venus in a long while (confession...I had pretty much written her off!) and I have to say she was impressive.

JAMES4578
13-07-2017, 15:19
2nd set was disappointing from Jo, though Venus was certainly playing well. However Konta had a few chances she was unable to capitalise on,felt the 1st set was more crucial today as Venus is a good front runner as well as all that grass court pedigree and Jo had a tougher route to get there. However still a good tournament, should be able to take the positives and move further forward.

Josephine
13-07-2017, 15:44
Hard luck Jo but Venus was better. I think this 'ice cool' think about Jo is a bit exaggerated and she certainly got nervous - bad double fault in that crucial game. But it is all good experience and she can learn from that. Took Andy quite a few goes!

Think she should have waited for Venus but I guess she was upset. Still that is part of a Wimbledon semi.

Me too. She came over as very natural. It would be lovely if she could go on to win the US Open.

Did anyone hear this?.... "Listeners to BBC's Today programme on Radio 4 were incensed to hear him (John Humphrys) question Ms Konta's British citizenship after she made it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon..."

Maybe we'll see him on who do you think you are soon.
Probably they'll reveal he's a close relative of Richard Head.

IMHO there is a big difference between querying citizenship and 'xenophobia and sexism'. Perhaps his mistake was voicing it on air?

I think I might be related to Richard Head! Before the penny dropped, I wondered who on earth Richard Head was, so I googled him!! (:help::doh: yes! I know! Sad isn't it!!) At least my friends got a laugh when I told them!

I heard part of the radio interview and couldn't believe JH was going on about Jo's nationality. She's answered questions sooo many times. Let's move on - there is so much more to talk about!

Has JH ever interviewed Mo Farah, Justin Rose or Chris Froome to ask them about their nationality?:strawberry:

It's very unfair. British tennis fans are very thankful that she is now a British citizen and playing tennis under a Union Jack flag and not an Australian flag.

I didn't hear the interview so probably unfair of me to comment.

JAMES4578
19-08-2017, 01:19
Unfortunately Johanna went down to Halep 6-4, 7-6 . Good fightback from 2-5 in 2nd but wasn't enough and not great breaker. Simona certainly was in form but a few too many errors from Konta in crucial stages.

Jo is drawn againt Krunic in the bottom quarter (with Radwanska(2) who plays Sharapova in r1)

It seemed to me that in the 2nd and 3rd set Jo was using power instead of placement. She looked panicked to me and couldn't seem to deviate from power play and other usual reliable shots were erratic. Very disappointing after all the build up.

JAMES4578
28-08-2017, 20:28
Disappointing performance from Johanna though Krunic can be awkward on her day and showed some inspiration. Konta Just didn't impose herself after bright start and was misfiring too often, just surprising she couldn't find way through this one.

JAMES4578
28-08-2017, 20:45
A bit too much hype and Jo may well have put some of the pressure on herself. Think she needs a bit more variety to make the next move in any case, though has obviously had impressive results this year overall.

Don't underestimate Ash, she's had a stellar year considering she's played a limited schedule inc. qualies as she was WR 325 at the start of the year.
