The source of Murray’s confidence rests in a solid off-season. Kokkinakis is ranked down at 159, but he has beaten six top-20 players in his career, including Roger Federer in Miami and Andrey Rublev last week in his home city.

His only previous meeting with Murray came in Davis Cup in 2015, when the Australian won just six games in three sets.

“He definitely handed it to me that day, but I’m ready now, I feel good,” said Kokkinakis.

“It’s going to be a tough match, obviously. I watched a fair bit of his match against Berrettini and he played great. He is looking in good shape. I practised with him a fair bit recently.

“I’m just going to continue to play my game. He may have lost a little bit, but his anticipation is just as good as ever, and he can still play at the top with the best of them. I’m going to be ready for the best version of Murray.”

The moment Murray exited the court after nearly six hours of gruelling competition, he had no time for pleasantries. He had media duties to fulfil, and while other players may have made their excuses, Murray got it done as soon as he could so he – and everyone else – could leave Melbourne Park at last.

After exiting the player tunnel, he promptly ushered the 20 or so remaining journalists into the bowels of the Margaret Court Arena. He sat on a plastic chair while they all huddled close and some lunged to hover their dictaphones within earshot.

"I thought his press situation last night was so funny," Laura Robson, the former British player turned-Eurosport broadcaster, said. "Usually you'd go to the broadcast centre and it's a bit more of a serious thing in the press conference room. He was basically doing a walk-and-talk on the way out from where player services is, hustling the media to try and get them moving – maybe 10 to 15 mins max and then he was out of there."

After a stunted "night's" sleep, and just over five hours on from his match ending, Murray was remarkably back at Melbourne Park. Why on earth did he sacrifice precious time in bed, you ask? An appointment with the on-site podiatrist, to take a look at his feet. The glamorous life of a professional tennis player never stops.

Murray returns from a mid-day rest – and almost certainly an afternoon nap – to the Margaret Court Arena, fewer than eight hours on to have a 20-minute hit, with bleary-eyed coach Ivan Lendl on hand to advise. Understandably, he looked extremely stiff and sore. He grabbed some food while at Melbourne Park too.

His brother Jamie - who won his mixed doubles match on Friday alongside American Taylor Townsend, but lost in the men's with New Zealander Michael Venus - said getting on court at all was a good sign.

"I just saw him there, he was just having food – I was surprised to see him," Jamie said. "He probably just wanted to move around and stuff. It's probably a good thing to keep his body moving. I mean, if he was really feeling absolutely atrocious, he wouldn't have done it, would he?"


Murray stayed on-site for further recovery, including a massage, and then headed back to his hotel for an early night. "It's positive signs he's been out on Margaret Court Arena having a hit, done a couple of hours recovery in between and now can probably go to bed at the grand ol' time of 6.30pm," Robson said. "He's very deserving of a 12-hour sleep."

Murray will next play in Rotterdam, the indoor ATP 500 event that begins in three weeks on Monday, and then his schedule is full. He will also compete in Dubai in February, then at the Sunshine Double, Indian Wells and Miami.

At the end of the Australian Open, Murray will be ranked around 62nd. After continually losing in the second round of tournaments throughout last spring, Murray has only 160 points to defend before the clay court season. Should he hope to move towards the top 32 in order to secure seeding in the second half of the season, he must start making positive strides.

Whether he chooses to compete on clay will be another decision to make. After not contesting the clay court season in 2021, Murray had planned not to compete on clay last year before he changed his mind.

“The sad part is that obviously the finish time of the previous match affected his performance in the third round and the door was open for him to make a run,” McEnroe told Eurosport.

“It seems like he’s fit enough and the body is holding up well enough that, with a little bit of luck, he could have gone a lot further.

“Bautista Agut is a seasoned pro, he’s a very good player. But obviously if the two of them play at their top level, Murray’s going to win.”

McEnroe admits that the flip side of the coin is that Murray would also be in better shape if he had put Kokkinakis away quickly.

“It’s got to be extremely hard mentally for him to put in that much effort and sort of get thrown off because he played at four in the morning.

“Having said that, if he had beat Kokkinakis in straight sets, we wouldn’t be discussing this and I believe the outcome of his match with Bautista Agut would have been different.

“That’s the way tennis works. It’s harsh when you’re out there on your own. So he’s got to figure out a way to get himself in matches where he can finish guys off quicker.

“Both matches took its toll and that’s a big ask for anyone at any age to be able to rebound consistently and go all the way or deep into a tournament.

“I think he certainly has the respect of everyone that’s around the sport, the players. But he’s got to figure out a way to tighten things up.”

John McEnroe believes that what Murray really wants in the remaining days of his career is not consistency on tour but rather one last deep run at a Grand Slam.

Andy Murray is targeting a return to French Open this year as he continues his quest to move up into the top 32 of the ATP rankings.

Moving higher up the rankings would secure the Scot a seeded place in the Grand Slams, and those hopes were following a victory over Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Qatar Open.

“My plan just now is to play in Rome, Madrid and hopefully the French Open, providing my body is good," Murray said in Doha

“I’ll do a training block after Miami on the clay, I’m going to do that in Europe somewhere for three or four weeks. I’ll train, try and get my body used to the clay courts and monitor how my body is feeling.”

The former world No. 1 has only made two appearances in the last six years at Roland Garros, and will be eager to right the wrongs of a straight sets first-round defeat to Stan Wawrinka three years ago.

“Physically, I was not good the year I played against Wawrinka,” he said. “I’d like to get the opportunity to play it one more time before I stop playing. While I feel physically really good, I would like to play there again.”
