Eek you must be a couple of shots ahead of my stream....

Yes he has to keep enough energy to hold serve. C'mon Kyle.
Hold and then next time it is break hold out of the heat!!!!

19-01-2018, 03:30
is it just my memory playing tricks, or does Kyle tend to get to 40-0 relatively easy and ease off or something because he seems to struggle to get one more point.
Anyway, c'mon Kyle!

Yes, there does seem to be a pattern.

Well folks I have to be honest, I went to bed after the third set as I did not have enough faith in Kyle to turn this match around & that's one thing I have never done with Andy, so it was great to see the result earlier & Bravo young Kyle for turning it around & to you folk for having the belief, learnt my lesson there! Lol!

Watched the first 2 sets then had to go. Eyes were betraying me by not staying open! But loved what I saw of Kyle. Was feeling confident he could pull this off and he did! Well played Kyle. I was impressed when he beat Anderson in 5 sets. I am doubly impressed now that he toughed it out in the heat and took yet another 5 setter. That is huge progress. Go Kyle.:bravo:

Well done to all of you that stayed up. Went to bed after he broke at the beginning of the second set, thinking he would get it in 3.

Watched my recording this morning, not knowing the result, and boy, what a match.

Well done Kyle.

I'm sure people know but just in case not, it is possible to watch the matches early morning on eurosport and avoid the score. I watched this morning on the on demand section. they have whole match and it's just like it's live. It's not always clear where to find it in that they don't label what match is what but I found it fine by clicking through them. It does avoid falling asleep and missing the end. You can easily avoid result by not logging on to anywhere.

fabulous for Kyle. And us. :skippy:

Caro

I wish I could still record but we got rid of sky about this time last year so I only have eurosport player now. At least they do catch up though. Not the same when you know the result and I knew I wouldn't be able to wait till I got home from work. Hope to be able to watch his next match!

Australian Open (https://ausopen.com/articles/features/five-things-we-learned-day-5) - Five things we learned on Day 5

It’s not often you see a set decided in the second game – nor, for that matter, to play a game with more than enough points to settle six. Yet so it proved for Kyle Edmund, who found himself trailing Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili by two sets to one in the early exchanges of the fourth, holding before switching ends and waiting to receive. Then this happened:

tweet
#AusOpen ✔ @AustralianOpen (https://twitter.com/AustralianOpen)

Well, this is something:

The fourth set of #Edmund (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Edmund?src=hash) vs #Basilashvili (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Basilashvili?src=hash) lasted 36 minutes.
The second game of that set, in which there was 36 points and 15 deuces, lasted 20 minutes by itself.

Not only did the Briton claim the break after the mammoth 20-minute game (technically 19mins 59secs, but who’s counting?) but with the temperatures around Melbourne Park edging towards 40°C, the serving effort seemed to leave Basilashvili spent for the rest of the set as Edmund racked up a bagel, and later the victory (https://ausopen.com/articles/match-report/edmund-edges-past-basilashvili).

“Probably the longest game of my career, to be honest,” Edmund said afterwards. “I mean, sets get played as quick as that. That game actually worked out to be a very key game, because that game was a set from him.”
Throw in a medical time-out after just three games for a back problem, the three hours, 24 minutes spent out in the sweltering Victorian sun, and the nerveless 7-5 finish in the final set, and you have to admit: that was some display from GB’s last representative in the singles draws. And don’t just take our word for it…

Agree with pat, I was very impressed with the Anderson match but doubly impressed with this one. Fighting through in those conditions show immense physical and mental strength. It illustrates once more just how far he has come. What a warrior. It all builds confidence that can only help him both here and in other tournies.

Totally :) This time last year I don't think Kyle would have won one of his big matches, nevermind both. The off-season work at Lleyton Hewitt's new academy in the Bahamas is really, really paying off. It's always said that 1% can make the difference, and Kyle is up far more than that on many keys stats. He's worked so hard, physically and mentally, in the break plus sacrificed being away from his family that he's really close to and I'm delighted for him that he's reaping dividends straightaway.

Really looking forward to the QF already. Both their previous encounters have been tight 3 setters*, especially Brisbane which was nip-and-tuck until Kyle hurt himself, so expecting another close one. Should be fun. Good luck, Kyle!

* Washington 2017 Dimi won 7-5 4-6 6-3
Brisbane 2018 Dimi won 6-3 6-7(3) 6-4

Kyle's never played Nick before so definitely pleased he hasn't got the unconventional Aussie and his bag of tricks to contend with.

Really enjoyed Kyle's match despite unfortunately missing the first set. I was worried he might be suffering some after effects of the extreme heat in his previous round, but glad to see that wasn't the case. The old Kyle would have buckled at a set and a break down, but the new Kyle didn't. Great stuff.

Wasn't too bothered who won in the Dimi V Nick match. Thought Nick was lucky not to get a warning. I am still finding him a bit frustrating to watch but can't deny his talent and shot-making can be glorious.

Kyle will have a tough match against Dimi, but nothing to lose so he can just go for it. To be the best you've got to beat the best, so glad Kyle is getting the chance to mix it with the big boys :GBflag:

When I reflect on how if one blinks you miss your grand kids growing up. And if I could I would love to freeze my youngest (Jack) at the 18 months he is now.

This is the other side of the coin and just as wonderful to see. The beginning of the coming of age. Which I hoped would have started just after Serbia.
Just goes to show you are a reflection of the company you choose to keep.

BUT since Eurosport renamed this programme from quarter final to the named match Kyle v Dimi my Recording had disappeared for this quarter final. Same happened to Tennisfan and she has just run to tell me this.

Have now set the Recording to the actual named match.

Firstly, it was another great win for Kyle, he deserved it and after his matches this week he deserves his place in the quarters. When the match began I was so sure he would win, even More than I was with the Berdy win over delpo. My confidence was unwavering which surprised me. I never thought he was going to lose. Luckily he didn't otherwise I would have gone into post arrogance shock lol.

I wasn't so sure of the the Dimi match. i wanted Dimi to win, mainly as nick can be frustrating and I liked Kyle's chances against Dimi more than against nick. I didn't expect to get my way with that match. Happily I was wrong. Today, is different because it's the fist match if the tournie where I don't feel confident of a win for Kyle. It's going to be a huge ask. Matches have been close for th before and he's playing well so it's not like he doesn't have a chance but it will be more stressful watching that all the others.

Regardless of the result today it's an amazing achievement to get to the quarter final, he's put in a lot of work and it's paid off, he has a new career high and it's been a fantastic start to the season. So well done to him on everything so far and good luck for today's match.

I wonder what his plans are for February? Last year it was Delray Beach followed by Acapulco (with no great success) befoe IW and Miami (where he only won a match at IW). Great chance to make further strides forward in the rankings in the next 2 months.

At worse he'll be Number 4 in the Race come Sunday evening.

Radio five live did live commentary on the match and I cried happy tears when Kyle won. Gigi Salmon claimed he was now world number 27, while Russell Fuller claimed Kyle was now world number 25. I just looked it up and he's world number 26. Russell Fuller and David Law kept comparing him with Magnus Norman and Robin Soderling though David Law did have to mention Kyle Edmund was now based in the Bahamas because of tax, very bad taste by David. I don't pay tax as I don't earn enough, would David have a go at me? I loved Ky;e's reference to Andy, during his on court interview.

And more's to the point, factually incorrect. Kyle relocated to the Bahamas to join Lleyton Hewitt's training programme at the Aussie's Albany Sports Academy which opened last summer. Clearly a very good decision by Kyle. Horrible and ill-informed reporting by Laws, the type of which leads to an unfair backlash against Kyle. People need to get their facts right.

Well done Kyle.

But yes he is a tax exile in the Bahamas. And Stell - someone who does not earn enough to pay tax is not avoiding tax.

You don't pay no tax by training at a tennis academy - you have to be a resident.

"The standard residency procedure requires a minimum $500,000 investment to be made in a real estate purchase on the island. A fast-tracked procedure can be triggered by a real estate purchase on the island of at least $1,500,000.

The amount of personal income tax to be paid is fairly simple to calculate, the tax rate being… 0%. Consequently, there is no need to file an income tax return. Personal income tax: 0%."

So poor Kyle who apparently hadn't earned much had to pay half a million or 1.5 million to be a resident - that is making a distinct choice.

And I will be very sad when Andy loses his GB number 1 to him. Obviously Andy knew this was coming but I'm sure he didn't think it would be so soon. I should think there will be part of Andy hurting when he loses GB No 1. No matter what he may tweet.

If Andy & Kyle had played a match and at stake was GB#1 then there might be some interest but if one of the players is unable to accumulate ranking points then it's a mundane numbers game. On the other hand, I think Kyle winning the Australian Open ahead of Andy would irk a little, it's only human nature.

Stunning, simply stunning Kyle. It's almost like a dream. Kyle has such a different demeanour now...he comes across as positive and has the air of yes I can do this, and yes, I will do this. We all hope so too Kyle. It's made this AO one to remember for a while. And I hope he can maintain this for some time to come. Sam Smith is very much behind Kyle, she reckons he can win this whole thing, qualifying it by saying that she wasn't saying he would win it, simply that he can.

Well I totally agree you, B (just for a change :big grin:) With Andy out of action the rankings are a meaningless and temporary blip. As for this tournament at the end of the day someone has to win here and I have no doubt that Kyle is Andy's preferred choice. Yep, of course, after all those finals if Kyle wins here it will sting - but Andy being the champ that he is would use it to come back stronger. Like he's happy for, yet also competitive with, Jamie's GS wins.

If I could swap a Kyle Aus win for great health for Andy I'd do it in a heartbeat, but I can't so the only thing to do is make the best of and take pleasure in available possibilties. So go on Kyle, my son!

david1610
23-01-2018, 15:11
Put it like this, do you think when Kyle wakes up later his first thought will be:

(1) OMG I am in a Grand Slam semi final for the first time!

(2) Let's look at the table. That's another 440,000 AUS dollars stashed away. Better prepare well - next one is worth over a million AUS dollars!

(Men's & Women's Singles Winner 4,000,000 Runner-up 2,000,000 Semifinalists 880,000 Quarterfinalists 440,000 Round of 16 240,000 Round of 32 142,500 Round of 64 90,000 First Round 60,000 AUS dollars)

Andy bought his house in Miami before his UK house didn't he? The priority was a place to practise in warm weather (and in one of the places where there are other top tennis players not far away for practice). The thread mentions Hewitt's tennis academy. I do not know Kyle's priorities but at the least tennis considerations must have factored in to where he lives.

Andy's thoughts.... he wants the rehab to go well and is crossing his fingers and toes so that each step goes well. That is a no brainer.

Andy is very patriotic. Don't forget this means there is more positive Kyle Edmunds coverage and less "what are we going to do without Andy Murray" negativity which is another form of stress on our lad!

And patriotic tennis thoughts:
David Cup Schedule 2018

World Group first round: 2-4 February World Group quarterfinals: 6-8 April World Group semifinals and play-offs: 14-16 September

If GB lose to Spain in February, Andy's recovery goes well and Kyle makes solid progress into the top 20, then that is good news for staying in the World Group this year and mounting a much stronger challenge in 2019 - if Kyle is going to win his share of ties it puts much less pressure on a post-op, thirtyish Andy which is only to the good.

He bought a half million 1.5 million dollar property to become a resident of Bahamas to avoid tax. That is a fact. He could practice there without being a resident. So Mr Laws is factually correct.

Most of the richest people and organisations in the world avoid tax while others get poorer. To me it is a moral issue and I have no admiration for Kyle Edmund's behaviour in that respect.

That performance from Kyle was amazing , WOW , is all I can say . Haven't seen him play for a while , and can see such an improvement in him , that forehand of his is something else !!

Oh Kyle! Suddenly I’m smiling again! Have been missing Andy playing so much but am over the moon to be glued to the tv (admittedly only the BBC highlights) with a big grin on my face because of this young man who we have watched grow into such a strong, well-adjusted player. Always felt he’d make his mark at some stage - just didn’t expect it to be in a GS! What a fantastic attitude he has and what a credit to Andy’s friendship and example. Wonderful, simply wonderful. All the very very best for the semi-final against Cilic, Kyle. You can do this!

Sad to think that in space of a year Andy can go from number one in world to not even 1 in Britain. Even if not this week, it will happen soon as his ranking drops. However, it's a temporary state of affairs and I like that Kyle will take over as a result of a massive achievement rather than simply sidle past as a result of circumstance.

As for the tax thing. Well, it's disappointing but it's his life and who are we to judge. I doubt the Serbs are less pleased by novaks achievements because he lives in Monaco.

A #nolefam stalwart compiled this list(needs updating) of players whose main residence isn't their own country. It was in reaction to Djokovic, in their snowflake eyes being singled out as a tax exile when so many others do the same. They also quote the reason that so many chose Monaco is because there are many top class players to practice with. In their irritation that Andy's not a tax exile they suggest that him having a property in Florida which has 0% income tax means he considered moving there permanently. French players don't live in Monaco as the French government consider all French nationals living there as if they were living in France and would be taxed accordingly. Most surprising fact is that Mannarino lives in Malta!

Well done Kyle.......brilliant! As usual I'm hours behind everyone else. Hid from the scores and watched after work! So happy for him and also for Andy, I think his tweet shows how happy he is too. I'm not ready for any passing of the baton yet though, just give Andy something to aim for.........British number one again! Bring on Cilic, can't wait!

What a great match and result for Kyle. Couldn't watch the match as not at a place where I can get up in the middle the night to watch tv. :( Very sad about that having followed Kyle for quite a while.

I have a question about the 0% income tax for Florida. I am a resident of Florida and there is no State Tax but there is US Federal Tax, so I'm not sure where the 0% income tax comes in?

He bought a half million 1.5 million dollar property to become a resident of Bahamas to avoid tax. That is a fact. He could practice there without being a resident. So Mr Laws is factually correct.

Most of the richest people and organisations in the world avoid tax while others get poorer. To me it is a moral issue and I have no admiration for Kyle Edmund's behaviour in that respect.

Hi Josephine In my reply to RB's post I said " I don't call it reporting other than him reporting on his personal feelings re the move."
I'm sorry but i put you in the same camp?
As you said "To me it is a moral issue and I have no admiration for Kyle Edmund's behaviour in that respect."

So can I ask you a question?
Lets say you inherit or earn or invest an amount of money and it comes up trumps. What is the most moral thing you can do with that money?
A, Keep it yourself? (After you have paid tax)
B, Invest it for the future for the whole of mankind. To the benefit of what and those you hold dear and can help the most with your built up knowledge?
C, Give it to the government? or 50% + of it and only help 50% - of what you could have helped in B, above?

Which did Kyle do? None of the above that I can see.

Personally I wouldn't change my country of residence to avoid paying tax.

If all the individuals and companies which avoid paying tax, actually paid what they owed in GB, we might be able to have a health service where people didn't wait on trolleys for hours, die waiting for ambulances or have operations cancelled.

And giving donations to charities out of my imaginary millions would not achieve that.

Andy manages to pay tax in UK and contribute to and do a lot of work for charities so I really don't think you need to pay 0% tax to be a philanthropist.

Australian Open (https://ausopen.com/articles/features/five-things-we-learned-day-9) - Five things we learned on Day 9

2. Edmund’s Gonzo figures come to the fore
One hundred and twenty-seven forehand winners: an average of 25 per match, plus change. That’s the weapon that has fired Edmund to his first Grand Slam semifinal, and those who saw the hammer blows he was striking against Dimitrov will attest: it’s got to be one of the most destructive shots in tennis.
“I've believed always,” said the world No.49, who will face Marin Cilic in the semis. “I know I have a big shot in that. I know my game. It's nothing new to me. I know what I need to do out there: go out there and work out ways to get my forehand, work out ways best how to use it. As I get older, wiser, more experienced, I'm learning how to use it more effectively. So, yeah, I have really big confidence in it. That's the way I've played my game.”
With Edmund, it seems, it was a case of see one, hit one, hone one. Asked who his idols were growing up, the 22-year-old referenced Australian Open 2005 champion Marat Safin and 2007 finalist Fernando ‘Gonzo’ Gonzalez, the Chilean nicknamed Mano de Piedra, or Stone Hand.

“I enjoyed watching Safin just because of the way he played. He was a very explosive, powerful player. On his day, he could be really good. I like Gonzo, as well, just because of his forehand and stuff. The players I liked to watch is how I like to play, you could say.”

Perhaps Thursday night should be billed battle of the forehands: Edmund may lead the FH winners tally but second on the list is one Marin Cilic, 12 shy of the Briton’s tally with 115.

Some of Edmund's FH returns have literally been 20mph faster than Dimitrov's 2nd serves.

Not before 8.30am tomorrow morning. A sensible time to get up to watch one of the most amazing, but unpredicted, semi-finals of the AO!
Kyle has filled a big gap in my tennis-watching, with Andy being out of action, and I'm over-the-moon for this young man of such power and promise!
We've watched him develop during Davis Cup ties over the last few years, alongside the perfect mentor in Andy, and his captaincy of the squad during Andy's absence was nothing short of a taste of the future for this well-adjusted, competent young player. He will, I'm certain, become a mentor himself for new players coming up in the UK ranks. His future, and our excitement, is destined to be exhilarating! Wishing Kyle all the very very best for his encounter with Cilic. Go Kyle!
But I add that I can't wait for Andy to recover and return to where he belongs. Never far from my thoughts is Andy.
