Kyle Edmund has won his first ATP title. Did it the hard way. 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 over Gael Monfils in Antwerp final. Edmund is the first British man not named Andy Murray to win an ATP title in 13 years - since Greg Rusedski in 2005 (Newport).

The Kyle Edmund career so far is notably similar in pathway to that of Tim Henman. Henman won first title at 22. Edmund at 23. Henman hit World No.14 at 22. Edmund at 23. Henman first Slam semi at 23. Edmund had just turned 23. Henman made Top 10 just before his 24th bday.

Really pleased for Kyle. He played well today and for the first time he displayed emotions on court which I think really helped him win the second set. His final tears reminded me of Andy's past tears!

So happy for Kyle on his maiden (singles) title! Must admit, I did worry he missed his chance when he couldn't take bp chances deep in the decider, but he found a way :bravo: I so hope he can build on this - it must have been very frustating to lose momentum after his brilliant Aus, but definitely back in a good place now  Oh, I love his trophy - one of the nicest I've seen :trophy:
So pleased for Kyle to get his 1st ATP title. I was following it on LS and it was nail biting in the final TB but he managed to keep it together to beat such an experienced opponent, and one that has caused Andy a fair bit of trouble in the past. Well done, Kyle. :trophy:
Bit late to the party here, but as I had to go out after 2nd set, I had to watch 3rd set on replay later. Just done that. I'm well chuffed for Kyle. A great achievement. If it hadn't been Kyle that Gael was playing, I would have been very pleased to see him back to winning a tour event as he's a really likeable guy, but I thank him for giving Kyle that huge challenge thereby affording him the opportunity to prove (to himself more than anyone) he was equal to it. A hard fought for and well earned win Kyle! A great way to win the maiden title! :bravo:

It was fantastic news about Kyle winning his first title. The BBC news channel, when they did their sportsday headlines, showed Kyle crying as he walked towards Fredrik Rosengren and he (Fredrik) was crying as well. I hope for more success for Kyle.

so pleased for Kyle. I have been mega busy and not able to watch Antwerp until the final which I watched on catchup. It's rare I miss any of Andy or (now) Kyle's matches. Perhaps I jinx them :(
(PS The music in Belgium was truly grim! I thought China were bad with their bizarre and random range of choices but this took the biscuit! )

Unfortunately Kyle did go out early losing to Fernando 4-6 6-3 3-6. Fernando always tricky but to stay up the rankings another loss that he could have done without so points will be dropping next week. Kyle could do with a few wins in Paris, he may still hit a NCH after Paris With Dmitrov dropping his ATP Finals points
EDIT Also Goffin dropping lots as well and could be caught unless he repeats his Paris performance
JAMES4578
25-10-2018, 16:40
Verdasco obviously can be tough but maintaining consistency also seems to be a challenge for Kyle, disappointing but suppose was fairly tight.

VERY late to the party re: Kyle's maiden singles title .... and I actually watched it, well the end of the second set onwards. Absolutely delighted for him.
No surprise I guess that he's gone out early this week. Hopefully will play well in Paris.

Kyle out of Sydney Into, per their twitter account. He has a knee injury.
Oh no! Not Kyle injured as well ... it's starting to feel like the beginning of last year! At least we have Andy back
Kyle gets possibly even a worse AO first round draw than Andy, as he gets Tomas Berdych.
I've just watched Kyle's pre-event presser in Melbourne. Interesting when he said he has always wanted to play doubles with Andy. He doesn't know if that will happen now. Keep the faith Kyle. You never know!
Most of the Brit pre-event pressers are on the AO app.
Just this second started.
First set to Berdych 6-3.
Sallydaisy
14-01-2019, 07:00
Berdy has come back this year playing really well ... Kyle has a mountain to climb now and a lot of points to defend.
The post Murray era is indeed going to be bleak..........
Sallydaisy
14-01-2019, 07:41
Berdy wins 6'3, 6'0, 7'5.
According to Steven on Twitter (https://twitter.com/GBtennis):
That was a horrible draw for Kyle, especially with SF points to defend - he'll drop outside the top 25, though probably still inside the top 30, in a fortnight's time :-(
JAMES4578
14-01-2019, 07:58
was tough draw but disappointing Kyle could not rise to occasion, though of course may be fitness issues. Pity the ranking will now drop quite a bit after last years great run, however Kyle can rise again.
End of last season there were injury/health issues (tonsils) - now this season more injuries...not much going his way recently. Hope things improve for Kyle as the season goes on...

Nothing personal against Kyle but I just don't have belief in him. Probably not fair on him, it's not his fault he has Andy size shoes to fill..........and they're not empty yet!

Sad to announce Fidde is retiring from the tour. You’ve been an integral part of the team over the last year and a half and together we’ve reached a top 15 ranking, a Grand Slam semi-final and won a title in Antwerp in October. I will be forever grateful, enjoy retirement! 👊🏻

Kyle has a tough decision to make now, does he replace Frederik or does he just stick with Mark Hilton. What would you peeps like to see him do?
I would like to see him stick with Mark Hilton for now and wait for the right coach to become available but the question is, who, because the only ones I can think of are Paul Annacone, Bob Brett, Magnus Norman or Sven Groenfeld.
Kyle's playing on the Challenger Tour, this week, and is in Indian Wells. He has a first round bye and then plays either Dominik Koepfer or Tommy Robredo in the second round.

Kyle won 6-3 6-2. He plays wildcard Tsonga next who beat Stebe 6-1 7-6.
I've just watched Kyles's match with Tsonga. While the first set was very close, and Kyle played some good stuff, there is always something missing from Kyle's matches. I fail to be excited when watching them. I will always support him and watch as many of his matches as I can, but that little je ne sais quoi which is missing just makes them a bit sort of workmanlike. Don't even know if that is the right word that I am looking for! Match result Tsonga 7-6, 6-3.
He hasn’t got the “Murray Magic.”
I don’t enjoy watching Kyle. I do think his current ranking flatters him. It’s not his fault, he just lacks that amazing talent of AM, not too mention not seeming to have much of a personality. We have been spoilt.
Can someone tell me where Kyle's match is being shown, please? I can't find it on Prime.

Kyle came back from break down in first, was a bit of a marathon game in closing it out though. Took 2nd by same scoreline and 3rd looks in same vein -up 2-0.

Enjoying watching Kyle.
Me too, plenty of good and bad, some great shots and some poor unforced errors but very enjoyable to see him on centre again

3rd should have been more convincing, went from 5-1 to 5-4 but Kyle served it out the 2nd tiime. A bit of a mixure but generally Edmund stepping up on the key pints-well done! Tougher assignment in 2nd as he takes on Verdasco who also won in straights.

He now has a seed free run to the 2nd week, not convinced he will take it though, definitely needs to improve to get there

They might not be seeded but his R2 (and possible R3 matches) contain some notable banana skins!
R2 is Verdasco who leads their H2H (https://www.atptour.com/en/players/fedex-head-2-head/kyle-edmund-vs-fernando-verdasco/E831/V306) 2-0.
If he makes R3 he faces either Karlovic, H2H 0-0, or Fabbiano who has just beaten Tsitsipas!

Kyle did look better today but the banana skins are definitely lurking.
For a player who has never won a match on grass, I thought Munar played very well.

Kyle could have won this but it looks all over now, going to be level soon

Frustrating, abeit there may be some issue with leg. Kyle was looking fairly impressive not so long ago but now going into 5th set from 2 sets and break up. Hopefully he can get some momentum back!
Why am I not surprised? Just can't warm to his game. So wish Dan had applied himself earlier in his career. Much more engaging player IMHO.

Sadly Edmund goes down 6-4 in 5th,definitely one that got away even if Verdasco found another level and Kyle's physical issue made it problematic.
If Kyle's got a physical problem, he really needs to do something about it.
Kyle got the first set 6 - 1, and leads 4 - 3 in the second, and is now serving. Watching on Prime with NO commies:thumbup:
Kyle beats Harris 6 - 1, 6 - 4. Well done.:GBflag:

easy for Kyle. Let's hope it lasts....
Tsonga match live on Prime now.
Tsonga serving at 3-5 in the third set.
Kyle beats Tsonga 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 - well done:cheer::cheer:
Well done Kyle

Good for Kyle to be winning again.
Kyle is playing now. Has lost the first set 3-6 and is serving a break up at 4-3 in the second set.
…...and lost the third set 3 - 6, and therefore the match :crying::crying:
Shame -he couldn’t take the break points that he carved out and then couldn’t find a first serve at the start of set 3!
Sad, but not really surprising. Kyle has form for bottling it. I am starting to think he is happy, just turning up and winning a few rounds, then taking the money and heading home.
He never really seems to fight for it?

I'm not sure he is happy..... personal life? Moving abroad for financial reasons? He's a difficult person to follow although I do try. :banghead:
He has recurring throat problems - so I guess has immune system problems.

I thought he was fighting pretty hard in that final game. Saved 4 match points.

Agree - and his opponent seems to be on fire this week, lucky loser through to semi-final!
It’s probably me. I just can’t warm to him for some reason.

Personally I think there are still viral/health issues relating to last year. He's not my favourite to watch BUT I don't honestly think he's a 'bottler', he works SO hard off-court. Maybe he needs more help to vary his game to win those vital missing points and/or ensure any lingering viral stuff is properly dealt with?
Would I get into trouble for suggesting Lendl...........!!!
