But not the worst start to the year for Jo.

Hoped Jo would win this, on to Sydney next, then Melbourne defending 720 points for SF, looking like she will probably need to match that to stay in top10 afterwards

Certainly hoped and expected Jo to win really, however still a good run.

Regarding Jo's ranking, even if she lost in the first round in Melbourne she'd likely only drop 4 spots as she's built up a healthy gap after the 14th seed. However, 2 of those she'd drop below would be Azarenka and Kvitova who obviously are not playing at the mo.
Jo beat Gavrilova 6-1 6-3

Well done Jo....You didn't mention Kasatkina just beat world #1 Kerber 7-6(5) 6-2 so it's going to be a tough one
Well done Jo! Keep going for it!!

And once again she's the only seed left in her half of the draw. Kasatkina a tough opponent though.

Good win for Jo against Kasatkina 6-3 7-5 , opening up chances for jo and adding 80 points to her tally ( the 185 replacing a 105 )

Jo cannot drop below Azarenka (who drops 430 points herself at AO) but still needs another 430 after today's win, to stay above Kvitova. Jo will move up to #9 next week (above Kuznetsova) but will almost certainly be caught by her and possibly Svitolina and/or Suarez Navarro at the AO.
So pleased for Jo when I checked scores this morning! Interesting one against Bouchard.

Comprehensive win for Jo and another 120 points on top, Bouchard a shadow of the player who reached #5
Radwanska remains a massive challenge in the final, very difficult for Jo to get a result against her
JAMES4578
12-01-2017, 11:28
Emphatic win for Jo and bit of a contrast with their Wimbledon encounter, well done! Certainly will be tougher against Radwanska though.
Jo's playing well - it will be interesting to see how she does against Aga.

Live Rankings and points at AO removed
8 Madison Keys 21.9 USA2 4137 - 3897
9 Johanna Konta 25.6 GBR1 4055 +1 3275
10 Svetlana Kuznetsova 31.5 RUS1 3745 -1 3675
11 Petra Kvitova 26.8 CZE2 3485 - 3415
12 Carla Suarez Navarro 28.3 ESP2 2985 - 2555
13 Elina Svitolina 22.3 UKR1 2895 - 2825
Jo is currently up to 9
Jo will need a SF to go above Keys and r16 to stay above Kvitova
Difficult for Jo to stay above Kuznetsova who starts +400
both Suarez Navarro and Svitolina now need at least SF to climb above Jo
Fantastic start to the year!

Fab start to the year for Jo, well done
Brilliant from Jo, especially against Aggie. What a fantastic start to the year. Hope she can carry this forward to Melbourne, but poor Jo has a stinker of a draw.
What a wonderful start to 2017 for Jo! Unfortunately could only follow the match on Live Scores but so thrilling to see it unfold. After all the upsets she endured towards the end of last year, I really wondered how Jo would cope. Query answered! She should go into the AO feeling very confident. Good for her! Really well done Jo. You deserve it. :trophy:
Fantastic!
A pretty even match between Kirsten Flipkens and Jo so far. Jo served for the first set at 5-3 - was very nervy and dropped serve but managed to serve it out at 7-5. It's over 100 degrees on the court - brutal conditions. On serve in the second at 2-2. C'mon Jo! Am I the only one watching?
......... and Jo breaks for 3-2.
LOL! No Alis I am watching, I logged out as thought the same as you just me watching!:).......Come On Jo!!!........4-2

Quality. yes she was nervous serving it out, but she did well against a very tricky opponent. I have seen some first round ladies matches at GSs that have been so one-sided, and Jo had a GS Semi Finalist. She handled her very well.
Well done Jo!
Yeh, Johanna seemed to deal well with a tricky 1st rd opponent. Kudos to you guys who stayed up to watch. Wimp that I am had to go to bed defeated at 9pm.:sleepy:

She has got that mental clarity/calmness about her. At first I thought her opponent had the weapons to beat her, but it turned out the weapons were to win games rather than sets and the match. Well done! Watched Karo rather demolish Vekic. Wonder how Jo's game will match up?

Wishing Jo good luck tomorrow, if she carries on playing has she has done she will go through but Wozniacki is the toughest one she could get in r3. The good news is a win will keep her above Kvitova and likely to stay in the top10 (still a possibility somebody lower ranked could win to go above her)
However Jo currently leads the WTA Race
1 Johanna Konta 25.6 GBR1 710
2 Karolina Pliskova 24.8 CZE1 600
3 Agnieszka Radwanska 27.8 POL1
4 Alize Cornet 26.9 FRA2 432
5 Garbine Muguruza 23.2 ESP1 425
6 Svetlana Kuznetsova 31.5 RUS1 395
7 Barbora Strycova 30.8 CZE3 375
8 Shuai Zhang 27.9 CHN1 361
9 Mona Barthel 26.5 GER8 355
10 Angelique Kerber 29 GER1 341
I know it doesn't mean anything at this stage in the year but it's still brilliant to see Jo on top of the pile!

Apart from the last game to close it out, I doubt she has ever played a better set than that. It was one of those "in the zone" moments that players have once or twice a season. Or is it a sign that Jo is ready for the next level, which would be very exciting! :)
Wahey!!!:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: Fantastic performance - very well done Jo!:GBflag::bravo::skippy:

So delighted to wake and see Jo had beaten Caroline, and judging by the score, with some ease. Didn't manage to watch it. I absolutely couldn't manage another sleepless night! Watched the match live this morning. She was very impressive.
She seems to be brimming with confidence at the moment. Let's hope she can reach the Quarters and make a good showing against Serena, who is likely to be her opponent.
She's second on the Margaret Court after the Bryan brothers match.
Has anyone heard of Wim Fissette, Jo's new coach? He's claimed, in an interview, he believes Jo can win a Grand Slam. I've always believed it.
Has anyone heard of Wim Fissette, Jo's new coach? He's claimed, in an interview, he believes Jo can win a Grand Slam. I've always believed it.
He's coached Halep and Clijsters if I remember correctly.
He's coached Halep and Clijsters if I remember correctly.
And Azarenka I think.
Wim's coaching career.........
Kim Clijsters (2009–2011)
Sabine Lisicki (2013)
Simona Halep (2014)
Victoria Azarenka (2015–2016)
Sara Errani (2016)
Johanna Konta (2017–)
Credit to Wikipedia.........
Fissette first took on the role of Kim Clijsters' coach upon the Belgian making a comeback onto the WTA Tour in 2009, having previously served as her hitting partner prior to her first retirement in 2007. Under his stewardship, Clijsters won the US Open that year as a wildcard entry, and successfully retained the title twelve months later. She also won the 2010 WTA Tour Championships, which was followed shortly after by the Australian Open early the following year. She also reigned as the world number one for a solitary week in 2011. Fissette and Clijsters split in September that year.[2]
After splitting from Clijsters, Fissette became the coach of Sabine Lisicki shortly before the commencement of the 2013 French Open. Although Lisicki was unable to win any titles under Fissette's leadership, she was able to reach the final at Wimbledon, losing to Marion Bartoli in straight sets after ending Serena Williams' 34-match winning streak and preventing her from equalling elder sister Venus' 35-match winning streak set in 2000 en route.[3][4]
In 2014, Fissette became the coach of Simona Halep. Their partnership brought about improved results for Halep, who that year reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open, the final of the French Open and then the semi-finals at Wimbledon. She also reached a career high ranking of world number two in August that year. The pair split at the end of the year, with Halep wanting to focus on working with coaches from her native Romania.[5][3][6]
In February 2015, Fissette became the coach of former world number one Victoria Azarenka, whose previous coach Sam Sumyk defected to coach Eugenie Bouchard (and later Garbiñe Muguruza). At the time of this appointment Azarenka was ranked 50th in the world, her lowest ranking since June 2007.[7] Fissette remained with Azarenka until she announced her pregnancy in mid-2016; he now coaches Johanna Konta.[8]

Well done jo, second set sounded quite tough, thanks to Alis and Lynne for the updates. Virtually guarantees her top 10 place, only Venus catch catch her by winning it and the start Jo has made this year is better than last year even if she is beaten by Serena with the win in Sydney. I do think she can beat Serena and if she does fancy her to at least reach the final. Certainly this is a tough one but Jo has shown how, on her day, she can beat anyone.

Good morning. Well done. Keep it to one break. Build confidence.
C'mon Jo!
Well held, Jo. Unfortunately, Serena has come out to play today but Jo's playing well too.

Drat - Serena breaks for 2-1. Morning RB.
Morning Alis and all. Come on Jo!
Unfortunately, Jo has met Serena in absolutely top form today. Serena takes the set 6-2.

Oh well. First set and after a good start Serena turned on the power.
She has to tell herself there is still plenty to play for.
C'mon No!

Honestly think if sun wasn't a factor they'd be level. Jo broken from sunny end twice. Held comfortably from other end. Serena with monster serve can take some off at tricky end. Wish the commentators would stop being so negative :grrr: long way to go. C'mon Jo!
Well, that's a new one - Serena's even getting her 'noise' right according to Jo Durie!
......... and Jo holds from 0-40 - fantastic!

Good hold. Now if Serena could have a blip on serve. C'mon Jo!

Impressive Jo! She doesn't panic even 3bp down to Serena
Yay - Jo breaks - fantastic! Now hold, Jo.

Yes. A break. Now if she can just hold and build on this!
C'mon Jo!

Jo's got to consolidate from sunny end :nailbiter: C'mon Jo, you can do it!

Just needs to be positive but not think she has to paint the lines. C'mon Jo!

Serena getting tetchy - Go for double break Jo!
Not that time - just keep holding, Jo.

So be it. Head up. Try again. C'mon Jo!

That was a much better point. Moved Serena around. Gradually won the point rather than with a big winner. C'mon Jo!
Agh - a missed return and two aces give Serena the game. Rats - that was a chance missed.
I wonder whether those matt black sleeves make it harder to read her serve, or any other shot for that matter?

Possibly - I hadn't thought of that. Serena breaks and is serving for the match.

Oh well. Serena on form. Jo did well but hopefully can learn and do even better next time.
A love service game gives Serena the win. Not to be for Jo today - apart from a minor blip, Serena on top form. Three women over 34 in the semis - amazing!

Bad luck Jo  Shame that wasn't final as they are 2 best players in field. Well done to Serena.
Still an excellent start to the year for Jo - well done!

Pity for Jo but Serena too strong for her today. Just unfortunate she couldn't take advantage of lead in 2nd. Still good run and should benefit from this first meeting.

Tough Jo, thanks Alis RB Linda David for the updates. Seems like Serena is hitting form, pity she wasn't in the other half.
I had hoped Jo would at least take a set off Serena.
I had really thought Jo might sneak this one. Not to be.
But a great start to the year for Jo - lots more to come!
Unfortunately, Serena raised her game today and played better than she has all tournament. That is credit to Jo though - Serena knew how dangerous she would be and had some very encouraging words for Jo in her on-court interview. Does anyone know where Jo's ranking will be next week. Xx

She has dropped to 10 as a result of losing today. She will stay at 10 unless Venus wins the tournament which will push her back to 11.

Although in the WTA Race, she is guaranteed to be 3rd at the end of this tournament.

I was thinking the same thing. All the players know that she is force to be reckoned with now. I think that's why SmugFed does it with Andy. We all hate it, but actually it's a sign of respect.
Sorry Jo lost, but no disgrace. Plenty more to aim for this year. Thanks for the pleasure you have given us Jo! :bravo:

She is missing St. Pete 470 next week but then has Doha 470 and Dubai 900 the following 2 weeks and no Serena. Let's hope Jo can continue her good form at both of those!
