Daily Record (New York loves Andy Murray: Tennis star goes down a storm across the pond ) - New York loves Andy Murray: Tennis star goes down a storm across the pond

The highly respected USA Today tennis writer Doug Robson has followed Murray’s fortunes closely since he won the US Open junior boys title here in 2004. And while the Scot has always gone down well at Flushing Meadow, Robson has noticed a massive change in the way he is perceived since Wimbledon and the Olympics.

Robson said: “What happened this summer had a big impact on how Murray was viewed over here.

“When US sports fans see someone put everything on the line in pursuit of a *lifetime goal and just fail, it creates a groundswell of support and appreciation.

“It was the same when Andy Roddick lost 16-14 in the final set at Wimbledon to Federer in 2009. He became more popular after that.

“When they saw Murray on court *afterwards making his speech and doing it with so much emotion, they saw what losing meant to him.

“The people appreciated what he had gone through to reach that moment and they genuinely felt for him. He spends time training in the States and has made it clear he embraces everything about the country. All those things help his popularity.”

......

“It is hard to say which event he is more well known for – the Wimbledon loss or the gold medal win. I think it is probably the former because the Olympics was more lost over here in the crush of other sports.

“Yet, those who follow tennis closely love him for the fact he rebounded and then beat Federer so comprehensively in the Olympic final. That’s why a lot of people want him to win here and think he will win here.”

Off the court, Murray prefers to keep a low profile, yet his on-court antics and the abuse he often yells at himself go down well in an “in yer face” city where just about anything goes.

Robson said: “On the court he is quite *demonstrative and is often seen shouting and bawling at himself. New Yorkers love that kind of thing – they really do.”

An interview with: ANDY MURRAY

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. I suppose you could call that a slow start, couldn't you, today?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I didn't start too well. He started off well. He was playing close to the baseline. I have always found that court tricky to play on. I have had a lot of tough matches on it. Yeah, it took me a while to get used to it. I think when the conditions slowed down a bit and started to get a bit darker, that helped me. Yeah, it wasn't the best of starts.

Q. When you're a set and 5‑1 down, do you call on that massive experience that you have now in difficult situations knowing you can get yourself out of it, or do you tell yourself you have to fight to get that clarity?

ANDY MURRAY: I think if you're very angry a set and 5‑1 down you're probably not going to be able to get yourself back in the match. I was more frustrated at the end of the first set when I got myself back into it 4‑3 and then lost serve the next game. But then, yeah, I started thinking a little bit more. He got nervous towards the end of that set once I got one of the breaks back, which helped me. And then, yeah, from 5‑All in the second set I played a great match after that.

Q. What did you do specifically to change things up? Looked like he was afraid to come to the net. Was that part of your game plan after being down 5‑1 in the second?

ANDY MURRAY: Was what a part of my game plan?

Q. Making him coming to the net more. Seemed like he was afraid to be at the baseline and coming up to the net.

ANDY MURRAY: No, I think when you play against guys of his size, keeping the ball low is more important. You don't want to bring them necessarily into the net. They have a big reach up there, and it's not ‑‑ on this court especially, it's not easy to bring guys forward. I just tried to dictate the points from the baseline. I played closer to the baseline. I was more aggressive on his second serve. I started serving better and then gained confidence in my shots from the baseline, because the first set, set and a half I was leaving the ball short and wasn't timing it well. He was able to dictate all of the points.

Q. How would you describe the level of confidence that you have now and its effect in a match like tonight?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I don't know. I don't know. I don't think it was necessarily down to my confidence how I won the second set. I think, you know, he got nervous. That was the main difference. You know, I did start playing better towards the end of the second set. And because I was in it, I started to, you know, to feel that momentum was with me. But I think it wasn't necessarily through my great play in the second set why I got back into it. But after that, you know, I was hitting the ball much better and I felt confident at the end of the match. I was returning well serving well and moved better at the end. It was good to finish like that, obviously.

Q. Hopefully you won't play on it again this year, Andy, but what is it specifically about that court that makes it so tricky?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, compare it with center court and it's a very tight court. It's very small. You know, Arthur Ashe is a massive stadium, but also the run back and the side of the court, it's huge, as well. Normally from one of the ends on Ashe, you know, there is a strong breeze. You know, on that court it swirls more. It's a quicker court. The courts for sure are faster, and, you know, when you switch from one court to the other, one is slower, one is quicker, it can take time to get into a rhythm. I have never played particularly well on that court.

Q. Does it make it difficult as well when you think you're playing on one court and you find out you're not, you're playing on the other one?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I mean, that's not normally a problem. Like I said, I just haven't played particularly well on that court. You know, I mean, it does happen, you know, when you have to change courts. I mean, it's happened to me many times in my career. That doesn't normally bother me at all. It wasn't something I was thinking about, you know, today. It's just I got off to a bad start. That was it.

Q. Obviously we don't know who you're going to be playing in the next round, but if it is Roger, can you describe the differences between your two most recent matches and what you think the keys to this one will be?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, the keys to the match are normally fairly, you know, simple. They don't change that much from match to match, you know. The guy who plays better on the day will probably win. And also who can be more aggressive, you know, and who can play the points on their terms will give themselves the best chance of winning.

Q. How were you able to do that when it came around to the Olympics?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, for the most part, after the Wimbledon final I did a pretty good job of that, as well. I was trying to go for my spots. You know, maybe didn't do it as well in maybe the fourth set as I did in the first few sets. But, yeah, at the Olympics I just went with the same sort of stuff I was doing at the beginning of the Wimbledon final and sustained it for the whole match. That was why I won.

Q. Your turnaround in today's match kind of coincided with the crowd filtering in from the Roddick match into Armstrong. Did you feel that energy from the crowd, as well, coming in?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it definitely got much, much louder and felt, you know, more like the quarterfinals of a slam. You know, the crowd was almost full by the end of it. You know, I mean, I'm sure all players enjoy playing in front of a big, big crowd. You know, that's not a reason to get off to a bad start, though. You know, you have to be able to create your own atmosphere when you're on the court. But I did play better when the crowd filled up.

Q. Knowing that you have beaten Roger now, what difference can that make mentally?

ANDY MURRAY: You know, I have played him loads of times. You know, big matches, I guess you could call them. Obviously, in the slams it's big; Olympics final; I played him in the finals of Masters Series a few times. Yeah, I have experience of playing against him. I've played him close to 20 times now. You know, I have learnt a lot from all of those matches. You know, hopefully I will use that experience well on Saturday. Tomas Berdych is a great player, as well. Let's show him some respect, too.

Q. What would that match depend on if you were to play Tomas? What would be the keys to that one?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I mean, he's a huge, huge hitter of the ball. You know, even if you want to dictate points and be aggressive, he can take that away from you because he's such a powerful guy. You need to be smart against him. You need to use good variation and try not and give him the same ball over and over, because he likes that. You know, that's the difference. Against Roger, Roger himself has a lot of variety, so it doesn't necessarily work against him if you use loads. But I think against since someone like Tomas that's important.

Q. You mentioned 20 times against Roger. Does the fact you have beaten him in a final now, or a Masters, does that change the dynamic in your own mind about the two of you? You have actually won a big one.

ANDY MURRAY: No, I mean, the thing is, I mean, I have played him so many times, and obviously winning the Olympics, whether it was against him or against any other player, would have been a big, big win for me. I won against Rafa in semis of a slam before and lost to him in the semis of slams after that. It purely depends how you play on the day. I think having played in a Wimbledon final and obviously, you know, winning an Olympics final has given me even more experience. I felt a lot better going to the final of the Olympics than I did going to the Wimbledon final. So, you know, I'm still learning and improving with playing those big matches.

Q. How much of a difference would you say Ivan has made to your game at this point and to your mental approach to things?

ANDY MURRAY: How do you want me to describe it?

Q. To describe the difference he's made.

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, well, he's made a big difference. You know, I have started to understand certain things. You know, going into Grand Slams, started to understand certain things better and how to go about my business not just on the court but off it, as well. You know, to conserve energy, to go into the matches with the right mindset and attitude ‑ even though, you know, tonight probably doing a great job of that. Hopefully do a better job of that in the next round. But, yeah, I think I have improved since I started working with him. I think I'm playing better tennis and understanding how best to play the big points in, you know, the important matches.

Q. Any reason to expect you won't bring that calm into the next couple of matches if you have that opportunity, based on the summer you have had?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I mean, you never know exactly what's going to happen in the next couple of days. But I would hope that, you know, going into the thing match on Saturday, win or lose, I'll be in a good place mentally. I'll fight from the first point to the last. You know, if I do that, I'll give myself a shot. But I can't afford to start like I did tonight, that's for sure.

Q. How long are your debriefs with Lendl after a match and your chats pre‑match? He's stoney faced sitting in your box. What are the chats like?

ANDY MURRAY: Fairly brief. I mean, I mean, after the matches we'll speak for, you know, five minutes or so before the matches. We'll speak tomorrow about the match on Saturday, and then we will speak again about it before the match on the Saturday morning or so. But normally we'd have longer chats after the tournament is done. You know, it's not worth having long conversations that can be tiring and can get overcomplicated during the event. You just need to talk about the things that didn't go so well tonight, why I started like I did, and then what worked well at the end and how I can build on that going into the next round.

Q. Is the heat a factor for you here when you get those afternoon times? You mentioned Armstrong; you don't like it out there. Is the heat more intense out there, as well?

ANDY MURRAY: It's not that I don't like it. I just haven't played that well in it. I'm just being honest. I've struggled on that court before. You know, I'm not saying I don't like the court. It's got a lot of history, that court. Some great matches have been played on that court. It's not that I don't like the court. You know, the heat changes the way the court plays. Definitely bounces high when it's hot here. Yeah, when you maybe go from a night match where it's cool and low bouncing to then playing in the day, that can take a bit of time to get used to. So, you know, that's the thing that's challenging about the conditions here.

Not very sportsmanlike though clearly he is disappointed. I think many players would have said conditions were same, he adapted better, well done... but he basically says he lost because of the wind as his ball toss is very high so suffered more and Andy's game is more adaptable in these conditions.

An interview with: ANDY MURRAY
Saturday, September 8, 2012

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Have you ever played in conditions quite that strange?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I mean, it's probably the toughest I have played in. I played Rafa in the final of Indian Wells once, and that was also not much fun. Played in Vegas once as well when it was really, really windy. For such a long period, you know, it was pretty much four hours, the match, and it was brutal. There was a few games in the fourth set where it calmed down a little bit, but very, very tough conditions to play in.

Q. Have you ever had a bag blow off a chair and go into the court like that?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, have had that happen. I'm surprised it didn't happen more. It was so, so windy on the court. Yeah, that's happened before.

Q. When you got your teeth into the match and got control, were there times when it did become fun to be in those conditions?

ANDY MURRAY: You can't really sort of allow yourself to enjoy it because anything can happen. The match turns around so quickly. He serve‑volleyed a couple times, came to the net more, and played a couple of good points. All of a sudden, you know, you're back tied at 3‑All when you've been in total control for two hours of the match. You can't allow yourself to lose focus. If you do, it can get away from you quickly.

Q. Can you cast your mind back four years and say how different you feel getting to the final this time to when you got to the final then?

ANDY MURRAY: I'm obviously a lot more mature. I have had a lot more experience in these sort of situations, you know, than obviously then. It was my first slam final. It all came round very quick. After playing Rafa and going from Armstrong to Ashe and then, you know, playing the next day, it seemed to go by very, very quickly. You know, I hope I deal with it better tomorrow.

Q. It was a long match. Does it feel physically any harder because you're having to adjust maybe to the ball that...

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's different. You know, mentally it's tiring playing in those conditions for so long, you know, for the reasons that I explained. Physically in some ways it can be easier, but, you know, from one of the ends you can't control the points. You know, you can't hit through a wind that's as strong as that, so you have to do a lot of the running from one of the sides. So you need to make sure that when you're on the good end that you're sort of dictating. I mean, physically it was not the most tiring match I have played, but it was hard for other reasons, as well.

Q. With the strong likelihood that the second semifinal won't get completed today and your match for the final will be on Monday, how much will that day off mean to you after this tough match today?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, obviously we have to wait and see what happens tonight. You know, I have been in the position before when I played in the final where, you know, I didn't get the day off and, you know, maybe it hurt me a little bit. You know, Novak and David are very, very experienced, so, you know, I'm sure they will deal with the situation better than I did back then anyway. But, yeah, it would be nice to get a rest tomorrow and also, you know, to be able to practice and get your rhythm back. Because, you know, some of the shots I was playing out there today I certainly won't be playing if it comes down.

Q. When you were a kid back in Scotland, I know you spent a lot of your time indoors...

SIR SEAN CONNERY: Excuse me for interrupting, but I just wanted to make a point. Where's Alex? (Applause.) I don't know where your mother is. There she is.

ANDY MURRAY: Thank you very much for coming. Are you going to be around tomorrow?

SIR SEAN CONNERY: Come on, Judy. Judy, Judy, Judy.

ANDY MURRAY: You smell of wine. (Laughter.)

JUDY MURRAY: He made me have wine. He's just been telling me that Scotland invented the world.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON: Been coming here the last three years to New York, and I explained how Scotland invented the world; today we invented the wind. (Laughter.)

SIR SEAN CONNERY: Today they conquered the world.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON: Very good. Fantastic.

ANDY MURRAY: See you after the match tomorrow.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON: Continue your interview.

Q. I was wondering, when you were a kid in Scotland you were indoors a lot, but did you ever have to sort of practice in gales like that?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I did practice in tough conditions, because obviously it can get incredibly windy, though. But nothing like it was today, that's for sure. Looks like they just suspended that match, as well.

Q. What does it feel like to have those sorts of guys come and watch you?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's great. You know, that's the first time I've met Sir Alex and first time I met Sir Sean, as well. So, yeah, that's obviously nice, you know, to have their support. Hopefully they'll be back for the final, as well.

Q. Did you feel you were robbed of a point when your hat blew off?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I was actually just saying ‑‑ I said to Tomas, you know, the referee was going to give me the point. I went up to the umpire and up to Tomas and I said, Are you sure 100% sure it came off ‑‑ obviously I didn't know. I knew my hat had come off and then I looked 'round, but I didn't know whether the ball has bounced twice or not. I asked him if he was 100% sure, and if he was I would replay the point. He said he was sure. We saw on the replay, and I think it looked like it came off almost as I hit the ball.

Q. All things considering, the weather, Olympic champion, Wimbledon final, now the US Open final, it's been a heck of a two months.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's been great. You know, obviously at the beginning of this tournament as well I haven't actually played great tennis so far. So some of the matches just found a way to get through them. And, yeah, to be in the final and get the chance to play for a Grand Slam is great. You know, the year obviously is not over yet, but this is, you know, probably the last big match I will play this year. Looking forward to it.

Q. How much do you feel the Olympic win will help here going into the final?

ANDY MURRAY: I think all experiences like that help. You know, in some ways maybe took a bit of pressure off me, you know, but I do think that even having played here and lost in the final, that is also, you know, a good experience to have gone through. You know, having to deal with all this sort of different weather conditions and matches getting suspended. Obviously now I will have a day off. You know, mentally you're preparing to play Saturday/Sunday. I've had quite a lot of breaks during this tournament as well, so it has been hard to stay in a rhythm a little bit. Yeah, all of those big matches and all of the slams and Olympics and stuff, they all help in the long run.

Q. In a way, do you think winning a big tournament like that sort of reinforces to you that you're doing the right thing, that you're going in the right direction?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. I think, you know, my results in the slams over the last couple of years have been very good. And obviously this year in the major tournaments, you know, along with the Olympics, it's been my best year. Never made two Grand Slam finals in a year, so that's obviously a good sign that I'm playing better and still learning. And the Olympics was the biggest win of my career by far. You know, it meant a lot to me, too. Whatever happens in the final, it's been a great year. But, you know, all I want to make sure I do in the final is that I give 110%. I know how hard these opportunities are to come by, and, you know, I will give it everything.

......Andy's presser continued.

Q. You obviously don't know who you're going to play yet, but can you just talk a little bit about either Novak or David? It's been postponed, by the way.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, Novak, you would think now ‑‑ I'm sure the weather will be a lot calmer tomorrow. Probably from that position still he's probably the favorite to win. David makes it very, very hard. He makes it very physical. He's in great shape. He's playing the best tennis of his career this year.I have played him many times, and, you know, unbelievably tough match with him at Wimbledon. I lost to him at the French Open; the previous year I played him in the Aussie Open, as well. That was also a brutal match. It was very, very tough. You know, both guys are going to be very, very tough to play.

Q. Getting back to your hat, you just couldn't keep it on and decided just to ditch it?

ANDY MURRAY: If it happened the second time I would have lost the point. Obviously I got broken. I should have ‑‑ not should have ‑‑ but, you know, I won the point with the dropshot because the hat came off. I then obviously had to replay the point and got broken the next point, so, you know, I didn't want to take the chance of that happening again and losing the point. It would have been stupid.

Q. If you're playing Novak, obviously there is the history of another Grand Slam final and a very tight semifinal. What would it like to play him again in another final?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I handled a big match against him well in Australia this year. It was a great match. I think both of us played very well. It came down to a couple of points. You know, I know how much the Olympics meant to all of the players, and winning against him in the Olympic semifinal, you know, was a big win for me. I know how tough it is to beat the top, top players in big matches. You know, I have had, yeah, some tough losses against him, but also had some big highs against him, as well. So obviously will be an unbelievably tough match. I mean, he moves very well on the hard courts. He's a top, top player, one of the best players that's played. You know, the year he had last year is incredible. If it is him, I know it's going to be very, very, very, very tough match.

Q. Was there any attempting conversation to talk to the four of you of whether you'd split courts today?

ANDY MURRAY: No. I mean, we kinda got told a little bit, but, they said it was going to start raining around 6:30. But because it was so windy, you know, they didn't know exactly how long it was going to take for that storm to come. You know, yeah, I mean they said when it came basically that was the day done, so I was glad that I was going to be able to get my match in. But, yeah, we were told they were planning on canceling the women's final first before they would have split the courts. They were going to try to get the two men's semis played today.

Q. Since they discussed that with you, do you think it was not the best decision then to not put you on simultaneously, the two semis?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I think the last time it happened ‑‑ the reason they stopped is for a tornado. I don't think it's for the rain.

Q. Did they tell you at 6:30, that was going to be the day, do you think they should have put both semis on at the same time?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I was in that position, you know, a few years ago, and that was, yeah, a tough situation to be in obviously. You know, there is people that are there to make those decisions, so you'd obviously need to ask them the reasons behind that. But, you know, who knows? Who knows what the right decision was? You know, I'm just glad that I was the first match today and got it done. It's been a long day today. I'm just happy I'm through.

Q. Tomas said maybe, you know, it wasn't the best match because of the conditions and maybe there should be a rule like with rain that if it gets to a certain point you don't play.

ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I mean, there are certain rules in tennis that, you know, were broken many times today. Took us a long time to hit serves. It was sometimes two minutes between points because it was taking so long for us to throw the ball up and stuff. You know, maybe those rules should be enforced a little bit or not play the matches. But, you know, I don't know if they stop in other sports for a lot of wind. When there is a tornado around then that's pretty serious. Yeah, I think that's the right time to stop. You know, there is a skill to playing in the wind. I have never played in it when it's been that bad, but, you know, people like to watch professionals struggle when they're in tough conditions. (Laughter.) You know, Ivan always says he likes watching the golfers when it's blowing really hard, because it makes them hit bad shots and makes them feel a lot better. I think people enjoy watch professionals playing in tough conditions.

Q. So many people want this for you, want you to win a final. It's an absurd question, but can you tell us how much it sits with you and how much you want this thing to finally break through?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, I obviously ‑‑ it's the last thing that I really want to achieve in my career, so that's why it's obviously very important for me. You know, like I said, winning the Olympics did, for me, take a bit of the pressure off. I did feel a lot better after that. Maybe had less doubts about myself and my place in the game just now. But, yeah, winning a major is the last thing that I really want to do. Yeah, it means a lot to me. You saw obviously at Wimbledon how much that meant to me. You know, it's obviously not easy to lose another slam final, so I hope this one is a different story.

Federer has been the Big Apple’s box-office draw for a decade but, given his absence at the business end of this tournament, that billing has fallen with glorious improbability to Murray.

The Scot has always identified the US Open as his favourite tournament, such is his natural preference for its Budweiser-and-pretzel culture above the reverential hush of Centre Court at Wimbledon. And it appears at last that this love affair is reciprocated.

Q. You played Andy in two pretty big occasions this year with different outcomes both times. What were the differences in the two matches? What do you remember most about that Australian Open five‑setter?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I remember that match going five sets and the distance. It was difficult, you know, in both a physical and mental way. A lot of long rallies, and you couldn't really say who was going to win that match up to the last point. Most of our matches that we played against each other were very close, and only small margins decide the winner. That's something that is expected in a way, because we have similar games. You know, we are big rivals and we have been in top of the men's game for a long time, so we know each other really well. The last match he has won in Olympic Games. Also close one. But it's a different surface, obviously. You know, with the different surface different tactics apply. So we'll see. You know, tomorrow I guess there is no clear favorite.

Q. What are your impressions of the evolution of Andy's game and the effect of Ivan Lendl on him?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I think he's going for the shots more than he used to. That's something that I guess he was looking for. I don't know if it's with Ivan's help or not, but he's definitely improved in that part of the game. Mentally I think he is more aggressive into the court right now. Probably that's the only thing that he was missing, you know, in his game. Because he's one of the most complete players in the world right now. In the last couple of years he was at the top of the men's game. This is his fifth Grand Slam final. We all knew that he's definitely a contender to win a Grand Slam title, you know, any year in last five years. But, you know, it just wasn't to be in the last four for him. Tomorrow I guess he's going to be very motivated to win the title. But me too. Also I will try to win that match. (Smiling.)

The match may have finished too late for some of the daily papers but the online community is buzzing with news.

The USO website has a video up already here:
http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/interviews/2012-09-10/201209101347334521592.html

The BBC has a very good report (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/19539257)of the match and also a sequence of great photos (see one below).

Also on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/18726985) "How Andy Murray did it his way".

This is an extract from Tom Fordyce's blog (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/19553665).
"Andy Murray's nerve-mangling, history-making US Open triumph over Novak Djokovic was many things: one of the great finals of the modern era, a late-night thriller from the city that never sleeps, a breath-taking demonstration of physical strength and mental fortitude. It was also the perfect bookend to a few months that British sport can scarcely believe and will never forget."

A very happy Andy Murray with trophy .....

Andy's win is the headline news on the BBC, above the coach crash and the Annecy incident. I have had the news on most of the morning and they have so far had a long interview with Hutchins, one with Miles McClagen, one with Andrew Castle. I guess there will be many more to come.

I'm completely shattered after last night, but not complaining :) But I may have to post the newspaper articles slowly bit by bit.

An interview with: ANDY MURRAY

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. First of all, congratulations. From my perspective, it looked like you played like a man just possessed out there. Just talk about the fight that you had and the feeling of having this trophy in front of you.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, it was obviously a very tough match. You know, mentally, the last three, four days have been pretty tiring. You know, when the conditions have been like they have been, you need to focus so hard, you know, on almost every shot because, you know, the ball is very hard to control. So mentally it was challenging, you know, aside from it being, you know, a slam final and having not won one before, playing against Novak who, you know, on this surface is ‑‑ I mean, in the slams I don't think he's lost for, you know, a couple of years. So it was an incredibly tough match, and, yeah, obviously it felt great at the end. "Relief" is probably the best word I would use to, you know, describe how I'm feeling just now. Yeah, very, very happy that I managed to come through because if I had lost this one from two sets up, that would have been a tough one to take.

Q. You just said "relief." Is there a moment where you thought, "exultation" too?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't know what that means. (Laughter.)

Q. Thrilled, you know, excitement.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. I mean, obviously you're feeling a lot of things. You know, like I was obviously very emotional. You know, I cried, you know, a little bit on the court. You're not sad; you're incredibly happy. You're in a little bit of disbelief because when I have been in that position many times before and not won, you do think, you know, Is it ever going to happen? Then when it finally does, you just ‑‑ yeah, you're obviously very, very excited. But, yeah, mainly relieved to have got over that, that last hurdle.

Q. For 76 years British players have carried a millstone around their neck. What is it like to have finally done it?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, when you're on the court, you don't necessarily feel it, but I know when I was serving for the match, there's a sense of how, you know, how big a moment that is in British tennis history really. So, you know, that obviously adds to it. I know more than most, you know, British players, I have been asked about it many times when I got close to winning Grand Slams before. I get asked about it more and more even after I won the Olympics. I still got asked, When are you going to win a Grand Slam? So, yeah, it's great to have finally done it, and I said in one of the interviews after the match, I hope now, you know, it inspires some kids to play tennis and also takes away the notion that British tennis players choke or don't win or it's not a good sport. You know, it's in a very good place in the UK right now. Obviously Laura has done very well. The Olympics was great for us. Liam Broady was in the final here in the juniors. It's in a good place. I hope it stays that way.

Q. When Novak took that timeout, what was going through your mind? And how did you keep focused on doing the job?

ANDY MURRAY: Actually, I felt fine after I got that break to serve for it at 5‑2. I was still obviously very nervous around sort of 3‑2, 4‑2. You still are a long way from the finish line. When the conditions are like that, really anything can happen. You know, I got myself up after a minute or so of sitting down and just went to the back of the court and thought, you know, Where are you going to serve, first point? Once I got that first point, I settled down and felt fine. I have served matches very well my whole career. I have never really had a problem with it. Yeah, today was the same.

Q. How tough was it at the start of the fifth set when he had come back? Did the other finals go through your mind at all?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I wasn't thinking about the other finals. I was thinking a bit more about what happened the last couple of sets and the situation I kind of found myself in after I guess it was nearly four hours of play by that stage. I went to the toilet after the fourth set and just, you know, had a think and, you know, said, It's just one more set. Give everything. You don't want to come off this court with any regrets. Don't get too down on yourself. Just try and fight. I got a bit fortunate to get the break at the beginning of the set, and that helped. I got a net cord on the slice backhand. Then I settled down a bit after that.

Q. I'm sure you're going to be asked this question a lot: Can you give us a sense how different this was to winning the gold medal in the Olympics? One, a huge victory for the country; the other, a huge victory for you, vindication. How do you compare and contrast them a bit?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's definitely different. You know, at the Olympics there was so much going on, you know, with all of the other sports and everyone was doing really well. There was a lot of momentum and stuff. You know, I had also the mixed doubles to focus on a bit. When you know you're guaranteed a couple of silver medals, that also maybe helped me a little bit going into the final there. Whereas here, you know, I was still doubting myself right up to a few minutes before you go on to play the match. You're thinking, you know, Are you going to be able to do this? This is going to be tough. The match against him always is going to hurt, you know, as well. Physically it's challenging. Yeah, it's something I have never done before. I have been in this position many times and not managed to get through. So there is a lot of things you're thinking about before you go out on the court. I am just so relieved, like I said, to finally have got through and can put this one behind me and hopefully win more.

Q. What are your thoughts now on just how difficult the personal road has been for you to get to this first Grand Slam championship?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's been tough because, you know, I have lost a lot of tight matches and semifinals and lost comfortably in my first few slam finals, as well. I mean, obviously not everyone in here sees all of the stuff that goes on away from the court in terms of the training that you do and, you know, I guess the physical sort of suffering, the stuff you put your body through on a weekly basis to try and prepare for these moments so you can play for four‑and‑a‑half hours at a high intensity. That's what's tough. I mean, my life is still very, very good. Still very fortunate to be able to do this for a living. But, you know, when you get so close to achieving really my last goal I had left to achieve in tennis in winning a Grand Slam, and when you have been there many times and not done it, it is easy to doubt yourself. You know, I'm just, like I say, glad I managed to finally do it. Happy I was able to do it for all the guys I work with, as well, because they have been with me pretty much from the start and seen all of those things that go on away from the court.

Q. How old were you when you first felt that weight of, you know, the British history? Secondly, when it was slipping away a bit, two sets to Love lead, did you get scared and think, Oh, my God, I'm going to let this slip away from me?

ANDY MURRAY: I didn't feel scared, but it's something that you do ‑‑ like I said, at the end of the fourth set, you are thinking, What's gone on here the last couple of sets? What can I do to try and change it? Obviously when you're playing against someone like Novak who he has come back in a lot of matches, especially here, and he is in very good shape, you're going to have to match him right up until the end. So, yeah, even during the match you're still questioning yourself a bit and you're still doubting yourself a little bit. Yeah, I just managed to stay tough enough today and get through.

Q. How old were you when you first felt that weight?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I don't know exactly. I mean, probably when I lost in the Aussie Open final, that may be the first time really, you know, I was starting to feel like, you know, something that kind of everyone was maybe expecting to happen. But I knew deep down how tough it was to do it because of the people you were competing against. So I started to question whether I was going to be able to do it, you know, around that age. But I always worked hard and tried to do all the right things. I'm glad it finally happened.

Q. You have obviously had this fabulous tournament, this fabulous summer, but looking back on the process you just talked about, you may have shared this before, but what was the toughest stretch, the toughest moment or when you had the most doubt?

ANDY MURRAY: After I lost to Novak in Australia last year, I wasn't feeling good at all for pretty much into the clay court season. So that was a good three‑month stretch, three‑, four‑month stretch where I really struggled with my game. I struggled, you know, for motivation. I lost and I think I lost in the first round of Indian Wells and Miami. You know, I really wasn't playing well, wasn't enjoying it so much, and I stopped working with Alex Corretja around that time, as well. That was also hard. I mean, since I come on the tour, that was probably the hardest part.

Q. Having four different winners this year in the slams and having you won the Olympics and being in the final of Wimbledon, do you consider yourself the most successful player of the year until now, more or less? Another question: I remember you didn't like to play in wind. You told us many, many times. Did you attend a navigation college in South Hampton to improve your attitude towards playing in the wind?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I didn't. I don't think I have had the best year on the tour, no. I think the last few months have been great for me, but, you know, there is more to the tennis tour than just the Grand Slams. You know, Novak has played great tennis in most of the Masters Series, as well. Roger has got himself back to No. 1. You know, I think it is important to remember the tennis season. It starts in January, finishes in November, there is four slams, but there is also many other tournaments to get to No. 1 in the world, which I think if you're No. 1 you deserve to be the player of the year. You can't just rely on only playing the Grand Slams. You need to do well at the other events, as well. I haven't done as well as I have needed to get to No. 1 in the world. I would say Novak or Roger would be the best players this year. But there is still a few months left. And, no, I didn't do the South Hampton thing.

Q. There is a term in American sports, 'act like you've been there before. Is this utter fatigue you're going through? You appear as if you're coming in here after a big loss, not like the culmination ‑‑ there is the first smile. That's what I'm looking for. You showed so much personality after the loss in Wimbledon and winning the Olympics. Emotionally, what level of euphoria are you going through now that you have this huge accomplishment behind you as opposed to in front of you?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's hard to describe because I'm thinking a lot just now. I'm thinking a lot about a lot of different things. I have obviously just seen the guys that I work with, I saw my girlfriend, my mom, you know, all those people. I think everyone is just in a little bit of shock, to be honest, that it's kind of happened. I see my mom after I have lost in slam finals and stuff, and she's been really upset. Everyone is really, really happy, but...

Q. This would be a good time to show it.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. (Laughter.) Exactly. I think we're sort of learning from Lendl a little bit. (Laughter.)

Q. Learn the on‑the‑court stuff, not the off.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. He doesn't smile a whole lot. (Laughter.) Yeah, it's hard to explain. It's been a long, long journey to this point. So I'm just ‑‑ I don't know. I don't know if it's disbelief or whatever. I'm very, very happy on the inside. I'm sorry if I'm not showing it as you would like.

Q. Back to 1936 for a minute. I have been in this room many, many times. I have heard the topic, the drought brought up with Tim Henman many times and with you. It's a topic you have had to endure. With this profession comes a ton of pressure. How much pressure has it been, the hopes Britain has had upon you? And it was that way with Tim before and others. Talk about that. And also how great a relief is it to finally have shed that?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I did get asked about that all of the time for the last few years. Most press conferences I would do I would get asked a question along those sort of lines, and it does build pressure a little bit. You try not to think about it much when you're playing, but like I said, when I was serving for the match, it's something that you ‑‑ you know, I realized how important that moment was, and, you know, for British tennis or British sport. It's something that hasn't happened for a long time obviously in our country. And, yeah, I'm obviously proud that I managed to, you know, to achieve it, and, yeah, I don't have to get asked that stupid question again. (Laughter.)

Q. As a follow‑up, I want to ask: Did the Olympic victory help, too? A stepping stone?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think even after Wimbledon this year, I felt much better after losing that match than I had after other slams. The support I had afterwards was something I hadn't really experienced before. That also helped me to get over it quickly. The Olympics was ‑‑ I mean, it was obviously huge for me. It was the biggest week of my life, for sure. But still today, you know, before the match, when I was sitting in the locker room beforehand, like I say, there are still doubts. You're still thinking, If I lose this one, you know, no one's ever lost their first five finals. You know, I just didn't really want to be that person. It was good to win.

Q. You talked about feeling different going into the Olympic final after Wimbledon. Going into this US Open final, did it feel different? If so, how?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, going into the Olympic final I felt different than going into the Wimbledon final. I think I dealt with both situations fairly well. I wasn't too nervous. But like I say, today I was very nervous before the match. You know, like I say, I was doubting myself a bit. I mean, I don't know whether winning the Olympics helped me today or not, but, you know, I don't think the Olympics victory, when I got into the fifth set there, that wasn't something I was thinking about, you know, at all.

Q. But your mentality going in. You said the mentality going in after Wimbledon...

ANDY MURRAY: No, I felt ‑‑ coming to this tournament I felt much better than I had done maybe going into slams in the past. I felt more comfortable with myself. But today when you're playing for a Grand Slam and it's something I haven't done before, my mentality wasn't, Well, I won the Olympics, so today is going to be a breeze and I'm going to deal with the situation really well. You know, I was very nervous in a couple of hours leading up to the match.

Q. The fact you had to fight so hard, the quarters, the semis, beating three tough opponents in a row, and then Novak, does that make the win any more sweet?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think ‑‑ well, I mean, however I got my first slam after the losses I have had, it was going to feel great. But this tournament, I didn't really feel like I played my best. I felt like, you know, the matches maybe sometimes because of the conditions, you just have to try and find a way and get through. But, yeah, I mean, the final today, I think it meant more to me winning it in four‑and‑a‑half hours and the five‑set match and having been up two sets to nothing and him coming back, you know, will have meant more to me because of that.

Q. You have ticked off various things obviously with two massive wins. Would becoming world No. 1 about be the next target in your only personal performance?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, all players, once you get near to the top of the game, that's one of the goals is to try and get to the world No. 1. I can't say this year it's necessarily possible for me to do it because I didn't have a particularly good clay court season and I didn't do well in the Masters Series in Cincinnati and Montreal and also in Indian Wells. I had too many losses early in those tournaments. But that is the next step. To do that, you need to be consistent throughout the whole year. That's something that Novak and Roger and Rafa have done incredibly well the last few years. He made it very, very difficult for guys to get up there. I'm definitely going to try. It's something I'd love to do, to get to No. 1. It's a very tough thing to do.

Q. Other than the fan support that you get at Wimbledon and the Olympics, have you ever had this much support on the road? And were you prepared for Djokovic perhaps to be the fan favorite tonight?

ANDY MURRAY: I always had very good support in New York since I came the first time. I mean, I was 18 at the time when I played the seniors here the first time. I always had really good support. Tonight I didn't ‑‑you know, I had no real expectations of who they would rather win, you know, but I think they wanted to see a great match. You know, they wanted to see a long match. At the start, they were supporting us fairly equally. Then the third and fourth sets they seemed to be going for him a bit more. Then the beginning of the fifth, you know, the support was back with me. It was, yeah, it was just quite up and down. I think they have obviously seen a lot of tennis here. They wanted to see a great match. Yeah, the support at the end and the atmosphere we got to play in tonight was incredible.

Q. Since you're dreaming about winning your Grand Slam, did you make any promise to yourself what happened if I won a Grand Slam? Can you share it? When you started the coach‑athlete's relationship, did you make a promise to Ivan if I win a Grand Slam...

ANDY MURRAY: No. Knowing him, you know, after we will have a chat about the match tonight and then we will be discussing, unfortunately, the practice schedule for the next few weeks before the tournaments in China. (Laughter.) But, I mean, in the past before some of the slams, like in Australia and stuff, I had spoken to the guys I worked with and said, you know, If I win, we will do this. One of them was jumping out of a plane. One of them was everyone had to shave their heads. But, yeah, for this one, we had none, unfortunately.

Q. The late great Fred Perry was a great earthy guy; didn't exactly come through in a traditional British way. If you could be magically sitting down with him in a back room over here chatting for a moment or two, what would you say to him and what do you think he'd say to you?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, obviously I don't know. I never got the chance to meet him. But it would have been nice to have spoken to someone from Britain that had, you know, won major tournaments before. That definitely would have helped me if I would have got the chance. But, you know, I used to wear his clothing line when I was growing up. Yeah, I mean, I'm sure he's smiling from up there that someone has finally managed to do it from Britain. Yeah, I'm very, very happy, and I just hope it's not a long, long way ‑‑ I hope I can see another British player in my lifetime win a Grand Slam.

Q. You never heard about BBC radio? He was on the radio. That was before your time?

ANDY MURRAY: I think so, or I may have been a very young kid. But I haven't heard him on the radio.

Q. Talking about smiles, there was a moment when you and Ivan Lendl were able to smile together after the match. Did he tell you anything that you can tell us after this match?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I saw all of the guys in the locker room afterwards, and, yeah, I saw him. He just said, you know, I'm proud of you; well done. We had a hug. Then someone sprayed champagne all down my back and over him. I think it was Danny. That kind of ended that. He started swearing. (Laughter.) Yeah, and that was that.

Q. During the past two weeks I don't know if anyone worked harder than you on the practice courts. What drives you to work so hard?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, moments like this, I think. That's why we do it. It's why we play the game and put all the work in off the court. You know, if I hadn't trained hard I wouldn't have been able to last. My match a couple of days ago was four hours; today it was four and a half hours. So that's really what it's for, for moments like this. Sometimes you question whether it's all worth it ‑ and I have done that a few times ‑ but after the summer that I have had, you realize that it is worth it. There's only one way to get where you want to be, and that's with hard work and dedication.

Q. You talked about the doubts that you have had. What have you proved to yourself today?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I proved that, you know, I can win the Grand Slams. I proved that I can last four‑and‑a‑half hours and come out on top against, you know, one of the strongest guys physically that tennis had probably seen especially on this surface. So they would probably be the things that I would say I have learned tonight. But, you know, to not doubt myself physically and mentally from now on. You know, I'm sure that would have a positive impact in the future.

Q. The easy play for us is to say that Ivan was a game changer for you. Was he? If so, how? What do you think was the key?

ANDY MURRAY: I think he definitely helped, that's for sure. I mean, it's hard to say in terms of a percentage how much difference he will have made. There was a lot of people that around the middle part of this year didn't think that it was working well and I wasn't learning from him that it wasn't just, you know, a good situation. But, you know, I have enjoyed working with him. I have listened to him a lot. You know, he's definitely, definitely helped. Having him in your corner for any player would be a big bonus. Not many guys have won as much as he did want to go into coaching or want to be around tennis. I think because he had such a long break after he finished, you know, he wanted to get back into it. I think he's enjoying it. You know, he was obviously one of the most successful tennis players ever. You know, I'm sure it gave a little boost to his ego tonight, as well, that I won today, you know, after just sort of nine months with him. (Laughter.) It's been great so far, and I hope we can keep working well together.

Q. Is there a certain message he gave you, Be more aggressive? Toughness? What?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think it was the thing just to try to keep going for my shots and giving 110%, you know, not leave anything out there on the court, because, you know, he knows how hard Grand Slams are to come by and how hard you need to work to give yourself a chance to win them. You don't want to, you know, step off the court not doing yourself justice. I felt maybe couple years ago in Australia a couple of years ago when I played Novak in the final there I didn't necessarily do, and that hurt me a lot. That's probably why I struggled for a few months afterwards. If I had lost tonight it would have hurt a lot, but I would have known I would have tried my best and given it 110%. That's what he asks of me. If I do that, then he's happy.

Q. You spoke a lot about the enormous relief you're feeling at the moment. How do you think this might change you either as a person or in the way you do business on the court?

ANDY MURRAY: I hope it doesn't change me as a person. That would be a bad thing. I think on the court, you know, hopefully if I get into situations like this in the future I won't be having all the doubts that I was having before the match today. I will maybe just be a little more confident than I was before this tournament. That's actually it. You know, I hope it doesn't change too much. You know, I'm still gonna going to have all the same friends and family and stay in the same house and train in the same places. Nothing much is going to change in that respect. There may be a few more busy press conferences now and a little bit more demands on my time, but that's part of the job and that's worth it.

Q. Getting married?

ANDY MURRAY: Justin's told me all about married life, and he said it's not all that...

Q. It's way tougher.

ANDY MURRAY: No. Well, I don't have any plans for it just now.

Q. Yesterday Victoria Azarenka said after losing to Serena that she felt blessed to play in the era of Serena Williams, a woman who has beaten her 10 out of 11 times. She said the reason she felt blessed was because it drove her to raise her level of tennis beyond what she was otherwise. You are playing in an era of greatness as well. There has been conversation about you breaking into the strata of Roger and Rafa and Novak. Novak said he felt privileged to play in this era. Talk about that and what it means to do what you have had to do to crack into what you have done tonight?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I have always said that, you know, playing against these guys makes you much better. When you see physically how strong someone like Rafa is, I played him many times, you know, that drives you. You see also how hard he works. That makes you realize what you have to do nowadays, I think, to get to the top of the game and to compete with those guys. You know, I obviously played Roger many times, as well. You know, just the way that he plays, the consistency that he's shown over the last whatever, seven, eight, nine, ten years, I think it's going to be tough to see that again. Obviously Novak, the last few years, you know, you see the way he moves around the court. He took things I think especially on a hard court to a new level. Yeah, I'm very happy to be part of this era in tennis. I think everyone probably in here would agree it's one of the best ever. I think playing against them has made me improve so much. You know, I always said that maybe if I played another era maybe I would have won more, but I wouldn't have been as good a tennis player. I think that's how you should be judged at the end of your career, not just on how much you're winning but on the people you're competing against and how good a player you actually were. Those guys are some of the best of all time.

Q. A few minutes ago you spoke of this being a long journey. What gives you the most satisfaction now of what you have overcome during that journey?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I mean, I think probably, I mean, proving to myself that I could do it. Like I said, there are times where you don't really think ‑‑ you know, I'm sure there are a lot of people that thought ‑‑you know, I have been questioned when I was younger. I didn't work hard enough and, you know, that I wasn't mentally strong enough and I didn't listen to my coaches and stuff. You know, I always did listen to my coaches. I just was very immature sometimes on the court. I have tried to improve that side of things. Yeah, I think I just proving to myself is probably the most pleasing part about tonight, because there are times when I didn't know if I was going to be able to do it.

Q. There were a lot of extraordinary points, sort of another aspect of this era, all the great defense. How does the body feel after four‑and‑a‑half hours of that?

ANDY MURRAY: It definitely feels a lot better when you win. (Laughter.) You know, on this surface especially things hurt a lot in the morning. I actually normally when I play on hard courts take painkillers most days before matches. Actually today was the only day I took any painkillers during the tournament. I felt really good for the most part in terms of, you know, my joints and stuff. But it does take a lot out of the body, and this is for sure the most demanding surface. You know, you can wake up with stiff back, hips, knees. I can't do it, but the way Novak slides on the court I'm sure his ankles and stuff are pretty sore in the morning. But, yeah, I actually feel fine just now. I think maybe because it wasn't that warm out there. I feel fine just now. I felt fine at the end of the match. Hopefully I would have been able to go a little bit longer.

Hi guys, I am going to concentrate on the BBC, Sky Sports, ESPN (USA), ATP, US Open site. Next I will go over the Tennis Space and Eurosport/Yahoo. Then I will move on to ESPN (UK) and the main UK tabloids such as the Telegraph, Independent, Guardian, Herald, Mail, Scotsman, Daily Record, Evening Standard. And I will also post a few things I come across on twitter as I come across them.

If anyone can post other stuff it would be great. For example, thinks like the CBS interviews that Bardot posted. There is just far too much stuff for me to search out on Google, and I guess there may be quite a few good interviews going on in the USA.

If you come across individual tweets and messages of congratulations please post them on the congratulations thread here - http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1391-CONGRATULATIONS-to-our-GRAND-SLAM-CHAMP!!!&p=101315#post101315

Tennis Space (http://www.thetennisspace.com/2012/09/mad-lendl-annabel-croft-an-iron-and-an-ironing-board/) - Ivan Lendl, Annabel Croft, an iron and an ironing-board

Croft, who will be commentating for British Eurosport on this weekend’s Davis Cup ties, on Lendl’s sense of humour: “Lendl’s quirky, really mad. His sense of humour is totally eccentric. He tells filthy jokes, too. He made me laugh in New York. Our studio in New York was just above the practice court they tended to use. After one of Andy’s practice sessions, Lendl tried to get an ironing board and the iron into the live shot, as we sat in the studio talking. He took the ironing board and the iron from our green room and carried them out on to the court, and had written my name on the iron. He wanted people to think that my role in the commentary team at the US Open was to iron everyone’s shirts. When he later came back inside with the iron, he wanted to make sure I had seen that he had written my name on the iron. I didn’t mind. He made me laugh.”

This was posted on BBC Scotland's live report on the Glasgow parade.

Olympic tennis champion Andy Murray, who did not make it to the parade in Glasgow, is set to return to his hometown on Sunday. The newly-crowned US Open champion is expected to arrive in Dunblane in an open-topped bus at 12 noon, and then walk through town towards Dunblane Tennis Club.

Its strange he is not going to go on the Edinburgh Olympic parade on Sunday. I'd have thought they would have arranged them on separate days.

The Edinburgh parade is very much about Sir Chris Hoy with him being presented with the Freedom of the City at the end. Andy might be seen as hijacking it if he attended plus he would receive "pelters" if having missed Glasgow he did the Edinburgh one. ;) Maybe he thinks it's fitting that Dunblane gets all the attention for his return to Scotland.

I actually think Andy was right to stay away because Monday's achievement was so huge and today was all about Olympics achievements and yes he had the gold and silver but everyone will want to celebrate the slam as well and that's not what today is about.

And if he really is in Dunblane on Sunday I'll be even more gutted than normal .... cos I'll be in Perth which is in easy reach of Dunblane but we've got a family meal planned for Sunday lunchtime :crying:

It's still regarded as a bit of an upper-class sport. This is just for fun folks - not to be taken seriously! A piece I found from an astrologist predicting tennis and the 'big 4' in 2013.

'Ok this is how I see 2013. Andy is going to have a stellar year, and astrologically I can see him winning the Australian and the holy grail, Wimbledon in 2013. Novak is still coming off his high year in 2011 and I see him as the main challenger to Andy in 2013. Rafa has got issues. I have a feeling that his knee problems and health issues are going to plague him through 2013 too. He has Saturn in his 12th house connecting with a Pluto Moon opposition across his 6th/12th house axis, the medical axis of the chart. Saturn rules the joints and the knees and the hits to Pluto will degrade them being the chart ruler (he has a Scorpio Ascendant). Saturn does come into the bright lights of his first house at the end of 2013, but this will be a new 28 year cycle for Rafa and I could honestly see him thinking seriously about his career. If he does try to play through all this, I cannot see him being at his best because his style is so physical. Roger's win at Wimbledon I saw as his last hurrah. He has had a fabulous career, but time waits for no man and even if he wins the odd title here and there (and this is possible), he is getting towards the end of his tennis life... '

Would be nice to think he's right about Andy, wouldn't it? He was pretty spot on with his predictions for this year - not that I'm a believer of course!!!!!!

This letter from Jon Wertheim's mailbag (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20120919/wertheim-mailbag/index.html)today got me absolutely   and did I say

Murray dropped off his résumé on my desk. He had an asterisk on two of his titles: Next to Olympic gold 2012, it stated Rafael Nadal skipped the Games and that Roger Federer was exhausted due to a four-and-a-half-hour semifinal the day before. Next to his U.S. Open 2012 victory, it stated that once again Nadal did not participate and that Djokovic had the disadvantage of a day's rest before the final as opposed to two days off for Murray. Is Murray being too harsh on himself or will Nadal's return expose him as a one-Slam winner?
-- Tina Wilson, Los Angeles

• Funny, the résumé he dropped with me made no such mention. And I when I looked it up on Google -- the inevitable next step after receiving a résumé -- I saw that he beat the seven players placed before him. Which is all we ask.

I don't disagree that players have had tougher draws. But A) I don't go for this asterisk business much. B) In his fifth Grand Slam final -- a month removed from defeating Federer on Centre Court -- Murray toppled the defending champ in five sets. That ought to douse any discussion that this was somehow less than legit.
