I guess his latest comment about the schedule is another dig at Murray :)
Don't let me rant about the scheduling business and his claim "everything is all right"
I'll just say when he speaks about schedule he shows all his egocentrical self  That's as long as he doesn't respect his mandatory commitment, like he has done in the past years.
All I can think is that Federer thinks we are all as stupid as he is. If he had full blown mono he couldn't have played. It's like people saying they have flu when all they've got is a bad cold or virus, because if they had flu they wouldn't be able to get out of bed. He had a good rest, was in Europe the whole time so had little travel and time zones to go through because he was exempted from playing, whereas Andy went to Thailand, Japan and China, then back to England, then Europe. He is so full of himself that he really believes everyone can't see through him.I can't bear to even look at him any more, and I used to love watching him play, but now he makes me sick.:ill:
Ancic and Soderling must be so mad at Federer at the moment, supposedly implying that they are weaker than him! Having a very mild form of mono is a WHOLE lot different from a full blown out one. But people may end up taking Fed's comments at face value and believe Federer grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I just read a 10 balls article about Andy and Novak being the whiners at O2. Ignoring more important comments made by others! Poor IMO
Be warned this will make you mad! 10 balls (http://www.10sballs.com/2011/11/25/biggest-whiners-on-tour/) but hopefully someone will be able to say something proper in the comments. Too annoyed to lol

Treat that article with the contempt it deserves. Did it not occur to the writer that Andy, if he didn't comment on Daveed's performance, was feeling bad because he more than likely knew that the injury would force him out of the WTFs and that his fans would be disappointed at not seeing him compete in the O2 arena.
This article has got me going as well especially the final sentence. :grrr:

I'm tired of reading about St Roger and how virtuous he is in both carefully planning his schedule so that he is able to dominate the sport at the end of what has been for the other top players a demanding and exhausting year and playing through mono and a bad back.
I'm sure that Ancic, Soderling and players like Marcos, Fena, and Delboy will be annoyed with him. St Roger is a great player but he is really demeaning himself with these off court jibes. He should be counting his lucky stars that he only had a minor form of mono and has never incurred illnesses and serious injuries that kept him out of the game for months. In the case of Ancic mono led to a series of injuries and illness which brought what was a very promising career to a premature end and Soderling was on the brink of a great tennis career when he was stricken down with the illness that has lost him his ranking at the top of the game and kept him from playing for months.
Everyone seems to have forgotten St Roger's tears at Melbourne when he lost that final to Rafa - tears that prevented Rafa from enjoying his moments of victory. Sportsmanship and gracious in defeat :grrr:

1. Sadly many "fans" just know nothing about the sport, bar Federer's (and Nadal's name). Just think about the average talks you can over-hear at any tennis tournaments.
2. Sadly many journos confuse the greatness of his tennis talent with a greatness on a more personal and human level. He's so perfect with his tennis they can't grasp it doesn't automatically mean he's a perfect human being.
3. About the players... who knows? Who votes? Those who have to deal with his nastiness or all and those who just admire his tennis talent and have never crossed his path? (It's a honest question, I don't know how the awards work, and it's the reason I don't give a care about them. Call it my statistical side, if I don't know how the survey has been planned I can't trust nor comment any result)
An interesting comment I thought from Petchey today - he pointed out that actually Fed's results in the last two years have not really been much worse than in previous years - he just hasn't won the same number of tournaments. He thought it wasn't so much that Fed had declined but the other top 10 players had caught him up and in some cases passed him. I think I also read somewhere that the year Hewitt finished as world number 1 he had fewer points than any of the top 4 this year. I don't know if that's true but, if it is, it just shows how dominant the 'Big 4' are at the moment.

But Fed didn't win any grand slams this year. Previous years he's always won at least one if not more.
Most of these commentators seem to have SELECTIVE MEMORY when it comes to drooling over the GOAT
To be fair to Petch in this case he wasn't drooling - he was actually making the point that he thought Fed had probably played as well as he always had but that others had played better and so beaten him in the latter stages of tournaments that he would have won in the past. The inference I take from that is that Fed is actually playing as well as he always has but finds it much harder to win now and can only actually post a win when the others either aren't there or are well below par. Sorry if I've confused everyone by not explaining myself very well - another sign of age I'm afraid!
Sorry Alis. You did explain yourself perfectly. I was just talking about the media and commentators generally not Petch who does actually behave fairly towards Andy on most occasions.

Good for Petch, I think the fact that Fed couldn't win a slam speaks volumes this year. - What gets me the most is how Fed always seems to get the favorable order of play. I looked at the WTF since it came to London as I would have thought that Group A would have played first on the first day. In 2009 that was the case. In 2010 & 11 it was Group B that started. In all 3 years Fed was in the group that started. In 2009 & 2010 Andy was in the group that started. So, seems stacked in Feds favor as usual. Of course, i know, this is the LUCK of the draw isn't it. It is completely RANDOM how these draws are made. Of course, he still has to get through to the finals and he only managed to do that once this year. Roll on 2012 and Andy let's make it your year. I BELIEVE you are more than ready and I BELIEVE you can do it, with or without luck. Just ignore the ranting of a certain former #1, as he likes to be known, who will play head games which in his own way prove that he fears you and I think only you. You are in his head, ha!! ha!! ha!! Please stay there.
I think Petch is wrong there. We see Fed often shanking shots nowadays which he never would have done. Although he may play with his former brilliance for a few games, he can't sustain it for a whole match. His level is definitely not what it was.

I freely admit it, I used to be a Federer fan, and I still like the way he plays when he is playing really well, such as against Rafa this week. But to say he is still playing at his old level is plainly ridiculous. The reason he is shanking so many shots is because he is slower than he was (naturally, only to be expected) which means he is not really in the right place to play the shot. He still comes up with brilliance, but so often now he comes up with some real rubbish - but commentators, reporters and fans just see the brilliant bits and conveniently forget all about the rest. On a good day he can still sweep everybody else off the court, but the good days are coming so very rarely now.
I used to find excuses for his arrogance and smugness, but for quite a long time now I have been unable to find those excuses. His sideswipes at the moment seem to be concentrated on Andy, but I can remember when Rafa and Novak were the victims of his barbed tongue. You won't find him making that type of remarks about his "bunnies". Strange as it may sound, I think the man feels insecure.

this is from an arrticle by Kevin Mitchell in the guardian - "The Swiss, a master of insouciance as well as the court, sees less cause to complain about the schedule than Nadal, Murray and others, who contemplated strike action after the US Open. Talk of insurrection appalled the essentially conservative and self-sufficient Federer. He says it is about sensible schedule management. And he is right, although he is not looking at the wider picture. Federer has the luxury, as a senior player, to pick and choose his fights more selectively.
He timed his charge here perfectly, ignoring Asia and returning after a decent rest to pick over the bones of his weary foes in Basel and Paris. He was short of his best yet irresistible, not so much a seasonal new-born king but a reborn one, an old-fashioned survivor in an inflexible modern playground of sport."

Something about Andy:
Department of Bad Luck
Andy Murray looks great all fall, the British press are gleeful—and then a freaky injury and quiet end to the year. Poor Murray. Things never seem to break his way at the sport’s most important events. The popular question is, will he win a major in 2012? I wonder if he can afford to not win a major in 2012. Another year without and Murray will have to think that it just might not be his lot in life to win a Slam. For those who say he has enough talent to win one, I agree. But it might be the case that he doesn’t have enough to win multiple Slams, not with a forehand and serve that are less formidable than those of the men in front of him in the world rankings. Those are the two biggest shots in tennis. It’s tough to win a major when you can’t rely on them.

What an interesting idea! si.com roundup of 2011. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/tennis/12/09/atp-roundtable/1.html)
The AO website have launched a new feature this year called the AOTV Vault (http://vault.australianopentv.com/game/797SR023_s02/Rafael_Nadal/Fernando_Verdasco/NaN). It's a brilliant resource with selected full-length matches available to watch for free. Here's (http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2011-12-13/201112121323707450307.html) more info about it. Andy's featured matches are against Djokovic (2011), Ferrer (2011), Federer (2010) and Cilic (2010).
Thanks Katie - that's certainly well worth knowing! They have the fantastic 2009 match between Rafa & Verdasco too. The only problem is, can I find the time to rewatch any of these matches?
Congratulations to Bob and Mike Bryan who have just begun their 271st week on top of the ATP rankings beating McEnroe's record by 1.

I definitely don't agree with the Tokyo final being one of the worst to watch - that was great! Rafa was really strong in the first set but watching Andy being able to turn the match around was interesting to watch. If they wanted to put really bad Andy matches in there though, I'd have selected his IW/Miami Donald Young and Alexander Bogomolov matches!

I guess Bodo didn't watch Tokyo final. The quality of the first two sets was amazing and even in the third set (in which Andy's quality was super) Nadal's dropped his level only in the second half, when his belief shattered.
But looking at the other Bodo's choices I think he just doesn't know what "worst" means. A loopsided match doesn't always mean its quality is awful. Nadal vs Verdasco in Cincinnati (76 67 76) was without doubt the worst match I watched this year as quality goes, ie.

That's a bold prediction - I wonder who he has in mind to drop out? And who he thinks is consistent enough to be in the top 4 instead? Del Potro could enter the top four again at some point but I think he'd struggle to stay there unless he wins a slam again.

"ANDY MURRAY. Of course. Britain’s 62 million souls have been waiting for their mumblecore hero to step up for quite a while now. So far, he’s had bad luck: One or more of the three guys who simply are better than him have played their best tennis in every major tournament of his career. Murray can still improve -- we all can still improve -- but that shouldn’t be a source of anxiety for him. He knows by now that Nadal, Djokovic and Federer always will be more gifted than he is. He has to concentrate on what he can control, which means getting comfortable with his top level so he can stay at that level for longer periods during best-of-five matches. Then good things can happen.
......
Murray’s ready, too. He has learned to mix up his impromptu drop shots and lullaby groundstrokes with aggressive, first-strike tennis. He has what it takes. With a little bit of luck -- like he had at the 2011 Australian Open when Rafa retired on him mid-match -- he can find himself in another major final, and then it’ll simply be about him putting his head down and wailing away. The guy across the net -- Djokovic? Federer? -- just might have a slightly off day. It can happen. Remember the 2009 U.S. Open final?
Percentage chance of winning a major in 2012: 50"

You should definitely not put your money on Rafa for AO. He currently has a shoulder injury which is preventing him from practising his serve. He's also just had yet another virus. And he was only able to play his DC finals matches with cortisone injections in both knees. Hopefully he will regain his fitness before long.

I don't understand why tennis writers say that Andy doesn't have a weapon - his backhand is one of the best on the tour! His first serve too, and I'd also say that his variety is a weapon - he may not be a power player with a huge forehand but he's able to change tactics mid-match and surprise opponents which is definitely an asset.

Oh dear whatever tennis writer was that? Needs to lose the adjective.
Andy's weapons are his tactical awareness, his first serve and his terrific two handed backhand.
His two main weapons are fear and surprise! And his backhand! Three! Three main weapons! etc etc.

"Murray, 24, has never officially played Tomic but a series of hit-outs with him – and the teen’s stellar run – has ensured the Scot will be wary on Saturday.

“You have to be very focussed against him.
“He can play a couple of games when he doesn’t do much then play three or four great games.”
Told of Murray’s comments, a beaming Tomic said: “It is a good feeling for him to say that.

"I played very well today in hot conditions," Murray said.
"I felt like I moved very well right from the start which wasn't the case in my first two matches. That's a huge part of my game and when that goes well the rest of my game improves a lot.
"I can dictate more of my points and make it harder for my opponents to get the ball through me and that's what I did from the start."
Murray said his slow start this week was simply a case of needing time to get used to the courts in Brisbane.
"It took me a while to get used to the conditions," he said. "Playing in practice is completely different to the matches and sometimes your legs are a little bit heavy and sometimes there are nerves.
"I hadn't played for six or seven weeks and it takes time to get used to it again."

"Tim Henman:
“It’s a tough one for me, as Murray and Federer are my two favourites. I suppose, from a British point of view, Murray to win a slam, and preferably the Australian Open. If he won in Australia, that would set him up for the year. I don’t think that’s easy, the fact he’s been in three slam finals already, and lost them. To get that monkey off the back early in the year, that would be great for him.”"
.....
"Mark Petchey:
“I would like to see Andy Murray win in Australia, because then the pressure would be off. The way the calendar works off, there aren’t many warm-up tournaments. He obviously trains like crazy going into it. That’s an easier tournament for him to go into. He had a great clay-court season last year, but the French Open is always going to be a tough one for him to win. Suddenly, he’s under immense pressure at Wimbledon, and then there’s only one left, the US Open. So for him to win the Australian Open would be great.”"

"In the early hours of Sunday morning, UK time, Murray will play Alexandr Dolgopolov, the reed-slim 23 year old from Ukraine who - the final against Novak Djokovic apart - gave the Scot his hardest match in last year’s Australian Open before losing in four sets in the quarter-finals. Murray knows exactly how tough it is going to be to win on his first full appearance in Queensland. "
Neil Harman is in OZ for the duration and he's been writing some cracking pieces this week from Brisbane.
Unfortunately, you need to pay to read it online ... it's about £2/week but that includes The Times and The Sunday Times and is a lot cheaper than going out to buy the paper for Harman's write-ups. I wouldn't normally buy the paper anyway but decided to register for the on-line version because I really enjoy reading the pieces and I'll probably get my money's worth especially over Wimbledon and other big events.

Yes, so do I. However, the printed newspaper costs £1 to buy on weekdays and £2.20 for the Sunday Times making £8.20 pw.So £2/week is a reasonable deal for the online versions.

"LP: You started and finished the year at No.4, despite reaching four grand slam semis and one final and winning five titles, including an Asian hat-trick late in the season. Do you sometimes feel like you're going up and down on the spot?
AM: Last year, I think was my fault … I should never have finished [number] four last year. The last month or so went as badly as it could have done really, so this year the goal will be to move up the rankings and, yeah, win the slams. Whoever wins the most matches, they're going to be there at the end of the year and I didn't do that at the end. I got injured. I missed Basel and had to miss the [ATP World Tour Finals at the] O2, so if I hadn't missed that I'm sure I would have finished a bit higher."

Neil Harman is doing sterling work out in Australia with a string of reports about Andy.
You can find them in the Times Online (yes, £'s to pay, mutter mutter) and I reckon the £2 per week is worth it. We'd be breaking copyright law to reproduce them in full so here are some extracts from today's pieces with links to the full articles.
Ivan Lendl lets Andy Murray do the talking
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3280406.ece"Ivan Lendl will make himself available for one round-table discussion later this week to talk about what lured him back to tennis full time. Then, as best he can, he will retreat from the debate and let Andy Murray do all the talking.
The former world No 1 does not want the fascination surrounding his return as Murray’s coach to overshadow the job he wants to do with the British No 1, the subtleties of which will hopefully become apparent in the next few months."
He had to have his arm twisted to say anything. “I thought Andy was great today,” the coach said. “He fought for every point, it could not have been much better, and I thought that his composure was fantastic.”
The final comment was the nugget.
Andy Murray embarks on a life less ordinary
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3280424.ece
Ask Andy Murray what he considers the best thing about being Andy Murray and initially he gives an off-the-cuff response. Then, two hours later, he sends a message saying that the best thing about being Andy Murray is “being normal”.
Now there are those who may regard this as a remarkable statement, because he is quite the opposite. For a start, Murray is a British tennis player of world-class standards, above and beyond anyone the country has produced for seven decades, which makes him distinctly abnormal.
We assume, therefore, he is simply telling everyone that he is really nothing special but a young man with dreams who is doing everything he can to fulfil them — and in that, he finds normality. The Australian Open, starting in Melbourne a week today, is his 25th grand-slam event and he is settling into the consequences of a decision that is regarded as anything but “normal” — employing as his coach someone who has never coached before and was regarded with some contempt in his playing career .
“Someone like Lendl is not going to let me get away with 90 per cent. I’ll give everything I can and he will make sure I’m prepared as well as possible and have the right mindset for the big events.
“I’m really looking forward to it and I hope he is as well.”

This was pretty much quoted word for word in The Australian. It seems Lendl has spoken to Murray about his on-court behaviour.

Referring to Andy's on-court demeanour, Lendl is said to have replied "All that will be said to Andy on that subject will be said by me to him and to nobody else." Hope their relationship is allowed some 'space' without the media picking over every detail.

"How do you rate Andy Murray’s prospects at this Grand Slam – will it represent one of his best chances to win?
Andy Murray has absolutely everything: the complete package. It all just depends on what the other players produce because he is playing in an era with three all-time legends. I am really confident for Andy that he will win a Grand Slam soon and if it’s not this one then it will come. I am very, very sure of it. He has everything required to do so, and I believe in his ability."

Q. Perhaps a little bit like Brisbane, a nervousy start, but once you got going, you were fine and comfortable?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. I mean, it was obviously a different tournament to Brisbane. I mean, some weeks you feel very comfortable in the conditions straightaway; sometimes it takes a few matches.
It's very different conditions what we've been practicing in. The court plays different. I mean, it was incredibly hot today. Balls bouncing up very high, whereas it's been cool, and this court particularly reacts a lot with the temperature. It took me a little while to adjust to that.
Also, I've never played or hit against him before, so it always takes a bit of time to get used to the guy you're playing. But once I did, I started to play better.
Q. What did you think of his game?
ANDY MURRAY: I thought he was good. He serves well. He's quick. He does everything pretty solid. There wasn't one thing in particular that was incredible, but there wasn't too many holes in his game, which, you know, if you want to be a good player, you can't have any.
Q. In conditions like this, is this when the pain of Florida pays off?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it helps. But, again, today, you know, obviously training in hot temperatures helps because you're used to it, but also for the last couple of weeks it's been very different.
You know, today was a bit of a shock to the system. It was good to get used to playing in that heat again because might have to a bit further down the line.
Q. Have you had any sort of debrief from Ivan yet about what he thought about the victory, aspects of it?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, he was very happy.
Q. You stepped up close to the baseline the second, third, and fourth sets.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I played better, but he understands how you might be feeling at the start of a Grand Slam, what it's like to play against someone that you haven't played against, what it's like playing in different conditions, how you feel in really warm conditions.
It's just good to have someone there that, you know, understands all of those things. Someone maybe without the experience might walk in and be like, What the hell were you doing in the first set? What were you playing the first six or seven games?
You know, he understands the feelings that you go through. Once I started moving better, I played better. Last few sets were good.
Q. The hamstring?
ANDY MURRAY: It's fine.
Q. Does it feel a little bit different out there on Hisense? Do you feel as though you're almost slightly removed from everything else?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's a nice court to play on because there's not much wind. I mean, on the outside courts it's been so windy, and on Laver it's normally, from the far side, when you walk onto the court, a pretty stiff breeze you're playing into.
But on Hisense, yeah, you don't really get that. It's a pretty calm court. Yeah, I mean, any of the courts would have felt different today purely because of the conditions.
Q. At one point you didn't seem very happy with your shoes. Was it too much grip, not enough grip?
ANDY MURRAY: It's just different. The court is incredibly sticky when it's that warm. My foot got caught on the court a couple of times. But I've had that a few times on that court especially when it's been really warm.
Q. So they're not new ones or different ones you're using?
ANDY MURRAY: No, no.
Q. Usually at Wimbledon we're asking you about what it's like to be the last Brit. Second day everyone's gone, so is that more so a disappointment?
ANDY MURRAY: I'm not the person to be disappointed about that. There are other people in charge that should be disappointed about it; not me. I mean, I'd rather there was more Brits winning, obviously, but it's not for me to be disappointed.
