Well done Jo, glad you hung in there and got the win. Internet here in the Smoky Mountains not that brilliant, especially on a holiday weekend. I missed the first set, probably a blessing, and managed to watch the rest with a bit of buffering to make it even more tense!!!!

Phenomenal by JoKo to beat the 3rd seed - must admit I thought she was a goner at a set and 1-3 down but she was steely and impressive. When she was serving at 4-5 in 3rd to stay in the match was something else and clearly rattled Pliskova's cage. I feel like Jo's overcome the nervey issues, these days it's just tricksy players that are her achilles' heel - let's hope for conventional opponents and a good run!

I still think those Fed Cup matches in February and April when she dug deep to win helped with days like today. IMHO.

I think so too. Those matches reminded her how to win again. The smile on her face today was pure delight. She knew she had earned the victory.

Jo seems up against it , whilst relatively close on points, too many errors on the key ones. However a few great points and breaks back for 3 all.

Svitolina now just one game away after awful miss from Konta, form/confidence not quite there today and comeback will be more challenging this time.

Lost in straight sets, but she did better than her seeding, so a positive tournament for her.

Some great shots from Johanna, but not enough of them. Svitolina outplayed her, and Johanna put up a good fight. No disgrace.

JAMES4578
03-09-2019, 18:00
Yes just not the consistency today though Svitolina played pretty well and maybe not best matchup for her , hoped for more but still had good run.

Jan

I think given Jo's form going into the tournament we'd have taken the QF! Sounds as though she was beaten by the better player.

RoastLamb

I find Johanna and esp. her serve a bit robotic, like Marian Bartoli. But I'm very disappointed she didn't win yesterday. I do hope Svitolina can beat Serena.

Alis
04-09-2019, 14:49
I really think it could have gone either way - it was the number of unforced errors from Jo that made the difference. Otherwise there really wasn't too much between them.

This is a real test of her always positive attitude. I hope that the injury isn't going to affect her long term, but there are plenty of instances of players taking a few steps back, to regain their old form. Heather for one has suffered a drop down the rankings but she's slowly working her way up. Trouble is, the ladies game is so wide open and so many players are capable of beating each other she's going to have to work really hard to achieve her former top 10 status.

JAMES4578

Johanna was sublime! Really hope she can go all the way. I'd love to see her truly realise her potential in masters and slams - but needs to avoid tricksy slicey-dicey players as they are her Achilles heel, or better still, start getting a handle on them so she can beat anyone (on her day). Quick break of serve for Jo to open the first set, and a good hold for 2-0.

Cirstea held, then broke back. 2-2.

Sallydaisy

Konta broke again, serving at *3-2.

However, breaks of serve seem to be happening in this match so who knows!

Sallydaisy
03-09-2020, 18:38
5-5.
Longest game of the match so far with several deuces on the Cirstea serve but she fought well and has held for 6-5. Jo to serve to stay in this set and take it to a tie-breaker for the 2nd OR it goes into a 3rd if Cirstea breaks Konta.

Sallydaisy
03-09-2020, 19:01
Tie-break - and Cirstea has struck!!! Leads 4-1 with a double break.
Jo to serve:
*2-4
*2-5
2-6* and 4 set points to Cirstea
3-6* well, Jo got one back. She needs another 5 .....
*4-6
*5-6 Cirstea has 2 serves for the 2nd set.
Ace to take it.

Jo 6'2, 6'7(5) and into a 3rd we go.

Dan will have to wait.

Not a good result for the #3 seed. However, it's her first match since pulling out of the AO with an abdominal injury so it was good to see her moving more easily in the 2nd set and finding her range.

Unfortunately, Shelby Rogers was in command of her range throughout the match ... and found form over the last 2 weeks having reached the 4th round of the AO Grand Slam.

Hum ho.
I think Jo is heading to Miami after this, she's not down to play anywhere next week.

EDIT: Jo due to play in Monterrey, week of 15 March. Gives her time to adjust to 'US' time ahead of the Miami event.

JAMES4578

Konta had the better start but from the midst of the 1st set Cristea stepped it up, unfortunately Johanna was never really in the hunt after she lost the breaker. Hopefully has more success on the grass.

Konta took the first set 6'1 against Kerkhove and was leading 3'1 in the 2nd with a break but has just been broken by the Dutch player. Lesley Kerkhove holds to love and it's 3'3.

Saved the best performance of the week for the final. Almost looked like the Konta of old. And always so gracious in victory or defeat.

Jo withdraws from her match with Gauff. Sorry, no details so far

There seem to be an awful lot of withdrawals - and some of these players keep doing it. (Istomin and many of the Japanese). I feel that there should be some limit on the number unless it happens on the court because it might imply some unfitness. I always feel sorry for the player who just lost and an unfair advantage to the next player who doesn’t have to play a round!!

Johanna Konta has pulled out of the upcoming events in Chicago and Indian Wells, citing the groin injury which prevented her playing at the US Open. Seems increasingly likely she won’t play again this year.

Threatened briefly to make a real impact on the game. At times her game was quite dominating against all but the best, but did struggle against equally powerful players. As the tour in general moved to a 'power game' I feel injuries may well have taken their toll, as well as the demands of travelling and the pressure placed on her from being the highest profile Brit on tour. I will miss her engaging personality, always ready to put a positive spin on her game and always looking to learn.
Think she won't be the last Brit to retire in the next 6-12months, as we see a 'sea change' in the rankings. good luck to her in the future.

Not at all surprised - injury niggles, Covid disruption to a couple of attempted comebacks and she is clearly very happy in her private life with her wedding plans well underway. And I think she's just acquired a 4th dog to add to the 'family' so she has plenty else to keep her occupied and a life outwith tennis to look forward to.

Good Luck to her

Not too surprising but still pity Johanna could end her career on her own terms and missed so many big events this year. certainly highs in her career mixed with disappointments, still some great memories and obviously injuries took a toll in recent years. Al the best to Johanna in the future!

Always sad to see the end of a playing career, it's so fleeting. I'll miss watching Jo even if she did frustrate me sometimes (only because she could be so brilliant when on song). Wishing her every happiness for the next part of her life, which I hope includes plenty of punditry because she's so articulate and pleasant. All the best Johanna!

I heard it on the radio, on my way home back from the dentist. I know she'd been having injuries and, last year, she admitted that she wanted to start a family. I wish her well.
